Went to the Dampfloktreffen over the weekend. Impressive how many RB 2-10-0 instances are still around (the 5x series). Of course I grabbed photos of one of the only non-steam locomotives there…

Just a note for those of you who might want to assist: shilling for heating oil
(I nearly just typed "Shipping for heating oil", which would be something else entirely... Never mind. 😅 )
Some of you will have noticed that the geopolitical temperature has risen abruptly today. I'm still working to pull enough cash together to do a heating oil order today so that I can (pretty much nearly) fill the house's tank... and then [theoretically] go back to paying attention to what I need to be doing, which is working, and not freaking out about a house it's too cold to write in.*
I've only got a couple of hours left today (till around 5:30 PM Irish time) to get an order in before the price goes sky high, tomorrow, secondary to whatever tragic crap is apparently about to bust loose (and will doubtless adversely affect the markets even if it doesn't).
Want to assist? This would be a REALLY good time to buy some ebooks.
The 9-volume Young Wizards revised editions bundle is here.
Our New Millennium Editions box sets are optimized for each of the devices appearing under the price listing. Please click on one to choose
The Whole Store bundle, if you're feeling goofy enough to buy the whole shebang, is here. (And the price remains goofy too. Seriously, I should have my head felt.)
This ebook bundle (not available in the UK: details below) contains our complete inventory of non-new-release* works. All our ebooks are DRM
Otherwise... already got too many ebooks, but want to assist in some other way? There's always my Ko-Fi. (And many thanks in advance to those who go for this option. It's really useful...)
In any case: thanks to everybody who wants to lend a hand with getting this particular chronic worry off the table. ...And thanks, too, to those of you who can't assist, but will be thinking Good Thoughts. I know you're out there.
(sighing) And now back to the werewolf recipes...
*I hate these just-before-royalty-payment-time bare patches, but (ugh) they happen. SO annoying... especially right at the moment.
whenever i see a black-led film or tv show doing well i always think about how chris rock had to fight against the studio to cast the leading woman in his tv show as dark-skinned (a woman based on his real-life mom who was dark-skinned); how jordan peele got shit for saying he's not interested in casting white leads, and people refused to understand that the white girlfriend in get out was the villain; how black panther is by default the most feminist movie in the mcu not even because of shuri, okoye, and nakia's distinct roles, which are in a league of their own, but because of the dora milaje; and now how people are saying annie in sinners looks like smoke's mom.
none of these men's work or track record is perfect but it's just wild that black men are the last line in hollywood for not only black women but all women's representation. because hollywood is so racist and misogynoir that black men fighting to faithfully represent the women in their own communities diversifies the pool so radically LMFAOOO

In 2017, American film researchers recovered “Something Good – Negro Kiss,” a short film depicting a playful kiss between a Black couple which had not seen the light of day for more than a century. A long-forgotten artifact from the earliest years of American film, the sweet, humanizing vignette, produced by the Selig Polyscope Company, makes a startling contrast to the overwhelmingly racist and blackface-ridden contempory portrayals of African Americans. Four years later in 2021, archivists in Norway, halfway across the world, identified a sister short in their collections—an extended alternate cut which reveals more of Chicago stage performers Gertie Brown and Saint Suttle’s vaudeville-like routine, a theatrical, hot-and-cold romantic dynamic between two lovers which parodies the popular and controversial short “The Kiss” (1896).
Both films, which had previously been lost, were known from entries in old motion picture catalogs but had been assumed to be era-typical, anti-Black “race films” until their rediscovery in the 21st century. Together with its more famous sibling, which has since been inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, this alternate version of “Something Good” represents the first-known instance of Black intimacy ever captured on-screen.
SOMETHING GOOD [Alternate Version] (1898)
Directed by William Selig
etalkctv: Dreams are coming true on the Met Gala red carpet! 🤍
Zendaya had a fangirl moment while posing for photos at the Met Gala when she turned around to find the entire carpet consumed by THE Diana Ross’s train. This is the first time Ross has attended the Met Gala in over 20 years. Always the multi-hyphenate, Miss Ross designed her own outfit for the occasion.
What makes this sighting even better is that Zendaya appeared to be paying tribute to Diana Ross’s look in the 1975 film ‘Mahogany’ with her all-white Louis Vuitton silk suit and hat (of course, accessorizing with her diamond engagement ring from Tom Holland).
Zendaya’s suit itself could be paying homage to actress and actress Bianca Jagger who wore an all-white suit to the Kenneth Jay Lane party the year before ‘Mahogany’ in 1974.

I think a lot of people reblogging this from @probablybadrpgideas are interpreting this as “this would be such a funny wacky way to make the table soooo complicated” but I mean this as a complaint about the way that so many tabletop players seem to just. completely lack an understanding of ethics. what it actually means to behave ethically and treat others ethically. and i dont mean this as "why do people want to be mean and play as villains? :(" i mean "why are there so many tabletop players that sympathize with outright fascist factions to the point of wondering why theyre listed as 'Lawful Evil' in the book"
Goblins were in fact, for me, a turning point on this concept. I had a player who wanted to be a goblin, and I forgot about this fact up to the point that the party got a quest to kill goblins. As soon as I was announcing the quest I realized it would be a problem, though I didn't have anything else ready so I went with it. And it was! The players immediately questioned why the mayor was paying mercenaries to kill goblins, and then further questioned his justifications, at which point I realized it would be a better story if the goblins were a scapegoat and not an actual villain.
This turned into a terse interrogation where the mayor threatened to put them in jail once their questions got pointed enough that he would have to either field accusations or lie; they then went CSI on the situation and drilled through his political cabinet to get answers. I had to improv pretty much all of it and I don't remember the actual ending (I know they sided with the goblins and the mayor was guilty), but this helped me realize that the Gary Gygax writing style of "certain races are just BAD and that's why they hang out in dungeons" was very short-sighted.
D&D writing, by and large, encourages a lack of questions. The surface runs deep. "Go into a cave and chop up goblins." Why are we doing this? "Goblins are bad." All goblins? "Yes."
I think the question of "why are there players comfortable siding with fascist factions and wondering why they're called 'lawful evil'" is pretty easily answered with... because D&D itself is inherently kind of fascist. And it's the most insidious kind of fascist, too- its villains are fascists, so how could you point fingers at the book?
Fire Giants are dwarf slavers. Drow are a megalomaniacal theocracy who hate men. Orcs are violent tribes of marauding killers. Illithids want to destroy all life and keep an entire civilization to scrub their floors. But these narratives still push the idea that "evil" is a racial trait. The players are not only justified in their campaign to destroy these cultures, they're encouraged to do it.
They let the cat out of the bag by making these playable races; because now, they're not cut-and-dry villanous societies. They're people. There are Drow accountants whose lives are about balancing taxes, not worshipping Lolth. There are Yuan-Ti who don't sacrifice babies on altars, and much prefer playing the lute or sewing blankets. Yet we're still expected to read "Chaotic Evil" under the Monster Manual entry for a bugbear and take it seriously.
Reblogging again to add a quick take: as a DM introducing ethics makes your game so much better.
I had an intro to my campaign that involved a mad scientist kidnapping someone and turning them into a wererat. I didn't think much of it and I spent way more time fleshing out the other NPCs, I just wanted to use that wererat as a boss fight.
Once the party encountered him though they immediately saw what I totally missed: the guy who became the wererat was absolutely the victim of this story. I did my best at thinking on my feet and made the wererat this defeated guy who only followed the mad scientist because he felt like his life was ruined. So they, through good rolls, convinced him to help them fight the mad scientist and it made for such a better story.
The moral I'm trying to convey is that you need to treat every NPC in your game as a world within themselves. And I mean EVERY NPC. Why are the wolves attacking people? Are they desperately hungry? Mind controlled? Territorial due to poachers? Why are the goblins working for the wizard? Extortion? Promise of riches? If the bandits see that everyone is in armor, why wouldn't they just let the party pass and wait for easier prey? If one of the bandits die, why wouldn't the rest of them run for the hills?

anyone interested in the subject should definitely also check out the whole Three Black Halflings podcast, which talks about being black in nerdy spaces. a lot of times they’ll have on guests talking about their intersections and experiences in nerdy spaces. they have an episode with the author of the articles above.
they’ve also played a ttrpg based on african mythologies rather than mostly european ones like most mainstream fantasy.
the amount of people in the notes going "um actually you're the problem for pointing out subconscious biases" is just astouding.
Like I'm sorry to tell you, but if you keep playing shit that tells you some races are inherently evil and deserving of eradication, then yea. That will absolutely seep into your subconscious beliefs and worldview.
Especially with stuff like this, where it already is DEEPLY ingrained in society and all these "evil" races stereotype non-western ethnicities to some degree
When the music business was first commodified in this country, y'know genre itself was a tool of racism. Like, if a black person sang a song and then if a white person sang the same song they would put those two songs into two different genres. The black song would be called a race record and then if a white person sang the song that might be called bluegrass. The music industry came before the film industry. It's an older industry so a lot of the film business follows the whims of music cause it's an older industry. That tradition causes certain genres to be ghettoized. Like this genre is beneath this genre. The horror movie is beneath the costume drama.

This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.
Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".

I'm gonna put my mom hat on and remind everyone that you can explain almost anything to a child as long as you explain it at their level.
"Sometimes people are born and girl and feel they should have been a boy, so they decide to live as a boy". My four year old understood that instinctively.
"Sex is when people touch each other's bodies and it feels good, but it's usually something you don't get interested in until you become a teenager. Masturbation is when you touch your own body and it feels good. " That was how I explained sex to a 6 year old.
"Some people are having a hard time with drugs or have a mental illness that needs treatment. If you see someone acting weird in public but they aren't hurting anyone or themselves, you can just give them space." A classic city neighborhood lesson.
You can explain human things without creating a cocoon of shame over every aspect of life. My goal as a parent is to raise an informed, empathic adult who doesn't turn in fear from other people.
