Plus the admittedly pretty cool fact that you're canonically playing a remade version of a previous version. Like the offscreen animus user protagonist is canonically playing a remade version of the Edward Kenway product & it slots into the modern (actually time skipped future to 2096 for some reason) story perfectly. It's so good.

Actually the " modern"story is pretty interesting, but there's only four versions focused on it & it's mostly background codex entries. But I do love the idea of a Templar AI essentially lobotomising it's users into compliance & an assassin AI recruiting users to the assaesins to fight back

Ngl the news about the game devs being laid off pretty much upon launch soured the whole thing for me. I was very excited bc Black Flag was my favorite AC game in terms of gameplay and that is saying A LOT bc I normally don't care a lot about gameplay, I put a lot more importance in the worldbuilding and story and Black Flag had so MUCH good beautiful worldbuilding and story and it was a GORGEOUS game and I was looking forward to paying it so much. But I can't give Ubisoft my money after this
