the word empathy is WIDELY misused, even in mental health spaces.
empathy:
is responding to a person’s emotions by experiencing the same emotion as them (i.e. feeling sad when something sad happens to that person, or happy when something happy happens to that person.)
is an automatic response that cannot be controlled
cannot be learned
sympathy:
is recognizing that another person is in pain, even if you do not experience that pain, and offering comfort to that person
is something a person must actively choose to do
can be learned
compassion:
is showcasing care and support via words and actions
is something a person must actively choose to do
can be learned
if you need an example of a person with no empathy who practices sympathy and compassion, look no further than data from star trek: the next generation. he doesn’t have emotions at all, but he’s still kind to people and wants to help them.
stop telling people that they’re evil because they don’t experience empathy. stop equating empathy with morality. stop equating empathy with caring. stop saying that cruel people “lack empathy.” stop throwing neurodivergent and mentally ill people under the bus.
Something interesting I noticed:
People with too much empathy may at times be less reliable in times of need. Empathy means when someone is upset - you are upset. Involountairly. And its exausting!
I observed a generaly kind people with high empathy reflexively downplaying somebody’s suffering as a defence mechanism so they arent forced feel it themselves. “Oh Im sure its not that bad!” (*I dont want to become upset) Or even snapping on the other person “Stop being so dramatic!” (*Stop making me feel this way)
People with lower empathy may not know or understand how other people feel and what to do about it. But in turn they may be able to handle other people’s distress and stay calm. Not to mention acting in the stress situations.
Example: taking our cat to the vet. She does not sctratch but really hates being put into cat transporter. Squirms and meows sooo pathetically. My mom cant bring herself to hold poor cat firmly and stuff her into the container, so the cat kept escaping her and missed a number of checkups. I love our cat as well but I am capable of manhandling her if I need to, so now I have to be the one to do this every time.
i like the japanese dub of the one whos running the show a lot because it sounds like nobody even tried to make the words fit into the song so the va sounds like he has a gun to his head
How would you describe a dragon to someone who has never seen a dragon?

didnt know how to interpret "make it a lizard" so i wrote lizard and drew an arrow pointing to the horse so people know its a lizard. Also didn't know what bat horns were so I gave it a horned bat nose

I think my favorite thing about this is that the cat's so comfortable with it. Pyaari is alert and possibly a little confused, but perfectly chill with everything going on here up to and including sticking things on her face.

yknow its interesting how something can impact one demographic in a completely different way than everyone else. in the exorcist when the demon starts speaking in greek, to most people its creepy. but if youre greek and you suddenly start hearing the demon speak perfect fucking greek its genuinely the biggest scare of the movie. you just do not expect to ever hear your language in american movies so it catches you so badly off guard, it feels like the movie is talking directly to you
the first time my dad saw it, it was with his american friends. and when she started speaking greek he turned to one of them and was like "re malaka did you hear that in english?"

they're not super common but i really do appreciate characters who are introduced as one gender and later revealed to be closeted trans. i like that it challenges the audience to really think about how they perceive trans people because realistically not every trans person you meet is going to be out to you at first. yes we introduced this character as a man and now we're asking you to reframe her as a woman after you've already gotten to know her. can you be normal about that? can you be normal when it happens to people you know in real life? i hope you can.

What I’d give for one of the Cinderella remakes to go into how when you’re in an isolated and abusive situation, sometimes you need to be saved and you’re not weak if you can’t escape by yourself
I’ve never been a fan of bad faith reinterpretations of fairy tales, especially ones which flatten the originals into “princesses is saved by a prince and nothing else”, to then go #girlboss. The princess can save herself because she’s a strong female character! (Implying if you’re in a bad situation, it’s because you’re not strong enough to get out)
Also the concept of the Prince over the course of like… a couple hours hanging out with Cinderella going from ‘Haha nice I really like you’ to ‘oh fuck i can tell from context clues alone that your home situation is FUCKED UP’ it’s good shit ‘I have just met you but ON GOD I’m gonna get you out of there beautiful mystery woman’ cinderella makes desperately yelling into the night ‘how can I find you again!??!’ when she’s taking off that much more poignant really
