around the winter holidays, parents would often bring us gift cards, notes, and small gifts. one year, a mom came in with little glass jars filled with candy for each of us three teachers. she said, "the gifts are essentially the same, but [child] picked out the containers specifically for each of you. Molly, he picked yours out because, apparently, 'Ms. Molly loves gold circles.'" we both laughed about it because i'd never once expressed a love for gold circles and we really had no idea where he got that notion, but it was sweet.

for the next month or so, I told this story to friends and family as an example of how wonderfully strange children could be, always saying, "isn't that funny? like, where did he even get that idea?"

finally, one day i was telling this story and I happened to look down at my hands. I was wearing five gold rings. I reached up and touched my ears and I was wearing my gold hoops. I put my hand on my nose and I was wearing my gold nose ring. holy shit. I loved gold circles. I loved them to the point where I had at least eight on my body at all times. how seen I suddenly felt!

Although there were a good deal of things I enjoyed about the new Avatar movie, the biggest reason I didn't love it as much as I wanted to because it passed up so many opportunities to develop its characters, and Sokka is the one I think who got done the dirtiest.

Like, come on, people! One of the main antagonists is a RADICAL GROUP OF NON-BENDERS! You don't think the only non-bender member of the Gaang (excluding Suki) would have something to say about what they're doing and how he feels about their cause?! Wouldn't he perhaps be at odds with the benders in the Gaang, probably because he feels more sympathetic about them due to being a nonbender himself and due to how he's been treated, like in the scene above?

And on top of that, wouldn't it have made for compelling conflict if Tagah offered to give him airbending with the staff and his friends and family debated what to do with Tagah's offer? And wouldn't it have made for a very heartwarming message if he chose not to give up being a non-bender because he's proud of it (just as I wouldn't want to give up being autistic)?

No subscription. Just program.

I'm sorry but I'll just never get over it. I remember when companies cared about their products being usable out of the box. I remember when our things belonged to us.

the thing is: it doesn’t appreciably do that, because the feathers wick up water and mud, which cancels out any insulation advantage they might hypothetically confer, and also it wasn’t even put there on purpose.

the Leg Get More Hair gene is just linked to the Bones Get More Big gene. when you breed any lineage of horses to have bigger bones–not just taller, but chunkier–the leg hair just happens anyway. so every single breed of draft horse has feathered legs, and even carriage horses like friesians get feathers once they hit a certain threshold of lorge.
