i've been asked where/how to find early-mid 20th century images of black people to reference when drawing/writing/whatever, so i figured i'd link to my own personal resource anyone is welcome to utilize! :)
with over 900 pins and counting, this pinterest board focuses entirely on black style from the 1800s - 1970s. itโs been harder than ever to research historical fashion without running into AI, misinformation, and flat out mislabeling of different eras, so iโve done my best to represent each period as accurately as i can.
iโve included sections for non-caricatured art and illustration, print media, music, entertainment, styling tools, and ads. there are also sections for period pieces and more modern takes on vintage style. i did not add the 80s and 90s because there's already a wealth of imagery and information about those decades, but maybe one day :)
*NOTE: i am not a professional archivist or historian! just a black american passionate about my history. as such, this board is heavily centered on black americans and afro-caribbeans, although there are photos from across the diaspora, including africa and the UK.
*additionally: pins on pinterest come from all over and may not always have the correct information, depending on who uploaded it. while iโve taken great lengths to research undated photos, some categorized pins are educated guesses based on the hair, fashion, or photography style of the photo. uncategorized pins are photos i canโt confidently connect to a specific decade without potentially mislabeling.

Chinese is one of those languages where curse words are so commonplace that they lose a bit of their bite, but nevertheless:

ไฝ ๅฆ (ni ma): "Your mom." Used the same way as "fucking" for emphasis. Common variant: ๅฐผ็
This brings us to the lauded "fuck your family members" series. Here we have:

*I have no idea why the great uncle is singled out like that. You usually only fuck someone you're a direct descendant of.

ๆไฝ ๅฆ้ผ (cao ni ma bi): "fuck your mother's cunt." Common variants: ่ๆณฅ้ฉฌๆฏ, cnmb, cnmlgb
้ผ (bi), or "cunt," is not considered a particularly strong word in Chinese. The cunt series also includes:

OK, I have to ask. Is there any connection between ๆ (cao) meaning "fuck" and ๆนๆ (Cao Cao) the infamous warlord from the late Han dynasty? Or is it just an amusing coincidence, like that one story about the poet who eats lions?
ๆ was originally just a substitute for the more explicit ่ (ๅ ฅ่=โto enter fleshโ) Idk exactly when using ๆ to say โfuckโ became mainstream; itโs a character that just happens to sound very similar to ่. Oddly enough there arenโt a lot of characters that sound like โcaรฒโ, and I feel like most of them have been used as a euphemism at some point. ๆ was the most popular one and over time it became the de facto fuck

This is a beautiful graphic but it doesnโt explain the pros and cons of each fire type.
The Swedish torch is good for an efficient and contained fire, itโs controlled and good for cooking over and produces less light and heat than other fires. It can be difficult to keep going once you burn through the original log
The teepee is your traditional campfire. Good for heat and light not great for cooking, burns through fuel fairly quickly
The star fire is one of the slowest burning and not well protected but provides an even heat good for slow cooking and is excellent if you have limited fuel and need the protection a fire can provide
The lean to is a compact and efficient fire that evolves into a dense and hot bed of coals. The structure creates a good source of air flow which can help damp wood burn. A slightly better cooking fire that isnโt as bright. It also provides protection from wind on one side
The platform fire is incredibly hot and will create a very thick bed of coals but it doesnโt have a lot of air flow and is a little harder to get started.
The log cabin is big and bright and has lots of air flow which again is good for damp logs. You can also use this structure to start a smaller fire in the middle while drying out bigger logs. This fire will crumble into a messier bed of coals that donโt produce particularly even heat for cooking.
The modified leanto is excellent if you need it to perform multiple functions. The side with more fuel will burn bright and hot and the side with less fuel will burn less hot but more evenly and controlled, this gives you different cooking options.
For starting a fire, the Log Cabin is probably one of, if not the, most consistent and reliable kindling setups. Itโs tighter packed and has more protection against wind than a teepee, but still has sufficient airflow to get a good ignition, and enough structural stability to prop up the bigger logs long enough to get them burning consistently.

Ok I am again making up trans Sam headcanons but I keep finding things that kinda make sense for it (maybe I'm reaching but I don't care)
Watched Secrets again and Sam's dad is obviously kinda cold with her the whole time, he's going through a lot with his cancer diagnosis and all but still, shitty! But after he's blended with Selmak he's pretty immediately a lot kinder to her and I think if Sam IS trans and that's part of why her dad isn't great to her, a Goa'uld view on gender would really help him understand Sam being trans a bit more. The symbiote now living in Jacob's head spent the last 200 years blended with a woman, and he shares those memories. It might help him understand a lot of things?
Also the huge pressure Jacob puts on Sam to be exactly who he wants her to be, especially the "you've wanted to be an astronaut since you were a kid!" actually really fits this idea, he's looking for some kind of grounding that she's still his kid which is something a lot of parents of trans people do when they don't understand it all, trying to keep some kind of control.
Anyway I really like the scenes with Sam and her dad in The Tok'ra Part 2, you can see how weirded out she is by Jacob's personality immediately being a little different after the blending (amazing acting work from Carmen Argenziano btw) but he's immediately just a little bit warmer towards her and it feels like she's actually his daughter. It's not immediately, it does take a few more appearances, and that's good! You really get a feel for them slowly patching up their relationship over time.
And yeah I think it all fits really well with my own headcanon of Sam being a trans woman so I'm taking it!
Fully love and support this. Iโll be so honest tho when I started reading I had to very quickly figure out which Sam from which fandom was being talked about bc so many can be read as trans. And good for them tbh.
