everybody 21 and under rn is like âomg y2k!!! early 2000s fashion!!â but will not TOUCH a pair of low-rise coochie jeansâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ.cowards im telling u right now if u were caught dead wearing high waisted ANYTHING in 2002 u would be shoved into a LOCKER and called slurs by a bitch named Hannah with a belly button ring and a whale-tail thong. commit or sit
WHY are you only considered a valid fashion historian if you only research fashion before the 70sâŚ.fuck you im 2000s fashion historian and all of you y2k cyber bitches with mink lashes are incorrect first of all take off your eyebrows and be humble . put your eyeshadow on wiht a fucking sponge
This is not an exaggeration⌠fuck you if you wanted pants that didnât show your pubic zone. So you had to be completely hairless. Did not matter wether you were size 0 or size 20. Your entire ass and belly were required to hangout. And you couldnât buy a long waisted shirt for like an entire decade. Thatâs why we started wearing dresses over pants. Fashion was cruel for anyone who wasnât rail thin in the early aughts. I had to start wearing menâs clothes just to not to be miserable.
This is all true. also likeâŚ. we used put on makeup so stupidly. All your makeup was from the local drugstore; nobody went to Sephora or could afford âhigh endâ stuff like MAC unless you were that bitch Hannah with the belly button ring. No brushes unless you count these dollar store little plastic nub applicator things with the white triangle tip that came with every eyeshadow or lip set you got from claires.
But yeah all the pants were as low as you can go and every fucking t shirt had a butterfly or empire-waist and peasant shirt nonsense. If it didnât have a butterfly, it instead said Angel or Princess in rhinestones.
Also can we talk about LAYERS? whyyy was everything layered like this, especially those dumb shrugs that were a tiny useless piece of cloth that covered nothing but your shoulders.
Canât forget about those juicy track suits either
And the notes talking about frosty eyeshadow and craft glitter everywhere is no joke. All of this shit could be bought at your local DEB or Gap and every look was layers upon layers of DISASTER.
And nobody was wearing ANYTHING high-waisted
oh the glory days
Look at Britney walking on her pants. All our pants were that length. Everyoneâs jeans were frayed at the hem from being stepped on all the time. If you went out in the rain or even post-rain water would wick right up to your knees.
A map of about every primary passenger railway in the USA for 2016, commuter rail included.
Surely there are more trains lines about than this ?!
Nope. Weâre animals. Iâve only trailed by train twice in the U.S., and it was the same line, once DC to Philadelphia, and once DC to NYC for work once I discovered the train was two hours faster than flying and cabbing back into NYC.
I do forget though that you guys fly everywhere and trains might not be practical. I live on an island the size of one of your states !
Fun fact: the busiest railway station in America (Penn Station in New York City) gets fewer passengers than Liverpool Central.
I knew the US had a much less extensive rail infrastructure than us, but bloody hell, the fact that there are ENTIRE STATES that literally donât have passenger rail is madness.
Iâd still love to travel on it some time, mind.
Just imagine the jobs you could create by building a decent railway system!
Behold, the end result of graft and political corruption.
I had no idea most of the US had no regional lines? Like, I live in tiny little MA with one of those clusters of red. Does everybody else have to DRIVE???
yes. we drive. and itâs terrible.
D: This is actually distressing.
to be fair some cities do have good bus systems
butâŚ.yeah.
what the shuddering fuck? Â Thatâs IT?! Â
actually we used to have a lot more, but as far as iâm aware iâm pretty sure the car companies bought a lot of railways and then destroyed them to force people to buy cars
Also some of those states that donât have rails also have more cows than people.
Also our trains are slow and itâs usually much faster to drive than to take a train. We donât have those speed rail things.
WAIT WHAT? THAT IS ALL?
There used to be more (map of train tracks 1870 & 1890), but, as @kaza999 pointed out, alot of it was destroyed on purpose by General Motors in the firsty half of the 1900s to, ahem, pave the way for the primacy of the car. Â And, since then, any investment in rail infrastructure (or any infrastructure at all, for that matter) has been opposed on ideological grounds by the conservative wing.
When you suddenly understand Sheldonâs train enthusiasm
And then thereâs Europe:
And because that looks a tiny bit cluttered (and because weâre a German blog), hereâs a railway map of Germany:
In red are the high speed InterCityExpress lines, blue are the InterCity lines and the grey ones are smaller regional lines.
And for Americans who donât know how large Germany is: It is half the size of Texas.
I think a lot of abled people get confused about ableism because they fail to recognize how diverse a category disability is. There are so many kinds of disabilities - intellectual, sensory, motor, chronic illness, neurodivergence, limb differences, to name a few - and people in these categories will have different needs.
Which is why you often end up with disability advocates saying seemingly "contradictory" things. One group may be advocating for more support while another wants increased independence. People with a terminal illness will fight for a cure and more research whereas some ND/sensory disabilities want to stop having their experience medicalized, and so on. The kinds of ableism that people experience will also vary for that reason.
And having one kind of disability doesn't make you an expert on all of them! Which is why it's important to have diverse disability rep within organizations and groups. I've encountered organizations in the past that claim to be accessible/disability friendly because they have one disabled person on their board, only to find them woefully unequipped to deal with my very different disabilities.
This disability pride month I really encourage abled "allies" to examine the ways they try to flatten disability into a monolith and to make an effort to listen to and uplift diverse disabled voices.

Yeah, this seems about right.
Load Bearing Coconut
From The Hackers Dictionary, a tale recounted by Guy L. Steele (GLS):
Some years ago, I (GLS) was snooping around in the cabinets that housed the MIT AI Labâs PDP-10, and noticed a little switch glued to the frame of one cabinet. It was obviously a homebrew job, added by one of the labâs hardware hackers (no one knows who).
You donât touch an unknown switch on a computer without knowing what it does, because you might crash the computer. The switch was labeled in a most unhelpful way. It had two positions, and scrawled in pencil on the metal switch body were the words âmagicâ and âmore magicâ. The switch was in the âmore magicâ position.
I called another hacker over to look at it. He had never seen the switch before either. Closer examination revealed that the switch had only one wire running to it! The other end of the wire did disappear into the maze of wires inside the computer, but itâs a basic fact of electricity that a switch canât do anything unless there are two wires connected to it. This switch had a wire connected on one side and no wire on its other side.
It was clear that this switch was someoneâs idea of a silly joke. Convinced by our reasoning that the switch was inoperative, we flipped it. The computer instantly crashed.
Imagine our utter astonishment. We wrote it off as coincidence, but nevertheless restored the switch to the âmore magicâ position before reviving the computer.
A year later, I told this story to yet another hacker, David Moon as I recall. He clearly doubted my sanity, or suspected me of a supernatural belief in the power of this switch, or perhaps thought I was fooling him with a bogus saga. To prove it to him, I showed him the very switch, still glued to the cabinet frame with only one wire connected to it, still in the âmore magicâ position. We scrutinized the switch and its lone connection, and found that the other end of the wire, though connected to the computer wiring, was connected to a ground pin. That clearly made the switch doubly useless: not only was it electrically nonoperative, but it was connected to a place that couldnât affect anything anyway. So we flipped the switch.
The computer promptly crashed.
This time we ran for Richard Greenblatt, a long-time MIT hacker, who was close at hand. He had never noticed the switch before, either. He inspected it, concluded it was useless, got some diagonal cutters and diked it out. We then revived the computer and it has run fine ever since.
We still donât know how the switch crashed the machine. There is a theory that some circuit near the ground pin was marginal, and flipping the switch changed the electrical capacitance enough to upset the circuit as millionth-of-a-second pulses went through it. But weâll never know for sure; all we can really say is that the switch was magic.
I still have that switch in my basement. Maybe Iâm silly, but I usually keep it set on âmore magicâ.

One time this man approached me in a bar talking in Spanish. So I assumed he was Spanish and we started speaking, we had a whole ass conversation and at some point he was like. So what part of Spain are you from? And I said well Iâm Italian actually. What part of Spain are you from? And he was like. Iâm Greek.
One time I was in Argentina and I was so tired of trying to speak Spanish because Iâm not very good at it lmao so I broke into exasperated English and the retail seller girl quickly understood me and engaged me in conversation. We talked for a while, she introduced me to a makeup brand, and then I decided to buy it. While she was packaging the purchase, she asked me if I were from the US or perhaps the UK and I just said âoh no Iâm Brazilian hahahâ and she looked me straight in the eyes and said, in clear Portuguese, âIâm Brazilian tooâ
When my dad went to China on a work trip, his Mandarin speaking wasnât great but his listening was fine (his first language is Cantonese) and he encountered a German guy who had moved to China to work. My dad knew how to speak German because he studied it in university (but wasnât great when it came to listening to new vocab he hadnât studied before), and the German guy knew Mandarin because he lived and worked in China, so they had a conversation where my dad spoke to the German guy in German and the guy responded in Mandarin. Iâm sure it confused a lot of their coworkers who just saw the Asian guy speaking German and the white guy speaking Mandarin.
Some years ago, I worked for a manufacturing company that had a service depot in China. One of the engineers from the main office here in the US spent most of his time at the depot. The problem was that he didnât speak *any* of the various Chinese languages, and no one at the depot spoke any English. They all, however, spoke Spanish.

guns labeled âswordâ
being better than anything shakespeare ever produced
i dislike the implication that shakespeare wouldnât have done the exact same thing if he were alive in the 90â˛s
Fun fact, the guns being labelled âswordâ is not just them being Extraâ˘.Â
Most of the guns being used by the main characters are modified Taurus PT99 pistols, the different types of which are often named after specific types of knives and swords, thus enabling them to not have to change the Shakespearean dialogue, but to also manage that specific visual pun.Â
So Shakespeare would have absolutely been 100% all over that shit.
For example, Tybaltâs gun is a modified 9mm âRapierâ (from the Taurus PT99 Series âRâ) and is actually one of my favorite visual aesthetics of quite probably any weapon in movie history to date.Â
While everyone else seems to be using a much more heavier and âpowerfulâ version of pistol, his is sleek and light in frame, making it much easier for him to fight the way that he does. Which is undoubtedly Extra⢠in comparison to everyone else, but also intended to mimic the dueling stance of actual rapier swordsmen of the time who relied on speed rather than brute force. They were Gentlemen after all. If you were going to cut someone down you ought to do it with some finesse.
If you look closely at his hand youâll notice that with the exception of his middle finger on the trigger, heâs actually holding it the way one would a sword hilt. Heâs also got the poise of a honed duelist.Â
This is someone who has been brought up with a very strong sense of Family Honor, and is expected to fight to defend it, but not as a common foot soldier (who carry âlongswordsâ which are modified shotguns in the film), but as a Gentleman.Â
A gentleman who suddenly finds himself having to fight in the streets with people carrying âdaggersâ.
Like Mercutioâs modified pistol, which while beautiful and (importantly thematic) transparent in its function, is also heavy and cumbersome in comparison to Tybaltâs rapier, which also has a much further range, something he also makes better use of with the addition of a quick release mount for a c-scope, which allows him to either be slow and accurate, or to forgo accuracy for speed during say, a one on one duel vs a street brawl.
Which means even if he canât make as many quickfire short range movements as Mercutio can, heâs still going to fucking obliterate him with the practiced ease of someone who has been training for duels their entire life.
Not to mention just how fucking ornate this thing is. Look at it. What an extra little sob, I love it. I love the whole movie. Itâs an excellent adaptation and Iâll bite my thumb at anyone who says otherwise.Â
Just like the Bard intended.
working full time is terrible why do we just accept that having 8 days off a month is normal and okay........ being alive could be cool but we waste it at our JOBS.... sorry iâm just heated about capitalism again iâll be fine
8 days....never thought about it like that đ
This seems really whiny to me. Like, I agree with you, work sucks, but our ancestors didnât get to browse tumblr at their desks or have the option to gleefully spend their ENTIRE WEEKENDS horizontal on the couch stuffing their faces/watching tv/playing video games/wacking off. They didnât have weekends. They just slaved away as fucking peasants from dawn to dusk until they died in childbirth or got the consumption.
I am perfectly happy working 8 hrs a day because I donât have to:
grow my own food
find my own clean water
heat my house
shit in the woods
Hi, I study social and cultural anthropology. Humans working 40+ hours a week is 100% an industrial revolution thing and was not normal in the early stages of our existence. In fact, hunter and gatherer societies that still exist to this day spend about 15-20 hours a week TOPS working. The rest is dedicated to sitting around and telling stories and jokes, dancing, singing, eating, sleeping, fucking and so forth. Read a damn book.
Medieval peasants lived grueling, terrible lives. But their vacation days beat out the policies now common even in progressive societies.
đ¤đŹđĄ
When the medieval peasant - the iconic, screwed over, worst off person of pop culture - had more days and time off than you, somethingâs gone wrong. And apparently something has been wrong for a while now...
Ya ever feel like the ideal body type for women was inherently just classism and the perfect way to treat women like trophies because like back when women were Thick⢠as an ideal body type the only women who were able to look like that were the rich and today now the type is super thin and the only women who can look like that are the women who donât work labour jobs and can afford not to have a carb diet so basically men only go for rich women and have changed how they objectify women not because of some biological quirk that shifts their lust but entirely because the form of the most privileged women has changed therefore the best trophy to keep
It literally was. Fat was hype when malnutrition and starvation were common. A symbol of leisure.
Gucci Skinny was hype when malnutrition from cheap food was common and when most of the middle class had desk jobs. Symbol of control over women who now had more rights.
Instagram Fit ⢠is hype because most people are overworked and too broke to exercise or eat properly. A symbol of âleisureâ and wealth.
There it is.

call me ignorant but i genuinely donât understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. thatâs a thing you can measure. thatâs a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if itâs actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. donât do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? Thatâs fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them âbrokenâ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didnât even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
Itâs often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, theyâll be heartbroken when theyâre hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.Â
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered âmanlyâ and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the womenâs comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why canât they get the same prize money and when theyâre competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who donât look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. Itâs why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
Reminder that in international (and usually national too) womens athletics anybody with 5m/mol of natural testosterone or higher is disqualified. (See legal case of Dutee Chand vs IAAF.)
Do you or somebody you know have PCOS? You are banned from international womens athletics because you are supposedly in posession of an unreasonable advantage in sports.
Folks disqualified for hyper-androgenism in womens athletics.
Francine Niyonsaba
Caster Semenya
Dutee Chand
Margaret Wambui
And more
-
Why are those disqualified overwhelmingly black and brown? Because testing is case by case when an athletes performance âraises suspicionsâ. They overwhelmingly test athletes of colour, for being too fast and not meeting white expectations of femininity.
Racism and intersexism(discrimination against intersex people) in sports is abject evil. Desegregate sports.
All of this.
The argument that âbiological differencesâ make coed sports unfair is bs, because then weâd be directly segregating by things like metabolism levels, testosterone levels, height and weight. Not sex. Take one example: Michael Phelps. He has an innately higher lung capacity (twice that of the average person) that gives him an advantage. A biological difference that gives him an unfair advantage. Technically, if physical differences are unfair, he should be disqualified.
