So I just remembered that the Passover in biblical times was traditionally celebrated by singing Psalms 113-118 after the meal, as they commemorate the Exodus from Egypt as the rest of the festival. And that most people think that when Mark 14:26 mentions Jesus and the disciples singing a hymn after the Last Supper before going out to the Mount of Olives, it was probably these psalms.
And you know what those psalms contain? Messianic prophecy. Can you IMAGINE Jesus singing Psalm 118 -
"The LORD is with me, I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? The LORD is with me; He is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies."
"The LORD's right hand is lifted high; the LORD's right hand has done mighty things!"
"I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done."
"Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter."
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad."
"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD."
"The LORD is God; and He has made His light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join the festal procession up to the horns of the altar." (some versions translate this as tying the sacrifice to the altar)
-on the night He is to fulfill it?!?!
"For you, LORD, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living."
"I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD."
"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His faithful servants."
Imagine Jesus lifting up the cup and instituting the New Covenant. Stumbling carrying the cross. Being bound to the cross as a sacrifice. His right hand lifted high above the earth on the cross to complete the most holy service unto God ever performed. Now He is the gate to the Father through which the righteous may enter. Eyes fixed on the joy set before Him. With these psalms in His mouth.
Are you kidding me right now šš
The devil ain't in the details. God is in the details. And when I think about how carefully He worked out every letter of His word and every second of His life on Earth. All I can do is worship.
