The Gallaghers Are Not Well-Known in the US: Initial Data
I have some data to share! so the gcest oasis study I'm running hasn't got to the fun part yet, but I just finished analyzing the results of the pre-test, in which I showed participants a series of random photos of celebrities – including noel and liam – and asked people to identify them (so I can exclude people who already know them from the main study). if you've ever wondered how recognizable the gallaghers are in the US, I have your answer!
I collected data from a census-matched sample of 980 americans (i.e., demographics like gender, race, and age are in the same quantities as the general US population). this amount of people has enough statistical power to make generalizations about. here are my findings:
among the participants, 67% did NOT recognize liam at all, and 71% did NOT recognize noel at all.
only 19% of participants for each of them claimed they were confident they knew who they were (regardless of whether they could actually name them). however...
of the people who said they could even name them, only 56% correctly identified liam as "liam gallagher". that means only 6% of the full sample fully recognized and could identify liam. an additional 2% thought he was noel, and 3% simply recognized him as "a gallagher" or "from oasis". two individuals thought he was john lennon, one thought he was ringo, and one thought he was miley cyrus' fiance
of the people who said they could name noel, only 46% correctly identified noel as "noel gallagher". that means only 5% of the full sample fully recognized and could identify noel. an additional 3% thought he was liam, and another 3% simply recognized him as "a gallagher" or "from oasis". two individuals thought he was peter dinklage
so, to reiterate, it is likely from these results that only about 5-6% of the US population recognizes noel and liam by name
