i realize this ship has long since sailed but god i wish we hadn't landed on the word "consenting" as the default term for "happily choosing to participate in sexual activities"

there is literally no other context where we use the word "consent" to describe doing something you actually want to do for fun! you consent to a background check, or a medical procedure. if i said i "consented" to play tennis, it would sound like i reluctantly agreed to something i don't like because someone else really, really wanted to play tennis

and generally speaking you consent to something someone else is doing to you. which uh. bad.

of course it's important to make sure your partner(s) is (are) on board with what you're doing together, but I think there are better ways to say that than "make sure they're consenting"
