“One day, not long after we’d been in the studio in Hong Kong, I suddenly felt frustrated, and deeply irritated. I was listening to the tapes on a loop. And what I was hearing was much more than just a naive and spontaneous racket. The material was there, hidden beneath all the noise! I knew it! I thought that it couldn’t remain buried, and that once again we had found ourselves in an unresolved situation. That really infuriated me. So I called Stephen Street [their producer from the outset: Parklife, Modern Life Is Rubbish…] and we put it all in order. Then I brought the demos to Damon. Knowing him, I was expecting him to say: ‘Nah, there’s no point… I refuse to release another fucking record with Blur!’ But against all odds, he started dancing and he exclaimed ‘It’s great! Keep going!’ I felt like I was driving in central London at 60 miles an hour, on an empty road with nothing but green traffic lights ahead of me. And, in a way, I felt like I was going home.”
