it's always a little funny to me when i get (incredibly nice! lovely!) comments about how compactly i've written a fic because i am constantly trying to figure out how to write longer & more luxuriously, but as an exercise here is my list of "things to do to write shorter"
describe environment only when the pov character has an emotion that is reflected by it. don't describe the emotion itself.
try not to describe thoughts or feelings. if you must, come at them sideways. leave them incomplete as much as possible.
scaffold scenes around dialogue & actions. if a character is not talking or acting, move toward the next time they can be doing one of those things as fast as possible.
kill the part of you that wants to be understood clearly. make the reader draw their own conclusions.
i really appreciate seeing all the posts on my dash recently to the effect of "shutting down conversations about race/gender/minorities in fandom spaces because 'fandom is meant to be fun' is just an excuse to not think critically about the bigoted behaviors you are exhibiting". i hope that this energy carries over into the gaming sphere next pleaaseee

The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! It does piss me off a little bit that serious polyamory representation in media is pretty much non-existent
The fact that no one even seems to care makes feel like I'm going to explode, I'm tired of such a significant part of my life never being represented and often seen as less serious than monogamy.
Its not that it's less serious, it's that functional polyamory challenges the nuclear family dynamic that capitalism has weaponized against the working class. If a household is shown to function with more than only two adults in an exclusive relationship, then it opens the door to what other parts of life might thrive better under community organization.
It also inherently challenges purity culture with multiple varied casual and symbiotically supportive relationships.
Taking both of those into account challenges the Patriarchy itself, and the idea that a singular man should be in charge and rule over his own household like a petty tyrant.
It's only potrayed as unserious or rife with conflict and betrayal in media to keep it defanged and propagandized as a guaranteed failure state. In truth, it very directly challenges several foundational pillars upholding the power structures in our current western society. The status quo therefore cannot allow it to exist or be portrayed as a healthy alternative to monogamy or to the nuclear family model.
Yup—I can think of three recent examples of polyamory taken seriously in fiction off the top of my head, and all three are in works that are actively and explicitly pushing back on those exact power structures in multiple ways.
In the order that I happened to read them:

if i may add on...
i'm in the middle of a sitcom called single parents and it's cutesy and fun, and in one of the episodes, two of the parents think another of their group is being cheated on by his girlfriend with another boy.
but turns out, they're just polyamory! it's not played off as a joke, their relationship is just as valid as the monogamous characters, they mention a poly dating site, and they even talk about honesty and communication - **inspiring the monogamous characters to communicate better in their own relationship!!!** i'm not even poly and that put a huge smile on my face :')
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
