Happy 4/27! Posting a little late into the night, I know I know. But it’s still 4/27 in my timezone so I still get to celebrate.

I wanted to make something that felt similar to the narrator’s figley video, cuz that video is so silly and really just encapsulates what I love about the Stanley parable.

It’s crazy how a game can impact your life to this degree; all the items in the video would have never existed had it not been for this game. And I would not have met so many awesome artists and friends. I’m very grateful to say the least. Grateful to have gotten to know the people I do and make the things I’ve made. Grateful that I not only get to share these items with you and to also see just how much you guys have enjoyed the things I make. That my effort means something.

But with how much it can impact your life. This game means so much to me now, not just because it’s silly and funny and there’s a lot of cool/wonderful things to extrapolate from it. But because it’s helped me improve my writing exponentially, my confidence in it so much (as I am going to be a publishing author later in life too)

I’ve bonded with people through it, with either them playing the game too or me just yapping and talking about it a bunch to or with them.

Because it is such a thought provoking game, I feel like it’s contributed some to how I became a very thoughtful person and critical thinker. And that’s something I really like about myself.

I’m not in the peak of my interest anymore (still LOVE IT of course), and even when I might lose most interest in playing it or interacting with the fandom in the future (not anytime soon), it’ll still hold a place in my heart and I’m grateful for this game existing as it is and me finding it and deciding to play it.

Which led me to go down and look at other posts of people saying that if you enjoy Harry Potter and if you make any sort of Harry Potter content, you’re disgusting and are getting immediately blocked.

This pissed me off like nothing other, because holy shit. Obviously, I don’t support JKR. She has said horrible things and supported horrible corporations and causes.

But there is a difference of fans of Harry Potter who support that woman, vs people just liking the series and wanting to enjoy it. There are many reasons why someone might still like Harry Potter that doesn’t involve liking JKR as a person. Perhaps they grew up on it, they have a lot of fond memories associated with it. Maybe they were first inspired by it, maybe they like creating art and writing from it! Maybe they just simply like being silly and playing those little patronus and hogwarts house tests. Maybe they met someone through this series that they’re now close with, or a community to connect with.

There’s a lot of reasons, and all of those are harmless (exceptions exist of course). Obviously it’s a far from perfect series but telling people to fuck off and pick up another book to read is just mean and bullying. I’m sure they have. I’m sure there are many Harry Potter fans that are avid readers out there. I’m sure a lot of them have good taste in other books and authors as well.

I love Good Omens. Do I support Neil Gaiman or like him in any way at all? Absolutely fucking not. But Good Omens is dear to me— the characters, the book, Terry Pratchett, the show, the actors from it and other wonderful people who worked on it. The wonderful people in the fandom. Those are the people I want to support, aside from being personally attached to the wonderful characters and storyline.

“Oh but they’re putting money in JKR’s pocket! Oh but Harry Potter is just a shitty series and people need to let go of it!” I do wish Harry Potter wasn’t still so praised as it is in the general public, but people can choose whether or not they want to still buy merch. I personally never want to, and if you think people are wasting their money on it, then sure, they are, and that’s their money, not yours. Creating and posting a fanart is not putting money in JKR’s pocket. Posting a fic to ao3 is not putting money in JKR’s pocket. Talking about reasons you like or dislike Harry Potter is not putting money in JKR’s pocket.

I don’t want to get attacked for this. I know I can’t change some people’s minds and if you’re so set on calling people horrible human beings for liking something and being creative with it, harmless with it, then stay in that miserable mindset for all I care. I just wanted to rant about it because I’m firmly against putting people down because of something harmless they may be doing because you don’t fucking agree with it or personally like. I don’t like Harry Potter anymore either, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna shit on all other people that do. I’m entirely fucking sure some of you guys have interests that were first made by bad people. It’s difficult to avoid nowadays, unfortunately, but if you don’t, I’m happy for you, truly. It’s not inherently wrong to like those things, it’s wrong to want to support that person and do. That’s fucking it. There’s a difference.

Stop thinking you have such a moral high ground by saying stuff like this and attacking others just because you don’t agree with them. Get a grip and learn nuance.

How many gifsets and fanworks have you seen that inspired you to watch or read the thing that inspired it? I know I have at least once with these specific requirements

Creating fanworks and gifsets isn't putting money in her pockets but they are creating engagement and JKR explicitly stated that any support for HP is seen as agreement with her views

I grew up with HP so did many people but I am not naive enough to think that JKR will finish with the trans community she will come for other groups next if her potshots on ace visibility day and her comments about the autistic community are anything to go by

being in a private group chat to talk about HP things is fine because it is private and last i checked unable to be tracked, talking about it with friends in your own home no internet required is fine because it cannot be tracked as engagement. Heck if you need to spend money do it in a charity shop they often have HP stuff (I should know). Posting things online can be tracked and will be counted as engagement

I didn’t realize she ever said that posting engagement meant you were agreeing with her views. I still don’t believe that has to be the case, but I do know where you are coming from, and it can be difficult to tell with people (who may have never known that as well, but also they may have and still choose to do so).

I just saw so much anger towards people that to me, didn’t deserve it, and it made me upset too, even though I don’t interact with HP anymore either.

I very much agree that there are much better series out there, that there’s another series and multiple you can you read and love if you love(d) HP! I haven’t read the series since I was a kid, so yeah, much better books out there.
