My momโs Czech and when she married she took my fatherโs last name, and she added the suffix โovaโ as is traditional in a few Slavic countries. Now, kid me hated that because that suffix indicates ownership so I go by the masculine version of that last name.
But then in project Hail Mary of all things I hear about the Petrova line and Iโm just floored, I get it. Itโs so common to name discoveries with last names and this was my first time hearing one that every time it was spoken it was clear that it was named after a woman, a man could never have the last name Petrova. All of a sudden the suffix which felt like it meant I was owned by my father or husband transformed at the very least to me into a symbol of fictional scientist Irena Petrovaโs ownership of her own discovery
I am insane in the membrane over transformers right now. Like I'm talking 80% of the time either thinking about transformers, doing something transformers related, or thinking "this is nice but I wish it was about transformers".
I can't even sincerely say "someone come save me" because I haven't had a good, all-encompassing fixation like this in a while and it's making my brain insanely happy.

Thatโs an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people donโt know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, weโve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless theyโre talking about political theory and philosophy, so itโs easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. Itโs the difference between โyouโre a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell itโ and โyouโre Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.โ There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
I scrolled past this and like two posts later saw this absolutely perfect example of the way people use โcapitalismโ completely divorced from its meaning.
People have been dangerously adulterating their products to make a bigger profit for THOUSANDS of YEARS. Rome famously had problems with people selling counterfeit bread and doctored wine.
Capitalism might make these problems worse by concentrating power in the hands of fewer and larger corporations, but ultimately the problem vastly predates actual capitalism. Unscrupulous sellers have been endangering and ripping off their customers since there was such a thing as a marketplace, and governments have been regulating the market for almost as long.

i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you canโt do that if your healthcare is tied to your job

Making a shitty one-page RPG called Oh Shit Itโs the Killer. The premise is simple: youโre a high schooler spending the weekend in the woods with your besties. The Killer is there also. He is trying to the Kill you
I say shitty not to demean the quality of my work but because itโs less an exercise in good game design and more an attempt to induce paranoid internal conflict that turns into murder (in game of course). It has like three mechanics and one of them actively encourages you to murder the other PCs
I put like three braincells into this, so if thereโs anything about it that outright sucks, uh. Sorry not sorry, L + ratio + letโs use the 1-page restriction as an excuse for any unfun mechanics

Rocky chitters with amusement. โAcceptable.โ

Rocky draws back, like heโs taken offense. โI have friends. Coworkers. But different.โ

โThis worries you,โ Rocky says.
โAdrian is your mate,โ Grace points out. โIโm not your mate.โ
โCorrect. You are not. You do not like to be a mate.โ
Grace isnโt sure how to respond to that, so he ignores it.
โIโm your friend,โ Grace says.ย
Rocky hesitates, for a second. โ...Correct.โ
โLike your coworkers.โ
โNo.โ
Grace sighs, rubbing his hand across his face. Okay, maybe thatโs fair. Itโs not like he felt about any of his coworkers like he feels about Rocky.
โBest friend,โ Grace amends. โYouโre my best friend, too.โ
Rocky hums. โAcceptable.โ
โJust acceptable? Now you are offending me. Can you just explain?โ
This makes Rocky fall silent for a minute longer than usual. Grace is half-ready to apologize and to say letโs move on and to retype his own name without the superfluous my.ย
โThe Earth โbest friendโ is not strong enough,โ Rocky says finally. โIt does not translate this way.โ
Grace runs his fingers through his hair, a little nervous, for some reason. โOkay.โ
โIt isโฆโ Rocky pauses. He has to pause more often, now that theyโre not using the translator, to simplify his language. โIt means that I am not Rocky without my Grace. You are part ofโฆ of the whole. When I wake up, I think of you. When I work. When I eat. When I think I am going to die.โ
Rocky speaks slowly, but itโs still a lot of Eridian for Grace to grasp all at once. Even as he works out the sentences in his head, he can feel hot tears rising in his eyes.
โIt means that when you are sick, I am sick,โ Rocky continues. โAnd it means I will take care of you, because taking care of you is taking care of myself.โ
Grace bunches up his sleeve, wiping it across his face, blinking furiously.
Rockyโs voice is soft. โSo Grace is part of Rocky. Grace is like a cell. You see? My Grace.โย
Grace is quiet, for a moment, trying to get himself together. When he speaks, his voice is shaky.
โ...Oh.โ
Rocky hums, pressing his carapace gently against Graceโs arm. โYou are leaking. Does this make you sad?โ
Grace shakes his head, sniffing, crossing his arms across his knees and resting his chin on his sleeves. โNot at all.โ
โGood, good.โ
โI feel like that,โ Grace mumbles. โJust like that. Just exactlyโexactly like that.โ
โAbout your old mate?โ
โDonโt act stupid. You know Iโm talking about you.โ
Rocky hums, burrowing closer. Grace curls one arm around his carapace. Thatโs not enough, so he leans over, dropping his head down so his forehead presses against the xenonite.ย
โMy Rocky,โ Grace whispers in English.ย
โMy Grace,โ Rocky echoes in Eridian. Grace can recognize the note at the start. He will add it when he plays Rockyโs name.ย
โHow long have you called me that?โ Grace asks. โMustโve been a while. I didnโt notice it change.โ
โLong time,โ Rocky agrees. โLong, long time.โ
