My rewrite of Kung Fu Panda 4 opening (and some other changes)
So recently I rewatched Kung Fu Panda 4, and I still didn't like it. While I do see why others would enjoy the film, to me the movie had so much missed potential, it's especially disappointing to hear about how much of a nightmare the production was and how poorly DreamWorks and the director treated the co-director. For the past few days, I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if the film was rewritten, so I decided for fun to do my own rewrite of the film. I actually wanted to do a full rewrite of the film back in 2024. But never really got around to doing it and I don't really plan on doing a rewrite of KFP4, if I did then a lot of these ideas I had would probably be changed to better fit the theme. But I hope you still enjoy some of the ideas I came up with
Changes
●So first things first I'm gonna take the original idea of Shifu being kidnapped that the co-director wanted to do and use it in my rewrite. However, I'm also gonna have the Furious Five get captured as well at the start of the story. Po now needs to go to Juniper City not only to stop the Chameleon, but also to save his friends
●For Po I want to keep the whole idea of finding a successor to be the next dragon warrior, BUT I'm gonna remove the idea of Po NEEDING to retire immediately after finding them. It's more gonna be Po finding a successor to train so after he decides to retire, that successor can take his place. With Po learning to accept that he isn't going to be the Dragon Warrior forever
● While I don't hate Zhen as a character, I feel like the twist of her actually working for the Chameleon was way too obvious, even in the trailer. So instead I wanna remove the twist completely, we see Zhen working for the Chameleon at the start as her second in command, but due to a botched attempt to capture Po, she's forced to work with Po in order to stop the Chameleon and save his friends. As the film goes on she slowly starts to realise that the Chameleon is not a good person, seeing how much her actions have affected innocent people, and we actually see her go through a redemption arc. Also, I'm gonna have her secretly be a big nerd for Kung Fu (similar to how Po is) but due to the Chameleon's hatred of Kung Fu, she tries to keep it hidden
• Speaking of the Chameleon I'm gonna completely change her motivation and her backstory. The Chameleon had so much potential to be a great villain like Shen, Kai and Tai Lung. But her reasoning for becoming evil because kung-fu masters refused to teach her due to her size makes no sense in the context of the original films. Mantis and Viper prove this. So I'm gonna give her a new motivation and reasoning. Ever since she was a child, the Chameleon was always interested in sorcery, having been told stories about those who were highly respected and beloved. So for most of her life, she studied to learn magic, eventually learning the ability to shapeshift. However, some kung fu masters started to believe that sorcery was dangerous and evil, especially after what happened with Kai and how he used his own powers to steal chi from others. So they started banning the use of sorcery, spreading fear and lies throughout the land. This caused many people to shun sorcerers, including the Chameleon. In extreme cases, some even killed those whom they believed would use their magic for evil. Angered by this the Chameleon now wishes to take the power of all kung fu masters. Both living and dead. Not only to become stronger but also to use her shape-shifting ability to paint kung fu masters as dangerous so people start to fear them, so they can know what it's like to have people turn their backs on them because of fear and lies spread by those who don't understand
• Next up I'm gonna have the Furious Five be in the rewrite. Apparently, the reasoning for them not being in the film was due to their voice actors being too expensive. Now thankfully I don't have to worry about a budget in this rewrite but if in another universe this rewrite did become a real film, I would've completely given the 5 new voice actors
● Tai Lung is gonna play a much bigger role in this rewrite. By far the most disappointing part of the film for me was how they handled Tai Lung. So for this rewrite, I want to do him justice and actually have him play an important role. Basically being a second main character alongside Po
● I'm gonna remove the side plot with Mr Ping and Li Shan trying to catch up to Po. While they were one of the saving graces of the film, for this I'm gonna instead replace it with more scenes of the Chameleon interacting with Shifu and the 5
● This maybe controversial but I'm gonna remove the cameo of Shen and Kai. As much as I love the idea of them coming back, it's clear that their showing up was just for fan service
• The movie takes place about 3 to 4 years after the third film and starts on the anniversary of Tai Lung's defeat
The opening
The movie starts in Juniper City, where we see The Chameleon and her guards. Including her second-in-command, Zhen in her lair, trying to do a ritual to bridge the gap between the mortal realm and the spirit realm. At first, it seems to work as a small portal opens. However, it quickly loses its golden glow and closes, but not before someone manages to break through. We don't see who this person is, but after a quick fight with her guards, the person manages to escape through a window, leaving the Chameleon furious. After a brief chat with Zhen, who enthusiastically reveals that he was one of Shifu's best students and starts to fangirl a bit before the Chameleon silences her with a stern glare, but when she brings up the dragon warrior and how he was able to enter the spirit realm and make it out by himself, it gives the Chameleon an idea. She orders Zhen and some of her guards to infiltrate the Jade Palace, capture Shifu, The Furious 5 and Po, and bring them to her so she can steal their powers. Specifically, she wants Po so she can open the spirit realm and steal more power. She also tells them to keep an eye out for the mysterious person, so she could do the same with them. Zhen leaves the room, clearly excited about being able to see the Jade Palace, but tries to compose herself and focus on the mission
We cut to Po defending a village from the Stingray like in the original film, but this time The Furious 5 are with him. While Mantis, Viper and Crane are busy keeping the villagers safe from flying debris, Po, Tigress and Monkey are busy trying to take down the Stingray, but eventually Po can do the final blow. After the fight, we see Po and the 5 help around not just Ping and Li Shan's newly opened restaurant, but around the village since it's actually the anniversary of Tai Lung's defeat. As they help around we see the 5 reminisce on the first 3 films (we can even have a joke similar to the second film where they joke about Po becoming the Dragon Warrior being the worst day of their lives, but this time instead of Po looking annoyed, he leans into the joke)
After some fun banter Po is told that Shifu wants to talk with him. At first, Po isn't too sure since he and the others know the anniversary of Tai Lung's defeat is incredibly difficult for Shifu. But he eventually decides to visit him, since it wouldn't be fair to ignore Shifu during a difficult time for him. We get the talk between Po and Shifu in which during the celebration he wants Po to start looking for a potential successor, specifically he should think about maybe picking one of the Furious 5. We get the scene of Po struggling to find his successor but instead of some random kung fu masters, it's the furious 5. It's clear throughout the scene that Po doesn't like the idea of him eventually needing to give up being the Dragon Warrior. Before he picks his successor the celebration is interrupted when one of the villagers runs in a panic, shouting that the Valley of Peace is under attack. Not only that but Po, Shifu and the 5 see the Jade Palace being attacked as well. They decided to split up in groups, Po, Monkey and Viper go to help the village, while Tigress, Shifu and Mantis go to protect the Jade Palace, while there doing that Crane will be in the sky, making sure everyone gets out safely and helping fight when he needs to
We get a cool fight scene with the characters defending the valley from an army of komodo dragons (we can even have a moment where Ping and Li Shan's restaurant gets ruined so out of anger they try to help, using pots and pans to whack the komodo dragons). Suddenly, Po hears Crane flying to him shouting "Po run! It's a trap!" Before getting hit with a few of the darts and falls out of the sky. Po immediately runs to help, he sees the komodo dragons dragging away an unconscious Monkey, Viper and Crane. Realising the truth and that he's outnumbered, Po makes a break for the Jade Palace to warn the others. But as he makes it up the steps he sees that Mantis is already surrounded and Tigress getting hit by one of the darts, knocking her out as the Komodo dragons led by a hooded Zhen quickly grab her, leaving only Shifu and Po standing
The two fight alongside each other as Po desperately tries to stop his friends from being taken, not noticing Zhen aiming one of the blow darts at him. Shifu notices just as she fires the dart, running up and taking the hit. Po watches in horror as Shifu lands on the ground hard, he tries to grab him but Zhen is quicker. Taking the unconscious master in her arms, she creates a distraction just long enough for her and her army to make a break for it with the others
Po desperately tries to chase after the group as he struggles to catch up, not noticing a familiar figure watching everything from the rooftops. One of the komodo dragon remaining tries to slow down Po with his blow dart gun. But the figure incapacitates them with an all too familiar nerve attack, getting hit by the dart himself. The figure stumbles and falls to the ground face first unconscious. Po immediately recognises the attack. He walks over, turns the figure on his back, and it's revealed to be none other than Tai Lung himself, alive. As Zhen and the others make their escape with Shifu and the 5, Po is left exhausted, heartbroken, and bewildered as he stares at his seemingly revived enemy
Redimus headcanon: (TW for the mention of suicide)
Redimus suffers from some form of suicidal ideation. For most of his life, he believed his life was less important than those of those around him. This has led to Redimus becoming reckless with his safety when it comes to protecting those he cares about, ie him taking on the Pillar Guards by himself to buy others time during the battle at New Attica and him letting himself get swept into the flooded ravine burrows to save Terradora
A few months after Terradora and Redimus became mates, there was an incident where a Snapfang (a large venomous snake-like creature) broke out from its cage and ran amok in the camp. Despite Terradora's warnings Redimus ran in to try and distract the creature to buy the other Dorcean time to take cover and get Lutumor. But before help could arrive the Snapfang made an attempt to strike at Terradora while she was escorting her father to safety. Without thinking, Redimus jumped in the way. The Snapfang sinking it's fangs into his shoulder and injected its poison into his system. The creature was put down just before Redimus lost consciousness
Redimus almost didn't make it, but thankfully the tribes healer was able to provide an antivenom. When Redimus woke up, Terradora scolded him for being reckless with his life and for how close she was to losing him. Redimus tried to calm her down, eventually admitting to his feelings of feeling like his life wouldn't be a major loss if it meant those he cared about could live on. Terradora looked him dead in the eye and said "Your life is worth something. A life without you is one not worth it. I and the others can't bear a day without you in it." As she held his claws. Something snapped in Redimus when he heard that, and he just broke down into Terradora's arms

What’s your take on Besteel and Redimus’ father? I mean, apart from getting the prize for ‘worst father of the year award’ (poor Redie)
For the most part, Huntoris (who I decided would be his name) was a very emotionally distant father. He raised and took care of them, but he was more of a cold stern hunter than a father. It doesn't help that he always had a short temper, which is where Besteel got it from. Unfortunately, he wasn't above physical punishment if he thought it was necessary (most times it wasn't)
The reason Huntoris was like this was that he wanted his sons to follow in his footsteps by becoming hunters and upholding his tribe's traditions. At a young age, he put a lot of pressure on his boys (specifically Redimus, his eldest) to do so. Once he realised that wasn't going to be the case after the Horned Matrick incident, he made his disdain towards his son's lack of hunting instinct known to him until the day he died. He poured all his focus on Besteel, since he was more willing to become a hunter
Now that isn't to say that he didn't care about his sons, but his way of showing how much he cared for them (verbal, emotional and even sometimes physical abuse) was not healthy and he himself was still a horrible father. Much of his behaviour stems from the loss of his mate, with Redimus's empathy reminding Huntoris of Myra before she died. He doesn't want to go through that same pain again because he believes that empathy makes a Dorcean more open to getting hurt or killed. Hence why he was so tough on Besteel and especially Redimus. It's an explanation, but not an excuse for how he treated them
Here are some notes about Ash, Wolf's son he didn't know he had in honour of Star Fox 2026 being released. If you want more context check out my post here
● Appearance-wise, Ash looks almost identical to Wolf. His fur shares a similar grey to his father but leans more towards red like his mother, along with him sharing her blue eyes. Aside from fur colour, eye colour, and general style of clothes. He very much looks like a younger (less ruthless) Wolf
● The two may share most of their looks, but they couldn't be more different when it comes to their personalities. While he still shares Wolf's stubbornness, Ash is a lot more openly cheerful and friendly. While he's still learning about how to pilot an Arwing, he knows a thing or two about how to make effective weapons for his teammates
● When Ash was born, Fox would've been around 12. Just a little over a year before he lost his own father
● After Andross's defeat, Star Fox started doing more odd jobs to make extra money. It's how they all got acquainted with Willow, who would often ask them to make deliveries of her weapons to Corneria when she wasn't able to. When this started Ash was around 8 when he first met Star Fox
● Out of the crew, Ash is easily the closest to Fox. They have this brotherly dynamic with Fox often acting like a sort of a mentor to the youngster and even sometimes letting him join on their safer missions. Much to Willow's reluctance
● Ash is very close to his mother. She did raise him by herself after all. His friends often joke that he's a bit of a mama's boy
● Ash didn't really know much about who his father was. This was due to Willow deciding not to tell him much about Wolf due to not wanting her son to end up following her or his father's footsteps as mercenaries, a job she's tried everything to distance herself from for her son's safety
● When Ash was 17 he did finally run into his father, more like his father's teammates ran into them....with their Arwings. During one of his tagalongs, Ash had snuck out one night to try flying one of the Arwings (specifically Falco's). Leon and Panther had been out scouting for Wolf when they had noticed the lone Arwing. Thinking it was a member of Team Star Fox being reckless, they used it as an opportunity to shoot down the ship and crash it, wanting to use the unknown pilot as ransom so that Star Fox could pay. But to their shock they weren't met with one of their rivals, but a kid. Nevertheless, they took him prisoner where Ash met faced to face with Wolf, neither knowing that they were related
● When first seeing the boy, Wolf definitely noticed the uncanny similarity to himself when he was young, but he first thought it was just a coincidence. That was until, during an interrogation, Ash revealed to Wolf that his mother's name was Willow Penn. That's when it all clicks for Wolf as he remembers his last night with her
● Wolf and Ash's relationship is very complicated to say the least. It's very similar to Spider and Quaritch's relationship in the Avatar films. Wolf at first sees Ash as a means to get back at Star Fox for humiliating him during the Lylat War. But once he learns about who Ash is and spends more time with him, he starts to genuinely care about his son and even feels some sort of remorse for leaving Willow to raise him on his own. While Ash has to accept the fact that the father he never got to grow up with, isn't the person he envisioned
● Once Ash gets older, he eventually becomes a full member of Star Fox led by Fox's son Marcus. Ash takes up the older-brother-figure role Fox was to him
Another issue I have with the show's changes to the original Wondla books:
How little emphasis the show puts on the actual WondLa and what it means. Yes, Eva starts the series thinking the "WondLa" is a place. But even with the reveal that it was a torn page from The Wizard of Oz, it becomes so much more than that. It becomes a symbol of the found family Eva has made, the home she's found, and the people she wants to protect. My favourite line in the second book is when Rovender tells Eva that she is his WondLa, because it beautifully shows the meaning WondLa has gained for the characters
But in the show, after Eva finds out what the page really is, it's rarely brought up again after season 1. How do you devalue the literal thing the series is named after?
● Redimus and Besteel's mother was named Myra. Her fur colour was dark greyish blue with stripes on her arms
● Sadly Besteel and Redimus didn't get the chance to grow up with their mother due to her dying after complications during their birth
● They don't really know much about Myra due to their father not talking much about her and not really keen on sharing stories of her due to his own grief over losing her
● What they do know is that apparently, she was a lot kinder and more sympathetic compared to their father. Despite being a hunter herself. Redimus often wonders if that's where he got his empathy from
● Despite their father not really being a good parent, he did truly love Myra. When he found out about her death after the birth, he walked out into the Forest and let out the loudest mourning wail any Dorcean in their tribe had ever heard. Even though he never spoke much about her, he never tried to find another mate nor did he ever speak ill of her the rare times he did the subject was brought up

Forest Dorcean cubs screech loudly like barn owls. Usually, this is done to get their parents' attention, when they are hungry, upset, or just playing together. Besteel and Redimus would screech at each other for hours when they were cubs. Their father was very close to giving them up to their local trader for free if it meant he didn't have to hear that screeching ever again
"Jax is a bad allegory for trans people because they're an abuser and therefore TADC is homophobic/transphobic"
I don't like this idea that all trans/LGBTQA+ people need to be perfect individuals to be seen as good representation and that you can't have people in these groups do bad things. It reminds me of how some call Angel Dust a bad representation of gay men/sexual abuse victims because he isn't this perfect victim who can do no wrong. Sometimes people who have been hurt can end up hurting others. There are people out there who are still closeted and deal with it in very unhealthy ways. If every LGBTQIA+ character were a perfect angel who could do no wrong, then it would get boring fast and kinda insulting to the community
There are a lot of themes about Jax repressing themselves due to growing up in an abusive household. From them pushing Ribbit and Pomni away when they try to offer support, to them trying to repress their identity, to the multiple mentions of masculinity when referring to them. They put on the facade of a "cartoon bully" to protect themselves. Because the last time they opened themselves up to someone and built a deeper connection to someone (that being his own mother) it was immediately used as ammunition to attack them. It's an explanation, not an excuse for Jax's behaviour. It doesn't change the fact that they abused and hurt people. Jax is a literal cautionary tale of what can happen to someone who refuses to grow as a person and pushes those who try to help them away
Also to the people who are using the fact that Goose has said that she relates to Jax and based their story and flaws on her own as a way to claim that Goose is a bad person and justify harassing her. I think that's your cue to go touch grass
Another point: the show actually had the balls to have Jax be the reason why Ribbit abstracted. Usually in stories where a character feels guilty for another's death, it's usually something out of their control or have their final fight be a misunderstanding. It could've been so easy for the writers to have something else cause Ribbit's abstraction. But no. Her abstraction was Jax's fault. They cut them out of their life and the group because they were so insecure about Ribbit telling the others their secret despite her not, even when they were distancing themselves from her. Jax knew exactly what they were doing, even if they didn't think that she would abstract. The show rightfully makes it clear as day that what Jax did to Ribbit was fucking horrible, and there is no excuse for what they did
