Original post by @morallygrayautisticscientist here, this post was so funny I decided to draw it lol.
Panel by panel below:
âbits to use in everyday conversationsâ
dad lore
Iâve nixed most of the murder in my warriors anthro au but Mapleshade remains the same (now with a shlocky movie adaptation!)
"If you were sent back in time to before we died - back to the mission for the SM-13 - and you knew how it would end, how I would die, would you still choose to send me down in it?â
First she processes what he says, then she chews on it, digests it. A bit of the nausea comes back. She swallows it down like she always has.
âYou make it sound like I had a choice.â She pauses. âBut if I had one, I donât know. I - I donât like to think about it. Thereâs no use dwelling on it.â
Simon hums. âMaybe not.â
The silence is an agreement to words unspoken. Thereâs no solid yes or no. There are circumstances, and then there are necessary sacrifices. Sheâs good at sacrifice. Not that she wants to be.
âThe ends justify the means, donât they?â He says softly. âWhy is it always me that suffers for the means?â
She doesnât have a response. Nor does she sleep that night.

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal senseâ it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.

I think Ava IronLung is neat.
Iâve started using chewing sticks to brush my teeth and tbh Iâm surprised that zero waste people arenât all over these things.
Chewing sticks are basically sticks from specific trees that you strip some of the bark off, chew to loosen up the inner fibers, and then brush your teeth with said fibers. You cut off the fibers every other day and strip off more bark so the sticks also force you to keep replacing your toothbrush a bit better than normal ones do because youâre literally whittling them down to nothing over time.
No toothpaste required because the sticks naturally have fluoride in them and being, you know, sticks, theyâre biodegradable by nature. So no plastic from the toothpaste because there is no toothpaste and no plastic from the stick because itâs a stick.
Some brands sell them wrapped in plastic but you know, not all of them do that. And you can get a reusable container to put them in when youâre not using them.
But because zero waste people are super into finding complicated ways to reduce plastic usage I was surprised Iâve never heard of these things being discussed in the zero waste YouTube channels Iâve watched. They talk about like bamboo toothbrushes and refillable toothpaste and whatnot. Not chewing sticks.
Iâm using them because I can just keep one in my pocket in its little container and theyâre super stiff and my gums need strengthening according to my hygienist. (Note if you decide to use these things your gums might bleed the first few times because the fibers are so stiff)
Iâm not really using them for environmental reasons but they seem like the sort of thing that extreme tree huggers would like. But no, the only people using chewing sticks seem to be me and people trying to make sure they donât accidentally swallow toothpaste during Ramadan.
I think over the years Iâve realized that assuming people you donât understand are stupid by default is just like a mental shortcut to avoid having to think about why people act the way that they do.
Iâve kind of gotten tired of people doing that I guess. I used to do it, so I get it, but Iâve also figured out that you can learn a lot if you donât assume by default that people are stupid. Almost everyone is fairly intelligent in some form or another, actually.

I love how clearly the despair and deprivation of the world of âIron Lungâ is communicated through two small and, I think, often misunderstood actions that Simon takes throughout the film. Iâve seen quite a few people laughing about how âsillyâ it is that he gets a small cup of isopropyl alcohol and then just drinks it, or immediately bolts the entire canteen of water he finds. But to me, that is a wordless means of communicating the world that he lives in and the exact state of mind heâs in.
Simon lives at the end of everything. There are only a few thousand people left alive, and both humans and everything else are dwindling resources. EVERYTHING is running out, including time.
Simon has likely never lived in a world where he had time, or was guaranteed his next meal, his next breath, his next moment. Drinking all the water as soon as he finds it not only speaks to how long heâs likely gone without water (because why would you waste more precious food or water on a convict that is almost certain to die at the bottom of a blood ocean beyond what is base-line necessary to keep him functional?), but it also shows a survival strategy. If everything is scarce, then trying to ration resources opens you up to having someone else take them away. Itâs likely to be an instinct at this point: if he gets something, he consumes it immediately before someone else can take it from him. And that instinct is so ingrained that he does it right away, and then recriminates himself afterward. He has these mechanisms for survival that are betraying him, but the instinct is hard to overcome.
The rubbing alcohol moment is another great moment of world-building (and also a great moment of levity in a very grim film). Here is this tiny cup of alcohol, part of a barely-there first aid kit. Heâs got bandages, and heâs got alcohol.
And he drinks the alcohol rather than using it on his injuries. Simon exists in a world of despair, in a near-hopeless situation after a string of near-hopeless situations, after being raised in a damn death cult. Why would he use that alcohol to prevent an infection he is almost certainly never going to have time to develop? Why would he care about a hypothetical maybe-future when he had to deal with isopropyl poisoning? He is staring down death.
Why not indulge in a moment of chemical escape? Why not give yourself that moment of oblivion? If there is no future, there are no consequences. So he drinks the alcohol, and itâs both funny and this exquisitely human moment of relief for him.Â
I feel like so many people arenât engaging with the layers of despair and loss and hopelessness that even Simonâwho is noticeably a defiantly hopeful person even in the face of everythingâcannot escape and is thoroughly steeped in. His every action speaks to the world he lives in, and how he fights against it but is still defined by it. And Iâm hoping that, now that the film is readily available for rent or purchase, people can really dive into the world and the story and everything created in this film. I am really hoping for a new surge of meta and dissection as people start seeing all the subtleties put in, and the care it took to tell you a story with very little dialogue.
Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says âno eyes⌠no nose⌠no face. Donât trust.â To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.
Cybertruck. It was a cybertruck.

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"
