Jason,

You move like him.

Not a copy. Not imitation. Something more unsettling.

The same weight distributed differently, the same training lived in by a body that survived things the training was never designed for.

I know this because I have spent twenty-three years learning how Bruce Wayne occupies a room. What the air does when he enters it. The specific authority of his stillness. I know it the way you know music you were taught before you knew you were being taught.

You came back in September and walked through the Cave, and I felt it before I saw it.

The displacement.

The room adjusting.

I thought, Bruce.

Then I saw you.

Here is what I have not said.

I don’t know where my history with him ends and my understanding of you begins. I have been trying to locate that line for many years, and it keeps moving.

When I reach for you, I am reaching for something I don’t have to look at straight on. Something that does not force me to face the thing I have been looking at sideways since I was twelve years old, the need to be chosen by a man I was terrified of and would have died for, who picked me up from the wreckage of the only life I had left.

I know that.

I think you know it too.

I think that’s why you let me.

Because you have always understood what I cannot say. Because you are the only person in this house who knows what it is to survive Bruce Wayne and build something from the wreckage that belongs entirely to you.

We are the same damage.

Differently housed.

I am not writing to apologize.

I am writing because you deserve to know what you are to me.

Not a replacement.

Not a consolation.

You are the first thing I wanted that was not borrowed from someone else.

The first thing I chose when I finally understood I was allowed to choose.

Bruce held Sheila in his arms in her last moment, and in her last breath she told him how good of a kid Jason was. Told him he tried to rescued her. Told him he tried to cover her and took the main blast. Told him "...He turned out... to be... such a... good kid... He's... much better... than I deserved..." "...Such a... good boy.... must have... really... loved his... mother..."

Later, he found out the very same mother set her kid up, lured him right to Joker. He might have remembered her last words and then all of them suddenly make sense.
