I'm still of the opinion that Identity Politics massively fucked over the Left, because you had a whole bunch of people whose intrinsic personal outlook was socially conservative get shoved into progressive spaces because they happened to be queer or other minority... and then, once there, started to redecorate the place to be more to their liking.
See, the more I research on this, the more I'm certain that political affiliation/perspective follows a bell curve in the human population, and cultural and environmental factors are what make the bell curve skew right or left in a given electorate/population at a given time.
But it's still a bell curve, meaning that any sub-population will still means you have people who are essentially biologically predisposed to a conservative or a progressive outlook and can only be shifted so far by that skew from where their own attitudes naturally fall.
And this isn't biological determinism or a "conservative/progressive gene" or any of that shit--this is how, across populations, people who tend to experience a stronger fear response or disgust response are more likely to identify with authoritarian or conservative ideologies... and it's so easily messed with that you can get people to shift more conservative on a questionaire by having a prominent reminder to wash their dirty hands in the testing room!
But the Identity Politics/"Queers/Minorities are Innately Progressive!" outlook meant that a massive number of socially conservative and socially authoritarian queer folks and minorities have been pushed into a progressive space that they are innately uncomfortable with, and have, as a result, been working to reduce their discomfort.
Biology isn't destiny, but it sure puts a thumb on the scale, and a massive chunk of propaganda methods are trying to figure out how to make the scales as lopsided as possible, by appealing to people's senses of fear and/or disgust in order to artificially inflame them.
