Marzieh Nieri, 23, was executed at Qazvin Central Prison after a court rejected her account of wounding a man who had attempted to assault her, bringing the number of women executed in Iran since the start of 2026 to at least 14.
Iran executed a young woman at dawn on Saturday who said she had acted in self-defence against a sexual assault, as authorities simultaneously handed a second woman ten death sentences in a separate case involving the killing of elderly men she had married.
Marzieh Nieri, 23, was executed at Qazvin Central Prison. Iran Human Rights said she had been forced into marriage at 17 under family pressure.
The incident that led to her execution occurred in October 2021, when she was 18.
At her trial, Nieri said one of her husband's business partners had attempted to assault her after becoming inebriated and that she wounded him with a kitchen knife in self-defence. Her husband was also killed during the confrontation.
Nieri turned herself in to the police four days after the incident, after going to her brother's home.
The court rejected her self-defence claim and, following a request from the victims' families for qisas ā retribution in kind under the Islamic Republic's law ā sentenced her to death.
Iran Human Rights said her execution brought the number of women executed in Iran since the start of 2026 to at least 14.
The executions come against a backdrop of sharply rising execution rates for women in Iran. The US State Department said at least 61 women were executed in Iran in 2025 ā the highest figure in 25 years and roughly 70% more than the previous year. It described Iran as far ahead of any other country in the number of death sentences carried out against women.
Killing a husband or partner is one of the most common charges in cases involving women on death row in Iran. Iran Human Rights said at least 21 of the women executed in 2025 had been sentenced to qisas for killing their husbands or fiancƩs.
Women's rights organisations say many of those women had a history of domestic violence before the killing, and that forced marriage at a young age, economic dependence, restricted access to divorce and limited legal protection leave many women with few options for escaping abusive relationships.
Qisas is a principle in Iranian law derived from Islamic jurisprudence under which the family of a murder victim has the right to demand execution of the convicted killer, or to accept financial compensation ā known as diyya, or "blood money" ā in lieu of the death penalty.
Iranian courts can only carry out a death sentence in such cases with the explicit consent of the victim's next of kin.

Idk if this is a controversial opinion but just because Iām a pale Jew doesnāt make me white.
People love demonising Jews for being āwhite colonisersā and jump on any pale Jew to prove their point but being pale =/= white like sorry not sorry. Calling me white is like calling someone whoās a pale Asian white. I am not even Ashkenazi not that it should matter but skin color varies a lot in my family. Even my siblings and father are a lot darker than me but we have the exact same ancestry, so how am I white and theyāre not?? I've said it before, but if what Ashkenazim faced weren't racism, then our specific genetic mix wouldn't be brought up by people on all sides of the political divide as "proof" we don't measure up. I've been called a "two-faced Jew" with "tainted mixed blood." Ashkenazi genetic results are scrutinized to see if we fit blood quantum at a deep and widespread level that, as an American, I've only ever seen happen to Indigenous Americans and First Nations folks. I've started to hate the term "conditional whiteness" because every pale or mixed person who currently passes muster with the white establishment will receive that dubious privilege until someone turns on them. The difference between light-skinned Jews and "other white ethnics" is that Irish and Italian-Americans will never be seen in this country as non-white again. "White" is functionally "your DNA is all European" now, racist as that is. Something which a lot of antizionists don't get, is that at least a sizable chunk of you are participating in fascism targeted at jews.
Dehumanizing people whose political opinion is different than yours, regardless of if you view the opinion as abhorrent, is a key aspect of fascism. And it also leads to another key aspect of fascism which is thinking its okay to wish death upon those whose political opinion you disagree with.
This is happening at an alarming rate to jews, zionist and antizionist, and even non zionists. Jews who aren't zionists still get the accusation of being a zionist thrown at them and all the fascism that comes being being a zionist, when they aren't even a zionist. And ofc zionist jews get people being fascists towards us too.
There are so many political opinions which disgust me, but I still view the person who has that opinion as human. Dehumanizing people is never good, even if they are a terrible person, they are still a person.
And this is not to say that you have to be friends with people who's political opinion you disagree with. I'm not. You can and should surround yourself with people who respect you and that you like. Not dehumanizing a person doesn't equal being friends or liking them.

The use of āAmerican Zionistsā as a clear synonym for āJews.ā The way one bad actor is somehow acceptably emblematic of an entire group of people. The way āHasidicā is purposely garbled and transliterated in the subtitle as āacidic.ā The way we are dehumanized into a nameless āthem.ā The way the tactics of white supremacy are used toward the endāwe are not just content to steal from Black folks, weāre coming for white folks too. (Itās the eternal Jewish conundrum: We are too white to be victims, not white enough for purists. Never mind that we are not a monolith, and some of us, like me, have roots in Eastern Europe and Spain and Egypt and Iraq.)
