every other week, my mom would make a giant pot of vegetable soup. she'd pack half of it in a tupperware and take it to her best friend's house. they both had three kids whose ages aligned. they'd lock us out of the house and go through each room, finding every piece of dirty laundry and then spend the afternoon keeping the washer and dryer running, folding and putting away each load while gossiping.
every alternate week, her best friend would come to our house with a tupperware full of chicken spaghetti. they'd stick us in front of a tv with a stack of disney vhs tapes and go through each room, finding every dirty dish, and then spend the afternoon at the kitchen sink, washing each dish by hand while gossiping.
it wasn't always soup and spaghetti and laundry and dishes. but it was almost always a meal and a chore. here is a night you don't have to cook dinner. here is a chore you can cross off your list. and here is a day you don't have to spend alone. because really food and friendship and a feeling of accomplishment are what we all need most.
im going to be real rn i completely understand where hamlet is coming from because if my dad died and then my mom married his brother a MONTH AFTER HIS FUNERAL and THEN everyone told me to just get over it already because everybody dies and THEN i talked to my dad's ghost and tried to get some semblance of closure after his death and he told me "cut the bullshit im burning my sins off in hell rn but its not a big deal listen up your uncle murdered me you gotta get revenge for me" i would also do an acrobatic fucking pirouette backwards off the handle

I don't know that I've ever seen someone make the Aardman Grimace in real life.
Truly a masterclass in harrowingly strained enthusiasm!
If you were handcuffed to your girl blorbo with magical unbreakable handcuffs for 24h, would you be okay with this?
I trust her, I’ll be fine
I trust her, but it’ll be a stressful 24h
It depends on what kind of day we’re having
This is gonna suck…

one of my favourite ideas about elves and the valar is the different perception of time and the miscommunications that follow
The Valar: Finwë has been slain. We should take a moment to think about what we should do, so we don't make any hasty decisions
The Elves: so it's been multiple months since one of us was killed in the place where we were supposedly safe from harm and the Valar are just not going to do anything about it
The Valar: oh, the Noldor are going to Beleriand. This is a stupid idea, but since we can't stop them we're going to let them do their thing for a bit and then we'll come rescue them
The Elves: it has been literal ages that we've been fighting a hopeless fight. I am the great-great grandchild of the Elves that decided to come here, yet I am still being punished for my ancestors' mistake. Our gods have abandoned us.
The Valar: what do we do with elves that misbehaved during their lifetime? Oh I know, we'll give them time out in mandos, maybe they'll think about their actions. And they also have time to heal!
The Elves: I have been cursed to spend eternity in hell
People get jumpscared by house centipedes because they have like one of the fastest land speeds relative to body size among insects, or a lot of mammals, moving about 16 inches (40.6cm) a second, that's why they sometimes seem to appear out of nowhere. Like if you have a ten foot ceiling, a house centipede can go from the floor behind a bookshelf to the ceiling in the time it takes to catch up on your tumblr feed. And they're pretty harmless but also they are wildly overconfident in their ability to hold onto a ceiling.
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

yeah this is gonna be in my head for a while. Rip caterpillar Jiu.
THAT SECOND TO LAST PANEL WAS SO SMART BTW. reblogging so I can come back later to renew my sense of dread. QiJiu and happiness just cannot be in the same room
Hold on, this is fascinating. Reblog this and tell me in the notes how old you are and if you ever had typing lessons.
What in God’s good name is a “typing lesson”
I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not
I’m serious what is a typing lesson? What would they teach you? To type? My brother in Christ it is like writing with a pen but technically easier.
Before home computers were very common, people typically only typed for business-related things, so the only people that actually knew how to use typewriters and word processors were authors, secretaries, accountants, etc. These people would take classes for typing bc it was seen as a skill. This gradually fell out of fashion, much like teaching kids cursive
Typing is only intuitive to gen y & z bc most of us learned through computer games or had someone tell us where to rest our fingers. People who never learned to type use just their index fingers, hit one key, take a long time to find the next letter, hit it with an index finger, and repeat until finished
Also bestie people also very much do get extensively taught how to write with a pen
You probably were taught how to type at least a little bit. Through example and lots of practice if nothing else
On that subject, if you work with Gen Alpha kids, you will notice many of them type like old people -- hunt and peck typing with just their index fingers. For Millennials and Gen Z, we had typing lessons, and later, video games to help us practice hand placement and typing without looking at the keyboard.
The typing classes were gotten rid of a few years back, and if you work with middle schoolers and younger, you can tell. I'm sure you've seen people talking about the rising literacy crisis and how younger people can't navigate anything more than a smartphone or tablet. This is the same thing. I teach sixth grade and proctor state testing for third through eighth, and most of them type like they're 70.
“At that moment Elrond came out with Gandalf, and he called the Company to him. ‘This is my last word,’ he said in a low voice. ‘The Ring-bearer is setting out on the Quest of Mount Doom. On him alone is any charge laid; neither to cast away the Ring, nor to deliver it to any servant of the Enemy nor indeed to let any handle it, save members of the Company and the Council, and only then in gravest need. The others go with him as free companions, to help him on his way. You may tarry, or come back, or turn aside into other paths, as chance allows. The further you go, the less easy it will be to withdraw; yet no oath or bond is laid on you to go further than you will. For you do not yet know the strength of your hearts, and you cannot foresee what each may meet upon the road.’ ‘Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens,’ said Gimli. ‘Maybe,’ said Elrond, ‘but let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.’ ‘Yet sworn words may strengthen the quaking heart,’ said Gimli. ‘Or break it,’ said Elrond.”

goblin-bee: #does gimli, does gimli KNOW he goes through life setting off elves’ first-age-related traumas?, does he ACTUALLY know? was he the elf history nerd in the lonely mountain?, did he spend the entire time in rivendell reading up on people he might be likely to meet?, is this all just– incredible long-con trolling?, legolas figures it out when they get back to rivendell and he won’t stop trying to describe the balrog to glorfindel, and resolves then and there to get him to the undying lands somehow because legolas is 100% on board this asshole train.
