Transcript: It reminds me of the “bike to work” movement. That is also portrayed as white, but in my city more than half of the people on bike are not white. I was once talking to a white activist who was photographic “bike commuters” and had only pictures of white people with the occasional “Black professional” I asked her why she didn’t photograph the delivery people, construction workers etc… id. the Black and [Latine] and Asian people… and she mumbled something about trying to “improve the image of biking” then admitted that she didn’t really see them as part of the “green movement” since they “probably have no choice” - I was so mad I wanted to quit working on the project she and I were collaborating on. So, in the same way when people in a poor neighborhood grow food in their yards… it’s just being poor- but when white people do it they are saving the earth or something.“ -comment left on the Racialious blog post “Sustainable Food and Privilege: Why is Green always White (and Male and Upper-Class) (via meggannn). i’m spending today thinking about how saber toothed cats ALSO probably had a potato form. how they also had a stage where they were fat little babies with very triangle tails and tiny squeaky voices. how they also probably play wrestled and failed badly at calculating jumps.
i’m going to fistfight god for killing them off before i could personally see fat potato saber kittens
Like this?
Boop the toe beans!
JOSCHUA DRAW SMILODON ALREADY
Never, muhahaha!
What’s the consensus on sabertooth jowls? I thought exposed teeth were frowned on nowadays
IIRC the evidence points towards Smilodon’s fangs still being exposed when its mouth was closed but not the sabertooth cats with smaller fangs such as Homotherium.
Plus there’s an ancient petroglyph in Arizona that possibly depicts a Smilodon with exposed fangs
“Saber-toothed” animals that keep their fangs in their mouth usually have canines that either don’t project far past the chin, or have bony flanges on the chin that follow the canines. It’s easy to visualize a “sheath” in the lower jaw for these teeth - it’s what clouded leopards and baboons do.
Smilodon’s teeth, on the other hand, stick much farther down from the chin than any of these guys.
Now, we do have extant animals with big pointy teeth that point that far down from the chin! And their fangs are exposed.
Besides that, the material composition of Smilodon’s teeth (i.e. heavily reduced enamel relative to dentine and cementum) is more similar to those of mammals that have tusks outside of the mouth (walruses, elephants, and some pigs; they either have thin strips of enamel or none at all) than teeth kept inside the mouth. So the evidence points to Smilodon (and by extension close relatives like Megantereon) having exposed sabers.

There’s one thing I always think of when I hear “how could you let it get so bad?” and similar phrases. It’s in the comments of every video of matted hair or a dirty kitchen.
I think the appropriate response is “what would have to happen to you for you to let it get that bad?” And when you think about that question, and the horrifying answers that come with it, you almost certainly have more sympathy for the person you were being judgemental to.
People who let their self-care needs go unmet for long periods of time are only rarely lazy and even more rarely comfortable and happy with that state.
How badly injured would you have to be to say “fuck it” to washing dishes?
How bad would you mental health have to be to give up on brushing your teeth?
How much grief would you have to be in to stop making yourself meals?
And the answer is probably lower than many of us have ever had the misfortune to realize.
I think a genuine problem with the response question is that there are people out there who truly believe that nothing, nothing, could ever stop them from accomplishing what they consider routine tasks. Their mental health could never be so poor, and if it was, surely they could afford either psychological or household help if they really needed it, or they could rely on always having someone around to help for free. There is no version of the world in which those tasks cannot be accomplished.
I don’t even mean wealthy people. I mean regular, middle-class (including upper middle), everyday people. It is utterly inconceivable to some that they wouldn’t always have every bit of support they needed, when they needed it, and that it wouldn’t get done one way or another. “Well, I would never…” they say, because some in that world have so little imagination that even when faced with hypothetically answering “But what would it take?” there is no way for them to think that it wouldn’t always be possible, in some way, to keep their hair washed or their house clean or xyz. There are even those, who, having answered the question, immediately follow it up with, “But that would never happen! It would never get that bad!”
And there is nothing we can do to convince them otherwise. For a person in that kind of world, there is no threshold at which they are so disabled by any circumstances that those tasks remain undone. I think more people like that exist than we realise. What’s more, I’m not even sure how to help them, because I don’t think it’s a failure of compassion—though it often leads to it—it’s a failure of imagination. How do you approach someone so convinced that their personal world is the only version that can even exist, and ask them to consider other possibilities? It would be like asking a squirrel to live underwater.
We are living in a time which has decided to encourage this way of thinking in so many facets, to so prioritise the needs of the individual over the needs of the many that we are starting to lose our capability of imagination. It is not getting better enough. This is the true legacy of the “personal responsibility” mindset and I fear we are succumbing to it because it is all we hear or see, in so many subtle and overt ways.

Please reblog! It's for science! And I want to get as many answers as I can!
Any terf or GC that claims [cis] women can't be abusive should be forced to listen to Jennette McCurdy reading her book I'm Glad My Mom Died.
You cannot convince me otherwise.
as someone who had a REALLY abusive mother I hate it when people assume that women can’t be abusive because GOD SHE RUINED ME
every time a terf says cis women can't be abusive or predatory (or how it's so rare we don't need to bring it up) i have to fight the urge to virtually punch them.
i was sa'd twice as a kid, and both times i was assaulted by a cis woman.
cis women are still human, which means they can engage in behaviour that harms others. terfs refuse to admit this because they think admitting women aren't always victims means they'll lose their status as downtrodden oppressed people.
My mother would've destroyed me. I cut contact with her almost too late.
She ruined my childhood and adolescence. She would've ruined my adulthood, too. Gods know, she tried hard to ruin my marriage.
I was in therapy with a therapist who specializes in trauma for 3 years because of her. I have her to thank for my CPTSD and my wide variety of trauma related psychological problems.
Anybody who cares to ask, my answer is the same: I hate her. I don't care if the next time I see her is to check and make sure she's dead in her coffin.
And there are so many other women, and men, who share similar stories.
Because it is too easy for cis women to play the poor, delicate damsels. They know exactly how to weaponize women's victimhood, to manipulate everyone into believing they're vulnerable and helpless, while they make others' lives utter living hells.
I know this, because I watched my mother do this for decades.

I talk to many people who say things like "oh I have trauma but I don't have PTSD", but then when I talk to them a little more I realize that they most likely do, they just can't recognize it as such due to how lacking PTSD awareness is, even beyond the whole "it's not just a veteran's disorder" thing.
The main reason they think they don't have PTSD usually has to do with flashbacks and nightmares, either they have one but not the other or have neither. But here's the thing, those are only two symptoms out of the 23-odd recognized symptoms. Flashbacks and nightmares are two of the five symptoms under Criterion B (Intrusion), which you only need one of for a diagnosis. The other three symptoms are unwanted upsetting memories, emotional distress after being reminded of trauma and physical reactivity after being reminded of trauma (i.e. shaking, sweating, heart racing, feeling sick, nauseous or faint, etc). Therefore you can have both flashbacks and nightmares, one but not the other, or neither and still have PTSD.
In fact, a lot of the reasons people give me for why they don't think they have PTSD are literally a part of the diagnostic criteria.
"Oh, I can barely remember most parts of my trauma anyway." Criterion D (Negative Alterations in Cognition and Mood) includes inability to recall key features of the trauma.
"Oh but I don't get upset about my trauma that often because I avoid thinking of it or being around things that remind me of it most of the time." Criterion C (Avoidance) includes avoiding trauma-related thoughts or feelings and avoiding trauma-related external reminders, and you literally cannot get diagnosed if you don't have at least one of those two symptoms.
"Oh I just have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, but I don't have nightmares." Criterion E (Alterations in Arousal and Reactivity) includes difficulting sleeping outside of nightmares.
"But I didn't have many/any trauma symptoms until a long time after the trauma happened." There's literally an entire specification for that.
Really it just shows how despite being one of the most well-known mental illnesses, people really don't know much about PTSD. If you have trauma, I ask you to at least look at the criteria before you decide you don't have PTSD. Hell, even if you don't have trauma, look at the criteria anyway because there are so many symptoms in there that just are not talked about.
PTSD awareness is not just about flashbacks and nightmares.
