What would a Yankee Candle go for in ancient Greece?

tbh the most confusing thing about it to them would probably be the glass that the candle is contained in. They might try to buy information about glass from you.

Yeah I should’ve clarified (pun intended). They had glass in the ancient world especially in Rome and Egypt but it was basically super heated sand and color additives put in a mold and often looked opaque and kinda lumpy. Even if it was blown like it was in some regions it wouldn’t have looked like modern glass.

Clear blown glass like you’d see a modern scented candle contained in wasn’t invented until the late Middle Ages and certainly wasn’t mass produced until the 1500s and even then places like Venice that had knowledge of these techniques literally forbid their glassmakers from leaving their city or region so other people couldn’t make it, forcing artificial scarcity and making it a very expensive material.

So if you showed a yankee candle to an Ancient Greek, especially one from a city or something, they’d be like burning scented wax okay not something I’d do but it makes sense. Also how the fuck is that glass transparent.

Like imagine if someone brought you something weird but understandable contained in a material that they said was made out of wood and you could tell that it’s clearly made out of wood they’re not lying about that but it was also completely transparent and see through with no visible flaws. That’s about the level of weird we’re talking about here.

The way all the 2020s have done so far have been making me categorically against every new generation of tech that comes out is insane. Like I'm from a technological boom generation, saw the first portable phones, nokias & blackberries & flipphones etc, and the first smartphones, and the first ipods & ipads & tablets in general while still having cassettes & DVD & MP3 players around so I know how all of it work, I had computer classes in high school, I did the transition between home desktop computers to laptops and back to gaming computers. But then they started to put internet in your printer & microwave, everything has ads & AI now and every update is worst than the last. I literally loved technology and they ruined it

Crazy about when people tell me how tiny my phone is just because I refuse to upgrade to something without a home button. Guys, new doesn’t always mean better. I don’t need a cell phone that’s the same size as my head, that was kind of the whole point of them being portable in the first place

Antisemitism has always existed but it’s never felt this fucking exhausting to be Jewish in all my 21 years of life. Five years ago my non Jewish friends were empathetic when I told them about antisemitism I experienced and now I know I can’t even discuss it with them five years ago I could draw fan art of fictional characters celebrating Hanukkah without getting death threats five years ago I could hang out in niche hobby spaces without seeing someone crochet a Star of David with a slash through it five years ago there weren’t posts on my city’s subreddit minimizing and denying the Holocaust and saying it doesn’t need to be taught in schools five years ago I could wear my Magen David necklace without being spat on five years ago I assumed I could have friendships with people who aren’t Jewish and now I feel like I’m constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop or for them to “find out” my “secret” like fuck man. When am I allowed to feel afraid?

This is so real though. The level of guardedness I have to walk through my day to day with is absurd. I can’t talk about my sister, about my weekend, about my lunch, because they’re all giveaways that I’m “one of them.” When people like me I want to scream from the rooftops that I’m representing all Jews. When people dislike me I want to remove myself from my identity entirely to protect everyone else. I constantly gear myself up to defend from an attack because I know people who are being attacked on the street and I’ve had to stop posting on Instagram because I get to choose between getting people to follow me so I can get a job or being open about my identity. I have a very Jewish name so there’s really no hiding it, but when people say “wow that’s a unique name, where does it come from?” I physically brace myself before saying it’s Hebrew, just in case. It’s scary.

And when we ask for help, when we point it out, when we say we’re afraid, the only people willing to help us are us. And that’s where this differs from other communities. Because I will always speak out for marginalized communities that I’m not a part of. But they most certainly cannot say the same for us.
