There’s probably a term that already exists for this but if there isn’t I’m gonna call it ‘Rambofication’ in honor of its probably most well known instance: Rambo First Blood was about a soldier, John Rambo (that’s his actual name I’m not doing a bit), returning home from the Vietnam war, so traumatized by war that he brought the war home with him to a small town, unable to adapt to life without strict military discipline and hierarchy. Subsequent Rambo movies were about how John Rambo was the only supersoldier tough enough and patriotic enough to kill faceless hordes of dastardly foreign commies.
Ergo, ‘Rambofication’ is the process of a series starting with a relatively nuanced or subversive narrative before its sequels become a shallow embrace of the very narrative it originally subverted. It happens surprisingly often!

In hindsight, I guess it's obvious that the only way Season 2 was meant to be a bridge was as a bridge from Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, the collaborative effort between Terry Pratchett and NG to Good Omens: The Story of Crowley the Extremely Cool Demon Who Was Also the Best Angel, the story as NG originally envisioned it. And it is equally obvious to me that he did not understand how Crowley had evolved from his original idea and that he resented Aziraphale's inclusion in the story at all. They were never meant to be a couple in his eyes but he was happy to play with the idea as a way to make his self-insert suffering martyr version of Crowley even sadder by turning Aziraphale from a co-main character and equal partner into an unworthy love interest who never really understood him.
And it all just pisses me off because while I can dismiss S3 as a piece of shit written by a piece of shit, part of the legacy it leaves behind is the poisoning of the fandom, now and in the future, against a character I have loved for 30 years.
(I know Crowley was treated very badly by Season 3 too. Please don't @ me to tell me how much worse he had it - that was the intent. They were both done extremely dirty, but you're meant to sympathize with Crowley and to see Aziraphale as cruel.)

Something really gross about how Agnes Nutter is literally the only titular character and how all of her efforts and relevancy in the narrative is rendered null and void by this 'sequel' when she was the narrative, her prophecies were the throughline that connected everything.
Agnes Nutter thought the world was worth saving, so I'm with the Witch on this one guys.
It’s definitely suspect to me how Agnes and her memory completely dropped out of the narrative after season 1 and then became utterly irrelevant thanks to season 3’s resolution.
Terry Pratchett has gone on the record saying that Agnes Nutter was solely his creation: “By agreement, I am allowed to say that Agnes Nutter, her life and death, was completely and utterly mine.”
In retrospect, it’s probably not too surprising that Neil Gaiman wanted nothing to do with a kooky old witch beyond what Terry had already written for her.
if house md were running in 2024 there would be an episode with a patient who identifies as an ‘online content creator’ (cagily) where house agrees to take the case primarily because when he offhandedly refers to her as an onlyfans model both cameron and cuddy get really offended and say it’s a sexist assumption so he doubles down and becomes committed to finding the patient’s onlyfans and proving it. at some point it would be revealed that chase actually is an onlyfans model and started doing it as a stopgap after his dad died and he suddenly got disinherited but he makes so much money off it that now medicine is basically just a hobby. cameron and foreman both disagree with the concept online sex work but it turns out they disagree for different reasons (cameron thinks it’s exploitative and not-feminist, foreman finds it distasteful and thinks people should get ‘real jobs’) and spend most of their scenes together arguing about this while chase gets continually more shifty. they break into the patient’s house and there’s a full ringlight and camera setup which seems to confirm house’s suspicions. while trying to find the patient’s onlyfans house accidentally finds chase’s onlyfans instead and considers publicly embarrassing him about it like he did with wilson’s sex tape but soon realises that most of the staff at the hospital are already subscribed to chase’s onlyfans so makes fun of him for that instead. it then transpires that the reason why the patient is so cagey about being a content creator is that she’s an ASMR artist and all the soap she’s been shaving on camera has irritated her lungs. cuddy is about to make house give her 20 extra hours of clinic duty as recompense but at last minute it’s revealed that the website the patient uses for some of her bonus commissions is, drumroll…onlyfans, because she’s been banned from patreon. how does house know this? wilson is subscribed to her because the soap videos sometimes soothe him to sleep. something by cigarettes after sex plays. roll end credits.

The fact that a story is funny does not make it a comedy. Good Omens the novel has a horror ending for Aziraphale and Crowley (a fact everyone seems to conveniently ignore), and the motifs and themes of the novel are 100% cosmic horror. The show lays out cosmic horror allusions, motifs, and world mechanics from the very 1st episode. It's written by a horror writer. No plot points or story outcomes were revealed after S1 .
"Good Omens is a comedy!" is a bullshit idea the fandom made up instead of paying attention to the material in the novel or the show, and now people are melting down bc reality didn't conform to their baseless belief.
I expected more reasoned responses and a much higher degree of literacy from fans of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Watching the fandom shit itself with entirely unjustified outrage has for me been the most shocking and painful part of Good Omens 3 by far.
Not only did we not make it up, but here’s what I assume is enough proof (although there are many, many other instances of everyone calling it a comedy) since it’s apparently needed:

It won an award from comedy.co.uk for Best TV Comedy Drama and Best Comedy of the Year in 2019 and the former again in 2023. That ^ link is from TP’s website.
It was nominated for a GLAAD award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2024.
David Tennant was nominated for a BAFTA TV award for Male Performance in a Comedy in 2024.
David and Michael were both nominated for an Astra award for Best Actor in a Streaming Comedy Series in 2024.
People on tumblr created at least two polls asking if it was a comedy after season 2 aired and NG (🤬) confirmed it was a comedy. CW: there’s a video of NG accepting the award at the top of the post linked above ^^ There are screenshots below the cut for anyone who wants to see the relevant parts without his face. They still show two extremely short (6 words or fewer) posts from NG.
Uh...where exactly is that "horror ending" supposed to be in the book? That post is NUTS! No one would ever have debated whether GO was a comedy after the book and s1.

Anyways if it helps, on imdb the closest thing is "dark comedy". There's not a trace of "horror" anywhere. On good reads the horror category doesn't even make it to the first 100 tags. Only 136 ppl out of of 46,297 shelved it as horror. What else can I tell you... You're wrong.
Literary genre and "section of the bookstore where the book is kept" are not the same thing. Genre and "category people put things in on goodreads" are not the same thing. Genre and "marketing category for Prime Video" are not the same thing. Genre is determined by what happens in the story, not how imdb or the BAFTAs classify the show. And only genre, not external classification, predicts outcome for the main characters.
And even genre isn't necessarily reliable! Show!Omens technically fits the genre of romantic comedy as well as the genres of cosmic horror, dystopian fiction, and romantic tragedy, but it doesn't fit in the romantic comedy genre in a typical way, and certainly not in a way that feels like romantic comedy.

There are a number of problems with this statement. I don't represent any group, I'm not speaking for anyone else, and I can't answer for things other people have said, so I can't claim to be a "you people." It's just me.
My op is not intended to "come for" anybody. It's definitely venting, but it's not targeted at amyone or any post specifically, and I made it on a different platform than the one where I saw the latest "Good Omens is supposed to be a comedy" statement that inspired it.

Also--and you're the 3rd person I've seen misuse this term today, so you're not alone--media literacy and literacy are not the same thing. I didn't say anything at all about media literacy.
Media literacy is awareness of the sources and biases in media as part of distinguishing reliable information from unreliable information. Literacy is the ability to glean information from a text and analyze that information in order to reach conclusions about it.
"The finale is good writing," which I also did not say, and "Good Omens is not a comedy," which I did, are not examples of "gaslighting." They're just opinions--subjective statements. People having different opinions--even bad ones--doesn't mean they're trying to gaslight you. That's not what gaslighting is.
Gaslighting is denying events in physical reality to make the victim feel crazy. "There were never any cookies" spoken around a mouthful of cookies is an example of gaslighting.
Opinions also aren't "headcanons." Headcanons are beliefs about in-universe events. "Neo cuts his own hair with nail scissors" would be a headcanon. "The Matrix is religious allegory" would be an opinion.
I acknowledge that there's plenty in my original post to disagree with, even to take offense at, but I want to be clear on what I said and didn't say and what the terms I used mean.
Actual book dealer here! Here's the record on Ingram showing Good omens BISAC categories. BISAC is the system used by most publishers, distributors, and bookstores in North America for determining what category books belong in.
Individual bookstores may vary on which of the potential categories they physically stick it in for purposes of customers finding it, but the computer inventory likely still puts it in all of them when they start filtering or searching.
That Christian/ Biblical category mostly includes a lot of historical fiction but has a few other oddball things that probably would now be assigned to a more specific category that didn't exist previously.
Larger Fiction/Christian category includes things like the Love Inspired romances, Left Behind, and all the historical spec fic about "what if Pope Something was actually a woman!" It's a broad category.
I don't think most booksellers would shelve Good Omens with their historical fiction about Abraham, but that's why there's multiple options. Nor would they put it in general humor fiction next to Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon series.
Which then lands it in either fantasy or scifi. If they have the space for it, they might pull out an additional subgenre but it's still likely located next to the main category.
Okay, now let's look at some other versions of Good Omens and their BISAC categories!
Radio Adaptation on CD. this has wildly different secondary categories, but I think that may be because more categories had been made. Generally an item won't be recoded for BISAC by a publisher unless there's a brand new edition. This falls in that category, so much tighter coding here.
The script book for the show.
The TV Companion. There are all NONfiction BISAC categories, so will not map as directly to other versions. But is specifically about the *show*. Comedy is in there, though.
The old audio book from 2009, before the show, but newer than the original book.
BISAC is only used for books and audiobooks, so I can't pull a record for a DVD of the show.
But the one category that all these agree on: Fiction/Fantasy/Humorous. (and the television guide selected Comedy as the genre)
There's quite a variety of tags between all those versions! But no horror.
And just to round it off "well maybe it should be in the horror category and under horror comedy!"
Not how BISAC works as of 2026. No subgenre of comedy inside horror.
Humor only has two subdivisions. General and Dark. Satire is actually a whole different fic category entirely! Genre based humor will be nested inside its larger genre as you can see with the redirects there IF there's sufficient number of items being published to warrant it as a subgenre. Horror clearly hasn't been generating enough comedy to warrant its own subgenre for coding purposes that isn't adequately addressed by just putting it in both Horror and Humorous/Dark Humor

TLDR: the entire publishing industry thinks it goes in Fantasy/Humorous and thus has marketed it as such.

One of the many downsides of the Hail Mary being a suicide mission is that Armando is likely only equipped to keep astronauts alive for as long as they're useful to the mission.
Obviously this is going to be reflected in the amount of painkillers and general medicines he's been supplied with— enough for three astronauts to last several months to a few years max— but also… there's really no point in keeping any of those astronauts alive after they stop being useful to the mission.
Grace finds this out when he gets to a certain point in his starvation on the journey to Erid and, instead of offering medical advice, Armando announces that Doctor Grace is far too sick to continue being of use and so it’s recommended that his fellow crew members euthanise him to save on resources.
That is. Not a good day for shipboard morale.
