Every year I diagnose at least one cat with renal failure due to lily poisoning. If you have cats please donāt have lilies.
Weāve had 4 this year already, not really looking forward to Easter
I will reblog this every Christmas season Iām on tumblr.
Itās beginning to look a lot like shit scram
Merry Shitscram!
HEREāS THE THING THOUGH
I used to work for a call center and I was doing a political survey and I called this number that was randomly generated for me and the way our system worked was voice-activated so when the other person said hello youād get connected to them, so I just launch right into my āHarvard University and NPR blah blah blahā thing and then thereās this long pause and I think the personās hung up even though I didnāt hear a click
And then I hear āyou shouldnāt be able to call this number.ā
So I apologize and go into the preset spiel about because we arenāt selling anything, etc. etc. and the answer I get is
āNo, I know that. What I mean is that it should be impossible for you to call this number, and I need to know how you got it.ā
I explain that itās randomly generated and Iām very sorry for bothering him, and go to hang up. And before I can click terminate, I hear:
āMaāam, this is a matter of national security.ā
I accidentally called the director of the FBI.
My job got investigated because a computer randomly spit out a number to the Pentagon.
This is my new favourite story.
When I was in college I got a job working for a company that manages major air-travel data. It was a temp gig working their out of date system while they moved over to a new one, since my knowing MS Dos apparently made me qualified.
There was no MS Dos involved. Instead, there was a proprietary type-based OS and an actually-uses-transistors refrigerator-sized computer with switches I had to trip at certain times during the night as I watched the data flow from six pm to six AM on Fridays and weekends. If things got stuck, I reset the server.Ā
The company handled everything from low-end data (hotel and car reservations) to flight plans and tower information. I was weighed every time I came in to make sure it was me. Areas of the building had retina scanners on doors.Ā
During training. they took us through all the procedures. Including the procedures for the red phone. There was, literally, a red phone on the shelf above my desk. āThis is a holdover from the cold war.ā They said. āIt isnāt going to come up, but hereās the deal. In case of nuclear war or other nation-wide disaster, the phone will ring. Pick up the phone, state your name and station, and await instructions. Do whatever you are told.ā
So my third night there, itās around 2am and thereās a ringing sound.Ā
I look up, slowly. The Red phone is ringing.
So I reach out, I pick up the phone. I give my name and station number. And I hear every station head in the building do the exact same. One after another, voices giving names and numbers. Then silence for the space of two breaths. Silence broken byā¦
āUh⦠Is Shantavia there?ā
It turns out that every toll free, 1-900 or priority number has a corresponding local number that it routs to at its actual destination. Some poor teenage girl was trying to dial a friend of hers, mixed up the numbers, and got the atomic attack alert line for a major air-travel corporationās command center in the mid-west United States.
Thereās another pause, and the guys over in the main data room are cracking up. The overnight site head is saying āI think you have the wrong number, maāam.ā and Iām standing there having faced the specter of nuclear annihilation before I was old enough to legally drink.
The red phone never rang again while I was there, so the people doing my training were only slightly wrong in their estimation of how often the doomsday phone would ring.Ā
Every time I try to find this story, I end up having to search google with a variety of terms that Iām sure have gotten me flagged by some watchlist, so Iām reblogging it again where I swear Iāve reblogged it before.
But none of these stories even come close to the best one of them all; a wrong number is how the NORAD Santa Tracker got started.
Seriously, this is legit.
In December 1955, Sears decided to run a Santa hotline.Ā Hereās the ad they posted.
Only problem is, they misprinted the number.Ā And the number they printed?Ā It went straight through to fucking NORAD.Ā This was in the middle of the Cold War, when early warning radar was the only thing keeping nuclear annihilation at bay.Ā NORAD was the front line.
And it wasnāt just any number at NORAD.Ā Oh no no no.
Terri remembers her dad had two phones on his desk, including a red one. āOnly a four-star general at the Pentagon and my dad had the number,ā she says.
āThis was the ā50s, this was the Cold War, and he would have been the first one to know if there was an attack on the United States,ā Rick says.
The red phone rang one day in December 1955, and Shoup answered it, Pam says. āAnd then there was a small voice that just asked, 'Is this Santa Claus?ā ā
His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke ā but then, Terri says, the little voice started crying.
āAnd Dad realized that it wasnāt a joke,ā her sister says. āSo he talked to him, ho-ho-hoād and asked if he had been a good boy and, 'May I talk to your mother?ā And the mother got on and said, 'You havenāt seen the paper yet? Thereās a phone number to call Santa. Itās in the Sears ad.ā Dad looked it up, and there it was, his red phone number. And they had children calling one after another, so he put a couple of airmen on the phones to act like Santa Claus.ā
āIt got to be a big joke at the command center. You know, 'The old manās really flipped his lid this time. Weāre answering Santa calls,ā ā Terri says.
And then, it got better.
āThe airmen had this big glass board with the United States on it and Canada, and when airplanes would come in they would track them,ā Pam says.
āAnd Christmas Eve of 1955, when Dad walked in, there was a drawing of a sleigh with eight reindeer coming over the North Pole,ā Rick says.
āDad said, 'What is that?ā They say, 'Colonel, weāre sorry. We were just making a joke. Do you want us to take that down?ā Dad looked at it for a while, and next thing you know, Dad had called the radio station and had said, 'This is the commander at the Combat Alert Center, and we have an unidentified flying object. Why, it looks like a sleigh.ā Well, the radio stations would call him like every hour and say, 'Whereās Santa now?ā ā Terri says.
For real.
āAnd later in life he got letters from all over the world, people saying, 'Thank you, Colonel,ā for having, you know, this sense of humor. And in his 90s, he would carry those letters around with him in a briefcase that had a lock on it like it was top-secret information,ā she says. āYou know, he was an important guy, but this is the thing heās known for.ā
āYeah,ā Rick [his son] says, āitās probably the thing he was proudest of, too.ā
So yeah.Ā I think that might be the best wrong number of all time.

I just read this super sad post about this girl whoās asexual and married and everyone is basically telling her that she doesnāt deserve her husband/sheās just a prude/she should just do it anyway. So I want to tell you all right now that if people tell you this, or if they tell you youāll never have a relationship, it is BULLSHIT. My husband is asexual and Iām not. Heās sex repulsed, we donāt have sex, we never have. And it doesnāt matter to me. You know what does? He does. His mental health and wellbeing matter to me. Because he is my best friend and heās one of the smartest, kindest, funniest people Iāve ever met. And heās had people tel him that heās broken and it makes me SO ANGRY because they are WRONG. Being different doesnt mean youāre broken. If you donāt like sex/donāt want it/etc. Do not let anyone tell you that youāre inferior because youāre not. Do not let anyone convice you that youāll never have a relationship because theyāre wrong(if you want one). You are not broken, and it will be okay.
This made me feel really good. Remember this, for all my ace spectrum friends out there
#itās really reassuring to hear from the partnerĀ #the one whoās not aceĀ #but is totally cool with having no sexĀ #loves her husband anywayĀ #is in a stable and happy relationshipĀ #itās such a relief when you discover that asexuality is a thingĀ #that youāre okayĀ #but then you start to wonder if it means your only chance at not ending up alone is finding someone else whoās also aceĀ #but noĀ #turns out itās notĀ #thatās really good to hearĀ #soĀ #thanksĀ #so aceĀ #so space
I hope you donāt mind me reblogging your tags but these are my feelings EXACTLY
Iām always a little nervous that Iām notĀ āgood enoughā for aĀ āreal relationshipā because sex isnāt on the table. So yeah, these stories are reassuring
The amount of pressure from society to have sex is incredible. Weāre told itās linked to relationship health and if youāre not willing to do every damn thing youāre labeled a prude. Itās incredibly disheartening, especially considering how oneās libido can change over the years even if youāre not ace. Nice to see a supportive piece from a partner.
OK, kids, buckle up itās story time.
When I got married, I hadnāt had sex yet. Ā Waiting until marriage was important to me, so thatās what I did. Ā My wedding night was the first time I had sex.
It sucked.
I figured, ok, this is new for both of us, itās probably going to take some practice.
A year later? Ā It still sucked Ā We tried a lot of different stuff. Ā A lot Ā of different stuff.Ā It sucked so bad, we even bought a copy of āSex for Dummiesā.
(it didnāt help)
I started working late so I didnāt go to bed at the same time as my husband. Ā Every time he would travel for work, Iād be grateful that I didnāt have to go through the awkwardness of avoiding his advances when I went to bed.
He didnāt think it was healthy for a newlywed couple to have sex less than once a week. Ā So we scheduled it. Ā Repeat, scheduled intimacy. Ā I thought I was putting on a brave face and doing what I needed to do to maintain a good relationship.
Because I had no idea that asexuality was a thing.
I talked to my husband, told him I didnāt like sex. Ā He didnāt understand. Ā I lost track of how many times I said:Ā āItās not that I donāt want to have sex with you. Ā I donāt want to have sex with anyone.ā
So it was established, Amber doesnāt like sex.
But we still did it. Ā Because I wanted my husband to be happy. Ā Sometimes halfway through, Iād start crying.
And heād always be supportive, and apologize.
AfterĀ he finished.
So when I found out about asexuality, and told him how I felt, he suggested I go to a doctor. Ā Because obviously there was something wrong with me.
So I went to a doctor.
(surprise, surprise, Iām perfectly healthy)
Then I told my mom. Ā When she suggested meds to improve my sex drive, I broke down in tears. Ā I told her there was nothing wrong with me. Ā And my mom has been 100% supportive of my orientation ever since. Ā When people ask if Iām a lesbian, she teaches them about asexuality. Ā
But anyway back to my journey of self-discovery
So I tell my husband, Iām asexual, I donāt want to have sex. Ā You are notĀ asexual, you do want to have sex. Ā One of us is going to be miserable in this relationship, and Iām tired of it being me. Ā I love you too much to make you miserable for the rest of your life, but I love myself too much to be miserable for the rest of my life. Ā We might have to face the fact that weāre not right for each other.
So his immediate response isĀ āno, I can change, Iāll do anything, divorce is not an option, etcā
But I canāt exactly ask him to stop wanting to have sex. Ā Because thatās not how allosexual people work. Ā And he canāt seduce me into wanting to have sex, because thatās not how asexual people work.
Anyway. Ā He cries, I cry, we decide on marriage counseling to help our comunication.
Because weād been married for almost 6 years by this point, and had been together for 3 years before that, and we stillĀ canāt really talk about what we want (or donāt want) in regards to sex.
So we go to counselling for 6 weeks. Ā The first 3 sessions individually, and the last 3 together. Ā During the together sessions, the therapist would prompt us with a question, and weād talk to each other, being completely honest about things.
During (what turned out to be) our last session, Iād finally had enough. Ā Iād had enough of being embarrassed about what anyone else would think. Ā Enough of the gender roles I was being forced into. Ā Enough of paying someone to watch me talk to my husband. Ā Enough of pretending to salvage a relationship that I had been increasingly avoiding over the past 2 years, and I said:
āJosh, I love you. Ā We have communication problems, but weāve been together almost ten years and Iām willing to work through those if you think we can make it work. Ā But I am never having sex with you again.ā
(At this point, the therapist whoād been trying to get us to communicate put down her notebook and said, ok I think weāre done.)
Then and onlyĀ then, did he agree to file for divorce.
āāāāāā
I say all that to say this:
Donāt you dareĀ fucking tell me that asexual representation doesnāt matter. Ā I would have six years of my life back if I had known.
And if youāre in a relationship, talk to each other oh my God. Ā About everything. Ā What dream you had last night. Ā That song from scout camp that randomly gets stuck in your head. Ā The reason you donāt like sweet potato. Ā That embarrassing thing you did in third grade that still makes you mad when you think about it. Ā If you and your partner can share these tiny, intimate details, talking about sex is no big deal. Ā And it takes practice, so practice.
āāāāā
On a happy note, now, 3 years after the divorce, I am in a happy, stable relationship with another ace. Ā And if you happen to ask my mom how Iām doing, sheāll tell youĀ āIāve never seen my baby girl happier.ā
It gets better. Ā But itās up to you to make it that way.
@theonetheonlyjordanelizabeth please read this ā¤ļø I may be sex repulsed but I know that I love you and thats what matters āØ
I know this is already really long and really informative, but I also wanted to add a partnerās perspective. I too, have an ace fiancee. I knew about it before our relationship. I didnāt know it was a thing until I met her, and that was huge to me because I learned something new and also came to understand an old friend a little better.Ā I, on the other hand, am not ace. I am at the complete opposite end of the spectrum. I am pansexual, and she has a hard time I think coming to terms with the fact that I donāt want to make her have sex. Like,Ā āReally?ā you might ask me. Like really is my only reply. I have loved her for a long time now, and being we met over Tumblr and we knew one another before the relationship, sex isnāt a big deal in our relationship. and I can think of at least ten of my friends who would feel the same way right now.Ā
ASEXUALITY IS A REAL THING, LOVING, SWEET ACE RELATIONSHIPS ARE REAL! Just because your partner wants sex doesnāt make you broken. Just because you donāt want sex doesnāt mean you should have to force yourself to do so.Ā
Just be honest with one another, love one another. If a relationship canāt survive a healthy, honest conversation, then it wasnāt a very strong relationship to begin with.Ā TL;DR People who canāt see past sex as aĀ ācoreā in a relationship with someone ace/sex repulsed is an asshole.
I just want to point to this post whenever anyone ever says that asexual people havenāt suffered from discrimination or oppression.

was explaining to my mom on the phone the concept of a cosmic horror and she hit me with the one hit k.o. of "oh you mean like horton hears a who?"
Explain???
me: yeah so basically a cosmic horror is the fear of a godlike being or entity so much bigger than yourself and your perception of the universe that your brain cant possibly comprehend it, often leading to some sort of madness in the stories because of this "break" in your perception of reality because this entity is so incomprehensible to your limited worldview. the concept is credited to h.p. lovecraft because of stuff like cthulu but the guy was also a massive-
my mom, interjecting: ah, so like horton hears a who. i get it.
#wait so like#does the LEGO movie count#they manage to escape into the human world and itās all hazy because they donāt understand#and the people were controlling them the whole time
SURE SURE THE LEGO MOVIE IS A COSMIC HORROR WHY NOT
Cartoon by Steve Sack
Thereās a pretty sobering PSA playing on TV in my state.
Had a family member waiting in the ER with a friend of theirs overhear a man calling around and telling his family goodbye
He was in the early stages of a heart attack (chest pain and the like) and the triage nurse, as kindly and gently as she could, had already said they probably wouldnāt be able to get him back in time.
A man was in the process of dying, right next to life saving equipment and professionals, and too many beds/people were dealing with COVID patients (also in the process of dying) to treat him. My family member had to leave before she found out if he made it or not butā¦.how horridā¦.to be alone and making goodbye phone calls when it should be easy to keep you alive.
There was a news report about the same hospital trying desperately to keep a different man alive in the waiting room and being unable to. Having to wheel his dead body to the morgue after hours of waiting for a bed and equipment that never freed up.
Please go get your vaccine if youāre able, please.
āoh but I could still get covid so whatās the point???ā THIS! This is the point! You will 99.99% stay out of the hospital and let people like these two men not have to make goodbye calls to their families!!

can someone like let the human body know that we don't die at 40 anymore? that i and my family live in suburban Europe and we are not going to die at like 25 from hunting mammoths and i actually do need my teeth and my spine to last for more than 20 fucking years? can someone let evolution know?? our last patch update was "able to digest lactose" (i didn't get it) and like can we speed it up
Please. Knees that stop functioning at 55 are ridiculous if you're going to live 30 more years. How am I supposed to keep dancing?
I swear I saw a tumblr post on here that said āhorses have over 4,000 bonesā and i donāt know where it came from because its totally wrong, they have 205, but what kind of fucked up horse has this person seen out there because Iām absolutely terrified of itĀ
extremely thankful this creature exists slightly to the left of our known reality
it sounds like a bowl of cereal when it walks
just because it has 4000 bones doesnāt mean they all must belong to it. you see where Iām going?
OH NOā¦

I have to reblog the bone horse. I love the bone horse. It haunts my dreams.
