Undead, furniture, doors, and heroes
I had the original Heroquest when I was a kid. Being too young and rural to get the full experience, I had to settle for making dozens of maps that would never see play. As an adult, the reprint has been a hit at the table. So I painted the core box to add to the fun.
I've ringed each monster base with its original color, for categorization. Undead are white, living are green, Dread/Chaos are gray. It comes up a couple of times in the core set, so I kept it consistent.
Heroquest is an easy entry to dungeon crawling and the large miniature set sells the experience. It's really cool to watch the DM(Zargon the Evil Wizard!) build out the board every time you open a door or turn a corner. The furniture and doors are key, I think: they're concrete representations while much of the board is tiles and imaginary walls. Fewer abstractions, fewer barriers to getting players on board.
Dread Warriors, Dread Sorcerer, Gargoyle, furniture, and heroes
I get up to six players at my table, but the game is designed for five. Adding more hero pawns solved that easily, but you don't need this many. They were fun to add in while batch painting, so I did a lot of them.
Goblins, orcs, abominations, furniture
I'm not Warhammerin' so I'm using colors I haven't picked up for a spell. I loved painting the pinks, purple, yellow, oranges, and metallic colors. Collecting those odd colors was definitely worth it.
It's refreshing to step outside the grimdark palette for a break. I have some official expansions so they're getting added to my backlog. I already have new ideas for those fish men.
