Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.

The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).

The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.

But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

I have seen some stories that were more impactful than their transcripts, because the vocal tone, literal timing, and body language helped sell it. Text can struggle to replicate those things. Video stories have value.

Their tone of voice, their facial expressions, their mannerisms. These are all thing that add to the story that would not be present in a simple transcript of it. There is value in verbal storytelling. It's not always about the speed in which you can take it in! (And having a video-only tutorial is a different conversation than the original post specifying a "story.")

1. Old people can do new things if they want to, you don't stop existing or learning simply because you are aging. Maybe you should go outside and meet some retired senior citizens starting up learning new hobbies or skills.

2. Be like me and assume you will live until you're at least 100. Then being 24 is nothing. That's an infant. It's like charging your phone battery like "wow 24% is almost totally done for and full up." That's just absurd. 24% is nowhere near all charged up.

"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.

Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."

Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....

....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.

Look at this again: If you deprive your child of love, or abuse them, they'll fall for the first person to be kind to them and try to get shacked up way too young.
