The sound of the phone rang out over the splash of the water spraying from the shower head, Warriors pausing where he’d been about to start washing his hair. The ring soon cut off though, which meant Artemis had picked it up. She didn’t immediately call his name either, which meant the call must have been for her, so Warriors went back to what he was doing, giving his hair the extra scrub it typically needed at this point in the week.
It shone as he dried off afterwards, and Warriors gave it a quick comb, then pulled on some comfortable clothes, letting the tension from the day drain from his shoulders. Any work was finished, chores caught up with, their son was asleep for the night... Warriors was looking forward to just relaxing with Artemis for a while.
He walked out of the bathroom with a puff of steam, and headed into the living room, expecting Artemis to be there after her own shower. Oddly enough he didn’t find her sitting there, and he gave a quick look around their apartment. He finally found her sitting at the kitchen counter, staring at the hung-up phone while she repeatedly twirled and untwirled a piece of her hair. It was a nervous tic Warriors was familiar with, and as Artemis continued to stare at the phone, he saw she looked... disturbed.
“Hey. Who was it?” he greeted as he walked forward, and Artemis hesitated. “...Arty? What’s wrong?”
Her fingers tightened around her hair. “It was my mother,” she muttered, hunching over a bit more. “I... hung up on her.”
Warriors blinked in surprise, and slowly sat down beside her, giving her a worried look. Artemis almost never spoke of her parents. In fact, Warriors hadn’t even known her mother was even living. She certainly hadn’t been at their wedding.
“What did she want?” Warriors asked.
“She wanted to see me again. I guess she changed her mind when she told me to get out of her life and never show my face to her again,” she said with a bitter laugh. “Probably because I’ve made a life for myself, and she wants in on it.”
“Artemis, I didn’t know your mother was alive,” Warriors said as he sat beside her, and Artemis grimaced.
“She is. Alive and kicking.”
“That’s a bad thing, huh?”
Artemis looked like she wrestled with herself a moment. “...It makes my life more difficult.”
“In what way?” Warriors asked, and Artemis rubbed her forehead.
“That’s... going to take some explaining.”
She stood and they moved into the living room, Artemis sitting heavily on the couch. She seemed uncomfortable in a way that was unusual for her, and as Warriors sat beside her, she set her head on his shoulder, her expression rather difficult to read.
Warriors put his arm around her, and Artemis let out a long sigh.
“My parents... didn’t love each other,” she said with some difficulty. “You know my father was a businessman, a rather successful one. He wanted a family to carry it on, and found my mother, who pretty much just married him because he was rich. They had me, but father wanted a boy, and despite how they tried, they never had any more children. Father got over it, but my mother never let me forget.”
“Was it bad?” Warriors asked as he set his hand over hers, and she nodded.
“I can’t remember a day they didn’t argue. I’m certain my mother only stayed with him as long as she did for the money— she divorced him when I was seven. They shared custody a while, but when I was eleven, my mother said she wanted nothing to do with me and quite literally threw me out of her house. And my father... he tried his best to care for me after that, but he was too busy to give me the attention I needed. He found Impa, and she became my caretaker. She’s more my mother than my real mother ever was.”
Artemis exhaled, and tiredly rubbed her eyes before she continued.
“I think I’ve told you before that my father passed away the same year we started dating. He had his protégé he left the company to, but I inherited a lot of his money. I either gave it away or dropped it into savings though— I suppose I was afraid if people knew then I’d end up like my poor father," she admitted softly. "Anyway, I would guess my mother’s been trying to track me down ever since he passed to try and get a piece of it.”
She closed her eyes, and Warriors gently rubbed her arm.
“I’m sorry, Zelda. That’s a lot,” Warriors said softly. “And I thought my family was complicated.”
Artemis gave him a smile, but she didn’t laugh, still looking unsettled.
Warriors lightly kissed her hair. “Hey. Don’t worry. We can handle one greedy woman with an agenda. If you don’t want her near us, just say the word, and I’ll make it so you don’t even have to see her face if she shows up. And I’ll get Sky and everyone in on it too. We’ll keep her away if we need to.”
“I know. I just worry about what she might try,” Artemis murmured. “She’s a horrible woman, Link. I assumed she’d never want anything more to do with me, but... somehow she got our number, she might know where we live. I didn’t tell her she has a grandson, but what if she finds out?”
Warriors tightened his arm around her. “We won’t let her do anything, Arty. It’ll be all right.”
Artemis sighed heavily, and her breath brushed Warriors’ damp hair. “I know. It just makes me angry, I thought she was done making my life miserable. It took everything I had not to give her a piece of my mind over the phone.”
“Well if she calls again, I’ll gladly tell her a thing or two,” Warriors said cheerfully, and his tone of voice pulled a small laugh out of Artemis.
“I think I’d like to see that. Goodness, she’d hate you if you met.”
“From what you’ve said about her, I think the feeling would be mutual,” Warriors said, and squeezed her hand. “I vote we pull out that extra cake in the fridge.”
“Weren’t we saving that for tomorrow?” Artemis asked as she nestled up against him, and Warriors shrugged.
“It’ll taste just as good today, if not better. Upsetting phone calls call for extra dessert. Malon says that’s the rule, and who am I to argue with her?” he said with a wise nod, and Artemis smiled as she gave him a kiss.
“All right. Malon wisdom is inarguable,” she said as they finished the kiss, and both stood to go get the cake.
She kept her hand in his though, and Warriors didn't let go, silently reassuring her that whatever happened, he'd be at her side through it.

So it took forever and I ended up experimenting a bit, but a sideline snipe for Art Fight of my favorite boy, Lost! I’m kinda a sucker for a good “fighting against the evil trying to overtake you” plot haha so of course I love him and his Zelda trying to save him 🩷🩷🩷 enjoy!
:O OH WOW LOOK AT HIM!!
Aaah thank you so much, he looks really good! I love how you did the evil purple on his shoulders, it looks great.
Ehehehe this made my evening, thank you thank you :D
Hm. So apparently people with epilepsy can learn to sense when they have a seizure coming. I wonder if you could use that as a plot device thing in a story somewhere.
Like there's some big-ass Great Public Council Meeting about some important politicial issue, Roman Senate style, and there's two opposing sides about the issue, but also a big chunk of undecided people who could be persuaded to vote either way. And there's someone in attendance, who hasn't spoken out loud about the issue anywhere but sides strongly with one of the options. And just when the dispute is about to swing to the wrong direction, they sense a seizure about to happen, and it's too late for them to try to get out of there or really even warn anyone.
So instead they just stand up, boldly announce, "I, for one, am sure that [option they do not want] cannot fail! If I am wrong, let the Gods smite me right where I stand!" and then the fucking seizure hits.
I used to get really bad nose bleeds but sometimes could feel when they were starting. One day in middle school this guy in geography class wouldn’t shut the fuck up about that conspiracy theory that Delaware doesn’t exist, so when I felt one coming on I loudly interrupted the rant our teacher was inexplicably allowing to derail the class by saying “if you don’t stop I’m gonna have an aneurism!” The guy of course just kept going so a second later a small torrent of blood gushed out of my head and, being a dramatic bitch, I collapsed face down onto my desk into a nice little puddle of blood. Anyway apparently outside of intense Roman Senate-esque debates, these stunts apparently induce panic attacks in educators and end up with you getting lectured about how traumatizing it is for your classmates when you “fake your death for dramatic effect”
This is the (current) full cast of characters for the Daycare AU, excluding parents/grandparents (I ain’t doing all that, not rn at least)
I’m putting short character bios here as well:
Time Lon Lon:
Married to Malon, loves his horse Epona. Has one bio son (twilight) and one adopted son (wild). He is the older brother of Warriors Williams. He comes from outside Hyrule (still haven’t decided from where gimmie a bit) and is generally seen by people who DONT know him as scary and tough. He’s not though. He’s a teddy bear. With a big scar and facial tattoos, but a teddy bear nonetheless (all the kids go to him for permission because he’s more likely to say yes).
Malon Lon Lon:
Married to Time, the ranch is her families ranch. Same deal with kids as Time (twilight and Wild), and sister-in-law of Warriors Williams. She loves all the kids at the daycare and is super maternal to literally everyone. Nobody knows how she ended up marrying Time, but they love each other very much and she was cited to have punched a man who suggested otherwise.
Warriors Williams:
Times younger brother, just graduated college with a (useless) degree in Paranormal Psychology, which ended up landing him at Lon Lon due to a lack of a job and lease. (See. “Warriors Vs. The Castletown Job Market” on Ao3) he had an unfinished degree in Social Work, and works as a daycare teacher on Lon Lon (after a brief stint as a ranch-hand, where he proved again and again to be a bit useless, but good spirited XD).
Twilight Lon Lon:
Malon and Times biological son, and adopted brother to wild! He loves riding on his dad’s horse, helping out with the animals, hanging out with his little brother and sky, and making fun of his uncle (wars). He is the closest with Sky and has known him since infancy. They are practically brothers lmfo. He lives at Lon Lon.
Wild Lon Lon:
Adopted at the age of 4 after a car crash killed his parents and little sister. Doesn’t remember the crash, but it left him with scars. He loves baking and cooking (especially with Malon and Twilight) and hanging out with his cool older brother(s?) and his friends! He is also close with Hyrule, what with their one year age gap and penchant for exploring. He lives at Lon Lon.
First Loft:
Sky’s dad and an old college roommate of Times. They have kept in touch and are still great friends. His wife died in childbirth and because he works in the airforce, he is deployed often and leaves Sky with the Lon Lon family when he is gone. They are practically an extension pack of the Lon Lon family at this point lmfo.
Sky Loft:
(Ha get it)
Firsts son, often stays at Lon Lon ranch for long stretches of time due to his father’s being deployed. He is closest to Twilight and Wild, and wears his baby blanket his mother made before he was born as a cape on occasion. He has severe Asthma and has a trained medical alert service dog named Crimson who helps alert him and others of attacks (and can also fetch medicine, what a good boy 🥹). He attends Lon Lon daily and does the after school program (at the family discount price lmfo).
Legend ???:
He doesn’t have a last name yet. Hyrule’s step-brother (they share a mother), fiercely overprotective of him. Sometimes, this comes across as aggression, but it really isn’t. He was not always mean, but rather concerningly obedient at first, so the anger he expresses is not seen as inconvenient or rude by the Lon’s, but rather a sign he feels safe enough to argue. Home situation is dubious (as far as others are aware). He attends Lon Lon ranch daily in the summer and every day after school during the school year.
Hyrule ???:
Legends step-brother. Has a morbid humour for a 7-year-old, but is overall very sweet. Always wears little gloves for no apparent reason. He loves exploring, and eventually loves exploring with Wild, too. He is more friendly and outgoing than Legend, but does back down quicker from any form of conflict, often passing arguments or confrontations off to Legend (who takes it without complaint). Home situation is also dubious, and he attends Lon Lon in the same intervals as Legend.
Four Smith:
A funky little guy. Every day he assigns himself a colour and insists on going by the colour, to the point where Malon and Warriors no longer greet him by his name, but rather ask him what colour he is that day lmfo. (I feel I should note it is never green when he’s at daycare) Keeps babbling about little creatures that are “super invisible but definitely real”. Gets sent to Lon Lon Ranch by his Grandpa who sends him because he can “no longer keep up with the little terror”. He attends daily year round.
Wind Anaru:
Small little guy, attached at the hip with his Identical twin brother, Spirit. Super adventurous despite not having super developed gross or fine motor skills 😑. He loves to swim, but isn’t very good yet, so you have to watch him around any bodies of water bigger than a cup (he will find a way to nearly drown). His grandma sends them both to Lon Lon so she can focus on Aryl, his younger sister who is still an infant, and also to socialize him. He attends daily year round.
Spirit Anaru:
Looks the same as Wind, but is much more reserved. While he lacks the bold recklessness that Wind has, though, he does have a bigger and more “grown” vocabulary (he can say more sentences and still make sense). He LOVES trains and will do anything for them, and is always trailing behind his twin. Attends for the same reason and in the same intervals as Wind.

That has to sting! But it's okay, little prince will have a scar almost like his mama... and he gets to enjoy a smoothie while she tells him all about her adventures 🍹
