“i guess she [gem] doesn’t want people to put her on a pedestal” YES pearl preach that. it really irked me for quite a while how people kept holding gem to insanely high expectations in terms of pvp and acting as if she had set them herself, when she was constantly very modest and never claimed to be the best pvper and had to keep batting off these claims. i’m glad she left behind the geminislay thing because frankly? it left a bad taste in my mouth after secret life and it also felt too much like reducing her to a 2d character of “woman who can fight”. like it was supposed to be just a fun little thing but it turned condescending pretty quick

Mcyt fans always seem to turn women in to 2D examples of only one of their traits, and dont let multiple share the same trait. Pearl is seen as 'the one who is good at building', even though all the hermitgirls are great at it. Cleo is 'the one who is good at armour stands' or sometimes 'the scary woman'. Stress is 'the one who likes flowers and pink things'. False used to be the 'one who is good at pvp' but now Gem has fulfilled that niche, leading False to get greatly reduced fandom attention. People talk about the hermitgirls as if to show how much they like cool female characters, but only represent them in the incredibly flat way the rest of the fandom sees them, instead of as people with complex personalities, who can be good at the same thing and still be different from each other. It's very frustrating.

I think it partially comes to be that way because of people not actually watching the Hermits they’re talking about. Like I have been avidly watching Gem and Stress for a few years now. And it baffles me how either of them could be boiled down into just one trait. But I don’t properly watch the other Hermit girls (yet). So from a lens of someone who has only watched a handful of False’s videos, in my head the description I have of her is “She’s good at building and PvP”. If you don’t actually watch a persons videos, you don’t properly get to know them and all the wonderful things about their content. So just as I only really know False as someone who’s good at building and PvP. If you were solely an Etho or Doc watcher in Season 9, you probably just saw Gem as “that scary Canadian girl who’s good at PvP”. People who boil down someone into just a handful of traits, I like to hope at the very least, don’t actually know anything about the person they’re boiling down.
