It was the middle of the night. Crickets were making noise outside of their house. And soft snores were heard behind him. Herbert has been having problems sleeping lately. Always waking up in the middle of the night. And waiting for hours to go back to sleep. He was sitting on their bed. Waiting for slumber to come. Which felt like hours already.

He looked back at Tavish and Jane who were peacefully sleeping. He smiles at them. Looking at them always brought him comfort. He fell madly in love with them when he first saw them. His heart flutters just thinking and looking at them.

Tavish with his explosives and swords. He loves it when Tavish gets excited when he gets to working on his stickybombs, grenades, and swords! Jane with his rocket jumping. It does make him smile when Jane gets excited to explain his "military plans" for their battles.

He loves them so much. He loves their bodies. He loves their voices. He loves their laughter. He loves their faces. He loves their smiles'. He loves their eyes-

…

His eye.

He turned around again in order to look at Tavish who was sleeping beautifully. A wave of guilt filled him up. He looked at his right eyelid where he put his eyepatch on. Herbert still blames himself…

No matter how many days, weeks, months, and years had passed. He still carries the guilt of failing Tavish. His liebe. His life. His everything.

He tried… And tried… And tried… And tried… And-

"Luv?" said Tavish who was now awake and rubbing his left eye.

Herbert snapped out of his thoughts. He just realized that he has been staring at him for a minute. His cheeks started to become warm.

"O-Oh. Hello, my liebe. Sorry Ich didn't mean to wake you up." He apologized while looking down, "Ich startled you… Didn't Ich?" He asked, still looking down.

Tavish stretched his body and looked at him. He immediately noticed that Herbert was tense. He looked worried.

"Did something happen?" He asked while he took off their blanket and scooch closer to him, "Ya look… tensed and worried, love."

Herbert immediately looked up at Tavish whose face was close to his. Their noses are touching. He blushed. His cheeks felt warm again. He looked into Tavish's eye and so Tavish looked back into his own as well.

"It's… Ich… failed you…" He finally told him.

"Is… this about me eye?" He asked him with a sad look in his eye.

Herbert slowly nodded and he clenched his hands together. He wished that he could get his eye back. He really did.

Tavish let out a heavy sigh and he spoke, "Luv… ye did the best ya could."

"Ja… but Ich should have kept on trying. Instead, finding the easy way out…", He responded back, "Ich still feel guilty and keep blaming myself for… scooping your beautiful brain."

Tavish will admit… he is still angry at the fact the man he trusted… betrayed him like that. It took him years for Medic to gain his trust, again.

He let out another sigh and spoke, "Ay… I am still mad about what you did… But what's done is done. And… ya did undo what you did to me brain. "

Herbert looked at him and nodded at him. But he still feels guilty and he slowly lets out a sigh as well. He's right. He did manage to undo his mistake.

"Is this why… ya couldn't have a full night's sleep… isn't it?" Tavish asked him.

"Ja… Ich… didn't want to wake you or Jane up. You looked so peaceful sleeping. You look so beautiful even when you're sleeping." Herbert responded while blushing while looking at him.

"Heh… Thanks, doc." He responded back while he felt his cheeks getting warm, "But… ya shouldn't keep these thoughts to yourself. You see. It's not good for ya health. Hehe." Tavish said as he imitated Herbert's voice. He gave him a small smug.

That made Herbert giggle softly and smile lovingly at him. Tavish is right. It felt good to talk about his thoughts with him. Talking about his problems with someone he deeply loves. It felt so warm and comforting.

"Heh…" Herbert lets out a soft giggle and turns around to look at Tavish, "Ich promise that Ich will tell you both when something is bothering me. Ich promise." He said as he kissed Tavish lips and held his hand tightly.

"Heh. I know. Let's go back to sleep, shall we?" Tavish said as he led him back to bed and lay together beside Jane who was still sleeping, "Goodnight, luv. I love you, man." He said as he kissed Herbert goodnight.

"Ich liebe dich so sehr. Goodnight, liebe." Herbert responded back.

But before, they both could close their eyes. Jane in his sleep took them both in his arms. Giving them both a tight cuddle. Which made them both giggle softly.

"Hehe. We love you too, tinhead." Tavish said while going to sleep with a loving smile on his face.

"Ja. Wir lieben euch auch." Herbert responded as well.

Herbert let out a yawn and slowly went back to sleep. This time… he managed to sleep with dreams of both of his loves'.

Translation:

"Ich liebe dich sehr" = "I love you so much." (In German)

So first, let's clear a common misconception: no, President Abraham Lincoln did not love Black people nor see them as human equals. At best he was centrist about it (though, even his implication that 'exceptional' Black men ought to vote got him assassinated).

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do, it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union...I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free."

The "freeing of slaves" after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 was meant to kneecap the economic and military powers of the seceded South. Lettuce stop making a white savior figure out of Lincoln, or thinking that my people's shackles were unchained via anything other than desperate war strategy and extreme violence. Think on that, for a moment.

That being said!

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

Marginalized identity is not a shield against accountability. She is still a white person, and being queer does not exempt anyone from perpetuating anti-black racism. This situation alone shows a desperate need for a BASIC understanding of intersectionality.

Being a woman does not erase her white privilege. Being a trans woman does not exempt her from anti-black behavior. Neither is calling those things out misogynist or transphobic.

And even if she weren't white, like the friends she was laughing with, identity defenses still fail: being a POC person doesn't erase anti-blackness when you are not a Black person. Non-black POC people can, and absolutely do, perpetuate anti-black racism.
