I imagine you get a lot of requests for the Menace AU, but if it's not too much trouble, would you mind writing about Danny meeting his new younger siblings and their reactions? I think it would be really fun and sweet, although they'd probably all be a little worried at first.
Dick was angry. It was an odd feeling to spend every second of every day since that night being so angry that he actually twitched with it.
While the American government tried to figure out what to do with him, while the circus that had been his entire life moved on- leaving him behind- Dick sat in a stupid little cell while the man who killed his parents was out there, living life like usual.
There was no room in the foster system, they said. The only place that could take Dick in was Juvi. They threw him in here, like a common criminal, while his parents' murderers walked away, covering the end of Dick's world as a mere accident.
It wasn't fair. How dare he? How dare they tell him to sit? To wait. That man needed to die. He needed to have his neck snapped under Dick's hands.
"Well, aren't you a tiny thing?" A gruff voice huffs, dragging Dick's attention away from his blood smear thoughts. Standing behind the bars of his cell, twirling a set of keys, a teenager dressed in all black, looking like death had attempted to take him but was driven away. Dick nearly believed it was an evil spirit that the Strong Man used to warn him about.
Usually, he would have been frightened and would have hidden in his mother's skirts until the spirit moved on, but that vile, dark, hot anger only made him scowl. The teenager's lips twitch upwards a little, but when he opens his mouth, he speaks too fast for Dick to understand.
His scowl turns darker. He had been learning English and was getting so good at it, but he couldn't keep up in a conversation at that pace. The teenager seemed to understand, for he merely stared at Dick for a few more minutes, eyes cold and intense enough that the hairs on Dick's arms stood on end.
The teenager spoke again before twisting on his heel and blending into the shadows of the hallway. The second he was gone, sound rammed back into Dick's cell. He jumped, surprised that he hadn't noticed the world had gone quiet until the honking and zooming cars sounds returned, there were small mutters from his nearby cellmates, and even the dripping from the tiny sink in the corner resumed.
Dick shivered, a bit of fear overpowering his anger slightly. He hopes he doesn't have to deal with the teenager for a short while.
A few minutes later, the guards came to get him, because Mr. Wyane had somehow gotten hold of his file and would be his new foster home. Apparently, it was an expedited effort that his adopted son pushed for. Apparently, he made a commotion about putting children in juvie for convenience, and it sparked enough public outrage that Dick's case, along with six others, was reviewed that same day.
Tim was three years old when he first met Danny Fenton-Wayne. It had been a few weeks after Mr. Wayne had let his son out in a public event at his office. Rumors of Danny being his illegitimate son were still circulating, but Tim wasn't old enough to understand what that meant.
He only knew it was bad and that his parents had shaken their heads over something Mr. Wyane had done. Tim was the youngest person there that night. His parents had wanted to get him a babysitter for the night, but his usual nanny had been sent home early after his mother realized the poor thing was running a high fever and in no condition to care for a child as small as Tim.
He was instructed to stay in a corner of the room and draw. Tim was having a good time doing that, but eventually he got a bit sleepy, and without a second's hesitation, he wandered out of his corner into the ballgowns and pantsuits, looking for his parents.
At once, it became apparent that this was a party for grown-ups because no one looked down. Tim was stepped on, shoved, pushed, and even sneered at by drunks enough times that he burst into tears. The adults, once realizing it was a little child, had all given each other wide-eyed looks and a few attempts to coo at him to calm him down, but Tim wasn't having any of it.
He wanted his parents, and he was crying loudly, messy, hot tears until they arrived. Now the rich had children, but most of them didn't even touch their own, let alone someone else's. None of them knew what to do to get the tiny thing to stop crying.
No one but Danny Fenton-Wayne, who appeared from a dark hallway like a ghost and glided his way to Tim. That's when his memory of the event sharpens, and Tim swears he will remember it in perfect detail till the day he dies.
Danny had crouched down to his height, then had let out a low, even howl that instantly calmed Tim down. It was like Danny had been a werewolf trying to have his pup settle, and although the faces of every adult had gone pale, Tim had never felt as safe as he did wrapped in Danny's frequency. A few minutes went by, and Tim and Danny were in utter silence after Danny stopped making the sound, locked gazes, not moving a inch, not even blinking, before Tim felt his eyelids grow heavy
He had tilted forward into Danny's strong arms, and the teenager had stood with him utterly boneless in his hold. His head resting on Danny's shoulder, Tim had drifted off as the crowd parted like the Red Sea for Danny.
He had gone searching for his parents to return the now slumbering child. His parents had been worried that Tim had been placed under some kind of sleeping curse once the story of how Danny put him to bed circulated through the grapevine.
Jason had been running for his life, a group of street kids—older and bigger—hot on his heels. He had only been on the streets a few days when he accidentally walked into their hideout.
He had witnessed a violent beating of some school kid, and like an idiot, he had gasped out loud when one of them had hit the crying male teenager with a metal pipe until his cries cut off and an ill-filling pool of red appeared underneath him.
The one with the pipe had been the one who spotted him, eyes wild and crazed, and Jason hadn't even bothered to gather his things. He just turned and threw himself through the small hole he had crawled through.
Then it has been a chase through alleyways. He had the advantage of a head start, but that was quickly losing its edge as the older kids were much faster than he was. Not to mention that Jason had been weakened by a lack of food, proper rest, and the recent grief of his mother's passing.
A few of those chasing him shouted out threats and taunts that had Jason's already fast beating heart kick up to a painful rhythm, and when he attempted to take a turn, his foot slammed him against a brick wall, which made his heart twist painfully.
He scrambled to get to his feet, but that small mistake had been just what they were waiting for. Jason's world exploded in pain when a metal pipe slammed on his head, knocking him back to the ground as a scream ripped out of his throat. The group surrounded him, cutting off every exit, leaving Jason to crawl towards the brick wall, pressing himself against it as he stared upwards at the jeering street kids in horror.
"Little rats should know their place." One of them hissed, Crime Alley's accent making his t's come out hard and sharp. Jason cowered more, pressing his arms over his head.
"I couldn't agree more." A soft voice cut in. The entire group was startled by the appearance of a teenager wearing one of those rich-kid uniforms —Gotham Academy —at the entrance to the alley. Jason had been grateful for his appearance.
He planned to make a run for it the second the group realized the new guy came from money. Their eyes filled with greed as the teenager, one of the prettiest people Jason had ever seen, casually walked into the light, and he just broadcast another way the street gang could make money off him.
Another thing Jason learned early on was that you could never be too pretty on the streets. Bad things happened to folk like that.
"Well, aren't you-" Whatever the leader-the one with the metal pipe-was gearing up to say was lost as the pretty stranger pointed at him with cold, dead eyes and whispered.
"Johnny Smith says he wants you."
The pipe weilder scoffs, "I killed Johnny Smith."
Jason had never thought about death before, not in the sense of what the grim reaper looked like, but the smile that cut across Danny Fenton-Wayne's face was how he pictured it for years to come as he whispered. "I know. The spirits want you. Johnny wants you."
Pipe metal's leg was suddenly yanked out from underneath him as he was dragged further into the darkness of the alley by an invincible force. His screams echoed and then faded as if he was thrown down a sewer, fading away into nothingness. The last thing anyone heard was his pleas. "Johnny! Johnny, I'm sorry. I'm sorry!"
Everyone was frozen in horror as the pretty teenager giggled. His dull, soul-searching eyes pinned everyone in place as he whispered. "Do you want me to ask the spirits if they want any new friends?"
They ran, not a single one bothering to answer, and Jason was left trembling on the floor as Danny Fenton-Wayne carefully walked up to tower over his fallen form. "Hello, Mr. Todd"
"H-how do you know my name?"
Danny tilted his head, then pulled out a miniature doll of Jason and his mother, crocheted with care and precision. It sent a spike of utter terror through him, even if he desperately wanted one of his mom. Jason hadn't been able to save a photo when the social services people had taken him. "Here. Take this to the clinic down in Crime Alley. They can fix you right up. I'm going to pick up my friend; these idiots attacked him, and he needs medical attention. Then I'm going to hunt them all down and make them pay. You best be off the streets by the,n yeah?"
Jason hadn't lingered to ask any more questions. Years later, he still has the dolls Danny made him sitting on his bed.

Danny was having a terrible day, or more like a terrible week. His parents had discovered that he was Phantom, and had immediately attacked him. The only reason he had managed to get away through the portal was Jazz holding them back as she shouted at him to run.
Once in the ghost zone Clockwork was instantly by his side leading him to Far Frozen to help with his injuries. Once the worst of it was over Clockwork told him that to help keep him safe he was sending Danny far away from Amity; to Gotham. Whether he agreed or not didn't seem to matter as in a blink of an eye Danny finds himself standing in an alleyway with nothing more than what he already had.
The next few days were hard, and Danny was really trying not to let that get him down too much. So it only makes sense that the universe would take that as a challenge to do worse by raining.
When walking aimlessly in the grocery store to escape the rain he was absent mindlessly picking things up, reading them, and putting them down. That seemed to be a problem for some people though as in the next moment an older woman is grabbing his arm, and demanding him to put back what he was going to steal and asking where his parents are.
The woman doesn't even give him a chance to respond though before she is shouting at and pulling Danny towards an older teen (Tim) who is also standing in the aisle and now staring at them with wide eyes as they approach.
"You need to keep a better track of your little brother! I caught him trying to steal while you were over here looking at your phone!"
The older teen makes eye contact with those words. Now, Danny will admit that while this guy and him did look oddly a-like they weren't brothers, or at least he hoped that was the case. He would know if he was adopted right? Probably.
"Yes," Tim reaches out and pulls Danny out of the woman's grasp; tucking Danny into his side, "I'll make sure to do that thank you."
The woman obviously wants to continue talking, but before she can Tim is already walking away from her with Danny right next to him.
Danny is so thankful that Tim was willing to not correct the woman that he doesn't even notice when Tim plucks a couple hairs from him.
Tim did not like grocery stores. He knew it showed his privilege and Jason never let him forget that he had grown up with the silver spoon, but he still didn’t like them. When he was a kid his parents always had groceries delivered and for the most part Alfred did the same. Tim certainly only ordered his own groceries, but sometimes he still had to go to one himself.
Part of the reason he hated shopping so much was because of the attention he always attracted. When he dressed up he got recognized as Tim Drake-Wayne and was mobbed by either paparazzi trying to get a quick scoop or actual mobsters looking to kidnap him and get a ransom. When he dressed down every store clerk seemed to assume he was there to steal. Dick said it was because his Bat-paranoia that had him constantly on the lookout for threats came across as someone up to no good, afraid of getting caught.
He idly watched a younger teen from the corner of his eye. The scruffy looking teen picked up one of the jars off the shelf and carefully read it then put it back. Jason and Cass had both talked about how that was a way to push off attention if you weren’t planning on buying anything and just needed somewhere out of the weather. More power to him, honestly, the stormfront that had burst was looking to last another week.
Tim moved into a different aisle so the kid didn’t get caught up in the usual negative attention that plagued him when he was out in public. He finally found the energy drinks and was staring at them trying to decide if he wanted to try and sneak them past Alfred to store them in the manor where he would need them the most frequently or if it was safer to hide them in his nest when said negative attention landed in the form of a screeching Karen.
He pulled off one ear of his headphones so he could at least pretend to listen to whatever she was howling about. God damn, he had fought actual supervillians with less damaging sonic attacks than this woman. It took him a second to realize she had dragged over the other teenager and was ruthlessly shaking him by the arm.
"You need to keep a better track of your little brother! I caught him trying to steal while you were over here looking at your phone!" She screeched.
Tim made eye contact with the kid and all his Bat-training roared to life as he took in numerous details in a glance. The kid’s unwashed hair (black), his wide, scared eyes (blue) with almost racoon-dark rings under his eyes, his pale skin with visible bruises and cuts. Tim couldn’t tell definitively if this kid was related or not, but the very fact that he looked close enough to pass at the Wayne Manor dinner, made him pay attention. Even disregarding the fact that both Jack and Janet Drake could have cheated on each other and would absolutely hide the fact if a bastard came of it, there was always clones as a possibility.
"Yes," Tim reached out and pulled the kid out of the woman's grasp; tucking him into his side, "I'll make sure to do that thank you."
He could see her taking a breath to start up another tirade, but quite frankly, Tim did not have the patience for it and he could feel this kid shivering against him. So he turned the pair of them, keeping the kid pressed against his side, and speed walked away. Once they were out of sight, Tim spun so he could face this kid.
“Hey man, thanks for the save, I’m so sorry you had to get dragged into that.” The kid said, practically ready to apologize for his entire existence right there.
“Don’t worry about it, I could get you away from her so I did. It’s no problem. My name’s Tim, what’s yours?”
“Uh, Danny.”
Tim visually checked the newly named Danny over, he could see a few signs of hidden or older injuries on top of the bruises and exhaustion. And god damn did they look like brothers. Though to be fair, Tim certainly wasn't related to Dick or Jason and he looked pretty similar to them in the right lighting. He could tell that Danny was growing uncomfortable with the inspection.
“You've still got your backpack? Good. Let's finish our shopping and get out of here before anyone else throws a fit.”
Danny blanched, his eyes darting around. Tim smiled and used a card trick Dick had taught him to show his credit card.
“Don't worry little brother! I've got dad's card so get what you want.”
Danny looked nervous but followed along while Tim led him through the store. Tim started filling his basket with no prep needed foods and some other basics. Bruce had done a lot of research when he first took up the mantle on what best met the needs of the city's unhoused population. Jason had almost completely rewritten the list during his time at Robin. Tim shopped efficiently, knowing he didn't have long before Danny's fragile trust ran out.
“You don’t actually have to buy me things you know.” Danny whispered.
“Well she thinks you’re my brother, so I have to show that I’m a good one. Family obligations and all that.”
“I guess I understand that.” He sounded sad, and there was a weight to his words that worried Tim.
“What brings you to Gotham?” Tim asked as he picked out a small first aid kit.
“Is it that obvious I'm not from around here? Is it the accent?”
“Yeah partially, but also most Gotham kids would have pulled a knife if someone tried to manhandle them like that.”
“Oh.” Danny looked confused for a moment before shaking his head. “I'm here looking for someone. They’re supposed to live here in Gotham. I’m hoping I can stay with them for a little bit. ”
“Are you sure you’re not looking for me? If you’re looking for a sibling, we already look alike.”
Danny gave him a look, before focusing on the shelves around them.
“I don’t think so, well, unless…” Danny gave him another look, a hint of color rising in his cheeks. “Unless you, you know, changed, since you were born. I’m looking for my sister.”
“Oh, nah. If I was going to transition I’d be more likely to go the other way.” Tim said with a laugh, though Danny looked even more concerned.
“You can do that if you want to, you know!” He seemed desperate for Tim to understand, which was both a little touching and a little heartbreaking.
“Yeah I could, but family obligations again.”
Danny fell silent and looked upset, but like he didn't have the words to say to help as they finished their shopping, still under the watchful gaze of the shrieking wretch, who had at least fallen silent and stayed far enough back that she couldn’t hear their quiet conversation.
They checked out with a cashier who clearly wasn't paid enough to pay them any mind. Tim took advantage of packing Danny's backpack with what he had purchased to hide a number of $20 bills among the purchases. No doubt Danny wouldn't trust the offer if Tim just handed him the money outright, but this way he could make sure the kid was taken care of.
The two boys walked out of the store and stood under the awning to look at the rain still pouring down outside. He reached over and playfully mussed Danny's hair. Danny batted his hand away in annoyance, but not before Tim managed to place a tracker on his hoodie and snag a stray hair. If there was even a chance that this was related, Tim would do everything to make sure he was safe.
“Alight. See you around Danny, stay safe.” Tim said.
Danny gave him a nod and one last look of confusion before turning away. Tim left to head to his car and was ready to drive to the cave to test the sample when an alert from his watch grabbed his attention. He pulled a comm device from the watch and slipped it into his ear.
“Red Robin online.” He said.
“Arkham breakout, Red.” The heavily modulated voice of Oracle reported. “We need all hands on deck.”
“Copy that. I’m a few minutes away from the closest safe house to suit up.”
“Understood. Patching you through to comms.”
Tim’s ear was filled with updates from the other bats. An explosion had rocked Arkham. Considering the two-colored pyrotechnics best guesses were that Two-Face was the one staging the breakout, though who knew who else would take advantage of the chaos.
He grimaced and pulled up his trackers on his car’s screen. He could see Bruce and Damian heading towards the Asylum. Dick was racing across from Bludhaven while Jason was circling in Crime Alley, daring any to harm the streets he had claimed. Tim’s own marker was on the other side of the city from the others. Right next to his was the blinking marker for the tracker he had put on Danny’s hoodie. He was about to dismiss the marker’s token when it suddenly pulsed one last signal and went silent.
“Fuck.” Tim hissed. Danny must have found the tracker and destroyed it.
“Language Little Bird!” Dick’s voice forcefully reminded Tim that he was on an open channel.
“Red Robin! Report.” Batman barked.
Tim allowed himself a moment to sigh before he switched into debrief mode.
“I am unharmed and in no danger. A personal tracker I was monitoring was destroyed. I don’t believe this relates to the breakout.”
“Oh a personal tracker? Who are you tracking?” Dick asked, his voice both genuinely curious and obnoxiously over the top.
“Just so you know, Replacement, stalking isn’t how you make actual friends.” Jason’s voice carried his usual derisive tone.
Tim wanted to pull his hair out. If he didn’t say anything they would continue to harass him when they should be paying attention to the breakout. If he did they would go all “Bat-paranoia” on Danny. (Just like Tim himself had done and fully planned on continuing too. Yes, he was self-aware. No, that would not stop him.) Danny had already found one tracker, if he had to suddenly deal with the entire Bat-clan after him he might run and considering he had flown under their radar so far, he might completely disappear. Even if Danny wasn’t actually his brother (yet), Tim didn’t want to put that kind of pressure on him.
He hopped out of his car moments after pulling into the parking garage of the safehouse and ran to where a spare uniform was stored. The hair he had snagged went into an evidence bag, then he started to report while getting dressed.
“Fine! I’ll answer but we need to focus on the current breakout. And you have to promise not to go all Bat-stalker on him!”
“-Pot and kettle, Drake-”
“-Oh little bird has a boyfriend-”
“-Names!-”
“-Jesus, you are all useless-”
Tim ignored the voices shouting over each other as he mounted his motorcycle. He angrily kicked his bike into gear.
“He’s not my boyfriend, I think he might be my brother!” Tim enjoyed the silence his words brought for a moment before he continued. “I ran into Danny at the corner mart, a woman mistook him for my brother and after seeing him I almost believed it myself. He looked like he had been living on the streets. I didn’t think he would trust me to bring him to the manor and I didn’t know for sure, so I bought him some food, snagged a hair to test and placed a tracker so I could find him again. Unfortunately, he must have found the tracker.”
“Fuck.” Jason growled softly.
“Fuck indeed.”
“Language, Little Bird!”
Tim groaned and focused on weaving through traffic to meet with the others to put the fires around Arkham.
Here's my take. I hope you enjoy! I'm going to add more later. I'm finally able to write again and I'm going to make it everyone else's problem.
Also here are some random headcanons I came up with while writing this. First of all: all of the Bat-fam are so weird with money and in so many different ways. Tim and Bruce were raised uber rich. They will put every charge on a black, metal credit card. Bruce rarely carries anything lower than a fifty in cash, and will just write off any extra as a tip. Tim carries 20s in a bunch of different hiding spots around his person. Dick and Damian are raised very differently, but money is basically fake for both of them. No matter how well or poorly the circus was doing Dick would have been taken care of by those around him, and Damian grew up in the assassins and only knew about money as a foriegn concept. Jason always pays in cash, always carries cash on him in a bunch of hiding spots, but usually like really small amounts. He has three dollars in his boot, because that's what he had to do as kid on the streets.
Ear pieces! Bruce and Dick lean into their rich and ditzy personas and always have ear pieces in. They easily pass them off as the latest airpod or whatever and no one questions them. Tim is too paranoid of sound based mind control so won't wear the earpiece all the time, plus they impact the quality of his music (I head canon him as a audiophile) He gets alerts on his smart watch then pulls the earpiece out of a secret container in the watch. Jason can't be bothered to wear an earpiece unless he's under cover. His helmet has comms and when he's out of costume he wants to be left alone. Damian hates the rules his school has about technology or he would do the same as Bruce, he has to hide his ear piece in the pencil case for his art supplies.
Exhaustion hung in the air of the Batcave. It clung to each of the people within the cave like a thick miasma and weighed on them all like the thick blankets they all longed for. Alfred fussed over Damian who probably had some cracked ribs and would be benched for a while. Dick hovered, ignoring his own probable concussion and repeated instructions to sit down, as he checked in on the rest of the family. Bruce showed his age as he gingerly pulled pieces of his armor off, his movements stiff from the fighting. Even Jason hadn’t immediately fled the cave for his own safehouses, instead he had collapsed on one of the cave couches and may have fallen asleep in his armor and helmet.
Tim tiredly dragged himself to the Bat-computer. It had been a long, almost eight hours. Two-Face was captured once more, fortunately Bruce knew which buttons to push on the former DA and was able to instigate a personal confrontation that led to his arrest. There were a few other rogues missing once the fires were out and the riot quelled, which was going to be a problem eventually. Oracle was already working on trying to track them down.
However, the biggest concern was Jason mentioning that Black Mask had been making moves again, trying to push into Crime Alley, sending more drugs and thugs into Jason’s turf. While Two-Face may have orchestrated this breakout, he had outside help that seemed to point to Black Mask. He hadn’t been active since Red Hood had smashed through his organization.
He had one thing that had been weighing on his mind all night. Was Danny his brother? Yeah Danny said he was looking for a sister, but civilian records were never that accurate, and it would be just like Jack or Janet to further obfuscate the records to keep an extramarital baby from getting tracked back to them. He set the DNA sequencer to run then went for the showers.
By the time he was clean and changed the creeping light of dawn could be seen coming through the windows on the security cameras in the manor. Damian and Dick had already been called out from their school and work respectively. Jason was now snoring on the couch, the sound coming out like garbled growling through his helmet’s speakers. He would be miserable when he eventually woke up and realized he slept in his armor. Alfred was fruitlessly trying to herd the Bats up to get a proper sleep in the Manor, but everyone was unsubtly hanging around to see the results of the DNA test.
He knew they wouldn’t be able to keep their noses out of it. He might have to ask Alfred to help him keep the others in line if Danny was his brother. Otherwise it would be a mad dash to try and find him and Tim was trying to spare him from any Bat-stalking other than his own.
Tim settled at the Bat-chair in a pair of loose sweats with a towel draped around his shoulders. Everyone else was back in civies, fighting off sleep in their own way as they waited for the computer. Even Damian, who seemed to hate all things Tim Drake, was lingering to see what the results would be.
When the chime finally echoed through the cave, Tim couldn’t tell if he was relieved or not. The only reason it would process that fast was if it was a close match to someone already flagged in the system. Namely the Bats, their families, or their close allies. Tim pulled up the analysis on the large screen as the rest gathered around his shoulders.
Danny’s DNA had some weird markers that the computer either didn’t recognize or needed more time to analyze, but was otherwise complete. There was no record or profile in the Bat-computer, unsurprisingly considering Tim had only just met him, so the computer began searching for connections. The first person must be Danny’s mom, someone Tim didn’t recognize. She had dark hair just like Danny, though hers was long. It felt like a gut punch to see that she was deceased, apparently having died fourteen years ago. She must have died right after Danny was born.
Tim could tell that the others were still processing that information by the way they were muttering together, when the next parent popped up. He only needed a fraction of a second to recognize the father. His hand whipped out in an instant tabbed to a different screen hiding the information. He stood, spinning out of his chair as the others shouted and complained.
“Bruce, you need to leave the cave.” Tim demanded over the noise of the others.
“Tim, I-”
“NO!” Tim shouted, silencing the others with his rare display of temper. “You’ve already proven you can’t handle this well. You need to leave the cave.”
“If he’s mine-”
“He’s not. And I wouldn’t hide that from you.” Tim softened his voice enough that Bruce believed him. “I know who his father is, and I don’t believe you can be objective with this case. Please leave the cave.”
Bruce looked conflicted, but Alfred appearing at his side to escort him upstairs was enough to convince him to leave. He looked back several times as he walked up the stairs to the manor but he left.
Tim waited until he was certain Bruce was gone before he quickly turned and printed off the page before running a program he had created specifically to hide his activities from Bruce, which deleted his history since his last log-in. He pulled the paper off the printer and stared down at it, his eyes burning. There, still warm from the printer, was Arthur Brown. His list of aliases and crimes followed his picture.
And underneath Danny’s parents was listed another family connection, half-sister. Stephanie Brown. Tim felt rare tears fall as he thought of his fallen friend.
.
Prior to Red Hood’s fiery emergence onto the scenes, before Damian’s existence had been revealed, before Bruce had fostered Duke, for a brief time Stephanie Brown had taken up the mantle of Robin. Tim had made a solid attempt at returning to civilian life, hanging up his own cape and trying to be a good son for his returned father.
Stephanie had shown her intelligence and dedication, taking on the training that Bruce had put Dick, Jason and Tim through. In many ways she was the best of the Robins. She could keep the rogues off balance with her chatter like Dick, she could be a voice for the poor and downtrodden like Jason, and she could solve even the hardest mysteries and riddles like Tim. Unfortunately, she also had her share of their flaws. She was angry, stubborn, and insubordinate. In many ways she was justified, having had to take up the cape to stop her own father from committing crimes, and she had a hard life even before that.
And Bruce… Bruce, despite having raised, trained and worked with three teen boys before, still wasn’t good at understanding kids. The two of them fought at every turn, and because Steph wasn’t actually his child, and she had become Spoiler on her own, there was a limit of what he could do to punish her for her failures, real or blown out of proportion. When he finally tried to bench her for good, she struck out alone, stealing what she needed from the Batcave, including one of Bruce’s secret plans for dealing with Gotham’s crime-filled streets.
She actually managed to set the plan up and run it almost perfectly without any support or equipment from Batman. Until Bruce’s typical secret keeping ways came back and bit them all. The conclusion of the gang war Stephanie had started should have ended up with someone by the name of Matches Malone as the new head of all organized crime in Gotham. Except Bruce had never trusted Steph with the information that Matches was simply a pseudonym he used when he needed to go undercover. With no Matches to take the head, Gotham dissolved into a city spanning war.
Stephanie tried to keep control of the war, but it was soon out of her hands, and eventually she was captured by Black Mask. Leslie Tompkins did her best to save her life once Stephanie was eventually rescued, but her torture at the hands of Black Mask was too severe. Stephanie Brown died in Leslie’s clinic.
Tim had been devastated when he had learned she had died. Bruce tried to blame Leslie and have her kicked out of the city, but Tim was able to talk him around. Tim returned as Robin to Batman’s side. Eventually Damian joined the family, Bruce was briefly lost to time, and Tim became Red Robin. Then after Bruce was found Jason came back to the city with all the chaos that followed and eventually led to a tenuous truce between the Red Hood and the Bats. By the time Duke joined the family the dynamic had settled into its current state.
With everything life had thrown at him in the recent years, Tim didn’t feel like he ever had a chance to properly mourn the loss of Stephanie. They had dated for a time and while their relationship was as rocky as every Bat’s relationships, and they eventually broke up, he still considered her to be one of his closest friends outside of Young Justice. He missed her.
The only person who was more affected than Tim was Cass. She blamed Bruce and refused to work closely with him again. Something she saw in his body language whenever Stepanie came up set her off every time. She now worked exclusively with Oracle and her Birds of Prey, taking missions all over the world. Tim knew she was absolutely opposed to taking a life, and was one of the only Bats that would likely never cross that line, but that first night after she had found out was the closest Tim had ever seen her to killing someone.
.
Now Tim was staring down at results that showed that Steph had a brother. Her shit-head, bastard of a father must have cheated on her mom. He would have definitely had the resources to hide the affair, though Tim was uncertain if he knew about the pregnancy. Had he known and abandoned Danny and his mother with no support? Or did he never look into her again? Did he even know she had died?
Danny must have been put up for adoption. Tim would have to track that down. Why wasn’t he either in foster care or with his adopted parents? Had he been raised in Gotham? Surely one of the Bats would have run into him at some point if he had. If not, where had he grown up? Had he been safe? Cared for? Loved? Tim didn’t know and he needed to-
“Tim!” Dick voice shook him free from his thoughts. “You’re spiraling. Whatever is going on in that big brain of yours, just know, we’ll find him. We’ll make sure he’s taken care of, even if he never sets foot in the manor.”
Tim nodded numbly, before looking back at the paper in his hands.
“You’re right. We’ll take care of him. Bruce can’t know. Whatever his problem was with Steph I don’t want it to affect Danny, he can’t be objective about anything to do with her.” Tim said.
He actually had a pretty good idea of what Bruce’s problem was. He saw all failures and mistakes as a personal failing. If something happened to someone he had trained, then clearly he hadn’t trained them enough. He should have done a better job of benching them and ensuring they stayed benched. Whatever. He always blamed himself, but because he had the emotional range of a cup of day old coffee, it came across as him blaming those around him. And with that came him pointing out every flaw and problem of those around him in some misguided attempt at preventing the mistakes from happening again.
Bruce had done that with all them at one point or another. Dick when he quit as Robin and left to form the Teen Titans. Jason for his anger, and expanding on his flaws even more after his death. Damian had to deal with it for the mistake of being born into the League of Assassins. Even Tim had more than his fair share of Bruce’s ire.
Regardless of Bruce’s emotional problems, they needed to find Danny. They needed to make certain he was safe and wanted for nothing. It was the least the Bats owed Stephanie’s brother.
“Oh my god.” Jason muttered, having woken up during the noise and finally removed his helmet.
“What now?”
“Someone needs to tell Cass.”
“Oh shit.”
I'm playing around with the time line a lot. DC cannon is my sandbox and I'm making castles. Also I'm a hurt comfort author, so there will be comfort in the future eventually. I've got a couple more sections planned for this story.
Danny changed from his Ghost form to human, allowing invisibility to fall off him like a coat dropped in the doorway after a long day. He had kept an invisible eye on the conflict between the Bats and the inmates of Arkham. While Jazz had many opinions on the Asylum and how those who were sent there were treated, Danny knew that a riot or breakout at the Asylum would only mean danger spilling out into the rest of the city.
He had caught and knocked out a few of the inmates, including some weirdo with a knife and a bunch of tally marks all over his body. He kept himself invisible and carefully knocked each of them out in one blow so they wouldn’t even know that they weren’t downed by one of the Bats. He wanted to do more, but he absolutely couldn’t be caught there.
The last thing he wanted was to intervene and land on the radar of Batman. Batman was part of the Justice League. The GIW had already contacted the League to request aid in his capture. Tucker had seen the files before Danny had fled, his wounds barely stapled closed from his time with them. The last thing Danny had been able to do before losing contact was to send a duplicate flying north, to lead the agents away from his friends and Jazz.
He knew they were being watched, their every communication was monitored. If he made contact in any way, they could all get dragged away to the GIW’s “labs.” He couldn’t risk it. As soon as his duplicate had left, he hugged his friends goodbye one last time and Danny had hitchhiked his way to Gotham City.
Gotham had a couple of benefits even with the presence of the Bats. One: no one would notice the presence of one more homeless teen on the streets. Two: the city was cursed from the sewers to the skyscrapers and that would help delay the GIW if they searched the city for him. Three, and worst: so many people died in the city that the streets were thick with ectoplasm, rank ectoplasm, that stank of fear and pain, but ectoplasm enough for a halfa to heal even the worst injuries.
And by all the Ancients, Danny had the worst fucking injuries. Tucker and Sam had managed to staple his chest closed, in between Tucker throwing up and Sam swearing a blue storm. He didn’t actually have half the things that were supposed to go inside his chest, but if being a halfa had any benefit it allowed him to survive horrific injuries. He had only managed to regrow the bones in his hand by spending two nights in a cemetery on the way to Gotham.
The fourth reason he had come to Gotham was he hoped to be able to meet his sister somewhere in the city. Not Jazz, she was safe at her college where she pretended to be desperately searching for him so no one would suspect her. Not Ellie either, Danny’s clone had disappeared into the Paris catacombs and had promised to stay there until it was safe. The GIW didn’t currently have authority outside the United States, but the Justice League did, and neither of them were going to risk her getting mistaken for Danny and getting captured by them.
No, the sister that apparently lived in Gotham was a girl named Stephanie. That realization had been one of a number of unpleasant realizations. Apparently Danny was adopted. Jazz had known, because she had been there when they picked him up from the foster home, though she was still surprised that the Fentons had been allowed to adopt at all. His birth mother had died shortly after he was born, but she had at least been able to put down his information on his birth certificate, including the name of his birth father, Arthur Brown.
Researching his father was immediately disappointing. Arthur Brown was a criminal who tried to place himself as equal to Batman. Jazz called it an incredible act of ego and sign of the fragility of Arthur’s sense of self, that he had to challenge someone who was known to be one of the smartest heroes. Arthur had been arrested and as far as Danny could tell was still in prison.
However, other than making Danny a bastard and abandoning his birth mother, Arthur apparently had done one other thing, he had a daughter, Stephanie Brown. The last Danny had looked into her, a couple of years ago, she was hoping to move out from the dark shadow of her father and become a nursing student. Danny definitely didn’t bring up that he felt insecure considering both his blood and adopted sisters were so smart and going into such complicated fields, but somehow Jazz was still able to guess and gave him a whole lecture on self-worth.
Danny doesn’t really care that much about the differences between an adopted family and a blood family. While it had been an unpleasant discovery, he was happy once he came to terms with it. He and Jazz would both love to meet Stephanie and get to know her for herself, not simply because of a blood tie. They had held off at first so they didn’t expose her to the chaos that was the elder Fentons, especially if they thought a ghost was around. Then after Danny’s accident he was so busy with the ghost fights and ghost hunters he couldn’t.
Now however, Danny needed to meet her. He needed to form a relationship with her. Not strictly because of their blood relation, but because he was a ghost without a Fraid. Specifically a heavily injured ghost who had to abandon his Fraid to keep them safe. Frostbite had stressed how important it was that a young ghost like Phantom have a Fraid, a family, chosen or otherwise, around them. Part of a ghost’s image of themselves, their very form was shaped by their relationships with others. Without those bonds he may not be able to heal, or if he faces too much stress, he might discorporate and face his true and final death.
Ectoplasm and Fraid bonds didn’t care for laws or blood anymore than Danny did. He didn’t have a bond with the parents who raised him at all. That had been severed with the same knife they had used to cut into his arms to examine his tendons when they captured him, though it had been frail and struggling long before that. With Tucker, Sam and Jazz so far away, he needed someone to make new bonds with, and hopefully Stephanie would be willing to at least meet him.
Danny shook his head free of his hopes as he slipped out of an alley and onto a Gotham street on the opposite side of the city. With the return of his human body returned the ache and pain from his injuries, and the weight of his now full back-pack. That nice guy at the store had been strangely willing to spend a bunch of money on some random nobody. He definitely had money, but he didn’t seem as big of a fruit-loop as Vlad, so Danny was willing to trust him a little.
“Hey punk!”
He had food a plenty, ectoplasm thrumming through his veins trying to patch his wounds back together, and apparently Tim had even hidden some cash among the purchases. Danny was feeling pretty good. He was still sad that Tim wasn’t able to live his truth like Danny was, but now it seemed to be the perfect time to start the search for Stephanie. He thought maybe he could find some information on her in the library.
“I’m talking to you, you twerp!”
Danny side-stepped someone in his way, as he walked with his hood down to keep some of the heavy rain out of his eyes. If he couldn’t find anything at the library maybe he could inquire at one of the local colleges? If he learned one thing from Jazz’s endless lectures it was that community college was the way to go if you wanted to avoid as many loans as possible, and if Stephanie was paying her way through college while their father was in prison, she would definitely want to save money.
“You fucking fucker.”
He gasped as a knife slid between his ribs. He reacted on instinct, a punch flying out with all his ghostly strength, as images of labs and his parents hovering over him, their own knives in their hands flashed through his mind.
Danny eventually was able to take a shaky breath to see some thug with a black skull on his jacket crumpled against a heavily dented car. He couldn’t tell if he was still breathing. But when he looked down he could see the handle of a knife sticking out of his side. He wheezed, and stayed on his feet by sheer force of will.
“Fuck.”
.
Leslie Tompkins ran one of the best no-questions-asked clinics in Gotham. Part of the reason hers was the best was simply due to funding. Her clinic received frequent “anonymous” donations, which usually just happened to follow after she had performed necessary medical treatments to one of the Bats. The other part came down to protection. Between the Bats, the Red Hood Gang and the Gotham Goonion, there were a lot of people invested in keeping her doors open, no one who messed with her or her clinic would be able to stay out of the hospital for more than a week. That is if they weren’t sent straight to the morgue.
She had earned that respect by treating everyone who walked into her clinic equally. Rogue or Bat, goon or cop, random citizen or outsider, everyone received care in her clinic if they needed it. She had stitched up a cut from a Batarang on the Joker’s hand just a few months ago. Then when he tried to poison her for daring to see him so vulnerable, Harley Quin broke both of his hands, fortunately not undoing Leslie’s hard work. She was quite familiar with Harley having to patch her up numerous times after “lover’s quarrels" between the two before they eventually broke up for good.
When a teenager with a knife stuck in his ribs stumbled in she braced herself and brought him back, ready to continue not asking any questions, and just treating the injury. She immediately wanted to go against her reputation and start asking questions when she saw the vivisection scar that stretched up the boy’s torso, neatly bisecting his top surgery scars. That desire became even stronger when he told her not to worry about his probable punctured lung because he didn’t have most of the organs on that side yet. She ground her teeth and focused on making her stitches as neat as possible.
“Would you at least like me to remove the staples and put in neater stitches?” She ground the question out.
He looked down at the messy staples, then looked up at her with stars in his eyes.
“You can do that? We tried the best we could, but we didn’t have anything else that would work.”
Leslie gave him a quick nod and tied off the first set of stitches. Why did this kid seem so familiar to her? Sure he looked like any of the Waynes, though only Timothy was as deathly pale, but there was something else. Something about him.
“I hadn’t even heard this guy coming. I guess that’s what I get for not paying attention in a city like Gotham. My friends always said my situational awareness would get me killed again, and I guess they were right! It’s like I’ve met the nicest people in Gotham like this guy who gave me money and food earlier and now I’ve met the meanest people.”
Danny was apparently someone who talked to distract himself from the pain. At least with how lively he was talking whatever meta abilities he had probably included a healing factor. Thank god.
“Like who just stabs a guy! Like I’m here looking for my sister, trying to find a library, and he just ups and stabs me. Oh well. Things were looking a little too bright, so I guess with my luck I was due. At least I was able to keep my organs this time.”
Leslie breathed through her confusion and rage. What the fuck had this kid been through already? Jesus fucking christ. She kept up her work, allowing Danny’s chatter to wash over her. He had told her that anesthetic didn’t work on him, which unfortunately made sense. Considering she only had a small supply of meta strength medication on hand, he had insisted he didn’t want her to waste any on him.
When she had finally completed the last stitch on the massive injury on his chest, which was already healed significantly, she sat back, washed her hands and breathed a quiet sigh of relief. There was a bottle of vodka in the drawer of her desk that she had been given as payment for treating one of Penguin’s goons and it was calling her name.
“Tell me buddy. What name would you like to put on the paperwork?” As a clinic she had to at least pretend to keep records even if she promptly burned them.
“Danny…uh…” He looked aside and down for a moment before looking at her again. “Brown! Danny Brown.”
She raised an eyebrow at him, then she wrote the name down on her paper.
“Just a word of advice, Danny, you have got to learn to lie better if you want to make it in this town. Though kudos on the generic last name, no one will be able to find dirt on a name like that.”
“It’s not a lie! It’s… new.” He paused. “I’m looking for my sister, and her last name is Brown, and hopefully she wouldn’t mind if I use it too.”
“Alright then, Danny Brown. Try not to get stabbed again. But if you do, my door is open.” Leslie said as she signed off the sheet and put it into the burn pile. The encampment on fourth could use some material to keep them warm with all the rain.
“Thanks doc! See ya!” Danny smiled as he skipped out the door.
Leslie flinched and raced after him, but Danny had already disappeared into the rain. That smile. A thousand small details suddenly cascaded through her mind. That smile that was so familiar, the shape of his face, the texture of his hair, the blue of his eyes. He was looking for a sister. He wanted to borrow her last name.
She could remember the moment perfectly when Stephanie Brown had been the one bleeding in her clinic. She had volunteered in the clinic before Gotham descended into that massive gang war. Leslie could perfectly remember the way she would smile as she walked out the door. And she could perfectly remember the moment when Stephanie’s heart stopped on her table.
Have you ever been so broke that you've resorted to gigs that normally would make you seem like a minor villains goon?
Danny has.
Being practically broke, drowning in constant student debt, college student has led to some of the weirdest side gigs Danny has ever done. He can at the very least confirm that as he continues his degree in Astrophysics at MIT.
But in all honesty, he's not very picky or upset about how weird they are. Danny would rather do something strange once, then continue drowning in debt the way he was currently.
Student debt was not a joke.
And even if it were, it wasn't a very funny one, considering he himself was just scraping by on his two front teeth due to them.
Either way, the point was Danny's done practically everything in Gotham possible just to make some small bits of cash here and there. Danny only ever goes to Gotham for the sake of an extra ectoplasm boost on top of the fact it has the most jobs out of any city possible due to the crime rate.
He's been a temporary goon and a guard to several different warehouses throughout Gotham & New York City (most times there isn't even anyone or anything in them but a jobs a job). He's been in charge of covering a front temporarily for what looks like fake companies (nothing to do with drug dealing or the mob for some reason, he usually tries to stay clear of those offers).
He also was a tester for some of Mr. Nygma's traps being hired for the sheer fact that he couldn't really die and therefore could test several of Mr.Nygma's traps at once.
He took a temp job to help feed Dr.Quinzel's pet hyenas when she was in Arkham for awhile as well as pet sit. That one was his favorite honestly, Lou and Bud were sweethearts despite the carnage thing.
He recently had even been a personal insta-cart driver for a certain Penguin mob-boss strangely enough (until the guy got sent back to Arkham that is).
Danny really isn't picky when it comes to jobs unless it was just something mostly immoral and just insane, like drug dealing and/or murder & world or several life ending situations or just involved with someone like the Joker.
It's gotten to a point that the average Gotham goon usually recognizes him when he passes by during a job visit. They tended to recommend him a new job when they saw him, knowing he was just as eager as they were in this economy.
Which is how he ended up here, sitting in an empty warehouse yet again for possibly another hour before he could leave and get paid. Danny was sat on the floor doing his advanced calc homework and trying not to scream about it as he sat there.
It was something he did when the nights were slower honestly. The night was ruined quickly after that though when the glass shattered above him and scattered all over his homework and the rest of the ground.
Danny only sighed and mourned the possible money he'd be losing to that mess before shaking the glass off of him and his papers. He didn't bother looking up at his possible attacker.
"You have got to be fuckin kidding me. Not again, Kid."
Only then does Danny look up to see who broke the window. Red Hood sounds exasperated despite the mask covering all of his real voice with a mechanical voice changer. Besides him was Nightwing who seemed just as disappointed as his partner was while putting his escrima sticks behind his back.
"Can I help you Red Pill, Blue Pill?"
That made Red Hood snort while Nightwing just sighed into his hands and dragged them down his face before responding.
"Kid, what are you doing in he- Is that homework???"
Nightwing walked closer almost sounding offended as he looked down at the mess of Danny's math that he was going to have to redo before turning in tomorrow. The thought of recopying everything made him feel angry all over again.
"The one you guys wrecked by getting glass all over it? Yes," Danny leaned back into his plastic chair provided by the Goonion. "Thanks for that by the way, I'm going to have to recopy everything before class tomorrow."
"That wouldn't be a problem if you just got a normal part-time job like a normal young adult." Red Hood snorted as Nightwings slight lecture and it made Danny roll his eyes at the both of them as he sat up.
As if he hadn't tried that route already. In between his space museum internship during the day and his thousands of classes every week, he didn't exactly fit a lot of younger adult jobs schedule.
"Do you know any nearby normal adult jobs that are hiring a current university student with millions in debt and a internship schedule that only allows them to work at night?" Danny snapped back which made Red Hood start to snort and laugh again at Nightwings expression.
"Well..." Nightwing at the very least had the decency to look sheepish as if he had thought about it genuinely and couldn't think of a thing.
"Thought so." Danny slumped against the chair again, before shutting his eyes. He waved them away as he sat back, already mentally preparing himself for another all nighter for the sake of recopying his papers.
"If thats all, I'll see you next time I get a fake listing or bad job that you guys have a tendency to break into. Go away."
Nightwing only sighed again before Danny heard his grappling hook sound off back through the broken window into the night. Red Hood only chuckled one last time before ruffling his hair.
"See you, Kid. Make sure you try to sleep before class"
Danny just huffed at him and waved him off again as Red Hood shot his grappling hook off into the night and joined Nightwing. With a sigh, Danny sat up again and grabbed his nearby backpack filled with scrap paper.
Basically Danny needs money to keep going to MIT so he continuously decides to take up jobs for hire in Gotham (and other places but mostly Gotham), which lead to him breaking a lot of laws for another cash grab.
Meanwhile, the Batfam is very concerned that they keep meeting this meta young adult (who doesn't even live in Gotham!!) who seems to continuously be running through villain placed ad offers like water to get cash.
Poor Batboys, i know people like to think most of them are more in touch with civilians and normal people because Bruce adopted them but if you think about it Dick was adopted at 9ish right? So he's lived with access to Bruce's insane wealth more than he has without it. Likely bought his apartment and car outright with his allowance instead of renting or having a car payment, Jason went from stealing to wealth at 13, so does money even have the same worth to him? Tim & Damian have always been rich, so...they could understand debt as a concept but i doubt they've actually had to live with it...
What if the Justice League helped Amity Park get rid of the GIW and the Anti-Ecto laws, but were actually convinced that ghosts can’t truly feel anything — no happiness, empathy, or sadness — that they only mimic human emotions? They still chose to intervene because the laws were inhumane and unnecessarily violent, especially considering that one of the ghosts was acting as a hero. Even if the League believes that ghosts view human life as some kind of play, they at least have the decency to recognize that harming an entire species is wrong — particularly when those same ghosts avoid killing or hurting humans themselves.
The ruins of the GIW compound still smelled of ozone and scorched metal. Danny hovered just above the cracked asphalt, watching the cleanup crews haul away twisted machinery — the kind that had once been meant to tear him apart.
Superman landed beside him with a soft thud, cape settling against the dust. “It’s over,” he said, his voice steady, calm. “You did the right thing.”
Danny didn’t look at him. “Yeah. Guess so.”
The hero gave a small nod, studying him the way scientists study something fragile but fascinating. “You know,” he said, “it’s remarkable how close your emotional responses are to human ones. The League was… surprised, honestly. You handle yourself with compassion. With restraint.”
Danny’s fingers twitched. “I am human,” he said before he could stop himself.
Superman’s expression softened — pity, gentle and infuriating. “In a way, yes. I know you like to think of yourself that way. It’s admirable, Danny. Really. You’ve built an identity, a sense of purpose — that’s rare among your kind.”
“My kind,” Danny repeated, and the words felt heavier than any chain the GIW had ever used.
Superman smiled faintly, unaware. “You’re proof that even echoes can choose to be kind.”
Danny laughed then — short, sharp, bitter. It startled them both.
“Yeah,” he said, voice quiet. “Guess we’re all just echoes, huh?”
Superman nodded, pleased at the agreement, and took off into the sky.
Danny watched him disappear into the clouds, the sound of his flight fading. The air felt too still, too empty.
He looked down at his own hands, faintly glowing green in the twilight. They trembled.
“An echo,” he whispered. “Right.”
The wind stirred, carrying away his voice.
And for the first time in a long while, Danny wondered if maybe the League was right — if he really was just pretending to feel the things he’d been fighting for.
John lit a cigarette, clearly ignoring the no smoking sign on the otherside of the room. The high rise building the league had decided to meet him, made his head feel fuzzy with oxygen loss. Though he knew it was a placebo due to his ever growing stress.
A ghost had come to him, some slinder underweight woman with blue skin and green hair, sobbing if she was real, if any of them where real. She had been dead since the 90s. All she did was ramble about what they felt, about who she was without herself. It was jarring. Most ghost –hafe dead, fully dead or some wirered comsimic horror trapped in shrodingers box– are too focused on obsessions to even consider the fact their dead most days. They know, but its like when you have a paper cut on your hand, you only realize you have it when you use hand sanitizer. A quick flash and then you can forget about till next time.
The only ghost that cling to it, are new ones and she wasn't.
John let out a breath a string of smoke spewing from his lips. He didnt draw his eyes away from the gray trail as it floated to the ceiling, not even as the door opened and Wonderwoman called the start of the meeting.
It droned on for a few moments, congratulations on theat mission, a report on small flaws and items they need to improve, the normal endless cycle that didnt get the Glue between Worlds sobbing and ceareing in chaos.
Every Ghost, no matter how old, was distraught over the idea of death, of the fact they died. Obsessions didn't help, spells didnt help, nothing he had done had stopped the Ghost of a prison warden from nesrly ceaseing to exist.
"John." Batmans roguh voice called, it dragged him out of his spiral just enough. Just enough for his gaze to sharpen with a weary ended as he stared at the people infrot of him with only one question: "What the fuck did you do?"
John's hands shook. He coukd feel seams of undead unraveling around him. Ghost that where never ment to fade, ceaseing with an endless wail.
"What do you mean?" Superman askes with that same soft Midwestern twang he uses for victims, "Dont give me that," John pointed a shakeing finger at the man "Yall did something what did you do?"
Another string unbound, snapping back at his like a whip. A pain none of the others expect John coukd feel. He was the only one that shattered his soul into thousands of tiny fragments after all, it was only him thag coukd feel eatch better on his soul slipping into nothing.
"Do you mean the Ghost?" Barry spoke up, he was playing with a ball, tossing it to eatch hand with a speed that only let John's mind prossces the after images. "What–" John ground his teeth "What Ghost?"
The dick wad— Barry — did a so-so gesture with his hands. "You know," John fucking didnt and the calm shrug of ease didnt help that fact, "destory on operatoin that borerds on the meta-humans acts, set the trapped species free, lay the town protecter to rest?"
John froze. No one— and he means no one, lays a ghost 'to rest'. They never rest, they never stand still, always doing something, the only way to let a ghost rest is if you trap it.
"Explain."
Barry shrugged– again, with that same ease as John felt another shard of himself slip into nothing— "Phantom, he was the echo protecting the town. We stopped the Ghost Invistgatoin ward, Supes gave him the okay to move on."
"You told—" John clutched at his chest the movement startling the people around him, his heart beat like a rabbit on meth, still he wet his lips and spoke, "You told, the god of the dead.. to leave?"
The room falls into a still. The sort of still that, funnily enough, only comes with death. John laughed, throwing his head back as his ribs ached. "You! You told the dead that they could leave!"
"I dont understand?" Superman, no– Superasshole said, John had to brace himself on the table. He wanted a beer, no vodka, no, something that would make him forget what he just heard. "The only way for the dead to leave is if they stop existing." It felt like explaing something to toddlers. No one seemed to realize what that ment till he opened his mouth again, "Their takeing me with them."
That set the room alight.
Everyone had something to say, everyone wanted to say something, but John didnt have the time for everyone to ask him what he ment, or if he was jokeing, or whatever blimey nonsense they could come up with.
"We can fix it right?" Zantana asked.
John just, shook his head. He didnt have the engery for banter.
"I just hope you you can fix it before the Relams pull themselves apart."
His canteen was still hafe full, and he pulled it from his trench coats pocket. Uncapping it as everyone around him argued over what to do, and bringing it to his lips with shakey hands.
Just when the alchoal hit his throat, everything went black.
So Danny has been the ghost king and ancient of space for a long time, like a long time. Sam, Val, Tucker, Dan, Dani and Jazz also became ancients.
In this AU when GIW managed to break the connection between their dimension and the Ghost Zone, leading to the collapse of their dimensions and its total destruction. Danny managed at the last moment to tear a hole in reality to the Zone and pull his classmates with him, along with Mr. Lancer.
The first few days were hard to say but time passed, his class became more and more liminal until it stopped aging, most of us becoming ghosts because they didn't die (except for the trio, Val and Jazz). Mr. Lancer becoming a librarian at the castle. Danny taking on the role of Ghost King so he could protect his friends, for politics, freeing Clockwork from the Observants (resulting in a very unfortunate fate for them).
And at some point along the way realizing to his horror that his subjects (not the ghosts who knew him before) thought his friends were his concubines, members of his harem (fortunately not Mr. Lancer, nor Dani or Dan since the two looked like him and were assumed to be his children and Jazz being known as his sister).
Since they had no obvious role in the eyes of the fiends and didn't seem to do anything obvious besides hanging around hell the King of the Infinite Realms still gave them his protection and indulged them with whatever they wanted, except for Val, Sam and Tucker who were obviously his legitimate wives (favorites).
And Dark Pariah himself had concubines before he was put in the coffin.
And his friends, like dramatic trolls who love chaos, took advantage of this and played the part, much to his horror.
Which leads to one of the Batkids (whoever you want, I was writing this thinking of Tim or Jason) ending up being sacrificed to be the wife of the Ghost King by a cult. One small problem was that the ritual was not a summoning one, and the batkid would be registered as a child/minor.
And since Danny had long installed a clause that would teleport a child sacrifice directly to his "harem" rooms, one specially arranged for when something similar happens over the years where the person is cared for by servants.
So the batkid will find himself experiencing something of a combination of horror and imperial harem drama of
Realizing that the Phantom King's favorites were allowed a lot of freedom, with the Queen of Thorns being able to disappear into a dimension for decades, without the King getting upset,to do with plants, the Pharaoh had allowed her to go anywhere she wanted whenever she wanted with the King's permission and had allowed her to get away with a lot of things.
The BatFam are of course FREAKING out cause all they can find is that Robin would be transported directly tobthe Harem courters. Where many a previous human teens were seen before (They were Danny's classmates but they dont know that).
That many never leave the keep unless they are highly favored and have carried at least 1 heir (Only Tucker and Sam really ever want to leave for extended times and the rest like to hang in the keep or leave for such short periods that the ghosts dont reconize they left) (Tucker obviously had Dani while only Sam could have produced Dan)
Now what actually happens is that the people sacrificed dont actually have anything to return to. So Danny and the others dont generally ask cause the ones who want to return to their home demension tend to be crying and asking to return.
Damian did not so they assumed he was like the others and by the time they find out he was not its going to take AWHILE to find the proper dimensions with the portal fully closed.
And time behaves differently and Halfas, ghoasts, and liminals dont age mentally or physically while in the realms so Danny is very much still 15 and Damian is also 15. They slowly grow closer and closer. Danny falling genuinly in love with Damian.
Time also progresses guicker in the realms. So after a month in Damians original dimension it has actually been like a 5 years. (They are still 15 years old lol though) when the Bats finally break into the infinity realm.
Damian though has taken a page from Jasons book and has decided he ADORES medieval romance. But which ever trope will he decide to play with in this situation?
The crack side of this would be that the batfam comes to the conclusion that the only way they'll see the batkid again is by becoming a part of the harem as well, so they research and do the ritual. It would have almost worked out except for the part where neither of them are underage and therefore have to get through an isolation period so Danny can make sure they're not creeps or something (security feature of not exposing the underage people to potentially dangerous strangers). By the time they're out of the isolation chambers (one for each, so they're not even together), Damian is nowhere to be seen. Turns out Danny finally found the right dimension and sent him back to his family (who happens to not be there anymore). Cue misunderstandings.

Danny was shipped to Gotham and he was instantly culture shocked by the amount of violence a living human have. Like, it's understandable if it's a ghost but no, this people are alive!!! So why????
Gotham was also cursed and as a protective spirit, his own protectiveness was warped into something sinister due to it.
Cue, Danny kidnapping some rouge (Red Hood included) to play a little game called "Choose your Poison".
It's where rapist (for the first round) gets to choose a door, behind that door is a rouge, and then they have to 1 v 1 that rouge. They do not get to say no, it's that or THAT but 1 v 2.
It's also livestreamed and Danny was like the host commenting the crimes and the likes. Just
Danny: And now for the next battle, the owner of the whatsamacallit fighting KI-KI-KI-KI-KILLER CROC!!!! Let's give them a round of applause!!!
Danny: In this corner we have a sorry excuse of a Father who has been pimping his daughters to the police just so he won't get jail time while selling drugs!!!
Danny: And now the police.
It gets quite an audience that will also protest and will defend Danny against the Bats.
Alternatively: Danny doesnt kidnap Red Hood, Jason approaches him first. He does a few livestreams, and Jason hears about a dramatic freaky gameshow host that’s killing rapists AND fucking with the other rogues and he is 100% down with that.
It starts with typical bat level stalking and figuring out what the Phantom Ghost Host’s deal is. All of his “victims” are exactly the kind of people Jason likes turning into obituaries. After seeing that the Phantom sentenced a particularly nasty fentanyl laced psychedelic dealer that had been on Red Hood’s Shit List for a while to death by Harley Quinn, Jason starts trying to contact him.
Minor problem, the Phantom is annoyingly hood at covering his tracks. He has a bit of a reputation, but there isnt shit about a secret identity. It’s like tracking a ghost.
Eventually, Harley fucking Quinn tells him to just use a Ouija board. Apparently, even after being kidnapped and forced to kill someone she and the Phantom are on good terms. They even have coffee together every few weeks.
So Jason summons Danny on the roof of a 7/11 on a random ass Tuesday afternoon. They’re both apprehensive at first, and Jason is sure that he came off as awkward. He ends up giving Phantom a few names he hadn’t gotten around to eliminating yet, along with their addresses and offending crimes.
From Danny’s perspective, he got summoned by this mysterious hot guy who decides to give him the names of potential targets. He’s definitely had a run in with some nasty ectoplasm, but all the information checks out, which saves Danny a bunch of time. The guy even bought him skittles from the 7/11!
Danny captures and disposes of the criminals in an appropriately dramatic fashion. Every time one of them stars on his show he thanks his “anonymous tip” and honest to god WINKS at the camera. (Jason is so normal abt this btw)
By the time the bats get around to stopping Danny, the Red Hood and the Phantom are in full blown collaboration. Bruce asks Jason if he’s heard anything, and Jason just shrugs and says “Nah, he’s just me if I became a Twitch streamer instead of a Crime Lord. Seems pretty chill, he’s been shortening my to-do list.”
“Jason this is serious, the Phantom is capable of successfully kidnapping Rogues. He captured Mr. Freeze less than an hour after he escaped from Arkham.”
“Oh yeah, guess he’s making your job easier too.”
Bruce’s eye twitches. “So you don’t know anything?”
Jason knew the Phantoms phone number, sleep schedule, and favorite flavor of ice cream.
“Nope, not a thing.”
The fifth time that Jason meets up with the Phantom (even after exchanging contact info, they prefer to meet in person) Jason is wound up about something or other. Maybe he just found out one of his higher ranking men was actually a child molester who’d been hoping on getting close to him to dodge the Red Hood’s wrath. To make matters worse, he’d been able to slip away before Jason could put a bullet in his dick.
“Oh damn. Look, if I can find this guy, do you wanna be the rogue that kills him?”
Jason pauses, looking into green eyes and realizing that the offer is fully legitimate. The Phantom would track down this slimy bastard, imprison him, and rig his game show so that Jason could kill him. Its one of the sweetest things anyone has done for him in years.
He accepts.
The show goes perfectly.
“Alrighty, you all know how this works! This fucker gets to choose a door and fight the mystery Rogue behind it. We’re going to change things up here, so behind Door 1 is the Man Bat! He’s a ‘Professional People Eater’ with a habit of tearing people’s eyes out mid flight!”
The former goon looks freaked the fuck out. Good.
“Annnnnnd behind Door 2 is the Killer Croc! He tore the limbs off the last guy he annihilated here! Soooooooo pick a door any door any door ya like!”
Now this is clearly a terrible dilemma, both options fucking despise humans and are definitely pissed to be there. Just as planned, the guy points at a third door clearly marked “EXIT” thinking he’s being smart.
“Ooooooooo you chose the mystery door! No one’s ever been clever enough for that.”
Goon suddenly has a very bad feeling about this.
“Behind Mystery Door Number 3, we have the RED HOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!” And the door is kicked down, revealing a furious Hood.
Red Hood laughs at his mortified expression and starts absolutely destroying him, covering him in bruises and snapping more then one bone. The Phantom gleefully chases away any sympathy for the man by listing every horrible thing he’d done to be there. None of the beating is enough to kill him, which is intentional. Once the guy is too injured to get off the ground, Red Hood pulls out a gun and shoots him in the dick, just like he wanted to.
He venomously spat “That was for your daughter.” Then, he stepped on the guys crotch as he made his way out of the arena.
The Red Hood was already popular with the citizens of Gotham, but people loved him even more on the game show. Especially the Crime Alley runners, who make up a good percentage of the viewers. Red Hood isn’t in the next livestream, and the Ghoulie Chat is very pouty.
So is Bruce, because he and the Bats have had about as much success as Jason in finding the Phantom.
What Bruce doesn’t know is that the rest of the family isn’t actually trying very hard. Ever since Red Hood started appearing on the Gotham Ghost Host, Jason has seemed so much happier. None of them know it, but Danny has been able to help Jason with the ectoplasm causing the Pit Rage. He’s been less snappish, he smiles more, and his eye bags have faded. He’s become one of the only people who can ruffle Damien’s hair without being stabbed. He sticks his tongue out at Tim, and the word “Replacement” is said jokingly instead of scathingly. He patrolled with Duke during the day after he said that sometimes he gets lonely. He even goes to movie night with Dick. But what really gets them is how he laughs freely, and it sounds so, so much like it did before he died.
Babs asked Jason about the Phantom, since they were rather flirty in their most recent stream. She tried to make it clear that she was asking because she wanted to know about who Jason talks to, not because Bruce wants her to take down the Phantom. She was asking because she gave a shit about Jason’s life, and he turned bright red. Jason’s eyes practically lit up when he eventually started talking about the Phantom, even as he refused to give any helpful information.
And just like that the Bats are actively preventing Bruce from stopping the Phantom. Bruce can’t trace the livestream for the life of him, because Babs did that weeks ago and buried the signal. One time, Danny breaks into the cave to ask Jason something about one of the targets. (He didn’t know it was supposed to be a secret!) and Dick sees them. He asks what the fuck they’re doing there, and then quickly tells them that they gotta leave. Damien distracts Bruce, and Tim helps Babs wipe the security footage while Duke makes sure they get out unseen. Even Alfred helps, gaslighting Bruce into believing that nothing happened and everyone is acting normal.
This ends with Jason starting a book club, and no, they do not meet up in civilian identities. Red Hood and Phantom are regularly seen at a bookstore chugging red bull with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Sometimes, they’re still covered in blood from the most recent livestream.
This not what Bruce meant when he said that Jason should socialize more.
Can you imagine if Vlad showed up one day? Not as a criminal or the rogue who kills the criminal, just completely of his own accord, right before the killing blow is dealt to whatever molester of the week is bleeding out on the floor.
The camera distorts for a bit before clearing up, and Danny, sounding only a little scared and a lot annoyed, "Oh shit." Because Vlad floats down from the ceiling and looks both proud of himself and irriated at whoever is behind the camera.
"So, this is what you've been up to." Harley is paused, staring wide-eyed at the vampire floating a few feet above her. The other rogues exit from their doors as well: Killer Croc and Scarecrow. The chat is exploding with confusion; everyone is wondering if this is part of the show. They very quickly realize it isn't when the Phantom Host speaks up, trying and failing to hide his fear behind displeasure.
"How in the Ancients did you fucking find me, Plasmius." The Phantom's tone made it sound like he didn't actually want to know.
The vampire, Plasmius, apparently, gave a very off-putting smile. "I have my ways. After all, if you love something, you let it go, and then it will find its way back to you one day. " No one liked that, especially not the Bats.
There was a growl that sounded from behind the camera, the lens started to frost a bit, and ice spread into view over the walls and floor. The Phantom's voice picked up static, and his natural echo seemed more prevalent. "Love is the wrong word for you to use. I'm not even sure you can feel emotions like that despite how much you preach about your maturity and grace."
Plasmius scoffed; thinly veiled rage shimmered on his face before he smoothed it back into smug self-assurance. "Of course, you are your father's son after all." Another growl, the ice spread further. Plasmius didn't stop, though. "And speaking of love and grace," He clasped his hands together, forcing a cheery attitude. "Where is dear Danielle? I've been dying to see her."
The person who's been behind the camera since this show aired leaped from behind it and tackled Plasmius. A fistfight broke out between the two, and it didn't seem like it was gonna stop anytime soon. The chat stalled as everyone watching took a moment to realize the person who had set up this game show to punish rapists and child molesters...was a child. He looked barely 16, all gangly limbs and cheeks rounded with baby fat and big, toxic green eyes. And he looked fucking pissed.
Though it's pretty easy to say that no one and everyone expected the following conversation, if it could be called that.
"You are never going to touch her again! You're never gonna see her again! She's not going back to you if I have anything to say about it!"
"Come now, Daniel, you're being ridiculous. She's my daughter as well, in case you've forgotten. And do you really think you can protect her in a city like this? This city hates children, and you're practically a streetwalker. Be reasonable. Danielle needs a home with-"
Phantom cut him off, his anger growing like the icicles hanging from the ceiling. "You call that place a home?! You only want to use us for your own gain! I'm not bringing her anywhere with you! Ancients know what you'd do to her!"
Plasmius didn't even respond, his rage clear in every part of his body language before he pulled some device from his cape, spookily similar to how Batman does.
The last thing the camera saw was a bright flash as electricity coursed from the device into Phantom's side, and the last thing anyone heard before the stream cut was the haunting, echoing scream Phantom let out, the building shaking with the force of it and the camera exploding from the inside out.
Bruce: Yes. His name is Clark Kent. He can be trusted.
Danny: Okay. *Writes note down* What about the woman next to him?
Bruce: That's Cat Grant, and no, she can't be trusted. Everything you say to her will turn into a gossip-lifting, life-ruining article.
Danny: Got it. *writes more notes*
Jason, watching the two from a few feet away: Say, who's that kid Bruce is media training? Is he a new ward he took in?
Tim: No, that's Danny Fenton, the face of Fenton Works. They signed up as a sub-company of Wayne Enterprise. Originally, they were a paranormal investigation and capture company- yes, I mean ghost hunters- but it was discovered that almost all thier tech can be used on metas. Bruce wants to make medical equipment that can be used by our enhanced citizens.
Jason: I see. But why a kid so young? He's your age, right?
Tim: Hmm, apparently his parents, the owners of Fenton Works, made him CEO so they could focus on ghost hunting and the occasional meta medical machines for Bruce. He got here a week ago to shadow me for CEO training, and Bruce stole him after they met outside my office. Danny hangs onto his every word, and I think Bruce forgot what it was like to have a kid actually listen to him.
Jason: Ah thats makes sense. What do you think of him?
Tim: Well, he's a little naive, easy to trick, and has way too much empathy for the cold world of business. I'm gonna have him in my bed.
Jason: Ah....well that took a turn. One I do not like so I'm gonna....*walks away*
Tim: He will be ✨️mine✨️
Bruce overhears everything from the bugs he planted on his kids: Danny, go ahead and change Tim's status. He can not be trusted.
To be fair, from a purely business perspective Bruce is cool. For a mentor.
Remarkably competent (because he wouldn't hide that from a "student" the way he does from the wider public) and unusually chill. Most are one or the other. By now he has a LOT of experience explaining things to all sorts of people, so he's good at it and adaptable.
Yeah he started out inheriting a LOT but he also tries very very hard to do well by ALL employees AND the city AND give away as much as possible, he just has to do it via setting up his own damned charities because Gotham was corrupt as sin and its the only way to make sure at least most of the money actually does what its meant to.
And both Gotham and a lot of the world love him for it, so he never goes bankrupt despite his mega charities. (In most continuities.)
...Also it is VERY difficult to be quite as embarrassing a mentor as the Drs Fenton are as parents, so. Danny has a very different threshold for Cringe. XD
Danny hanging out with Bruce has the added benefit of pissing Vlad all the way off. Vlad had never cared for Bruce and as he was too high profile had not targeted him to steal from.
And now this fool has Danny learning all about running a successful company with the boy hanging off his every word!
As for Tim, Danny can smell the possible Fruitloop on him and as soon as Bruce said Tim was not to be trusted anymore it was going to be near impossible to change Danny's mind. Honestly Tim will likely need to do his research and prove to Jazz, Sam, and Tucker (decending in order of how difficult it wold be) that he had only good intentions with Danny. Ellie and Dan are unknown to him and will truly be the worst as they won't have a Vlad-like dating Danny.
Danny zips around the massive dark aquarium with a net carefully snatching up all sorts of colourful marine life before going up and gently depositing them in smaller tanks that Sam prepared.
"You do realise this is extremely illegal, right?"
"Taking these poor endangered fish from their homes is extremely illegal. We're righting a wrong here Danny, and you still owe me one"
Danny sighs and goes back down but keeps talking.
"I just don't want to be accused of stealing again"
"Tucker got us covered, we'll be fine. You just keep fishing Danny, I think we're almost done. "
Danny carefully goes through the dark depths of the aquarium again and it's then that he sees a much bigger shape dart away from him.
Sam said this entire thing was filled with poached endangered marine wildlife so everything in it needs to be retrieved. Aka, Danny goes in pursuit.
It takes some doing but eventually Danny gets a hold of it and it's worryingly little girl shaped.
He holds the little girl in front of him and just kinda looks for a second at this squirmy child that can apparently breathe underwater.
"Sam! Sam, holy Fffffffuudge"
"What!? What??"
"There is a baby in the aquarium!" He holds up the squealing little red head who has apparently decided what's happening now is funny actually.
"A baby!?"
"In the aquarium!" He points down at the water.
"Why is there a baby in the aquarium!!?"
"How am I supposed to know?! Maybe these weirdos accidentally fished up one of Aquaman's people?"
"Oh my god, we need to bring her back!"
"How the ff-frick-" the little girl giggles and goes, "Fik!" Making Danny wince, "-are we supposed to do that, I don't know where Atlantis is at Sam"
"Call the justice league?"
"Didn't they disband again not too long ago?"
"... shit, you're right"
Danny rushes to cover the little girls ears while hissing, "language" and Sam slaps a hand over her mouth.
"Sorry..."
Danny floats in a circle above the water bouncing the child who seems fascinated with his glowing white hair, "Okay, okay, here's an idea. Jazz has her drivers license. We'll do an impromptu road trip to the east coast"
"... yeah, sounds good, let's go"
Sam holds the little girl as Danny stacks up all the tanks filled with fish and they quickly leave the premises.
"Can I just say I love you hair little miss, Naturally dark red? if only I was that lucky."
The now empty tank is surrounded by a gaggle of awkwardly shifting henchmen.
"So who is gonna tell the boss we lost the princess?"
So far the road trip has been incredibly educational.
The gang has learned what a one year old eats, and how to change diapers.
They've also learned that there are a bunch of crazies out there that want to steal a baby atlantean.
By now Jazz has fought a guy who called himself Black Manta in the new and improved Fenton exoskeleton. That battle involved a lot of lazers going in various directions.
"I thought Aquaman was an idiot to entrust her protection to a group of teenagers. But I'm starting to see his logic. You lot prepare yourselves, next time it won't be so easy"
And he'd been gone before they could correct his assumptions.
Then there was the swamp witch that Sam Out magicked with her own plant abilities.
"Curse you children, that royal blood will be mine!"
"Is she talking about me?"
"I really doubt it Tuck..."
Now they've finally reached the east coast and some big crustacean looking guy got sand guardianed by Tucker. Aka he's stuck up to his neck in the sand of the beach.
"You're only delaying the inevitable! Ocean master will have the child!"
The group just looks at him rather annoyed.
Great, that means some other asshole is going to show up any moment now.
The up side to it all is that the little girl seems to love all the action. It would have really sucked if they had to soothe a crying child every time a fight happened.
So now that they have reached the east coast the next step would be to…
…
“Anyone any ideas about how we’re gonna find a legendary underwater city to bring the little girl back to her parents?” Sam asks while checking over the fish tanks in the back of their vehicle.
“This would have been so much easier if we could contact Aquaman directly somehow… do they have wifi underwater?” Tucker frowns at his PDA, “do they need social media down there?”
“Careful Tuck, I’ve read that Aquaman gets agitated at those kinds of questions,” Danny carefully lets the little girl play with the sand, making sure not to take his eyes off her after Jazz harshly told him to make sure to not let her eat any of it.
“Babies will put anything in their mouths Danny, be careful!”
Jazz reappears after locking the vehicle down, that thing isn’t going anywhere, not with the anti-ghost defenses active. they are also quite good against car robbers.
“So no brilliant ideas on how to get her back to her parents just yet?”
“It’s really annoying how we keep coming across or getting tracked down by weirdo’s and we still have no idea how to reach her parents…”
Jazz holds her hands out to Danny who hands the girl over to his sister.
“Okay, in that case-”Starts Sam, “we’ll just load all these fish onto the Manson family yacht that’s docked a little over there, and we focus on getting the fish home first.”
“Maybe a helpful atlantean will come to see what we’re doing and we can ask for directions.”
The group agrees to this plan of action and gets to work.
Meanwhile Arthur has a confrontation of his own with Black Manta who is clearly not at his full strength.
his helmet is rather… busted.
“So those brats have notified you of my attack.”
"...Brats?"
“The group of meta teens that you recruited to be your daughter’s personal little protection squad.”
Arthur opens his mouth to say something along the lines of “what the hell are you talking about” before thinking the better of it.
“I’ll admit that their combat ability caught me off guard, but that trick will only work once Aquaman.”
Arthur thinks for a bit before settling on a ‘neutral’ viciously growled, “Leave my daughter alone”
Later he shares this new precious bit of info with Mera, “good news, our little girl is being protected by a group of well meaning kids who apparently can hold off Manta at least long enough to escape,” he remembers the fucked up helmet, “and deal some decent damage in the process.”
“And the bad news,” Mera asks while pacing.
“I have absolutely no idea where they went. And Manta knows about several young heroes through Tempest and Aqualad… so these teens are most likely complete unknowns.”
Mera hisses in frustration, “I want my little seastar back.”
“We’ll find her.”
Both parents are very grateful for the fact that they now know that their little Andrina is alive and safer than previously thought, they can take a little bit of comfort in that.
"Buba!" the girl's little nickname for him was cute, but mostly a call for immediate attention.
Danny made another ice ball.
It was the only thing that was currently stopping the child from crying. She was ill, with something, likely a human thing too, but they didn't know what it was, and Frostbite hadn't been able to get them quick results, they had tried letting ehr slash around, keeping her diet well roudned.
but she was sick, and there was no getting around that.
so hey started shift, Jazz's singing lasted abotu an hour before she got fussy again, Sam and Tucker had, combined, lasted all fo twenty minutes.
Danny was still gong strong at three hours.
"Can't we just call the Justice League?" he muttered, watching their charge suck on the mini globe of ice.
________________________________________________
"My king, my queen!"
"Aqualad, why did you call us?"
"I believe we may have information on the whereabouts of the princess."
that caught their attention.
"Where?" Mera hissed.
"Well, there is satalite footage of Black Manta fighting some-sort of exo-suit in this area of the east coast." he stood in fornt of a screen manned by Red-Robin, who was reveiwing footage while looking utterly exhausted,Authur didn't undersatnd how Bruce could work his childrne this hard, or place expectation on them that made them work this hard, but he wasn't one to judge. Aqualad continued" we managed to find a part of the footage where the vehicle is in veiw. Red's been tracking it-"
"Somewhere on North Carolina's coast."
"...they are somewhere in North Carolina."
"thank you Red Robin."
"no prob."
Perhaps Authur owed that boy some coffee beans again. Maybe from Columbia....
Danny was struggling how was this child so... feisty. He was honestly getting tired from the overuse of his powers, so far he had kept her preoccupied for 6 hours before she fell asleep. He's tried calling Dani but she was 'busy in Korea.' When he asked which Korea she only said 'there's more than one?-' before her line went dead. And now he's tired. He didn't even want to call Vlad. Dan was off doing 'something'.
"Are we there yet?" Danny said already regretting speaking. He was still healing from the recent fight against the Ocean man guy combined with his extended use of his powers and he was drained.
"We should go south!" Sam protested cradling the now sleeping atlantian in her arms. "Are you serious Gotham is just a few states away!" Tucker said on his new mobile phone after his PDA died on him again.
This was going on for three hours now after the Mason yacht was blown up. Jazz wasn't much help and the child's sickness was getting worse. Heck they didn't have the money to bring her to the hospital and what would they say? 'Hey we found Aquamans child and the child is sick and we don't know what to do?' Yeah not the best option.
"Ok!" Danny said breaking the tension and most likely a rib. "Ok we are all currently in... very deep horse dung right now but we can't fight like this. Yes there are people after us. Yes we aren't at Atlantis. Yes we aren't that good at taking care of kids but we can't just allow all of that to cloud our reasoning."
Sam and Tucker calming down just looked defeated. Out of all of them Danny somehow suffered the most damage from the most recent fight. And Danny as of most days like these was right. The air once filled anger seemed almost depressing.
Sighing Danny turns to Tucker. "What's the lastest news story?" Tucker closes the map and opens up the news app. "Let's see uh lot's of stories... Uh oh. oh crap-" "Language." Danny hissed. "Sorry, but the news about the Justice League disbandment pretty old news appearently also apparently temporary... And looks like our digital foot print wasn't very discreet." "What do you mean 'temporary'? "
-------------------------------
Arthur was at his wits end how was four teens and a baby that hard to locate? He knew that surface searching wasn't like under water searching, his people had no real jurisdiction on land. But the Justice League had all hands on deck for this thing. And they were still spread thin as it is.
"I went to the last place the 5 were seen." Aqualad said coming in exhausted. "The local residents testimonies should help with finding her. " "Put... put it on screen."
The data did not lie the 5 were heading towards Atlantis just they were constantly getting stopped by villains who were trying to get his daughter.
"The data suggests they're heading south." Red Robin says sipping on his latest cappuccino. "No, they are going north." Aquaman says flatly. "He's right the latest finding suggests-" Aqualad says pulling a photo on screen. "They tried just GOING to Atlantis. But there's a destroyed boat in their way." "Not the right time for jokes dude."
---------------------
"Dude what flight goes to Atlantis?" Danny asks "Malaysia flight 370 if I remember correctly. " Tucker said before Danny smacked him upside the head. "I saw the meme Tuc not funny people died."
"Alright, let's head to Metropolis that's Superman's territory he might be able to help. In order to do that we need to head north. I'll drive." Danny said taking the Drivers seat. "Danny do you even know how to drive?" Sam responded. "I had to learn to drive the FGHFRV this isn't much different."
"Danny said he knew how to drive..." Tucker moans as he uses his power over sand to get the mud off of him while helping Sam with subduing the people currently attacking them.
"In his defense, the gigantic water hand out of the lake caught us all off guard..."
Jazz in her ecto suit is surrounded by the ones she's taken out, currently holding up the one in charge, "you better start taking or I'll keep swinging."
She's giving him her best 'I'm disappointed in you' face.
The guy himself however is looking like he's about to throw up any moment now. Probably from all the swinging around she's already done to him.
"I'm simply following orders..."
"That's not good enough." She holds him up a little higher and the guy starts scrabbling at her armor clad arm.
"They say- they said, the one who controls the princess controls the king and the one who controls the king... Its- listen, listen just- please put me down."
Parts of the lake are frozen and even though that makes for a strange sight overall the lake itself now seems deceptively peaceful. That's until about five other men get thrown out of the water and land painfully onto land after which a rather angry looking Danny wades through the water and gradually walks onto the shore.
With of course a happily giggling little girl in on his arm.
Tucker turns to him and asks, "What took you so long?"
"She's great at hide and seek, and there was a lot of kicked up muck down there helping her out."
Sam grins, she remembers what a hassle it was to get her out of the aquarium in the first place, "She looks better." Sam notes.
"It might be that Aqualady over here just needs to be in water more..." Danny sheepishly runs a hand through his hair.
"That would explain why we initially found her in the aquarium."
Their relaxed musing is interrupted by a shout.
"What are you doing! you traitor! Are you betraying your own kind and actually giving in to this land dweller's demands!?"
"I would like my insides to remain inside!"
The other rogue Atlantean gets up enough to throw some kind of crystal at Jazz. The others react instantly and jump to push her out of the way while she's still holding the other guy.
In a flash of light all of them vanish.
"You stupid idiot, now the princess is gone too!"
"Well at least I-"
A sudden rustling is followed by a green bloodhound running out of the bushes, he sniffs the air before saying, "Oh c'mon, You have got to be kidding me..."
Next thing the rogue Atlanteans know several other titans emerge out of the bush, some more elegantly than others.
Raven closes her eyes in concentration, "I sense traces of teleportation magic."
"Yeah they were here literally a second ago, the scent I was following just vanished." Gar keeps snuffling around over the ground until he's at the exact spot team Phantom just stood.
"Where are they," growls Tempest while Nightwing has a hand on his chest.
Meanwhile Donna and Starfire lift the busted car out of the lake.
"I bet our lord is absolutely losing it by now isn't he," is the only sneering reply he gets though.
Dick has to use a lot more force to keep Garth back and he looks over at Donna who is already running their way.
Roy mutters to Gar, "does he want to have his teeth kicked in orrr...?"
Gar shifts into a bear, shrugs, and makes a 'idunno' noise.
He'll gladly help Garth with the kicking though.
"I can trace the magic, Tempest." Raven's hands start glowing. And Garth finally let's himself get pushed back by his teammates muttering a soft apology to them that's tinged with frustration.
Dick takes him aside, "Garth I don't want to do this, but if you can't keep your head cool-"
"No, I'm fine, just," he pinches the bridge of his nose, "they were so close, that's all, I'm..." a long exhale.
"Raven is tracing them, we'll know soon. Take a moment, we'll handle these idiots."
Sam glares at the rogue Atlantean (who is sweating bullets while sitting on the ground.) And bounces little Andrina in her arms.
Jazz is a little off to the side calling her parents "Hey mom, dad, uhm.. just wondering, how much pressure can the Fenton ecto-exo-skeleton handle? ... yeah- like water pressure... uhuh, oh okay, hm? Oh, no, just curious you know, no reason. Hmhm... Danny is with his friends right now so he can't come to the phone, sorry. I'll tell him to call you guys back later, yeah. Okay. Love you too bye."
She hangs up and walks to Danny who is busy freezing a layer of impenetrable ice outside of his ecto shield bubble.
Right now the bubble is the only thing keeping them from drowning and getting crushed under an ungodly amount of water.
"Mom told me that their trip got extended, so I guess that's something we won't have to worry about for a while longer. You doing okay Danny?"
"Yeah, don't worry, I'm just thinking about how I'm gonna get you guys out of here safely..."
"Well, I'll be fine in the suit apparently, it's made so I can bust ghosts even down in the marina trench." She says mimicking their dad's enthusiasm.
"What."
"Let's not think about it too hard."
Danny pauses anyway and then says, "...Seas' haunted"
Jazz does a fake gasp, "The Flying Dutchman."
"I'll get you Davy Jones!"
Tucker is busy fiddling with his phone in the meantime, "Okay so I'm done trying to triangulate exactly where we are on my phone and... we are very, very deep."
"Yeah no kidding, I could have told you that... but where deep." Sam sets the little girl down who finds the nearest sandy puddle to splash in.
"That's harder to say..." Tucker's phone simply can't get a good signal from any satellite for that kind of stuff what with them being this deep, and he wouldn't be surprised if more magical stuff is messing things up as well.
The little girl holds a handful of watery sea sand near Tucker and the water just quickly glides out of it leaving desert dry sand in her hands instead, she giggles.
"Maybe our new friend can shed some light?"
Their 'new friend' would much rather just stay ignored.
His eyes glide over the four teens, fully aware what they are capable of now.
Sea plants are already curling around Sam's ankles unprompted, a good chunk of Jazz's suit is still keeping her protected and he's seen how smoothly and quickly the rest of it can latch back on to her again. Water seems to recoil from Tucker as more and more bone dry sand surrounds him and the impromptu ice dome is handling incredible amounts of water pressure without so much as a groan or a creak.
Yeah he knows he's out of his league here, the princess is incredibly well protected, as expected from their king really. He should have known better, they all should've.
"We're somewhere between the city Tritonis and Xebel."
Suddenly Andy gets fussy and for a moment the guy thinks he's fucked up until Jazz picks the little girl up and takes a little pot of mashed fruit for babies out of her bag.
"So that's not really as helpful as you might think it is, appreciate the clear answers though, Go on," Sam urges.
In the background Tucker goes, "so there are like a bunch of cities down here then?" to which Danny responds with a, "Not now Tuck."
"Uh, this was meant as a pick up point, get the princess and-"
"No you misunderstand, what I meant-"
"Sam I think he's been living his entire life underwater, he might not know the names we use for parts of the oceans."
"…hrm, maybe a map would help, Tucker can you pull up a map on your phone?"
Before they can put that plan into action however the icy walls around them rumbles as something latches onto the it, a something that looks like a big mechanical manta ray.
It starts drilling into the ice wall with what appears to be some kind of laser powered apparatus.
Now Danny probably could just reinforce his ice and just not let them through… However~
He grins, "guys, I think our new ride just arrived." The others of team Phantom also get a dangerous look in their eyes and the Atlantean guy knows enough to shuffle backwards until he's pressed on the other side of the dome in hopes of avoided most of what is about to come.
#the wacky journey continues #now reaching new depths! #Team Phantom is gonna take the Atlantean ship. ditch that one guy and keep going #Tucker is gonna drive this time ;p #meanwhile Garth is understandably upset #it's a good thing he has his friends with him
I know it's a massive cliche. But how likely is it that Black Manta's sub would have Aquaman's number saved. For gloating and threatening reasons.
Tuck is fucking about with the buttons after they kicked the bastard out of his own ship. Clicks this one button and suddenly he has an angry Aquaman on the screen. Who stops and stares in confusion. Danny and Sam shove Tucker to one side so they can show off the baby.
Mera and Arthur just slumpmfor a moment. Their baby is ok. They now know exactly what to track to find her and these heroic teens. They can take their baby home soon. Hopefully without any other ambushes happening between the meet up.
Sam lights up, random thug they captured said where they were! Somewhere the royals will know!
Not really, but everyone is convinced he is. He arrived at crime alley around the same time the red hood appeared, he's strong, gets along with the night girls, often gets involved in fights to protect others, and is completely unbothered by death. What really sell it was when someone finally saw him shoot a gun, the guy has a terrific aim.
Sure, no one has seen him take a life, but that's what the vigilantes shit is for, right? So everyone knows this young man is Red Hood, but that's okay, crime alley is good keeping secrets from outsiders.
Danny has no idea everyone thinks this, and is unsure why he has so many hit man's behind his head. He can't even blame this on his ghost side, this men only use human weapons! This is his Fenton luck again, isn't it?
Jason is really interested in meeting who is apparently his civilian ID. Also, kind of worrying to have a civilian carrying his name, seems like a quick way to get the guy kill. Then again, the guy seems to have survived pretty well so far.
Okay, but this implies Jason has been looking for his civilian identity for a while, and keeps getting rumors about him, but somehow isn't able to meet the guy! How does everyone in this neighborhood know this guy except him!?
#This has been going for 3 years now#Jason has reconcile with his family and everything#And it's just now finding this out#Why? Well. You're not telling the red hood you know his ID. Are you?#But Jason is starting to use his civilian ID again for more than just grocery shopping and is learning the neighborhood gossip#Danny keeps receiving tidbits about random shit during casual conversation#He always confusedly talks about it with the guy that lives next door#Said guy works for Red Hood#And Has no idea why his boss puts all this effort on playing broken telephone to make it look like the information is getting in organicall#No one would question if he just brought it up himself#But well. He'll let his boss keep the illusion that he has a secret ID.
It's been going on for 3 years but Jason only just found out now that he's going into the Alley as himself.
Hilariously, Danny ALSO is just finding out (maybe figuring out?) what's going on. Like, people have been vaguely alluding to him being the Red Hood for the past 3 years, but because Danny hasn't been keeping up with the Gotham vigilante scene he straight up Did Not Get Those References until something happened...dealer's choice: he (finally) mentions it to Sam, #1 Poison Ivy Stan, who knows about other Gotham vigilantes/rogues by proxy and explains it. Or maybe his Neighbor the RH Goon lets something slip (very wink wink, nudge nudge type of slip, like "did you see the paper today? VERY interesting article amirite?")
Or, for maximum lolz, he MEETS RED HOOD one night at random - well, probably not 'meets', more like sees him vigilante-ing and is like "oooh I get it now".
Upon figuring it out he immediately switches from 'baffled response that people think is him poorly playing innocent' to 'staunch denial that people think is him VERY POORLY playing innocent'.
Meanwhile, through hi-jinks and casual blink and you miss it fate-driven shenanigans, Jason keeps JUST missing Danny. Like, he's casually discussing his supposed doppelganger on the phone and misses Danny denying he's RH in the background. They're both grocery shopping but one goes into the next aisle when the other is just starting on the last one they were in, Jason gets pulled into a conversation at the deli and misses Danny checking out (and once again awkwardly laughing off a reference to his 'nightlife').
OBVIOUSLY they finally meet because they both stumble across the same mugging (or what have you) and they do the 'multiple Spider-men pointing at each other' meme.
Tim: I get attached too easily. I fall into obsessions quickly. I hero worship to the point of worry. Oh, and I get Hangry.
Danny: I meant the character flaws you put for the assignment.....
Tim: Patricide.
Danny: Alright thanks. I'll ugh, see you around?
Tim: You won't see me but I'll see you. Through my camera lens.
Danny: What?!
Tim: Don't act surprised. I just told you my flaws.
Danny: I thought you were just being edgy!?
Tim: *frog blinks* Why would I waste this chance to speak to *whispers* Phantom.
Danny: How do you know that!?
Tim: I used to follow Batman and Robin around before Robin died, and you popped up. Good thing you did, too, because Batman was going crazy. You really saved him from the void. I love you. Also, I think someone put something in my water bottle because I'm shaking and saying things I usually wouldn't be saying and-
Danny: *Grabs bottle to sniff* someone dumped a truth serum in here. Let's go ahead and get you to the cave.
Tim: You can smell that? Of course, you can; you're half ghost, which could be considered its own species since all senses are enhanced. Plus, some ghosts are born in the Infinite Realm, which means reproduction is possible between-
Danny: Let's play the quiet game
Tim: Oh! I'm really good at that game. I never made any sounds when following the Gotham Heros around! Five years and counting!
Danny: You were nine when you started following Bruce around!?
Tim: I'm a smart stalker. But shhhhhhh, it's quiet time.
Batman drops Tim off with Bruce Wayne - at least that's the stroy that's told to Gordon because the Drakes are out of the country and unreachable. The arrangement with Mrs. Mac is deemed insufficient so Gordon sighs and asks the social worker assigned whether it'll be alright to direct Tim to the Wayne household. (Protection, similar social circles, obvious disinterest and lack of interest conflict given the truth serum was a targeted attack) Once the overworked social worker says yes, they get Tim situated at Wayne Manor.
Three days later, the Drakes are kidnapped and being ransomed. Danny flies out as Phantom to help them with Batman following in his plane. Tim stays home with Alfred and while browsing the internet (which he'd hooked into the Bat servers instead of the regular ones) notices a weird pattern of stalking. Tim, being familiar with stalking people given his own history, frowns and starts making notes on what he finds.

Dick in tears: About two days. We were so worried-
Bruce: Where's Tim?
Jason: It's alright Bruce. You both made it out fine. He wasn't hurt at all.
Bruce: No. Where is Tim!? Where is he?!
Damian: Father calm down. Drake is-
Bruce: You don't understand! You all let Tim out of your sight! On the most dangerous night of the year!
Dick: What?
Bruce: If I was out for two days then tonight the stars align. Tim is going to summon the Ghost King!
Jason: Why would he summon one of the most dangerous and evil being in the multiverse B?
Bruce: Because he's crazy! The only thing keeping Tim's mental state together was his obsession with Batman! But his obsession with the Ghost King is much greater! We have to find him!
Dick: B, please calm down. You were out for two days. Let us worry about Tim.
Damian: I found Drake. He's in the backyard.
Dick: See? Everything is fine. Tim isnt summoning anything.
Damian: Richard, stop spreading falsehoods. Look at the surveillance.
Tim in the backyard:
Bruce leaping out bed: We have to stop him! I can not have the Ghost king as a son in law!
Jason: Wait, he's trying to summon the King to date him!?
Tim drake develops a habit of laughing whenever he gets hit or is in pain ever since Junior Joker happened. The origin of this habit is only known by Bruce, Barbara, Alfred and some Rougues
Dick: *Throws Tim over his shoulder and onto the training mat*
Tim: *Laughs*
Dick: Um... You okay there baby bird?
Tim, still laughing: Yeah, it *giggles* it hurtss. I think I pulled a musc - *snickers* muscle
Tim, who just tripped on a roof tile and slammed his head: *giggles* Oww *rubs his head* Haha... Ouch
Jason: Wow uh... You okay there?
Tim: Yeah, it's just *giggles* kinda funny I slipped on a s-stealth *chokes on a laugh* mission
Jason:
Jason:
Damian: Is Drake a sadist?
Thing is, it's one thing that this habit is highkey creepy especially when his laughter is the only sound echoing in the BatCave after a rough patrol. Bruce seems to tense whenever he wraps Tim's wounds and Red Robin is literally burying his face in a pillow, crying of laughter.
Oh, but then you get to the criminals.
Henchman, weilding a metal bat: Hah! Got em in the head
Tim, hand pressed against his bleeding forehead, a manic smile on his face as his shoulders shake with soft chuckles: Ha... Haha
Henchman: What...
Tim, leaning back, on full body laughter, his other hand twirling his Bo Staff: hahaHAHAHAHAHAH
Silly little Dead Silent idea where Cass, as Black Bat is just finishing up patrol with the others when she suddenly finds herself overcome by strange yet for some reason familiar instincts.
Those instincts have her taking off to follow an invisible trail only she can sense, eventually leading her to what appears to be a glowing meta boy.
Black Bat doesn't even think, just immediately goes into attack mode and proceeds to beat the "meta" boy into submission, the guy retaliating just as fiercely.
The only reason the rest of the Bat clan aren't stepping in is because Red Hood, having a weird feeling he knows what's happening says not to interfere.
It all becomes clear once Black Bat successfully gets the glowing guy down, then proceeds to pick the now docile "meta" up and carry him in her arms in a rather possessive manner.
The only explanation the Bat clan gets from her is "Mine now."
Danny's life imploded - Bad Reveal or everyone he loves died, take your pic - and in throws of grief, someone tried to put their will on Danny. Could've been the Observers trying to make him a puppet king, could've been Vlad trying to gain control custody of him, could've been the GIW trying to capture the Ghost Boy. In any case, Danny had no desire to let them win but he had no will (or strength) to fight. So, he ran into the Infinite Realms and got lost. He has no idea how long he stayed there, but as time went on, he slowly started acting more like a ghost. His humanity started slipping. It was easier this way, letting his human thoughts go fuzzy and putting his ghostly instincts in the driver seat.
At some point in time, he slipped through a natural portal. Without thinking, he reformed his feet and stood on solid ground for the first time in forever. His senses told him right away that he wasn't in the Realms any more but he had no idea where he was. Not anywhere he recognized in the slightest, like the whole world was different. But that could've just been in his disorientation. He was starting to feel nervous and itchy - he had to do something. He was just about to run off when something mysterious dropped from the roofs and attacked him.
He fought back just as hard as this new person but he recognized that this wasn't a fight to the death. There was nothing to be gained but greeting and sizing each other up. As such, he didn't put his full strength in it. He wanted to show off that he was just as skilled as this other being. In the end, he wasn't. He lost but as he was being carried off by this person who just radiated safe/protect, he thought it wasn't a bad thing.
Danny woke up the next morning with his first coherent thought since he ran away: I'm hungry
When was the last time he had eaten? When was the last time he had been in his human form? Looking up from the shoulder his face was pressed into, he saw himself in the mirror in the corner of the room. He wasn't deathly skinny - maybe a bit paler than normal with bruises from the half-remembered fights. It seems the Infinite Realms took care of both sides of him or his human side was dormant while in ghost form? Eh, too much theorizing, not enough evidence. Instead of wrapping his still fuzzy mind around the existential questions of an eldritch location, Danny decided to snuggle into the body he was wrapped around, nuzzling his face into the crook of the neck -
Only for his eyes shoot open and his whole body tense. He would have flung himself off in panic if the limbs of the other person didn't immediately hold him place, a hand going to the back of his head to keep his face pressed into her shoulder.
"You're safe," a voice next to his ear whispered.
And he believed her. Danny didn't really know this person, although his memory from last night was clearing up and he realized that it was she who gave him these bruises. He took a calming breath, taking in her scent, and waited for the adrenaline to leave his body.
As he drifted back off to sleep, he heard her very softly, with such love, say, "Mine."
Danny Phantom, who as far as the Justice League knew was a normal ghost, was presenting a pointpoint in front of the rest of the League. The presentation says, "Why I should be allowed to bite criminals: 1, because I am not human and cannot catch any of your filthy human diseases. 2, because it would allow us to compile DNA samples from the criminals of the world to compare with during crime scene investigation. 3, Fuck you."
That second point yanked Batman instantly and unwillingly by the throat to Phantom's side.
He couldn't speak out knowing the rest of the League wouldn't approve, so he let the discussion run its course, and Phantom was naturally denied.
But Batman is nothing if not thorough, and compiling DNA profiles would also help with contingencies. So Batman discretely reaches out after the meeting to give Phantom his personal permission as long as he provides the DNA samples and that Phantom understands that Batman cannot publicly defend him, but he will mitigate the consequences behind the scenes.
After another biting incident when Phantom is getting lectured by Superman:
"Phantom, you can't keep doing this. This is your last warning. Criminals or not, it's never okay to bite people just because you want to. Control yourself, or you might have to rethink your place in the Justice League."
Phantom staring at his feet and genuinely worried that he might get kicked out. He didn't think it was that big a deal.
Batman walks up and simply states. "He is controlling himself."
"Batman, you call that control? I'm trying to be understanding, but Phantom is biting criminals more than ever."
"Are they still breathing?"
"I don't see how-"
"Are their limbs still attached?"
"What are you-?"
Batman gives Superman a hard look to stop him mid question. "Acording to Constantine, ghosts from the Infinite Realms are creatures that should be avoided at all costs due to their extremely volatile nature. Generally, it's a death sentence to ever encounter one."
Superman turned to the child he'd been scolding, shocked that any of that could possibly be true about his colleague. The same colleague, who was so gentle he almost cried when he accidently killed a spider in the dining hall. "Is that true?"
Danny, glancing up but unable to meet Superman's eyes, "Yea-yeah. Intense violence is actually how most ghosts socialize. Regrowing limbs isn't a big deal for ghosts, so they tend to forget how fragile humans are."
Batman continues with his explanation, "In the Infinite Realms, ghosts have evolved to attack anything that moves as a defense due to how hostile the environment is. Everything from the plants to the very ground could attack at any moment. Their version of compassion is controlling their instincts before the killing blow. The fact that Phantom rarely attacks anybody is a testament to his constant and vigillent self-control."
Danny finally meets Superman's eyes and they are nothing but pools of liquid innocence and shame about his very being. "I'm sorry... I'm doing my best, but my ghost instincts are really hard to control, especially when emotions are high and we are carching bad guys, and I can't help but bite. But I promise, I will never let it go any farther than that."
Intense guilt washes over Superman. He knew how seriously Phantom took his promises. He had no idea he was asking Phantom to go against his very nature. Did Phantom have to hold himself back right now? Superman knew a thing or two about how scarily fragile human bodies were to someone like him. He couldn't imagine having instincts that screamed at him to attack anything that moved on top of that.
Batman turned to his old friend with a disapproving stare. "Maybe learn a thing or two before you judge our nonhuman members. I expected better from you."
Superman placed his hands on Phantom's shoulders. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea. Do the best you can. We can figure out the rest together. Please forget everything I said earlier."
Danny with hope sparking in his eyes, "Are you sure? I know im not perfect, but I want to stay. I really like it here, and I really like helping people."
"Of course. I'll let the others know." Superman walks away down the hall, and out of sight.
Danny grinned, lifted his eyebrows, and nodded toward where Superman ran off to convey his thanks for the save.
Batman gave a quick nod and a tiny, barely there smile of his own. He spoke aloud for the one with superhearing that was definitely still listening, "I apologize for any offense you may have taken. Know that the sentiments of Superman are not shared by the rest of us."
Danny pulled the zip lock baggie out of his pocket and silently handed it to Batman with a grin. It had a napkin smeared with the blood of Danny's most recent biting victim labeled in Sharpie. Danny responded in a wobbly voice that did not match his mischivous grin, "Thanks." He added a sniffle for effect. "I needed to hear that. I'm really doing the best I can, but i guess people dont see it that way."
After this incident, Superman became Danny's biggest defender against the bitting accusations.
Superman:Hey Danny the other day when you mentioned how much you're holding back, I know how that is the world feels too weak I'm constantly terrified of killing the villains we face. If you'd want we can spar sometimes. I'm unsure of how full out we can go but up in orbit, there is no collateral, and with just us fighting it'd be good training for when we have to stop pulling punches on bigger threats.
Danny:I'd love that! Fighting is so much more relaxing when I don't have to worry about turning a bugger into chunky salsa or have to watch me swings so I don't knock over a building.
Ok so I don't usually add prompts but I'm deep into dp/dc crossovers and had this silly idea.
See there's plenty of stories where Danny dies. He's a ghost so kinda comes with the territory. Usually dying for a half ghost kid is just kinda like a minor inconvenience or a good way to get out of an awkward villain monologue which is valid, me too. But here me out what if Danny can't die. Like not because of some cool ghost power or even being over power where nothing works but just cause of a technical. Like death and fate are so not dealing with the paper work it would take to kill Danny so instead they just awkwardly misses him every time.
Gotham is far from what most would call a safe place. Between the villain attacks, normal city crime, and just bad city management most citizens had at least one or two close calls. That's probably why it took so long for Danny to even be noticed. By all accounts he looked like any other student in faded jeans, An NASA hoodie and backpack held together with neon green duck tape. Sure sometimes his neighbor saw him talk to himself and Jimmy from his class swore he saw the kid drink some neon green sludge once but it's Gotham. So long as the kid kept his crazy to himself no one would have looked twice.
However the video that started tending last night that Oracle themself posted made it impossible not to look. The security footage was of a gas station the angle set up high, clearly a security camera, with a time stamp of 2 am. Not long after it starts a small moped pulls up to one of two pumps. Danny is his normal tired college kid outfit hopped off his scooter and began to pump. He barely started when another figure also stepped into frame unnoticed by Danny who was clearly playing on his phone.
At first it looked like just another would be robbery. The figure hunched over while creeping up on the oblivious kid. Then just as the robber steps up a knife glittering in the street light the man just trips on a wet spot on the ground left behind by someone's spilt slushy from the gas station. Danny for his part did turn around pulling out an ear bud but from his angle his own scooter hid the man who laid face down just on the other side.
Danny unbothered clearly put his ear bud back in turning back around and reaching to the little curtsying cleaning Squeegee. The guy was quick to get up, knife gripped ready to go again when Danny moved first. Clearly having no idea anyone would be in swinging distance Danny whips the small Squeegee out of its holder like it excalibur before wildly swinging it like a sword. His movements not only cause him to send the thug's knife flying off but despite the grain quality of the video it becomes clear the liquid from the cleaning solution sprays the thug in the face. The man for his part who had already staring open mouth due to his lost knife that was sent flying up from his grasp is quick to throw his hands out, clearly trying to wipe his eyes from the neon blue liquid in them. His blind footing was perfectly timed to Danny's imaginary sword fight to put him just out of Danny's eyesight on the other side of the pump when Danny does turn around. The next minute is Danny cleaning off his scooter's front head lamp while the poor wanna be thief is gagging just on the other side. Not long given the lack of actual windshield to properly need a Squeegee Danny is back to messing around now using the tool as a makeshift guitar. The goon now looking far more pissed and maybe a tad wary is back to standing up and clearly ready to try again. The man pauses for a moment reaching for his knife but when it is clear he doesn't see it he ready his fist instead. Stepping back just behind Danny, who looks to be finishing his solo, begins to pull back his fist. Then just as he goes to swing it Danny bows. The mugger who had used his whole body quickly loses his footing as Danny's bow has him dodging with perfect steps to miss the man who stumbles just to the opposite side. Trying to keep his balance his arms move wildly as his other lands into a small bucket next to the pump. It's at this moment the man knife decides to rejoin the party which in turn has the man performing almost like some kind of figure skater as he slides face first into the trash can at the other pump.
Danny at this moment seems to finally realize there are other people that exist and sees the man waist deep into the can. And of course being the kid he is does the most un-Gotham thing he could and pulls out a few dollar bills to put beside what he clearly assumes is a homeless man looking for food. After a few more moments Danny drives off leaving the man who has since pulled himself from the can sitting on the ground defeated. Red Robin shows up after a moment looking fairly confused as the mugger just holds there arms out for the cuffs.
The video cuts off but this quickly becomes the first in a long line of short clips of the luckiest guy in Gotham who just can't die.
---
Honestly I feel like this could be a lot of fun to just put Danny in some crazy spots with the local villains and have Batman and co just be confused as hell as this kid doesn't even need their help to stay out of danger.

After a few years of doing the whole vigilante thing, Danny gets bored of his quick and simple transformation act. He gets bored of doing the memes along with it as well — the 'I guess I'll die' was funny at first, but there's really only so many times it works.
The solution? He starts staging his own deaths. Throwing a toaster in the bathtub, comically falling down on a knife, slipping on a banana peal and hitting his head, all that jazz. He has his own list of preferred suicides, ranking from the quickest to slowest and from the least to most painful, and another one that goes from the least inconvenient method to most troublesome one. The first one on the latter is getting shot at. The last is getting suffocated in a swarm of bees so far.
His friends are long used to it — they are all Amity kids, honestly, their idea of humor is really twisted. They laugh their asses off when Danny attempts to strangle himself with one of those sour candy strips. They laugh even harder when he succeeds.
But then Danny moves for college and realizes that most people outside Amity Park don't think performed suicide is funny.
And, well.
Sucks to be them because Danny does not plan on stopping any time soon!
The absolute culmination of it comes one dark November evening, when the Fenton luck strikes again and Danny finds himself being a hostage is Joker's old as time performance: making Batman choose between saving Robin or saving a helpless civilian, both of them hanging over the tanks full of acid.
Only, midway through the madman's pathetic speech, they all get to see said civilian wake up, look around to realize what kind of situation he ended up in, and then excitedly say, "Sick, a jacuzzi!"
And happily, eagerly wiggle his way out of the ropes to fall in, screaming, "Cannonball!"
Danny is in Gotham for *insert generic reasons* He quickly discovers that red Hood is in fact a halfa like him. He also comes to the correct conclusion that Red Hood doesn't know he's a halfa yet.
Danny decides to help in a completely reasonable way....
By hiding away and making chirping noises at him from the shadows!
It's basically like
Danny from the rooftops: *chirp*
Red Hood: *chirps back* What the fuck!
It goes on like this for days! Red Hood is very confused because, baby ghostling??? Where is baby? He hears Danny's chirps and immediately his core latches on to him claiming Danny as his kid.
Danny doesn't know Jason basically parentally imprinted he just thinks it's funny how confused Red Hood gets when he does it. At least he thought it was funny until Red Hood started searching rather violently whenever he did it.
Danny leaves Gotham for *insert plot convenient reason* Jason is distraught and still very confused. He begins searching thoroughly through everything for even a hint of what happened to his kid.
When his family inevitably asks what the hell he's doing we get a scene like this
Imagine Jason sadly chirping into empty Alleyways, off rooftops, anywhere he'd heard Danny chirp from. Just waiting for his kid to respond. Does Jason think Danny died? Does he think that Danny was kidnapped? Jason doesn't know what happened to his kid and he's super pissed about it.
How well do the chirps travel? Whale songs can be heard miles away, so what if its the same for the chirps? But only among ghosts and liminals - like, the living can't hear it.
Danny still hears the chirps from Jason and responds, he just doesn't expect Jason to be using them like he's playing Marco Polo and find him while he's in class
#i couldn't stand keeping it saaadd!!#i offered a solution#danny phantom#dp#dp au#dp x dc#dc x dp#dpxdc#baby halfa jason#jason adopts danny#danny just doesnt know it yet#danny didnt realize that him chirping to jason was basically acknowledging him as an adoptive candidate#danny chirps: ghost? dad? be my dad?#jason chirps: child? baby? my baby?!#both are oblivious idiots#but they're our oblivious idiots
Loving this quite a lot actually.
Danny could figure out he can chirp by just. Being super stressed. Chirps into the void. It's not aimed at anything, it's just a distress noise.
But Danny doesn't have the full-ghost instincts to tell him what the chirping means. He just knows "oh hey I can chirp???" and starts chirping a bunch just to see how many different chirps he can make.
Just for funsies - it's a good distraction from the stress, at least, learning about something new that he can do. Even if it is kind of weird. (He doesn't make the connection between feeling stressed & chirping, he just thinks it randomly happened as his ghost powers tend to do).
Maybe Youngblood chirps at an ally during a fight & they chirp back and pop up to fight Danny together, so he thinks it's just a kind of "hey over here" noise.
So why is Danny in Gotham? Well, there's only a little summer vacation left. And he's kind of irritated that Amity Park is going on a year of being ignored by the JL. He literally had to fight Pariah Freakin' Dark. He though he was gonna die the rest of the way there.
Overall, Danny is not best pleased.
Batman is in charge of the JL from the public's perspective. So Danny, being upset about the lack of aid, decides to go snoop around Gotham. Maybe graffiti some insults.
Maybe change the bat signal to be a giant middle finger.
His parent's think he's with Tucker & Sam until the first day of school - a sort of "last hurrah" for the break.
Then he runs into Red Hood.
He's glaring balefully up at the smog filled night sky from the top of a fire escape when the icy gust sweeps out of Danny's throat, warning of an incoming halfa.
With time spent around Vlad (unfortunate) and Dani (better but sadly infrequent) he's come to notice a slightly different in how his ghost sense reacts to halfas vs full ghosts.
He figures he must have come across Dani on her travels and decides, hey, maybe they could vandalize the batsignal together.
So he chirps.
Out of the corner of his eye, Red Hood freezes in the alley below. The guy he was chasing doesn't stop, however.
There is no answering call, so Danny chirps again.
Danny goes invisible as Red Hood spins around. He thinks maybe he wasn't sensing Dani at all.
So he chirps again, louder and sharper.
And Red Hood's own chirp answers.
He'd tried chirping in lieu of whistling, once, to get Tucker's attention so he could throw him the thermos. Danny can't whistle without using his hands, and they'd kind of been occupied with angry ghost at the time. The discussion post-fight and a bit of testing proved that humans couldn't hear ghost chirps.
He literally did it as loud as possible during class once, and no one so much as blinked.
Red Hood not only heard, but replied.
Red Hood must be the halfa Danny sensed.
...
He floats down to a dead end alley just off the one Hood is in and chirps again, because why not.
Hood practically sprints into the alley, chirping back.
Seeing the guy run reminds Danny that he'd been chasing someone.
He kinda feels bad for distracting him, so he flies up and heads in the direction he last saw the guy go, giving the occasional chirp to keep Hood following.
He only saw the guy for a split second, but having to track down the occasional more-sneaky ghost has given him a habit of remembering key features. Between that and his bird's-eye view of things it only takes a few minutes to find the guy he'd been chasing. A few well-placed chirps aim him in a head-on run at the guy nearly at a corner.
Hood doesn't waste any time tackling the guy and Danny gives a final satisfied chirp before he bolts.
***
He knows he shouldn't find it as entertaining as it is to lead a bloody-thirsty crime lord around on essentially wild goose chases.
But it's fun.
Maybe it's the novelty of being the more experienced halfa for once. Or the novelty of him being the first halfa that didn't try to kill him the rest of the way the first time they met - albeit probably only because he can't see him to do so.
Besides, he is technically helping the guy.
A small bit of stalking observation made it incredibly clear that the guy has no idea that he's a halfa.
So.
Chirps.
Despite his reputation outside of Gotham, the people of crime alley love the guy - at least, the people in his haunt do.
And while blood thirsty is his most common descriptor, Danny thinks maybe it should be "smart."
The extensive territory maps he keeps and the intensive research Danny watched him do to track down a possible lead were...honestly all kind of over Danny's head.
He doesn't really wanna risk getting traced as Danny Fenton just because he talks and the guy somehow finds his voice???
Better paranoid than sorry, Danny thinks.
So, chirping it is. The guy is crazy smart enough Danny thinks he can figure out it's ghosts.
And once he comes to terms with the whole "I'm making ghost noises" thing maybe he'll ask Danny to talk. And Danny will be able to answer without worrying about being hunted down because by then Hood would be sure he's a ghost, and who in their right mind would try to track a ghost to where they live?
They wouldn't, of course, because ghosts don't "live."
Of course the whole "halfa" thing would change that, but by then Hood would know enough about the GIW and AEA to mind his business ala mutually-assured destruction.
Or maybe he'd just be friendly and mind his own business even without M.A.D. given how the people living in his haunt regard him.
Still, Danny isn't going to rely on a maybe when there's ripping apart molecule-by-molecule on the line, thanks.
And okay maybe he's really just trying to justify distracting a crime lord with ghosty marco-polo but it's fun.
***
Aaaaaand it's time to go.
Danny would be leaving Gotham in two more days anyway, but he'd rather not risk it. Hood is getting... worryingly energetic about finding him. And the guy is a halfa.
He doesn't want the guy to figure out his ghost sense & ectoblast in a fit of rage and end up getting shot. Likely? Nah. Possible with his luck? Absolutely.
So Danny goes home a little early.
Two nights later he hears a chirp.
It's Red Hood.
His heart makes a valiant effort to leap out of his chest as he lurches into a sitting position. It's only with the second chirp that he realizes the sound is coming from really, really far away.
Huh. He didn't know they could carry that far.
On the third chirp he finally realizes how distressed the guy sounds. So he chirps back.
The next chirp doesn't come until homeroom the next day. Distracted as he is, he doesn't notice that it sounds closer, just that it's still coming from the same direction and still distressed, if less than before. Again, he chirps back, thankful that humans can't hear it.
The next one comes at lunch, again he answers.
There's one in fourth period, again he answers.
Three chirps sound throughout fifth period, again he answers to each. The frequency is starting to concern him but he can't afford to focus on anything other that the math lecture the teacher decided to jump right in with or grades will be doomed from day one. There are only two and a quater-ish classes left in the day, he'll figure out what's going on after.
Another chirp sounds at the very beginning of sixth period, and by now his reply is becoming more of a reflex.
Three more chirps sound in the first ten minutes of sixth period - Mr. Lancer's class.
As soon as Danny echoes the third, Red Hood practically tears the door off it's hinges and strides in, ignoring Mr. Lancer clutching at his chest and rattling off a book title and the other students beginning to panic in favor of chirping.
Unthinkingly, Danny echoes it back.
Everyone freezes at the speed with which Hood's head snaps to stare right at him.
Danny winces.
"Aren't you supposed to be in Gotham?"
Danny will deny that it was a whine for the rest of his half-life. It was a strategic distraction to prevent Mr. Lancer from something stupid like trying to hit a known crime boss over the head with a paperback, thank you very much.
"Gotham can wait I thought you went and died for a good two days! Then I find out your still alive but practically across the country? Without so much as a goodbye? Or a hello for that matter! I thought you might've gotten kidnapped! Only to find you in a school! I'm glad you're okay kid but holy sh- uh, cow - were you trying to give me a heart attack!?"
The rant gets louder as it progresses, and by the end of it Red Hood is huffing, having not paused to breathe even once.
The sound of him catching his breath is the only one in the otherwise silent room as everyone stares, wide-eyed, between Danny Fenton and Red Hood.
Danny hunches his shoulders, grimacing.
This'll be a hell of a situation to explain away, later, he thinks.
Aloud he says, "Um...no? I'm- I'm sorry?"
He can't see his expression past the hood but he can practically feel the guy squinting at him.
"Definitely sorry," he reiterates more firmly, sitting up straight. "I just, uh, I didn't think you'd care? I mean! I kinda figured it'd be a relief, I guess? Since I was, like, kinda...bothering you?"
He winces, cursing himself for reminding the guy that he'd been annoying him. Hopefully him being worried about Danny disappearing meant he probably wouldn't shoot him.
Despite the distortion, no one could mistake the gusty sigh. Especially not with how Red Hood rubbed his nose through his mask.
When he dropped his hand back to his side...
"You're grounded."
He blinked.
"What?"
"You. Are. Grounded."
"Wh- Bu- That's- you can't ground me!?" He sputtered, leaping to his feet.
"I'm very sure that I can. Because I'm very sure that you're parents will agree that following around a known crime lord is grounds for punishment. Not even counting that time you followed me into a live firefight."
"You can't tell them that! If they find out I left Amity without permission they'll put me in the Fenton stockades!"
"YOU WERE IN GOTHAM ALONE!?" Red Hood shrieked, practically lunging the rest of the way to Danny and grabbing his face - shockingly gently - turning it this way and that like he was checking for injuries.
"Does anything hurt? Did you get hit by anything? Did a bullet graze you? Did you inhale any strange gases!?"
Danny blinked.
Blinked again, grabbed Hood's hands, and shoved them away from his face.
"Oh my ancients I'm fine I was only watching and I stayed on the fire escape for the whole fight with the guns! Seriously, what are you my mother?"
"Forgive me for being concerned about a child sat 5 feet from a shoot out and apparently without an adult in the most crime-ridden part of the most crime-ridden city in the country," Hood hissed.
Paused.
"'Fenton stockades'?"
Danny blinked, shrugged.
"It's basically this big metal human-shaped thing full of spikes - except for the floor, I guess. It's fine as long as you stand still and it's sized for my dad so it could be worse but it still sucks so please do not tell them I went to Gotham. Please."
"...an iron maiden!?"
Danny blinked and shrugged yet again. "Maybe?"
With that, the Red Hood, crime boss of Gotham, serial killer and known enemy of Batman turned and left.
***
There'll be a part two in like. A few days maybe. Gonna finish part two of Actual Scientists Jack & Maddie AU first tho, so like... maybe three or four days
Danny is left blinking at the door in the echoing silence of Red Hood's departure.
Silence reigns, but only for a short time; the intruder alarms screeches over head not one full minute later - no doubt the moment Red Hood finally stepped off of school property.
Mr. Lancer closes and locks the door practically on reflex, then finally moves to call the main office. The alarm is shut back off not long after.
Principal Ishiyama commands them all to remain locked in their classrooms until she can get in touch with the police about next steps.
The second silence doesn't last long, filled, in short order, with friends and classmates alike shouting questions and exclaiming shock and disbelief.
"Great Expectations, people," Mr. Lancer shouts over the cacophony, "Settle down!"
And they do, but it's a tense kind of quiet; everyone's shoulders are tight and they practically vibrate with restrained energy.
Danny groans mournfully, finally sitting back down and sliding low in his seat.
"Mr. Fenton," Lancer begins, and Danny slides just that bit lower in despair. "Would kindly explain just what in Dante's Inferno is going on?"
His eyes are wild as he asks, shock and adrenaline lingering.
Danny can't really blame him, but that doesn't mean he's going to answer him either.
"I plead the fifth?"
"Mr. Fenton."
"Nope! What I did or didn't do with my summer vacation is my business-"
"Mr. Fenton," Lancer cuts him off sharply, "When a known serial killer marches into my school because of it it becomes my business."
"That's not fair!" he cries, sitting back up. "It's not my fault he came here! I didn't know he was gonna track me down!"
"You mean that he was telling the truth!?"
Danny winces, and Lancer falls back into his own chair, expression despairing.
"Divine Comedy, Mr. Fenton! What were you thinking?"
Danny doesn't answer, choosing to remain silent from that point on - he's not sure the exact legal implication of following around a criminal, but he hasn't technically admitted to anything yet.
When the police arrive a leisurely thirty minutes later, out of practice after the sharp drop in human crimes that accompanied the opening of the portal and the beginning of the ghost attacks, Danny still remains silent.
Sam backs him up, insisting they have no right to question them without their parents present - no matter how "friendly" or "routine" they claim it to be.
Their classmates clam up as well, more than willing to follow her lead in demanding their parents and guardians - if the Fenton parents' penchant for long-winded monologues at the slightest provocation hadn't taught them the value of keeping exfiltration available, the ghost sickness incident certainly did.
An hour and a half later the actual school-day is nearly over, and most students had been questioned and sent on. The only ones in need of pickup are Jazz - who, despite being in a different section of the school altogether, had been kept back with her brother to await pickup - and Danny.
The Foley's had been kind enough to offer them a ride home, but the police still wanted to question them - well, him - and Danny figured it'd be easier for him to convince his parents to leave the school than to convince the cops to leave his house if they had to do a home visit to be able to question him later on.

It was rare - incredibly rare - for Jason to attend family dinners.
Sometimes, one of them was able to talk him into it. Alfred had the highest success rate, of course, but respected Jason enough not to abuse his influence.
Sometimes, even if he was convinced previously, Jason would cancel the day of.
They understood. Bad days didn't happen on a schedule, even if they all wished they could help more than just giving him space.
No, Jason didn't come to family dinners on bad days. And he didn't come unless coaxed and bribed.
So it had alarm bells ringing in everyone's head when he showed up anyway, to a dinner he had very clearly and firmly said no to previously.
It might have been heartening - a sign that he felt welcome once more, a willingness to reach out, something - had he not come in with "Bad Day" etched into every line of his body.
His shoulder's appeared lax, but the backwards pull betrayed just how tense they really were. His expression was pinched, jaw locked and brows furrowed. But he didn't look angry.
He looked worried. Hesitant.
"Jay-bird! You came!" Dick cheered after his split-second evaluation, kicking out the chair next to him while Tim typed away, undoubtedly informing the few of them not-yet arrived to hurry it up Jason's here.
Alfred doesn't even have to pry Bruce out of the cave with a crowbar; he's sat at the table inside two minutes, and Steph is last to wander in not another minute after.
Dinner passes peacefully - well, peacefully for them, at least - but that tension never goes away.
If anything, Dick thinks, it gets worse.
Jason eats slowly - slower than he usually does, even, and he finishes his last bite at the same time as Cass - the slowest eater.
When he finally puts down his utensils he moves to look them each in the eye in turn, silencing the chatter they'd kept up to prevent themselves from staring at him, knowing - or at least suspecting - that he had something to say.
That something must have happened to bring him here in such a state.
When his eyes land on Bruce, he stops, and the tense anticipation in the room ratchets higher.
He grits his teeth, before taking a deep breath and visibly forcing himself to relax.
Bruce watches him, appearance calm and patient for all that Dick knows he must feel like crawling out of his own skin on the inside from the suspense.
"I need everyone in Crime Alley tonight," he says, inviting them - inviting Bruce - into his territory.
On purpose.
What.
He must say it out loud, because little wing looks him in the eye and repeats himself, more firmly this time.
"I need everyone in Crime Alley tonight." And his eyes flick to Duke. "Especially you."
For his part, Duke blinks, sitting up straighter.
"What's the situation?" Bruce asks, hands folded on the table between himself and his plate, elbows kept away.
"Perhaps it would be best to discussing business matters in the sitting room, Master Jason?" Alfred hints as he begins gathering the dishes from the table.
Instead of nodding, Jason merely grimaces.
"It's not crime-related...probably," he says.
He freezes as soon as the words leave his mouth, eyes visibly dilating and swirling fully green as his breathing picks up.
They all leap to their feet in preparation for a violent outburst, but he only takes a gasping breath and shoves his face into his elbows, hands fisting in his hair.
Despite his frame, he looks small like that. It's worrying.
But he's uncurling and leaping to his feet not a second later, shouting.
"Fuck what if it's crime-related shit shit FUCK!"
He moves as he talks, practically sprinting for the door.
Dick thinks his eyes looked wet.
"Woah, little wing!?" he shouts after him.
Jason pauses in the doorway to the dining room, looking back at them.
His eyes still shine green, but he doesn't move for any of them. Instead he just snarls out, "Well are you fucking coming or not!?"
"Absolutely, we are," Dick replies instantly, voice leaving no room for argument - not that he thinks anyone would. "But we still don't know what's going on, Jaybird. Why don't you explain on the way to the cave?"

The kid had followed Jason around for over a week. He always there, every night since that first meeting - well, for a given value of a "meeting."
Not being able to actually find him had been driving him crazy. Crime Alley is dangerous!
And he knows there are kids that wander the place, but most of them don't trail The Red FUCKING Hood into live. firefights. So he thinks his concern is actually perfectly valid, thanks.
An then, one night, the kid is gone.
Complete radio silence.
He tries to rationalize it away - maybe the kid just... finally grew some sense. Decided to find a safer hobby.
But it itched at him.
And Jason didn't have much faith in kids' abilities to see sense - exhibit: every Robin ever.
When dawn light starts peaking through, he realizes he hadn't actually gotten anything done that night.
He'd spent the whole night wandering his territory, eyes and ears peeled and disquiet worsening with every step.
He hustles back to his apartment and falls into a fitful sleep. When he wakes, hours later, he remembers the family dinner scheduled for that night.
Remembers Signal's - Duke's - meta power. All of the family were good trackers, but there were good odds he'd be able to actually see the kid.
Really, he just thinks the kid got him used to him being around and is now being quiet as some weird way of upping the hide-and-seek difficulty - because, really, it seems like that's the game he's going for. But Jason wasn't able to find him even when he was chirping.
So what if he asks for help? Just the once. They track down the kid, figure out what he wants, and talk him into a new and less-life threatening hobby.
He doesn't really think about worse possibilities until he says it.
Now that he has, he can't stop.
What if he was kidnapped? What he was murdered? What if he was kidnapped and then murdered?
What if the Joker found him following Jason around and decided to tie him up in a warehouse somewhere and have him rate crowbar hits until he decides to finally kill him, and here Jason is eating dinner with his family calm as you please and doing nothing. Just like Bruce.
He follows Dick's lead to the cave, the promise of aid keeping his nerves at a steady "coiled spring" instead of "active taser."
"Joker?" he blurts, unable to remember the bastard's current status when he's preoccupied worrying about 'Where the hell is my kid???'
"Still in Arkham as of 25 seconds ago," Barbara - blessed, wonderful Barbara - calls from the middle of the procession towards the elevator.
It makes him feel just barely better.
'Right,' he thinks into the following, expectant silence. 'I'm supposed to be explaining.'
And so he does, telling them about the invisible, chirping kid that's been following him around just in time for them to split up so they can suit up - Jason, thankfully, just needs to shed his top layer and toss on his jacket and hood. Gotta love go bags.
"If all you've heard is a chirping noise, then how do you know it's a kid and not just some weird birds or something?" Tim asks once they've all gathered back at the batcomputer.
"Fuck off replacement, I know what a kid sounds like," Jason scoffs.
"So, just to be clear, we're looking for an invisible bird-meta child?" Signal asks.
Jason grimaces. The others can't see it past his hood, of course, but they can all hear him pausing.
"He...might not look like a bird."
"It's rare for metas with non-human vocalization capabilities not to have visible accompanying mutations," Batman states. "Why do you believe that this is not the case in this instance?"
And suddenly that sick feeling is back in Jason's chest, crawling up his throat with every breath.
He can't tell him. He can't.
The evidence that it would be fine - probably - is standing not 4 feet away in black and neon yellow.
But Duke is Duke, and Jason is Jason.
And he just can't.
"None of your fucking business," he snaps - harsh and loud and furious and defensive and he hopes and prays they don't catch that last part, all the while knowing it's a futile wish in this family - and hops on the batbike, throwing a final "if you don't want to help me then fucking fine!" over his shoulder before taking off.
They catch up to him inside of a minute - all of them - asking where he last heard the kid. They arrive in Crime Alley soon after, and then the search is on.
