do a little bit feel that many people who would say they view videogames as art actually moreso view them as containers for 'real' art forms such as animation and music and writing, rather than a whole work of art in itself of which the gameplay is an essential component with equal part in its artistic merit

I think an aspect of it is people literally not understanding that gameplay creates narratives and experiences You kinda see this more overtly in TTRPG spaces, I think. You have a lot of people who legitimately ask, "Why should I learn another system? Why don't I just homebrew everything into D&D?" because they literally don't realize that a ruleset and game mechanics are leading them to specific stories and interactions. There is a tendency to view the actual mechanics not as a way to create emergent experiences and tell stories in and of themselves, but as a blank canvas to insert experiences onto. I think a lot of people see all games in this manner.

In every way this is set up to be a joke like any other short video, it even uses the trope of main character in a wig to represent their mom, but it isn't funny at all. It's just sweet and nice

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this

Engaging with Harry Potter in 2026 is like watching a dog piss on a pizza - making eye contact with you the entire time - and then saying "oh don't worry I'll eat around the piss, or I'll wash the piss off" MATE it's a piss pizza.
