I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Hippie church moms donating quinoa chips to my local food bank have done more for me materially than any internet idealist ever has.
People get pissed at me for being a pragmatist in my political ideals but I’ve been in the position where I was out of food right now.
And who helped me with that? Not people calling for some nebulous revolution. Not people telling me that the system was useless. Not people preaching at me to grow my own food. It was a church food bank partially funded by the state of Texas that some southern hippies donated a bunch of Whole Foods nonsense to.
And you know what? I’m sick and tired of defeatism. What can we get done right now, huh? Are you gonna accept something a bit better to help people right now or are you waiting for your perfect utopia to come to you?
Yeah, UBI is better than the quinoa chips. Sure. But right now the quinoa chips are stopping people from going hungry and if all we can do is get the food bank quinoa chips to more people, then I say so be it. That’s something. I’ll almost always take baby steps over nothing.

Has anyone considered this, I'm sure they have, but a little space for your inner child on the altar with trinkets your inner child would like and their own candle with favorite colors at the time. And I don't mean in the means of worship, of course, but an exercise of healing and being like: hey, I see you, always have seen you, I hear you, and you were a kid.
I've thought about it recently because my traumas come from childhood and I've often kind of ignored that side of myself. She's shown up in tiny ways recently with my Strawberry Shortcake obsession. But I don't know, I think this idea came from my internal thought process with Apollo, on healing and where that starts.
Tired, scared, depressed people are easier to control and less likely to fight back. It is quicker to temporarily feed anxiety with trinkets than to create structures to dismantle and prevent anxiety.
It is not your fault if you are exploited in these ways. You are not weak, or bad, or "not trying hard enough" if you feel the weight of the world upon you, if it takes all you have just to survive. It's okay if you have ups and downs, if one day you're able to do many things and the next barely get out of bed. You did not create the system we are all trying to function within, one that punishes what it cannot exploit.
But your ongoing survival is a message that you are not defeated. Every single moment you are here offers the opportunity to try again, to be better, to grow and change and learn. Missed the last opportunity? That's okay, another one will come along any moment now, and the next, and the next. You just choose which one is the best for stepping aboard a new pathway, when you're ready. If it takes a while because you are, in fact, tired, scared, depressed, that's okay. There are many, many moments before you and who knows what could go right?
Self-care is rebellion. Joy is a radical act. Love--given to others, and above all to yourself--is a key part of the antidote to what ails us. Even if your embodiments of these are not big and momentous, they are no less important a part of your ongoing story, and the weaving of a better world.

making this response post about my personal warding systems inspired me to describe some methods of warding, especially for those of us with low energy or little time.
i will eventually be posting a more extensive version of this post as an article on my substack.
layered wards are nested within each other; from innermost to outermost, i've organized them as: the body, the bed(room), the home, the property, and spiritual allies.
the body
if your hair is long enough, braiding the hair can be utilized as a potent protective method, to tie up spirits and negative energies within it.
if you regularly wear makeup, it can be incanted over to protect from the evil eye, and/or from negative energy intrusions.
bracelets may be enchanted for protective purposes; traditional protective bracelets include those with blue and red braids, or charms of cross, cornicello, hamsa, nazar, serpent, or phallus.
the lords prayer was traditionally written and stored within the shoe for protection throughout the day.
a stronger protective charm may be created that is not worn every day, such as a SATOR square charm bag, or a jar of iron nails.
the bed(room)
a spell pouch underneath the pillow is a common contemporary spell for aiding sleep, hedgewitchery, and/or psychic dreams.
an open pair of scissors under the bed is a traditional(?) method of deterring nightmares.
witch balls or witch's ladder may be hung in windows to trap spirits attempting to enter.
the home
traditional wards over the home include the horseshoe, bulbs of garlic, witch bottles & balls, prayers & psalms over the house (such as within Carmenica Gadelica), to cross upon the hearth the iron fire-tools, the stuck heart, carving sigils into door frames, floor washes, incense, & crosses.
traditional delineators of home boundaries include go-away powder, salt, cascarilla, graveyard or church dirt. in hoodoo traditions goofer powder may be employed.
the property
a traditional property ward is the hedge or "witch's lump" figure, described by Gemma Gary:
To protect farm land, and all that lies within its boundaries, take small amounts of earth from the north, south, east and west of each piece of land that is to fall under the protection of the charm, remembering to collect also dirt or dust in the same way from each of the farm’s buildings. Mix these small samples together, and work them well into a lump of rough clay (even better if the clay used can be dug from the land to be protected), crafting this into a human but sexless form. As the body is worked, so the Pellar breathes life into it. The figure’s garments must then be set with small panels of broken glass. Once fired, set the figure somewhere within one of the farm’s hedges, so that it may keep a protective watch over the land and all that lies within.
farm-building specific charms can be found in Gemma Gary's texts ("To Protect Farm Buildings and their Contents"), as well as in Carmenica Gadelica.
traditional delineators of property boundaries include buried witch bottles, & protective blackthorn or hawthorn hedges.
spiritual allies
a contemporary method of spiritual allyship for protection is befriending and asking local nature spirits around you for protection (or other petitions) – especially trees, creeks, and birds of prey.
traditionally, specific trees would be planted on the property for this purpose; here is an excerpt from The Black Toad by Gemma Gary:
The Bay is to be planted by thresholds to impart a protective influence upon the home...The climbing Ivy, grown up the walls of the cottage, creates a verdant shell of protection around the home...To impart protections upon the home, the Rowan may be planed near doorways.
other areas you may benefit from warding:
an office or place of work
your name or reputation
vehicles
pets & livestock
gardens

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced in him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

The amount of my own hair I have inadvertently worked into my crochet projects would make crochet utterly unsuitable for anything related to how I work witchcraft. Crochet will have to remain a totally utilitarian pursuit for me, I fear.

Hello internet user whose entire concept of feminism comes from tiktok. In front of you are three ancient myths about women. You have five minutes to figure out which one of them was made up in the 1970s. If you choose wrong, you will be ripped to pieces by Maenads.
Okay since everyone wants the test, instead of giving you three myths here’s several myths. One of them is a real Greek myth with sources of it from ancient times and the rest of them are fake. One of the misconceptions was specifically invented in the 70s.
1. In every version of the myth, Medusa is born a human and Athena turns her into a monster
2. Hestia, goddess of the hearth and family, willingly gave up her place as the 12th Olympian to make room for Dionysus
3. Persephone chose Hades and wandered into the underworld of her own free will
4. Pandora didn’t know what was in her jar and unleashed evils on humanity by accident
5. During the voyage of the Argonauts the huntress Atalanta beat the hero Peleus the father of Achilles in a wrestling match
6. King Midas of Phrygia decided to give up his golden touch after turning his daughter to gold
7. Aphrodite was widely worshipped as a war goddess in Greece
Hiding the answers under a cut in case you wanna guess on your own.
#5 is the real one. You can find a reference to Atalanta wrestling Peleus at funeral games while on the journey of the Argo in The Library by Pseudo-Apollodorus.
This is an artistic depiction of the event from a piece of pottery currently being held in Staatlishe Museum Berlin.
The one invented in the 1970s was the one about Persephone going down to the underworld herself. This was invented by Charlene Spretnak in her book Lost Goddesses of Early Greece and is often spread falsely as a real myth without crediting her.
Ovid invented the version where Medusa was originally a woman and Ovid hated most of the gods on principle. Also, he was Roman. The earliest versions of gorgon myths depict her and her sisters as being born as monsters.
There's no reference in ancient mythology to Hestia giving up her spot. In some regions she was one of the 12 Olympians, and in others Dionysus was on the list instead. The idea that she stepped down was invented by modern writers who like to have coherent logic in their stories.
Explained above. A bit of creative writing.
Pandora according to Hesiod was the first woman and perfectly aware of what was in her jar. She was created as part of the punishment for mankind. Human women didn't exist before Pandora according to Hesiod. But because Hesiod was misogynistic even by ancient Greek standards, writers and artists after the ancient Greek religion died out re-characterized her as stupid and curious rather than evil.
5. As explained above, real.
6. This version was invented by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In the original myth, Midas just got hungry. No Daughter involved.
7. Aphrodite was worshiped as a war goddess mostly in Sparta and sort of Rome as Venus. Most Greeks weren't comfortable culturally with the idea of a goddess of love also being a goddess of war so in most of Greece she was just a goddess of love.
i know most leftists agree that everybody should have a right to food, water, shelter, and healthcare but i think a vitally important fifth pillar is privacy. people should not be compelled to be tracked, monitored, or to share personal space with others to access their other essential rights

After a long time, another finished illustration from J.R.R. Tolkien's books. I experimented a bit with the composition. I wanted to achieve a dramatic moment and contrast between water and fire. But at the same time I tried to capture the atmosphere and lore of the book.
Bard the Bowman is depicted as a true archer captain (not as a smuggler), and there is also an old thrush. I was inspired by Tolkien's original illustrations of Lake town. The Big Dipper constellation is also shown here, because at the beginning of this chapter it is written that a few people from Lake Town were walking around and looking at the stars (typical of Tolkien...😊), as they liked, shortly before the dragon arrived. The highest star of this constellation also symbolically points to the dragon's weakness.
The Big Dipper constellation is mentioned a few chapters earlier, when Bilbo was traveling with raft-elves along the Forest River towards the Long Lake...
I started painting this illustration about a year ago, but... for a long time I didn't make any progress because I didn't know how to continue. Long expected-illustration!😅
This illustration is painted with acrylic paints on paper in size 210x297mm.
