it doesn’t have to be trauma related. you can draw gore. it’s horror. who gives a shit.

the first reply is also despicable. “woah woah, no see, here’s their registered credentials for drawing [totally harmless and common thing]. it’s not like they’re a nasty-wasty ~adult~, which we all know are all evil and predatory! this post was totally understandable but aimed at the wrong target this time.”

A couple weeks ago I’m going to get lunch and as I open the fridge, my mother attempts to communicate to me that any chicken currently in the fridge is ok for people to eat, because the chicken that was intended for the dog to eat has been used up.

What she actually says is, “That’s human chicken.”

After taking a minute to process all horrible implications of the phrase “human chicken”, I decide to go a different route and hold the tupperware of chicken out to my sister, saying, “Behold, a man!”

This was evidently the wrong choice, as it meant I had to explain to my parents who Diogenes was, thereby cementing the incident in their minds and leading to me, just now, opening the fridge to see the following incredibly cursed image:

I feel like it’s actually directly harmful to the society to not teach arts and humanities in public schools, and to treat culture in general as something special and set-aside. Culture is a public good. Taking that away just feels like a kind of punishment. It’s for every person.

I was raised in a local culture of public art, museum free days accessible across a 500 square mile region, museums that weren’t priced like theme parks, public arts and humanities, music programs in even many poorer schools, arts programs in poor areas being prioritized, and PBS being an awesome resource. And you didn’t have to be rich.

For example: I remember one time I was shopping at a supermarket, and after paying, a staff member walked up to me, and without explaining why, asked me if they could look inside my bag. I was only aware they suspected me of shoplifting (which I hadn’t) because of a previous post I’d read about another autistic in a similar situation. Imagine if an autistic person, unaware of the hidden context, declined to let them look inside the bag. They’d already be deemed as suspicious when in reality, they just didn’t want someone to look inside

Another time I was about to go to a university party organised by the university itself. I was carrying an empty Coca-Cola bottle ONLY because I was drinking one beforehand, and couldn’t find a bin. Without warning, a staff member grabbed my empty bottle and took it away. At first I thought they were just being helpful until I saw the stern look on their face, and then I was confused (only later did I realise they might have thought I would refill it with alcohol later on or something). When I was unable to get in due to not having enough money, I had a shutdown due to the noise and confusion, and was then screamed at to get out despite the fact I did nothing wrong

touché! but once a year things get even more hilarious than usual: WeChat blocks money transfers of $89.64, people share innocuous photos that just happen to contain auspicious numbers:

Some tips from the inside, in case they help:

- life has always been pointless. Or rather, we have always been unable to control the relative point-fulness of life. The factors involved in opening the possibilities of who can have a large scale impact where are so insanely complex that they can at best only be pieced together imperfectly in retrospect

- the only thing that has changed is your awareness of this fact. No, seriously. The sun will eventually swallow the planet; at any moment without our knowledge or control the sun could flare in weird ways that will kill us all; etc. There was geopolitical and socioeconomic fuckery as bad or worse going on before: you just didn’t see it. Promise.

- you do what you can with what you have. You do what’s in front of you. Humanity has survived all of this before; it may survive it again. It may not. You can only do what you can: take what lessons exist from the past and apply them.

- sometimes it is just that bad and they are totally out to get you. The question is, what do you do about it?

- almost without exception in human history the answer has been “build community; support the one you have; reach out to connect MORE and to make the world more kind and less hateful than before.”

- recognize you’re trying to tackle god-level problems with a brain originally meant for keeping small proto-fish from being eaten. Treat that part of your brain like a very anxious toddler or rescue pitbull. Give it small measurable victories and successes even if you have to make them up. Make sure it’s fed and watered and has enough rest. Medicate it if you have to - there’s nothing wrong with that. The opposite, in fact.

Let’s say you need an outdated queer theory textbook that uses biphobic and cissexist rhetoric for your gender studies thesis, but you don’t particularly want to own that book.

Let’s say you need a primary source to strengthen your argument to your college as to why a certain political figure does not deserve to be a speaker at your graduation because they perpetuate hate speech.

Let’s say you and your friends want to hateread a book by your least favorite author but you don’t want to give him your money.

And this is why I don’t, personally, like the pushes lately for only happy representation. I get wanting to correct for decades of “make the gays tragic or iffy,” and I support anyone who wants to do that in their own work. Sometimes—often!—that person is me.

The assumption that everyone is under 18 unless they say otherwise - is both woefully incorrect and not terribly safe.

Understand that, and take precautions to protect yourselves. If someone doesn’t put their age in their bio, assume they’re an adult. If someone DOES put their age in their bio ASSUME THEY ARE LYING AND ARE AN ADULT, because people do that all the time! If someone is a teen, KNOW THEY THEY COULD HAVE TERRIBLE INTENTIONS ANYWAY! Don’t trust complete strangers to self-report their age or intentions, good fucking gods above and below. Learn some basic cyber safety and security. 

Back in 2014, 15% of the site was teenagers.

Given typical website trends, Tumblr probably has approximately the same sort of people it did in 2014–only they’re now 5 years older. (Yes, new users come and old users go all the time, but tumblr stopped being the hot new thing ages ago. It’s not the go-to place for current teens.)

Block the shit out of me and anyone else you don’t like. By all means! But tumblr was never “for teens”, nor have teens ever made up a large percentage of the users. College students weren’t the majority either, nor were 20-somethings. Wherever you draw the Oh No Scary Old People line, there have been tons and tons and tons of scary old people on Tumblr forever.

having a bio telling the supposed age of a person is not protection, it’s the false illusion of security. cuz people lie, y'know. about their age, about their intentions. I had a bio up here on tumblr for years, but I took it down and I’m not gonna put it back cuz I don’t owe the public that information. if u think someone is shady just don’t interact with them and move on. nobody is forcing you to have a chat with people you think are suspicious.

if you don’t trust adults online, how can you trust them to be honest about their age? your own argument of demanding bio data for security reasons doesn’t make sense. even if they have a bio page you cannot tell if it’s true! you’re not any safer than before! you just tried to make a person jump through a hoop u set up and gain no security whatsoever.

The generation who grew up with the internet from day one sees the internet as part of their livingroom they want to feel safe in. That is an unrealistic and dangerous assessment. I wish the internet was safe, I wish there were easy solutions to make the internet a safer place. But there aren’t, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.
