✦ PROJECT HAIL MARY by andy weir —in the style of a 70s sci-fi novel.
“‘It’s not stealing.’ Leaning over the wheel that controlled the car, she grinned suddenly, a manic expression that was not reassuring. 'It’s forgery. At least that’s what the magistrate’s charge will say.’”
— Martha Wells, The Wizard Hunters, 348.
Wanna see this in a show of this. It’ll get gif
woke up this morning to a comment on a fic saying they hoped I didn’t mind them commenting on such an old fic, and the fic isn’t even a year old, so I’m going to reiterate: I can’t speak for every single fanfic writer in the world, but I don’t know a single one myself who wouldn’t be thrilled to get comments on years-old fanfic! there is no deadline! it honestly made my day
My main fandom is the original Star Trek and because there’s been a few diligent groups a lot of the fic from the 60-80 has been digitized digitized and one group is working on bringing everything from the k/s archive to ao3. So just the idea of a year ago being a long time is a little mystifying when I can find a multiple fics from the year I was born

Fakest part of Anne with an E making aunt Josephine explicitly gay is the idea that Anne could be introduced to the concept of lesbianism and not immediately ask diana to marry her on the spot
Fans celebrate the casting of Nichelle Nichols as Uhura as a moment for actors of color, which they should be.
But I also wanted to spotlight the casting of these iconic secondary characters, seen in episodes of TOS.
Percy Rodriguez was cast as flag officer Commodore Stone, who was Kirk's superior in the chain of command. Stone is one of the officers that presides over Kirk's court martial.
Booker Bradshaw was the original Dr M'Benga, seen in two episodes of TOS. at the time, M'Benga was Starfleet's first and only medical specialist in Vulcan Physiology, having spent a year's residency on Vulcan.
One of the finest minds in computer technology in the 23rd century, and creator of the duotronic computer, Dr Richard Daystrom, was played by William Marshall, who's work in Shakespeare, and his roles as Paul Roebson and Frederick Douglass, added to the gravitas of his portrayal.
A flag officer, a specialist in Vulcan medicine, and one of the finest minds in a field of technology, played by actors of color, during the turbulent 1960s.
I wanna highlight M’Benga really quick.
I’m sure if you’ve watched other stuff you know that he’s Nigerian, but Nigeria in the 60s was also one of the best places in the world for medical care so M’Benga is specifically a representation of African greatness at that time and explicitly Nigerian greatness
I’m glad that he’s played by a Nigerian actor in strange new worlds
TOS is a little bit weird about Black people being from America, I don’t know if anybody’s caught that. Are any of them explicitly from America?
M’Benga is Nigerian, Uhura is 🙄 “Swahili”🙄(Swahili is a trade language, it’s not a people group and it’s not a language specific to one group it was made so the west/central west Africans could all trade with each other)
Bitches who tag their spirk fics with AOS and TOS are trying to have their cake and eat it too. It’s ok to write about the old men fucking each other nasty style. You don’t need to hide behind Chris Pine!!!
*slams table*
Crossover, crossover, crossover!
If you tag two peice of media they should crossover
Bruce is unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Clark
okay, when I say Bruce being obsessive and weird is my jam this is the type of thing I’m talking about. Look at this. He has a life sized holographic figure just so he can keep staring at him.
Bruce obsessed over Superman as soon as he showed up then he obsesses over Clark when he’s dead then it’s like he can’t do anything other then keep obsessing over Clark when he’s alive again. And he’s weird about it! “Please don’t look at me so I can keep staring at you” weird

OceanGate, the deep-sea exploration company that created the Titan submersible, has removed its Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn a
poor things, well we should definitely make this easier on them by never repeatedly mentioning their name and deeds on the "reblog things forever" website
yea that'd be a shame
by the way, just so everyone knows what not to do, shift+r reblogs a post instantly
just make sure you don't reblog anything about oceangate because that would completely undermine their entire plan 😇😇😇
You also shouldn't queue a post, that would make people keep remembering this post for a longer time, which is the opposite of forgetting

For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.

Hey everyone. There's a new youtube feature that rolled out just yesterday that's raising some privacy concerns.
People in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Singapore can now share videos and chat with friends directly within the YouTube app. The update bring
This post talks about a new DM feature in youtube. What it fails to mention is that as part of this new feature is that when you send someone a link to a video, and they open it in the youtube app, they will see who sent them the link. Specifically, your channel name.
If your google account name is your real name, so is your channel name by default.
This means the new default behavior is that everyone you send a youtube link to will see your full name if they open it in the mobile app.
To turn this off:
Go to your youtube app settings
Go to Privacy
Turn off "Channel visibility for shared links"
Trimming the source id (the stuff after the '?' in links) will also prevent this from happening.
Air to air combat is the easiest form of warfare to argue that both parties consent to. Dogfighting is basically kink and it should turn you on at least a little.
"yeah this is a totally platonic rivalry" you are literally doing this

DIY Emergency Handwashing Station Instructions Zine
We offer this ‘zine in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020. Our unsheltered relatives cannot simply “stay home if they are sick” and “constantly wash their hands” as instructed by callous politicians who, predictably, had no plans to ensure the wellbeing of our relatives.
We’ve assembled this DIY emergency hand washing station (based on several other models) as a way to support our relatives on the streets. Please replicate and improve these plans and ask unsheltered folx where they would be most useful to them. Let’s take care of each other. Capitalism is pandemic. Colonialism is a plague.
If you purchase all the materials they cost about $25-30 each to make (not including some extras like duct tape etc). These can be made in about 20-45 minutes each (much less time if you are working on multiple at once). Most supplies listed can be donated, scavenged, or liberated.

Mirror-Ball Spiders: these spiders are covered in shimmering, mirror-like panels that shift and expand as the muscles of the abdomen contract
Spiders of the genus Thwaitesia are often described as mirror-ball spiders, because their bodies are lined with reflective panels that make them look like tiny disco-balls. These arachnids are also known as dewdrop spiders or sequined spiders.
Above: two different species of mirror-ball spider
The shimmering panels on the abdomen are produced by a digestive secretion known as guanine, which seeps out through the lining of the spider's gut and forms a mosaic of crystalline cells just beneath the surface of the abdomen.
Above: Thwaitesia argentiopunctata and Thwaitesia margaritifera
The crystals shrink and expand as the muscles in the spider's abdomen contract; they often shrink when the spider is agitated, and they expand as it begins to relax.
Above: the panels expanding and contracting
The adaptive purpose of the shimmering effect is unclear, but researchers believe that it mimics the glistening appearance of raindrops or beads of dew, which could allow the spiders to blend in with their environment.

The reflective panels may also help to confuse predators, as this article explains:
The spider’s decorative patterning may seem like a dead give-away to predators, but for those looking to feast on this arachnid, the hunt might result in confusion and failure.
“Like a disco ball with lots of different mirrors, the reflective splotches on the spider’s abdomen probably scatter light and make it difficult for predators to see it,” says Robert Whyte, an honorary researcher in arachnology at the Queensland Museum.
Above: Thwaitesia affinis
There are at least 22 known species of mirror-ball spider, and their physical features can vary significantly. In some cases, the silver panels on the abdomen are accompanied by colorful, iridescent spots and scales, and the abdomen itself may have a red, orange, green, yellow, or beige appearance.

These spiders are widely distributed throughout the southern hemisphere. They can be found in the tropical and neotropical rainforests of South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, China, Singapore, and Madagascar.

Mirror-ball spiders are not aggressive toward humans, and there are virtually no recorded cases of humans being bitten by the spiders of this genus. They're also tiny, with most individuals measuring just 2-4mm long (roughly 1/10th of an inch), which means that their fangs are often too small to penetrate human skin.
