"Come on, this isn't funny." "I'm not joking. It's locked."
"Is that the only tent we have?"
"There's only one bed." "Well, darlin', I'm not sleeping on the floor, so I guess we'll have to share."
"I'm your bodyguard. It's in the job description to protect you at all times." "Well, could you at least 'protect' me from over there?"
"You have got to be kidding me. I have to share a room with you."
"What do you mean there's only one sleeping bag? You had one job."
"Quit following me!" "I was hired to follow you, princess, better get used to it."
"What the hell is that noise?" "Uh, yeah, slight problem. We're out of gas."
"Where are you going? We're in the middle of nowhere!" "Yeah! And whose fault is that?"
"Look around, love. In case you hadn't noticed we're snowed in. So unless you plan to freeze to death, we'll have to find a way to keep each other warm."
"I may be stuck with you, but I don't have to like it."
"Is now a bad time to tell you I'm claustrophobic?"
"Your heart's racing. Now, I know being pressed up against me is exhilerating and all, but I'm trying to concentrate on picking this lock."
"What are you? Afraid?"
"Uh. Slight problem. We're trapped."
"Well, which way, smartass?" "Uh. We might be lost."
I've made a sheet of quick info and tips on drawing medieval european plate armour. You can view it on a screen or print it as a leaflet to keep in your sketchbook â
i have just stumbled upon the most beautiful public document i have ever laid eyes on. this also goes for anyone whose pastimes include any sort of character creation. may i present, the HOLY GRAIL:
this wonderful 88-page piece has step by step breakdowns of how names work in different cultures! i needed to know how to name a Muslim character it has already helped me SO MUCH and iâve known about it for all of 15 minutes!! i am thoroughly amazed and i just needed to share with you guysÂ
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itâs from a shield. If itâs hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnât there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as thereâs no scale bar and itâs all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. Iâve only just started playing with it but itâs SO FUN.
I do think this could be useful for writers! ...Caveat, if you're going to use this for making a map for anything published (digital or paper, even if it's only in a fanfic archive or whatever), please, please credit the creator and their program as how you made that map! The more ways information like this gets out there, the more useful it'll be to other writers, roleplaying game DMs/GMs, creators, etc.
One of my favourites for mapping plates, biomes, etc is Tectonics.js. If you're familiar with how tectonics shape a planet, you can guess where the features go by toggling plates, crust thickness, etc. Between Mapgen4 and Tectonics.js, we've got some pretty sweet tools at our disposal.

Worldbuilding pasta's series, An Apple Pie from Scratch also check their resources page!
R/worldbuilding's Reading List. Also check out their collected resources link. This basic geology guide from 11 years ago is still nice.
Creating an Earth-Like Planet, and The Climate Cookbook (aka Geoff's Climate Cookbook) technically the climate cookbook is a part of Creating an Earth like Planet I think.
Related: Worldbuilding Workshop's "Working Out Climates Using Geoffâs Climate Cookbook." Which goes through using the resource in order to map make. Also just the Worldbuilding Workshop in General.

Also I would recommend looking into Landscape Archaeology as well! That's because Landscape archeology is basically adding the social/cultural layer on top of all that geology and geography. Environments change when communities live in them, and communities likewise adapt to various environments.
This is a short free introduction to the concept: "Notes on Landscape Archaeology." To summarize, Landscape archaeology sort of like...studies the relation of people to places/spaces (that is, landscapes) in time.
Also this paper [An Archeology of Landscapes] breaks down/introduces the key concepts that I learned which is first that you can form the "construct paradigm" of a landscape from settlement ecology,
ritual landscapes, and ethnic landscapes.
And then the highlights of their summary of what constitutes defining a landscape:
Landscapes are not synonymous with natural environments. Landscapes
are synthetic (Jackson, 1984, p. 156), with cultural systems structuring and
organizing peoplesâ interactions with their natural environments ...
Landscapes are worlds of cultural product ... Through their daily activities, beliefs, and values, communities transform
physical spaces into meaningful places. ...
Landscapes are the arena for all of a communityâs activities. Thus landscapes not only are constructs of human populations but they also are the
milieu in which those populations survive and sustain themselves. A landscapeâs domain involves patterning in both within-place and between-place
contexts ...
Landscapes are dynamic constructions, with each community and each
generation imposing its own cognitive map on an anthropogenic world of interconnected morphology, arrangement, and coherent meaning ...
Basically a "landscape" is made by a community living in an environment. Once you have a geological environment that makes sense, landscape archaeology is like... Basically how I feel confident knowing where trade routes would be on a map, where there are areas of continual high conflict, what kinds of agriculture exists where, etc. once the geological stuff is hammered out, it's like...I know how that would influence the local cultures and vice versa. At that point, it's easy to start marking the natural borders, settlements, trade/port cities, and even strategic fortresses. If you have properly put rivers on a map, then marking your port cities is effortless, basically.
Also:
This course syllabus for a Landscape Archaeology class is freely accessible. It includes an online resources page.
Place, Landscape, and Environment: Anthropological Archaeology in 2009
(Landscape Biographies is open access, as is Landscape Archaeology between Art and Science: From a Multi- to an Interdisciplinary Approach. But I wouldn't try to read every essay.)
If you are like me and find it helpful to have video reference for a process/activity in addition to a written guide, Artifexian is a YouTube channel that does a LOT of world building stuff and specifically he's in the process of creating a world following a lot of Worldbuilding Pasta's methodology!

Sorry for anyone who's been reading this whole time. We didn't mean to make you wait a decade for the next chapter!
⧠Broken ribs suck. You donât just âwalk it off.â Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries wonât be doing heroic sprints.
⧠Concussions arenât instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but theyâre not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
⧠Blood loss is sneaky. Itâs not just about dramatic pools of blood. Itâs dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
⧠Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fightâs over. That âI didnât realize I was bleeding until laterâ trope? Very real.
⧠Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
⧠Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, itâs not just a cool scar later.
⧠Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters canât keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. Theyâre basically fighting one-armed until itâs fixed.
⧠Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
⧠Stitches arenât magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. Theyâre not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
⧠Scars tell stories. Some fade, some donât. Some stay sensitive forever. Donât forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
Ideas for background court drama in your fictional monarchy for flavor or humor:
King did not name his son as his heir because his son is an idiot. Said idiot son keeps trying to kill his cousin or uncle that was named as heir but keeps failing because heâs not good at this. Everyone is annoyed at the king for not imprisoning him
New political marriage in the court and the new spouse from outside the kingdom brought a chef with them that cooks weird
Some religious authority and the king keep going to war with each other and making up again like an on again off again toxic couple
Everyone thinks that one of the ladies in waiting got pregnant out of wedlock but she doesnât even look pregnant and she keeps being like guys itâs been ten months
Someone important in the court keeps throwing really big parties that they canât afford and people lower down on the ladder keep trying to find ways to stop them without technically disobeying them
Monks come complaining to the king that theyâre not being fed enough when in fact they usually eat better than the king does
One of the servants overheard something really embarrassing and they really wanna tell someone so theyâve gotta figure out how to do that without getting in trouble
One of the members of the royal family has gotten obsessed with something (fashion trend, food, etc.) that the rest of the court hates but they have to pretend to like it or theyâll get in trouble
The queen mother (kingâs mom) keeps annoyingly trying to interfere with how things are going and the king and the new queen keep running away and hiding whenever they hear her coming and itâs getting ridiculous
The king has not named an heir yet and everyone even slightly eligible for the throne keeps quietly trying to kill each other in the background while the king doesnât notice and obliviously drinks beer and reads his newspaper
hey friends, i've found myself talking about dialogue grammar a lot as i do more and more beta'ing, so figured it'd be helpful to share more broadly :)
1. Dialogue + Tag (same sentence):
"I missed you," he said.
"I missed you," Will said.
Use a comma inside the quotation marks.
Don't capitalize the dialogue tag unless it starts with a name.
2. Dialogue + Action (separate sentence):
"I missed you." He stepped closer.
Use a period inside the quotation marks.
The action isn't a dialogue tag, so it stands as its own sentence.
3. Dialogue Split in Two (same sentence continues):
"I think," he murmured, "that you should stay."
"I think that," he murmured, "Will should stay."
Use a comma before closing the quotation mark and after the tag.
Don't capitalize the second part unless it's a name or proper noun.
4. Dialogue Split in Two (separate sentences):
"You're here," he said. "I wasn't sure you'd come."
Use a period after the tag, because the next quote is a new sentence.
Capitalize the new sentence of dialogue.
5. Tag + complete sentence of dialogue:
He released a breath before answering, "Always."
Use a comma after the tag.
Capitalize the complete sentence of dialogue.
6. Questions & Exclamations:
"Are you serious?" he asked.
"Don't touch me!" he snapped.
Keep the ? or ! inside the quotes.
Follow with a lowercase tag unless it starts with a name.
Day 5 of @fluffyjuly - Stargazing - "Mind if I join you?"
Later than I wanted it to be but I did finish something! Trying to get back into the swing of writing after like... a decade is hard.
_________
Finally, it was quiet. It had been several days of nearly nonstop fighting and Obi-Wan ached everywhere. They'd won and even managed it with only minimal losses, but it had been exhausting. He was lucky that he was just sore and bruised, about half the clones were getting patched up in some way and he'd left Anakin in the medical tent getting a slice on his leg patched up. It was crowded enough in there that he'd managed to grab some anti-inflammatories and escape.
The sun was setting as Obi-Wan had slipped out of their main camp and made his way up a hill hoping to meditate. His body was exhausted but he was still feeling wired and he needed to calm his mind. He'd found a relatively flat boulder to meditate on and managed to settle his mind somewhat as darkness settled over the camp and the stars came out above him. He was contemplating going back into the camp to get some dinner when he heard movement behind him.
Anakin was coming over the edge of the hill carrying a bundle with him "I was wondering where you wandered off to Obi-Wan. Mind if I join you?"
"Not at all, but you didn't need to come up here just for me," Obi-Wan glanced down to inspect Anakin's leg "Especially injured." He frowned. "I just needed some peace after all that."
Anakin just laughed, "It was barely a scratch and it's only a bit sore. Bacta will take care of it and I'll be fine." He started unwrapping the bundle in his arms and handed Obi-Wan a still warm container, "Dinner."
Obi-Wan blinked up at him in surprise, "Thank you, dear." He opened the container as he watched Anakin unwrap a second container and gently shake out the blanket he'd wrapped them in. "Oh, that's a good idea."
"Yeah I figured we both deserved to be more comfortable." A small pillow fell out of the bundle, "When I saw you up here I thought it might even be nice to sleep up here in the fresh air now that the fighting is over and we just need to handle clean up and packing up tomorrow." Anakin put the blanket down on the ground and folded himself down onto it "Plus I thought the privacy might be nice" he added as he glanced up a Obi-Wan through his eyelashes.
Pausing in his meal to laugh softly and raised an eyebrow, "I'm afraid I don't have much energy left and I'm certainly not going to let you pull at your injury." He started eating his food again as Anakin rolled his eyes at him.
"Not like that, I know how private you can be by now." Anakin dug into his meal, "I just meant not having anyone around to watch us might be nice."
Obi-Wan closed up his now empty container and slid down from his meditation spot to join Anakin on the blanket, "Well that is certainly true." He reached for the pillow and settled it near the edge of the blanket. He squeezed Anakin's thigh gently above his bandage and leaned over to brush a kiss across his cheek between bites of food. "Just as I know how much attention you'd prefer to have regardless of privacy by now. I do appreciate your patience and efforts at propriety." He pressed a gentle kiss to Anakin's shoulder and laid back on the blanket to settle his head on the pillow, he opened his arms slightly and added, "Do join me when you're finished, the stars are lovely tonight."
It was only a few moments more before he heard the second container put aside and Obi-Wan's view of the stars was blocked by curls and then blue eyes as Anakin leaned over him. "Stars? Really?" He pouted.
Obi-Wan just smiled up at him as he slid his hand into Anakin's curls to pull him down and brush their lips together, "Of course they're not as lovely as you, darling." He pressed their lips together more firmly. "Come down here and get more comfortable." Anakin shifted down to lay in Obi-Wan's open arms and nuzzled into Obi-Wan's neck as they wrapped their arms around each other. Obi-Wan pressed a kiss to his temple, then his cheekbone, and as Anakin raised his head again he followed the path back to his lips. They exchanged soft kisses under the stars for long minutes as Obi-Wan ran his fingers through Anakin's hair and held them close together.
Anakin was slightly flushed when he reluctantly pulled away from the kisses with a yawn, "I guess we do both actually need to rest." After one more soft kiss, Anakin scooted down to settle his head on Obi-Wan's shoulder, "They're more beautiful to look at when I'm not stuck traveling through them for days on end."
Obi-Wan ruffled his hair and laughed, "I can definitely agree with that. It's not a bad view to fall asleep to." He pulled the trailing edge of the blanket up over Anakin's shoulders and settled in to sleep.
As he tucked himself closer he heard Anakin's reply, "Neither are you." and fell asleep with a smile on his face.

The most obnoxious thing my writing teacher taught me every story needed, that I absolutely loathed studying in the moment and that only later, after months of resisting and fighting realized she was right, was something called the causal chain.
Simply put, the causal chain is the linked cause-and-effect that must logically connect every event, reaction, and beat that takes place in your story to the ones before and after.
The Causal Chain is exhausting to go through. It is infuriating when someone points out that an event or a character beat comes out of nowhere, unmoored from events around it.
It is profoundly necessary to learn and include because a cause-and-effect chain is what allows readers to follow your story logically which means they can start anticipating what happens next, which is what is required for a writer to be able to build suspense and cognitively engage the audience, to surprise them, and to not infuriate them with random coincidences that hurt or help the characters in order to clumsily advance the author's goals.
By all means, write your story as you want to write it in the first draft, and don't worry about this principle too much. This is an editing tool, not a first draft tool. But one of the first things you should do when retroactively begin preparing your story to be read by others is going step by step through each event and confirming that a previous event leads to it and that subsequent events are impacted by it on the page.
When your character is standing knee-deep in literal or metaphorical shit with a weapon in one hand and their last hope of surviving evaporating around them, and theyâre wondering how their simple smuggling job/adulthood ritual/simple morning in an ordinary village led to ALL OF THIS, both they and the reader need to be able to backtrack through every single choice, mishap, attempt at fixing earlier problems and panicky flight or fib led them unerringly to this moment. That chain cannot have breaks in it, or you lose the whole impact.Â
Don't worry, it's just a scratch. - @juneofdoom Day 2
Edgin Jarvis/Xenk Yendar Rating: T Word Count: 4240
After an exhausting quest when Xenk's exhausted his abilities, Edgin has terrible enough luck that he gets hurt after the quest is done when Bandits sneak up on them on their way home. Maybe getting poisoned is worth it though.
2. âIâm worried about you.â  | InfectionPoisoning | Protective | Confession
Every time they got into a scrape like this, Ed was eternally grateful that Kira was safe at home and studying instead of getting into trouble with them. As he ducked behind a boulder he couldn't help the thoughts that went through his head. Thoughts like "How does this always happen to us?" "I really shouldn't have put my sword down while we were eating." and "How did I justify bringing Kira along on things like this for so long??" He peeked around the edge of the boulder and an arrow went flying right past his face.
The worst part about this whole situation is that since they were still riding high as the Heroes of Neverwinter, Xenk had convinced them to help more for friendship than any real profit and they had actually been done their quest. Cursed object acquired and safely in Xenk's pack and on their way back home tired and a bit bruised but having felt pretty successful and not even minding the lack of payout. Not even an hour ago the only thing he'd had to complain about was exhausting what magic he had and that he was hungry.
The bandits had appeared right as they were finishing their meal and attacked thinking (not quite rightly) that a group such as theirs would have something worth stealing and that they could surprise them. They didn't even have any valuables for them to take! And the cursed object in question was dangerous but didn't even look valuable, it was just a stone. He could hear the clang of metal getting closer and regretted again that he'd chosen comfort over keeping his weapon close. He tried to listen closely to see if he could tell if it was Xenk's sword or Holga's axe coming closer and he pulled his lute off his back, at least he hadn't been dumb enough to put everything down.
The moment he saw the edge of Xenk's armor coming around the boulder he pressed himself tightly against it and lifted his lute. As Xenk backed up from the three bandits who'd managed to team up against him, he acknowledged Ed with a quick glance to his eyes then his lute and turned slightly to make sure their enemies kept their eyes on only him. As soon as all three bandits cleared the boulder, Ed swung his lute and the nearest one hit the ground unconscious. The distraction was just enough to give Xenk the advantage and the other two hit the ground soon after. "Wow, you really must be as tired as I am."
Xenk stared at him for a moment and Ed would swear he saw the slightest eyeroll, "it was a rather exhausting morning. I'll admit I was hoping for a short nap after our meal and was not expecting to deal with an attack."
"A nap sounds wonderful. Okay, how do we end this so we can nap, get that rock where it belongs, and head home?" Ed felt himself yanked out of the way of another arrow just as he tried to look around the side of the boulder again.
Xenk quietly sighed and frowned at him, "We have not yet eliminated the archer. Holga stayed near the fire and is holding her own. We should stop the archer and then the rest will be easily dealt with." He definitely looked surprisingly tired.
"Well my sword is near Holga and the fire, so I don't think I'm much good there. But he keeps shooting this way so...I can definitely distract him."
Xenk murmured quietly, "Yes, you are certainly distracting." already looking around the other side of the boulder. Ed couldn't have heard that right. "I will go this way, wait until I am closer and the try to be just visible." Ed nodded and stuck his lute out to the side to make sure the archer's eyes were on the wrong side of the boulder while Xenk made his approach.
He went to the other side of the boulder where he could see Xenk disappear into the edge of the woods to get closer to the archer. He glanced to the side and saw Holga with three of the bandits on the ground around her and three more attacking her. He watched her flip one of them almost directly into their fire and then glanced back toward the archer to see the glimmer of Xenk's armor through the edge of the woods nearby so he moved to the other side of the boulder and quickly slid out, pretending to think it was safe and moved back behind it as fast as he could, just as he saw an arrow come straight for him. The arrow didn't miss him this time, it just barely grazed his bicep, tearing through his shirt and leaving a narrow line of blood. In the seconds where he'd had a clear view, Xenk had been right behind the archer and he'd seen Holga dispatch the last two bandits, totally worth a scrape.
He heard Holga grunt like she was moving something heavy, "Ed! You can come out now!" Oh, she'd moved the bandit off of the fire. "Here," she shoved the hilt of his shortsword into his hand "Stop leaving this places." She went looked him over and gave him a gentle (for Holga) shove towards his bag "Better clean that."
Ed put his sword away and reached for his bag to pull out a small roll of bandages. "What requires cleaning?" He heard Xenk ask. When Ed turned back towards them he glanced as the red staining his sleeve, "Oh, you're injured. You were meant to distract, not become a target." He glanced down at his hands, "I can heal you once I get some rest."
"Don't worry, it's just a scratch." He undid his shirt so he could bare his arm, kind of glad he'd taken off his jacket and left it next to his sword earlier even if it would have offered a little extra protection. The cut wasn't too deep, he wet the edge of the bandage to wipe it clean and then realized wrapping it one handed might be difficult. Holga had already walked back towards the bandit's bodies to search for anything useful but when he looked up Xenk was watching him. "Xenk, it's really not that bad."
Xenk blinked and refocused and it occurred to Ed that Xenk had been staring at his chest and not his arm. He really must be tired. "Let me assist you." He said as he reached for the bandages. He started unwinding the roll and reached for Ed's arm. "I really did not mean for you to get hurt." he continued quietly.
"I know. Don't worry too much." Xenk's warm fingers pulled gently on his arm to stretch it out so that he could wind the bandages around his bicep. "It's not even that deep."
Xenk tied off the end of the bandage, "I always worry about you, my friend."
Ed laughed lightly, "Well, I am the kind of guy that gets myself into situations." Xenk smiled slightly and shook his head at him.
"C'mon you two. If you're all fixed up then we should get out of here in case these guys have friends that come looking for them." Holga was shoving some coins into her pouch and had a small bag in her hand that she tossed at Ed. "Let's go."
Wednesday! Was that a test!? - June of Doom - Day 1
I'm been trying to get myself back to writing and the @juneofdoom prompt list crossed my dash so... I guess I'll Try at least some prompts and see where it goes. This turned out a lot less Doom like and a lot more affectionate than expected.
Wednesday Addams/Enid Sinclair Rating: T Words <1k
Summary: Enid wakes up tied up somewhere she doesn't know and gets herself out of trouble.
Prompt 1. âWhere am I?â        | Slurred Speech | Duct Tape | Darkness
When Enid woke up she couldn't tell where he was, everything felt fuzzy and her head hurt a little, and even though her eyes were open she couldn't see anything around her. She was laying on her side on something cool and very solid and when she tried to move she realized her hands were bound with something thick and a little bit sticky and it felt like her feet were bound together the same way.
She let out a big sigh, Wednesday had been worrying (in her own way) at her for weeks, convinced that some creepy stalker was out to get her and that because of that Enid, herself, was in danger too. She'd been bullied into taking extra precautions on trips into Jericho and not been allowed to go anywhere alone. Every time she'd tried, Wednesday and appeared grumpily beside her. The protectiveness was nice and usually gave Enid the warm fuzzies just thinking about it, but she hadn't really thought the worry was actually warranted.
Until now.
She remembered dinner, she remembered at least starting to walk back to their room alone since Wednesday had been snarking at Bianca and she had wanted to get started on paper due at the end of the week. Well, Wednesday would probably be looking for her by now, but she'd probably be both smug and mad to be right.
"Okay Enid, get up, figure this out." she mumbled to herself and tried to rock herself upright. Maybe she could get herself out of this or figure out some clues if this really was because of the stalker Wednesday was worried about. "Okay, where am I?" She tried to take deep sniff and coughed at the dust in the air. Wherever she was, it smelled a little musty, very dusty, and kind like she was surrounded by sand and dirt. Her coughs didn't echo much so it must have been somewhere small even if she hadn't hit a wall sitting up. She tried to listen and could hear a lot of nature sounds, so wherever she was there had to be a door or window that led outside close by.
Her head was starting to clear, so she wiggled her fingers to make sure they still had feeling and reached for her feet in the dark to feel what was around them. Her hands skimmed over smooth wide....tape? She was pretty sure it was duct tape. Whoever had bonked her on the head, tied her up, and dropped her here hadn't really thought through things or hadn't done their research. She rolled her eyes a little as she slipped her claws out to slice through the tape around her ankles and peeled it off. "Well whoever did this is just dumb." She turned twisted her fingers back to slice part of the tape over her wrists and used her teeth to tear the rest off.
She huffed as she stood up, wobbling a little and smacking into a wall that had been just out of her reach before with a small thunk. "I can't believe I was caught by surprise by someone who doesn't even know how to tie up a werewolf!, ugh! Wednesday is going to be so disappointed in me." She pouted as she took another deep breath, trying not to cough this time and caught the direction of where it smelled like the air was a little fresher. She skimmed her fingers lightly along the wall as she walked forward to find a break in the wall that felt like a door, moved her hands down until she found the handle and very quietly got it open so she could peek out of the door.
She didn't see anyone, so she opened it more fully to look around...... and saw Wednesday! Holding a stopwatch! "Wednesday what...!?!?"
Wednesday was watching her with her usually unblinking dark eyes, "I'm not disappointed." Enid blushed, "You actually got yourself out of there without panicking once. I'm actually kind of proud."
"Ohmygod, Wednesday! Was that a test!?" Enid was still blushing and covered her face with her hands.
"Just a little one." When she moved her hands to give a questioning look, Wednesday continued explaining, "I'm more worried about you panicking too much to get out of a situation then your ability to actually get out. You did a good job. Except for the talking to yourself before knowing if someone was around."
"Did you really just....?" Enid looked around, they were still on school grounds at least. It looked like Wednesday had dropped her in an old gardening shed.
"Yes." Wednesday frowned deeper than usual. "I need you to be safe."
Enid sighed, "We really have to work on how you show your affection, you know." Wednesday side-eyed her as they started walking back to their room. "Don't give me that look, I've got you mostly figured out by now."
Wednesday glanced ahead again before flicking her eyes back over quickly and avoiding eye contact again, "At least you know it's affection."
Enid rubbed her head where it was sore, "I'd definitely rather just have some kisses or something."
Wednesday reached for her hand and intertwined their fingers, "That can be arranged."
Enid stumbled, staring from Wednesday's face down to her hand in her own. "What? .....oh!." Well, if it was like that then they'd better walk faster. She started tugging Wednesday along the walkway faster and heard a very faint laugh. She grinned, she was going to make Wednesday kiss her head better first, and then she was going to get so many more kisses.

Just One Cookbook: recipe site that centers on Japanese cuisine. Lots of different recipes to browse, plenty of inspiration so youâre not just âramen and sushiâÂ
This comparing heights page: gives you a visual on height differences between characters
A page on the colors of bruises+healing stages: well just that. there you go. describe your bruises properly
McCormick Science Institute: yes this is a real thing. the site shows off research on spices and gives the history on them. be historically accurate or just indulge in mindless fascination. boost your restaurant au with it
A Glossary of Astronomy Terms: to pepper in that sweet terminology for your astrophysics major college au needs
Cocktail Flow: a site with a variety of cocktails thatâs pretty easy to navigate and offers photos of the drinks. You can sort by themes, strengths, type and base. My only real annoyance with this site is that the drinks are sometimes sorted into ~masculine~ and ~feminine~ but ehhhh. Itâs great otherwise.
Tie-A-Tie: a site centered around ties, obviously. I stumbled upon it while researching tie fabrics but thereâs a lot more to look at. It offers insight into dress code for events, tells you how to tie your ties, and has a section on the often forgotten about tie accessories
Types of High Heels: A page describing twenty five different types of high heels. It gives a description and pictures. Shake it up from just âstilettos and kitten heelsâ
Random Job Generator: Exactly as it says. The site offer more generators like characters, plots, or town names.
Glossary of Hosiery Terms: Figure out what is what on a pair of stockings.
Menâs Dress Shoe Guide: A quick guide describing the eight most common types of menâs dress shoes. Pics included.
Types of Womenâs Coats: Descriptions and pics of various different types of coats.
The Procgen Mansion Generator produces large three-dee dwellings to toy with your imagination, offering various architectural styles and other options. Each mansion even comes with floorplans:

Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:
Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.
Youâre supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.
When rich/important people forget your name and theyâre drunk, they usually just tell you that they donât remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they donât look silly.
A good way to indicate you donât want to shake someoneâs hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if youâre a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely canât shift the glass to another hand and then shake)
Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally donât press lips to cheeks, itâs more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a womanâs makeup)
The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of menâs clothing.
Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. Theyâre meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.
Members of the press generally arenât allowed to freely circulate at nicer galas/events without a very good reason. When they do, they need to identify themselves before talking with someone.
As someone who spent over a decade catering luxury events, let me add some back of house info:
These events are almost always open bar. They're not trying to make their money back on alcohol. They want you to drink and eat and donate generously.
If there are cocktails, there will be at most two on offer, pre-made in large tubs. You cannot order a different version, it is what it is.
There are two types of events: cocktail style or seated. The first includes roaming hors d'oeuvres or a fancy buffet with tiny plates called a grazing station. For a long night, the roaming food will get a little bigger throughout the evening and have a 'main' at some point based around a protein.
A seated event will usually be more structured and may include multiple courses. Silver service is not in vogue anymore. You are likely to get either alternating meals brought to you like at a wedding, or served banquet style. A good caterer can get a plate to everyone in a 300 person event in about three minutes.
Drunk people are the same no matter how expensive their suits. They still laugh too loud, spill their drinks and slip on the dance floor. They are usually less embarrassed about doing coke in the bathrooms.
A full scale event that starts at 6pm will have staff arriving at noon to begin setup. Earlier if there's a light show or pyrotechnics. Typically venues don't just have 30 tables and three hundred chairs lying around, let alone table cloths, chair covers, etc. It's all rented and brought in on the day. Bands and DJs will be running audio tests in the background throughout.
Most heritage buildings that host these things, like museums and manor houses, aren't really designed for them. They might put down mats so you're not walking in stilettos over two hundred year old wooden floors, the kitchens are weirdly far away, and there are not enough taps. There is never anywhere for staff to sit, so if you open the wrong door you might find half a dozen waiters sitting on upturned milk crates in a room full of million dollar paintings, eating the left over bread.
Really old buildings don't have enough bathrooms, which means the staff will be sharing with the guests.
Clean up starts the second the event ends, if not sooner. Unattended glasses will start to disappear first, then table decorations. When the timer ticks over, the lights come back on and exhausted staff strip the tables, pack up dirty glasses and unopened wine bottles and have to Tetris it all into the back of a van. The venue is booked for that day only, so everything has to be gone before anyone can go home. A large event that finishes at midnight might take until 3am to be cleared away.
These are very long and physically demanding nights for anyone working them. The staff all get to know each other, and will absolutely notice someone trying to sneak in wearing a borrowed uniform. They are not being paid enough to care.
I want to write a book called âyour character dies in the woodsâ that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.
I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.
Then she had a âmiserableâ 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
This book already exists, sort of! Or at least, itâs a biology textbook but I bought it for writing purposes:
It starts with a chapter about freezing to death, and it is without a doubt the scariest thing Iâve read in years (and I read a lot of horror fiction).
