I need to talk about how important Elizabeth's character, the leaf scene, and the relationship between her and the creature is to me, as someone who is neurodivergent and grew up thinking I could never find someone who truly understood me, and is now happily surrounded by people who do.
I can't expand on this right now because my brain is about ready to combust and I probably should go to sleep but what I need to say is that, after seeing the movie three times with different people and seeing varying opinions on it, I've reached my conclusion.
The creature and Elizabeth's scene with the leaf is not a woman babying a neurodivergent coded character. It's two neurodivergent characters finding eachother and meeting and having that wonderful moment where it clicks that "oh. Here's someone like me. Here's someone who understands me".
Elizabeth saying "A leaf? For me? Thank you" And bringing it into the light and saying "it's beautiful isn't it?" And bringing his fingers to her throat to show him the vibrations the sound makes. That's all her unmasking. That's her being just as marvelled about it all as he is.
Anyway I can't explain it with the coherence it deserves right now but I hope it makes sense. I'll probably come back to this again later.
