I miss when all anime wasn't supposed to be a high grossing box office success and you could get obscure ovas and series animated lovingly by a small team with a small budget. Now you either get loli isekai slop or hugely marketed absolute masterpieces with ridiculous budgets that only run for 12 episodes at the time and EVERYONE absolutely NEEDS to love. Not complaining about having incredible anime like The Ghost in the Shell and Jaadugar and Witch Hat Atelier but like. Tekkaman Blade could never be made in 2026 bc anime is not allowed to be unsuccessful. And yet Tekkaman Blade has one of the most beautiful stories I have ever seen in an anime and marked me for life. Even the Rayearth ovas are kind of obscure and a bit rough around the edges but instead of remaking them, they decided to go for the more polished original story. In fact they didn't even come up with A New Thing, they just remade The Thing That Already Existed bc nobody's allowed to take risks with anime anymore and I find that very sad

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this
