And then there’s the REAL intimacy of having to put the lights back on to change the bedsheets and flirtatious bickering about whether to have a shower or a bath together but WE HAVE TO AGREE ON ONE QUICKLY BECAUSE NOW THAT WE ARE NOT IN THE MIDST OF PASSIONATELY INTERTWINING SOULS WE’RE ALL STICKY BAD BAD TEXTURE

You can really hear the characters voices coming off the page and it takes its time in developing Lister and Rimmer’s feelings, from initial mild lust and curiosity to deepening love and attachment. Yes it’s got sex scenes right from the first chapter but they really serve a purpose in what is a well written developing love story between them, staying true to their characters and also managing to be very ‘Red Dwarf’ in terms of the humour and character interaction. The sex scenes manage to be not only HOT but also funny, tender, imperfect, imaginative - because Rimmer’s a soft light hologram for most of the story - and also a bit sad in terms of reminding them that they can’t touch each other, in fact they can’t even kiss - it took a second reading for me to realise that once Rimmer is a hologram, they never kiss until Legion appears.

I also like the way most of the story is original but it still follows the general timeline of the tv series.
