i guess it really depends on how you read the line, but ive never really read it as a joke? even within the script it's self, well it is presented as a light jab between the two, it still feels to be something that's true?

even in the novel which is based off a far earlier script, there's no implication that it's untrue, it's really just how you read the line and I read it as truthful

Two things can be true as well, Spot being leader of Brooklyn could be a rather new development, and he could still have some sort of rep, especially with the iron fist he has, lmao one of Spot's cut lines in the script is being like "guys I gotta go, newsies in brooklyn are worried about what happened at the rally, i gotta go knock some fucking heads" even if he was newish still he CLEARLY already made a name for himself (which when I say new, I imagine Spot has been leader for several months to like a year, I just don't think he's been leader for longer then that)

and ofc there's Jack and Spot's history, it's clear from how they speak to each other and how Spot does genuinely consider what Jack is saying at the end before deciding he still needs proof they have worked together before in the past or whatever the fuck. The thing is about that is PRIOR to the strike, Jack is NOT the leader of the Manhattan newsies in the movie, he certainly has a reputation and is the older brother of the group and defends them, but he is no way shape or form their actual real leader because the Manhattan Newsies are not organized and don't become until the strike

and I just cant really see Spot, even with Jack's rep and stuff, having a history like they do if he was leader of the Manhattan and Jack was still some mf who rode back of a carriage one time, like I think it had to be before Spot was leader when he also just a scrappy ass newsie
