Another cheery chirp sounds and Eddie might just throw his phone off Buck’s balcony.

How does Marisol not see how tormented he is? Have previous relationships been okay with this information? Oh, God- nope, nope. Anyone but him right now. Oh… someone, has he unintentionally become a twisted bad boy fantasy for her?

A shudder runs down his spine just as he registers Buck talking.

“It was a date. When you and Marisol ran into me and Tommy.” Buck pauses, swallows nervously. “We were on a date.”

“Really?”

Buck nods.

Eddie should probably be more concerned about whatever face journey Buck is experiencing at the moment. Unfortunately, his brain chooses to focus on a single realization.

“Wait- Tommy's gay?”

“Uh, that- that never came up while you guys were hanging out?”

“No. I mean, not that it would’ve mattered.”

“Sure,” Buck offers. “I don’t think he volunteers it, but he doesn't hide it.”

He gives the words a moment to sink in. Why didn't Tommy ever say anything? How the hell did Buck find out?

Right. Buck. His best friend, who is somber and fidgety, waiting for Eddie to respond.

“So, you two were…”

“We were on a date,” Buck says more proudly this time. “Yes.”

“Okay,” Eddie responds, lamely nodding along to his own internal thoughts.

“Is that… weird?”

Shit. That’s not what Eddie was going for. Way to go, Diaz.

“No! Absolutely not.” And because tonight is apparently meant for him to make his best friend’s confession weird, he adds, “I like him, too! I mean, not the same as you. Evidently.”

At least it gets Buck to smile again.

“Hey, this doesn't change a thing between us. Okay?”

“Well, that's a relief.”

There's a strange cadence in Buck’s response, like maybe he didn't get the answer he was hoping for.

“Although, I guess it doesn't really matter anyway because he dumped me.”

“Wow. That’s fast even for you,” Eddie quips, rather than admitting to the texts he got from Tommy not long after he and Buck left the restaurant. Not that Tommy sent anything scandalous or insensitive. Just the standard question of whether or not they were on for Muay Thai the next day.

Chimney: Well, Buck has a four year old now. Eddie’s at home with him and Chris. His name’s Theo.

Bobby: A four year old?! How long was I in that facility?! Did I miss them getting together?!

Chimney: It’s been a little over a year. And no, they’re still just friends.

Bobby: …Take me back to that facility. I don’t think I want to deal with this. Give me another year.

“That’s a joke, by the way,” [Tommy] adds after a moment of awkward silence. “I think I still know you well enough to know you wouldn’t…”

He trails off, attention caught by something further down the aisle behind Buck. The tell-tale rapid thwaps of little sandals on concrete gives Buck an idea of what it is.

Theo appears beside him, arms wrapped around a box of Honey Nut Cheerios that’s almost as big as he is. Theo doesn’t even like Cheerios, at least not this month, as the barely touched box currently in the pantry can attest. But he has really liked bees recently, ever since a trip to the garden center with Maddie and the gang, when Jee-Yun had told him that they make flowers grow.

“Eddie says I can have this,” Theo says, lifting the box above his head to try and tip it into the cart.

“Nooo.” Eddie’s a little out of breath as he comes up next to them. “I said we had to ask Buck first, remember?”

But he’s already stooping down, lifting Theo up from under his armpits and letting him throw the box down into the cart at full-force.

“Yeah, great, more cereal,” Buck says, doing nothing to stop them.

“Eh, I’m sure Chris’ll eat it,” Eddie says as he puts Theo back down, giving him a high five for his excellent dunk.

Then Eddie looks up, eyes comically wide, and does the most exaggerated double take Buck has ever seen someone think they could pull off in person. “Oh, hey Tommy,” he says, with the same faux casual air that Chris has when he’s about to ask if he can break curfew. “Been a while, huh?”

Tommy gives him a tired, tight-lipped smile. “Hey, Eddie,” he says, amused. “And, uh… who’s this?’

Theo gives him a curious once-over, but quickly decides he’s much more interested in seeing if he can climb up into the cart all by himself. Eddie stands close behind, hands hovering and ready for the inevitable. Buck’s mouth feels very dry.

“So, this is Theo,” Buck starts his rote explanation. “He’s my friend Connor’s son. You know, the friend I, uh… helped?”

He gestures vaguely to try to get his point across. Eddie cuts him a sharp look for doing that in public, hands shifting like he's about to cover Theo's ears. Theo is long past wanting to listen, not that he would understand, focused entirely on getting his foot up over his own head.
