you know conch shells? the fancy smooth ones? whelks are their less fancy, but far sexier cousin. theyâre both a type of sea snail (and mollusk). youâve probably seen whelk shells before:
i say sexier, because while conches are herbivores, whelks are carnivorous atrocities. iâm in love with them. conches are content with algea & plants. whelks took one look at crustaceans and other mollusks and said âTHAT. I WANT TO EAT THAT.â
these bastards literally drill holes through other creatureâs shells to get to the soft gooey slippery deliciousness inside. these knuckleheads will pry open clams using the edge of their shell and their foot (thatâs right, whelks have a muscular foot). sometimes they damage their own damn shells doing this. you know, like a bitch who is done caring.
also, when tiny whelks hatch in their egg casing they tend to eat their siblings, born & unborn. but thatâs⌠not really uncommon in the animal kingdom so iâm not gonna give them extra grief. iâve got siblings, those relationships can be hard.Â
