A disgraced Palestinian author who has openly celebrated the murder of Jews and Christians has received a coveted book deal from Simon & Schuster, the prestigious New York City publishing house, the Washington Free Beacon can report.

Susan Abulhawa, who has attacked "Jewish Supremacist Vampires" and called Hamas's Oct. 7 massacre "a spectacular moment," has reached an agreement for Atria Books, a Simon & Schuster imprint, to republish two of her novels in September.

Jessica Laino, a spokeswoman for Simon & Schuster, sent a press release in July to the Free Beacon trumpeting the news and praising Abulhawa's "signature lyrical voice" and "nuanced characters."

Laino said Atria would rerelease Abulhawa's past novels Mornings in Jenin and The Blue Between Sky and Water on Sept. 29, 2026.

Atria is a prestigious imprint that has published bestselling authors such as Colleen Hoover, Brad Thor, Janet Evanovich, and Philippa Gregory.

Abulhawa first came to wide public attention months after the Free Beacon revealed that Rama Duwaji, the N-word-slinging, Oct. 7-celebrating wife of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, had provided illustrations for an essay published in the Abulhawa book Every Moment Is a Life.

The essay was published in February in Everything Is Political—an offshoot of self-described "environmental & social justice nonprofit organization" Slow Factory.

Abulhawa's record of posting explosive content denigrating Jews and celebrating violence was evident long before the Duwaji collaboration.

In one December 2025 post on X, Abulhawa wrote that Israelis are "rootless, soulless ghouls" and in September of that year called Israel a "cultureless, rootless human aberration in the form of a manufactured 'nation,'" adding that "we live in the time of jewish supremacist demons."

Also in September, Abulhawa described a pro-Israel commentator as a "lying Jewish supremacist cockroach" and bemoaned "Dual loyalty zionists."

Abulhawa described Israelis as "demonic parasite[s]" in a November post in which she said "Israel must be dismantled if humanity is going to have any chance at a moral future" and in another post said "we will have our revenge someday" against the "sons of satan."

The torrent of hate even led Mamdani—a long-documented opposer of Israel—to condemn his wife's erstwhile collaborator.

"I think that that rhetoric is patently unacceptable. I think it's reprehensible," Mamdani said of Abulhawa at a March 13 press conference, when asked about his wife's artistic collaboration with the writer (Mamdani claims Duwaji didn't know about the postings).

Abulhawa's hate-filled rants have continued even after Simon & Schuster announced the book deal. In a July 31 post on X Abulhawa declared the Holocaust had "lost its meaning" and that "the whole world is sick of hearing about it."

"These clowns invoke that genocide with every perceived slight," Abulhawa complained. "There is an extreme overrepresentation of Jews in every branch of government, media, and culture."

Earlier in July, she suggested that Jews were to blame for bringing the Holocaust onto themselves, and that it could soon happen again.

"The way zios keep boasting about the extraordinary power they wield reminds me of how they also boasted and took credit for Germany's defeat in the First World War that culminated in the Treaty of Versailles and led to the rise of extreme anti-Jewish sentiment. History will rhyme," read a July 24 post on X, which now has a community note to inform users it directly repeats the Nazi-era "stab-in-the-back" blood libel against Jews.

Rest in power Comrade Kozo Okamoto. You were an inspiration to all who knew you and all who knew of your heroic life. You were an embodiment of solidarity and love of the people," Abulhawa posted the very next day.

Okamoto was the last surviving participant of the 1972 Lod Airport Massacre, which left 26 people dead, including 17 Christian pilgrims from Puerto Rico. Lod Airport, in Tel Aviv, is now Ben Gurion International Airport.

Representatives for Simon & Schuster, Atria, and its parent company, the private equity firm KKR, did not respond to requests for comment.

Not much shocks me anymore, but this was a tweet from Susan Abulhawa, author of Mornings in Jenin, a mainstream author whose work a client of mine had acquired for publication in a European country just two weeks earlier. I am a literary scout, originally from London, based in Tel Aviv for the past eight years, and I advise clients in fifteen countries of the most exciting forthcoming books to acquire for translation.

I immediately attached a screenshot and emailed it to the client with the subject line “Hate Speech”, expecting a horrified, or at the very least mortified, response, and assuming the contract would be swiftly cancelled. This kind of behaviour is not tolerated in the genteel world of publishing.

Instead, I was told that the tweet had either been deleted or must have been fake, that the client did not regret acquiring the book, and that while they were sorry for what I was experiencing in Israel, Netanyahu was to blame and it would be better for me to leave the country as soon as possible.

This from a client of twenty years, once among my most Israel-friendly publishers, from a country my ancestors had fled generations earlier, now telling me where I should go.

It should not really have shocked me that Abulhawa’s tweets are hateful and antisemitic; a quick glance at the rest of her X account confirms that her tweets would not look out of place in Mein Kampf.

She calls Israel “a malignant cancer that has to be exorcised if humanity is to have any hope of a moral future”; she calls Israelis demons, vampires and ghouls, worse than Nazis, asserts that “the whole world is Zionist-occupied, apart from Palestine”.

Even the staunchly antizionist mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani was forced to publicly condemn Abulhawa’s rhetoric when defending his wife for having illustrated her essay “A Trail of Soap”.

No, what horrifies me is how invisible her (and most other) racist antizionism has become to the publishing industry at large. Susan Abulhawa’s first two books have just been awarded a splashy reissue deal by Simon & Schuster in the states, and she boasts a long list of international publishers who have come on board at frequent intervals since 7 October, her most recent Slovenian deal being announced just this month.

Nothing about this is seen as even mildly controversial in an industry which has fully embraced “Gazology”, a term coined by Free Press journalist and author Matti Friedman, to describe “a literature of Jewish evil…whose origins lie not in journalism or academic enquiry but in the pseudosciences that have sprung up over the centuries to explain the problems of humanity with stories about the malevolence of this group of people.”

Working in the international publishing industry since 7 October, I have witnessed almost daily announcements of deals for books that are obscenely biased, poorly fact-checked and inciteful against any Jew who values their connection to Israel.

It has often felt as though this supremely well-educated, affable community has been selectively lobotomised, its collective knowledge of the region’s history excised. I have been left baffled by the inability of agents and publishers to recognise an audience for books that grapple with complexity and nuance, relate historical fact, or speak about the conflict from any perspective other than an antizionist one.

I have watched groups like Fossil Free Books intimidate literary festivals and prize-giving institutions into divesting from any company or author with even the slightest investment in the Jewish state. This blatant bullying and cancellation of an entire people is scarcely spoken about within publishing circles. There has been an intellectual capitulation: a willingness to celebrate and platform venomous demonisation while trafficking in the tokenisation of the most fringe Jewish voices and the ostracising of the mainstream.

What the current state of affairs has urgently highlighted is the need to push back: to call out anti-Jewish racism, insist on a multiplicity of viewpoints, and begin building the pipeline and infrastructure needed to ensure that Jewish and Israeli voices are not silenced.

What the wider Jewish community can do in this moment is demonstrate the demand for Jewish stories: pre-order and buy the Israeli and Jewish books that do secure publishing deals.

I think Gradowski a particularly interesting comparison to Anne Frank specifically as well. He also spent most of his life wanting to be a writer and finally had that dream fulfilled posthumously through his writing about the atrocities he witnessed.

There is extensive but often indirect discussion of Jewish resistance. Both the final resistance of people (particularly women) about to die and veiled references the the ill-fated sonderkommando revolt he and his comrades would eventually die in.

When I say it’s bone-chilling, it’s descriptive, the ways it talks about the futile resistance of people being led to the gas chamber, watching people die painfully, having jewelry and gold teeth ripped from their bodies, the look and smell of human flesh boiling.

It is also a deeply emotional and humanizing look at the victims (both Gradowski himself and the people he, however briefly, encounters), as I said, Gradowski was a talented writer. He very effectively brings you into not just the gore and violence but the feeling of being a Sonderkommando in Auschwitz. Knowing you are not just helpless to stop the murder of your people but that you must participate. Seeing the look on the faces of mothers as they lead their children to their deaths. Watching your friends and comrades disappear and knowing you will as well.

And it’s angry. A stated purpose of the work is vengeance. He is preserving this information as evidence in a future trial or as he seems to want more bloody revenge. It is explicitly stated that the world’s remaining Jews “in lands where their foot was unable to reach” will come for the Nazis and kill them.
