"The world's first trillionaire murders 9.4 million people" would be a more appropriate headline.

Rolling Homes: Handmade Houses on Wheels by Jane Lidz (1979)
art allows us to ask important questions, such as "what if an apple core was a small girl?"
i'll hopefully be printing a green apple version soon, because there are some styling & faceup choices i want to try with this sculpt. also i couldn't decide what to do with her mouth, so version 1.0 is mouthless, but i want to give the next one a cute grin.
baby girl I don't know what that acronym means. it would be so sexy of you to write out that piece of media's name in its entirety. Just the one time for momma please.
Mundane America. Broken pole with rope and an American Flag. Cincinnati, Ohio.
Wait. Wait.
Wait.
I know that telephone pole.
I know that telephone pole intimately because I’m the one who broke it.
Thats the pole next to Sycamore Jr. High, in between the jr high school and Pipkins, where I had my second car accident. A woman t-boned my car and drove me into that pole in 2008 and it took them years to actually take it down.
That black metal pole you see just beyond the broken phone pole is a “Now Leaving/Welcome To Blue Ash, Ohio” sign, visible at 5520 Cooper Road on google maps.
(the flag is there, btw, because its the starting point for the Blue Ash/Montgomery July 4th parade.)
The internet is so staggeringly immense that I can’t help but be disproportionately delighted when things like this happen.

A Girl with a Cat (Robert Braithwaite Martineau, 1860)
when swimming’s so easy you start doing bonus quests now
This is a superb example of why she's so dominant though. Besides the fact that she works her ass of to be, because she does. Economy of movement is a big damned deal in endurance sports. Ledecky is far and away the best distance swimmer in the world because of how precise her movement is. There is zero wasted motion and nothing shows that more clearly than this.
I can't get over how smooth her paddling is, there's barely a ripple when her hands enter the water
apologies to anyone who followed me for tma. cow studies :) ❤️
“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)

On this day, 11 June 1925, immigrant miner William Davis was shot in the heart and killed by company police in Nova Scotia, Canada during one of many District 26 United Mine Workers of America strikes against the British Empire Steel Corporation (BESCO), one of the largest corporations in Canada at the time. The company had cut off company credit at company stores on 2 March, then cut off the town’s water supply and electricity on 4 June. As many as 3,000 miners went to persuade the workers in control of the water and electricity to support the strike, but the police charged the crowd, firing 300 shots and injuring many. In the following weeks, the strikers attacked company stores to such an extent that almost 2,000 soliders were deployed. Eventually, though, the company would give up in November, never again to operate company stores, housing, or other services. Davis’ funeral was held on 14 June with 5,000 mourners in attendance. This day is annually observed as Davis Day (aka: Miners’ Memorial Day) in coal mining communities in Nova Scotia. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1143682925816856/?type=3
