Today's wasp of the day is Thyreodon atricolor!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
For an ichneumon, this wasp is considered relatively easy to distinguish thanks to it's large size (roughly 30-35 mm), choice of hosts (sphinx moth caterpillars), and it's sleep schedule (it being diurnal, while most other members of it's subfamily are nocturnal). Many of the writings I found on them describe their flying style as "lazy" or "leisurely", but a few observation posts also mentioned how these wasps rarely stop to rest, possibly the reason why there's such a serious lack of information on these tiny dragons.
Yeah sorry wasp haters but y’all don’t know shit. Have you ever even seen the cuteness of Bembicini?

The look of inner conflict: trying to decide whether to leave her post guarding the nest or not for a piece of mango
(I couldn't bribe her in the end, she takes her job seriously)
Today's wasp of the day is the yellow-headed hairy flower wasp (Scolia vericalis)!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
This wasp can often be found rooting around in mulch or woodchips in search of beetle grubs to lay her eggs on. Her other extracurriculars include slurping nectar from native flowers (and by proxy pollinating them) and finding a nice stick or reed to curl up around or dangle off of.

I had this Wikipedia screenshot on my desktop of the American Woodcock's page from 2023
Anyway, I went back to the page today in 2026 and
I really like that people looked at that first list and were like "it needs more"
Reminds me of this one time I used Seek to identify a plant I didn’t recognize.
