So I finished that batman essay-
2 things, turns out I read the thing wrong and its not like 10 pages I have to write, it was 10 sources I needed to have, I complained about it to my friend and they told me I read it wrong.... And the second thing is I'm not even sure If I'm allowed to post it cause technically the collage board owns it- But like from what I've read, I'm allowed to post it after the deadline, which was april 30th, so it's been like 2 day... so it should be fine- Anyway here it is.
The Effects of Media on Mental Health
RQ: How do depictions of loneliness and mental illness in the media affect the way people perceive the topics in their personal lives?
Individual Written Argument
April 2026
Word count:1542
Around 20–25% of the population experiences some form of mental or neuropsychiatric disorder, yet less than half receive the help they need (Hawley, 2016). With nearly ¼ of the population having a diagnosis of some form of mental illness, it is important to see the influence that the media has by its depiction of mental illness. With most modern media trying to be more inclusive, it often means that they build characters up in different ways to try and make them more relatable. However, if the things they try to portray are inaccurate, it can have a negative effect on the way people perceive them. As well as if things are ‘popularized’ or ‘romanticized’ illnesses and mental disorders such as depression, PTSD, and Anxiety, it could cause certain attributes of those mental disorders to be seen as just regular things. With new generations growing up online and more information being easily accessible, it is important to portray these topics as realistic as possible. Even more so, after the recent events in the world which has caused more people to feel lonely and more to become diagnosed with things such as anxiety. With studies such as the ones conducted by the Office of the Surgeon General of the United States, it can show us how being lonely affects the people who experience it. They state that being lonely could be one of the worst things to allow a person to feel, causing health problems while stating, “increased levels of social connection can improve various biomarkers of cardiovascular functioning, including blood pressure, cardiovascular reactivity, and oxidative stress“ ( Office of the Surgeon General of the United States 2023). So having a place you can go, and a community is important for people to have. Community can come in any shape or place with source A’s community being a coffee shop with the source stating how “The activity of visiting a coffee shop through repeated practices, interactions and interventions can create a sense of belonging and a ‘public familiarity’” (Blokland, 2017). With belonging being very important when you are struggling with mental illness, since it allows the person to have a faster recovery when they are supported. This topic is important to know about because it can affect many people and you will not realize it. By examining media through artistic, social, and psychological lenses, we can better understand its impact. This brings up the question of how depictions of loneliness and mental illness in media affect the way people perceive the topics in their personal lives. With so much representation now, it is important to see the way it affects people.
From an artistic perspective, creators shape how mental illness is presented through characters and storytelling. While many writers try to make characters more relatable, these portrayals are not always accurate. For example, Harvey Dent (Two-Face) is often associated with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), but his violent and unstable behavior exaggerates the condition for dramatic effect. These creative choices may make stories more engaging, but they can distort reality and misinform audiences about what mental illness actually looks like. Wahl states “Direct stigma can be harmful… persons with mental illness may also be impacted by indirect stigma”. When people develop a mental illness, their own ideas and beliefs about mental illness may dramatically influence their recovery. When examining public conceptions of mental illness, it has been noted that media is influenced by the times and attitudes from which it was created. The community in which an artist is in can contribute to the way they write characters. When the character Batman™ was created in 1939, it was a time when hope was needed with it being just after the great depression but the beginning of world war II. They needed characters that not only helped inspire the people, but also teach them that not everything was as bad as it seemed, with one expert stating “The Great Depression called for heroes who could set an example by showing how to solve the biggest problems in times of crisis and, thus, demonstrate how to cope with individual difficult situations.” (Reichstein 1998). Meanwhile films play a major role in shaping how society views the world, highlighting both positive and negative aspects of life while also providing entertainment and emotional connection. For example, movies like The Batman present a world that is different from our own but still relatable. As S. Reghintovschi states, “Batman’s history reflects our history for many decades,” despite how things in the world of Batman are exaggerated, people can still make a connection with the media and relate to the way things are portrayed.
Through a social lens, media influences how people treat and perceive others with mental illness. When audiences repeatedly see harmful stereotypes, they may begin to associate those traits with real people. For instance, portrayals like Harvey Dent can lead to the belief that individuals with DID are dangerous or unpredictable. These first impressions can persist, shaping biases and reinforcing stigma. Consequently, people with mental illnesses may feel judged or misunderstood in their everyday lives. Media strongly shapes how people understand mental illness, and research shows some negative effects. Perry et al. found that many people do not view adult depression as serious, suggesting a lack of public understanding. This can be linked to how depression is often minimized or oversimplified in media, making it seem like something people should just “get over” rather than a serious condition that affects daily life, relationships, and wellbeing. At the same time, Morrison notes that the media often links psychiatric disorders to villainous characters, creating harmful associations between mental illness and danger. Together, these portrayals can distort public understanding by making mental illness seem either trivial or threatening, which reinforces stigma and can discourage people from seeking help. In a study done by Rosenfeld, he found out that “To change, to receive help, implies weakness and is experienced as wrong or as a failure by the destructive narcissistic organization which provides the patient with his sense of superiority”. In this study, he looked at many different people who were diagnosed with a mental illness. They were all from different backgrounds and came from different places, but the one common thing that he found was that the people saw getting treatment as a personal failing. They saw that them getting help was a sign of weakness and often tried to refuse service that could have helped them. When Rosenfeld looked deeper, he had seen that these people also had a predetermined narrative when it came to people with mental disorders. Often seeing them as either over-dramatic or weak, making people less inclined to get the help they need.
From a psychological perspective, media impacts how people understand their own experiences with mental illness and loneliness. Research shows that loneliness can have serious effects on mental and physical health, influencing brain function and emotional well-being. Characters like Batman reflect this, as Bruce Wayne experiences deep isolation after his parents’ death. His story shows both the lasting impact of trauma and the possibility of resilience. However, the media can sometimes oversimplify these struggles, making recovery seem easier than it is, which may create unrealistic expectations for those experiencing similar issues. At the same time, the media often exaggerates or misrepresents mental illness in other ways. As Morrison points out, characters in popular media—like villains—are frequently labeled with psychiatric disorders. This can create harmful associations between mental illness and danger or instability. These harmful associations are also known as stereotyping, and as defined by the oxford dictionary, stereotyping is when ‘beliefs or judgements about people based on fixed ideas about them which are often not true’. Some stereotypes that have come from the media are that everyone with psychiatric disorders are dangerous, which can cause people to fear those with the disorders. These harmful stereotypes can come from simply making a villain ‘insane’. An example of this is the character Professor Pyg, another one of Batman’s rogues, who is portrayed as a psychopath who physically alters his victims. While another stereotype is that you can always tell when someone is mentally ill, this usually stems from the previous stereotype, since most people assume that they would all act that way. Either way, both stereotypes are harmful to the people who have these diagnoses, not only because it makes them less inclined to seek help, but also because it can cause others to dismiss their struggles if they do not fit those visible stereotypes.
By looking at media through artistic, social, and psychological lenses, it becomes clear that representation has a powerful impact. The way mental illness and loneliness are portrayed can shape how people understand these experiences, how they treat others, and even how they view themselves. Inaccurate or exaggerated depictions can reinforce harmful stereotypes, discourage people from seeking help, and create unrealistic expectations about recovery. On the other hand, thoughtful and accurate representation can promote understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage support. Ultimately, these portrayals influence not only how society views mental illness, but also how individuals respond to it in their own lives. Because of this, it is important for media creators and audiences alike to be more aware of how these topics are presented and interpreted.

I'm bored, so ima post my prompts/summary's for fics I've been thinking on writing. I may end up writing them, I might not. Either way you can use them if you want, or make works inspired by them, just tag me or something-
They're mostly angst-
Work 1: Maybe Everything is his Fault
Or, Jason had been screaming at Bruce for the memorial in the batcave, the batkids all supporting Jason. Bruce meanwhile, has no idea what he’s talking about, he never made a memorial for him. All the costumes are in storage once they are no longer used.
OR, Bruce can not see the memorial, Alfred made it, not bruce, feelings are hurt
Work 2: Did you get Enough Love, My Little Dove?
TW: for mention of suicide
“He doesn’t love us, he never loved us! This just proves it!” They all decided then, to leave, take all the ones underage, and leave, no contact, no presence. Bruce having no idea what he did wrong just spirals, he leaves the league, only focusing on Gotham. Months later the news reports on the death of the billionaire, the JL being crushed at the loss of their friend still put his contingency into play, giving his kids his personal items and the journal he kept at the watchtower. Dick and Jason get rid of the journal, only for Tim to dig it up and read it. Feelings are had and regret is had.
Or, batkids leave bruce and he sinks to his lowest yet, letting himself die instead of fighting like he usually would. Alfred finds him, changes him into a Brucie outfit and crashes the car to make it look like he was drunk. Batkids skip the funeral, JL attends in civvies, feeling are had
OR, the Batkids are assholes and lead their father to kill himself
Work 3: How Could you be so Cruel?
Tim knew Bruce couldn’t process feelings and emotions like they all could. He knew Bruce didn’t mean to hurt any of them, and he’s tired of his siblings saying that he doesn't feel anything and doesn't love them. So he does what he does best, capture photos of his adoptive father acting fatherly towards them, subtly giving them to his siblings to see. Only for them to ignore every hint Tim gives them, every reminder that their father cares. So Tim stops, if his family weren’t going to see how they treated their father, he would just treat them like they treated him.
Or Tim tried to get his siblings to see how horrible they all were to their dad only for them to ignore it. So he decides to act the same way to them, which ends up with them ignoring Tim more than they already do.
OR Tim trying to get the batkids to treat Bruce better and decides he’d treat Bruce the way he deserves to be treated, and treat the others the way they treat Bruce.
Work 4: How did you get in Here?
(on my notes it's called 5 Nights at Wayne's)
Tim was a lonely child, but that was fine, he didn’t need people. He could easily entertain himself, he had toys, tv, and a camera. He was fine, but it did get boring after a while. So when he and his family were invited to a Wayne Gala, aka BATMANS home, he was able to sneak off and explore. Of course no one noticed that he was gone until the gala ended and everyone went home. Tim was left in the manor, with the Wayne’s, he was able to explore- too bad they thought someone broke in…
Or Tim stays in the manor past a gala, the Bats think someone broke in and try to find them. Tim is having the time of his life exploring.
Work 5: Flowers fit for a Funeral.
TW: Mentions of death
also throwback to hanaki disease- uh this was written when I had a fever, like most of the things I write-
Tim knew he was dying. He knew why, he could easily solve it, they had the tools to remove the flowers from his lungs. But removing them meant accepting he was unlovable. He already had this disease once, cured the way he knew was possible. It hurt to know his love wasn’t returned from his parents, but it was fine, they were dead now anyway. But even after being adopted by Bruce Wayne. Finally being part of a family, they still didn’t love him, he still had these flowers in his lungs. He coughed, bloody and roughly, petals from multiple plants coming up. None of them loved him, and there was proof, he might as well let the disease take him.
OR Tim Drake is unlovable and doesn't tell anyone of the hanaki disease he is infected with. Angst ensues.
Work 6: An Angel Sent From Heaven
Dick should have died, he knew he was going to die. He had passed out from blood loss mid mission, no way someone didn’t find him and capture him. But- here he was, awake and tucked safely behind a cargo container…
Or Jason's ghost finds and unconscious Dick and shields him with his cap
That's all I have for now- uh feel free to use them?
Tell me why I'm writing a paper on Batman for my AP class. I proposed the idea as a joke and now I'm writing a 10 page paper on how Batman's depiction of mental health affects people and the way they think about mental illness.
Like it started as a joke, but my professor loved the idea and told me to write it. So now I've read like 10 different sources by people with PHD's who are just talking about batman and the rouges while adding some sciencey things like statistics.
I get to present an 8-10 minute presentation on Batman in front of my whole class, for a grade. My life can not be real right now. I have like 3 weeks to write this.
Dr. Steven Hawley is such a saint for this, his analysis is helping so much....
This is his paper by the way

Does anyone know any large blogs I can tag in this? I'll edit this to tag who I can remember and who I'm reminded of. If anyone would like to be removed as well, please let me know and I will. Refer to the original post when reblogging as well.
A lot of people are making pillowfort accounts, I'd recommend doing so in case this doesn't go away.
I think this time we should do it on the 18th, and make it last 48 hours.
@not-offical-offical @the-bone-eating-vulture tagging you both so you can tag the siblings, I'd tag them but then I wouldn't have enough tag space for larger blogs.

I may be going slightly insane cause I'm sick rn, but I kinda just wrote a prophecy for a fic I'm writing- but like- I don't know what possessed me to. And I'll just like post a bit of the section I guess? I don't really post the fics I write. It's kinda more like a summary of the fic though, I don't know-
The day will come when the demons head gets his heir.
The heir so mighty , will never fall.
And so his empire will never end.
All hell will rise, devils fly, the demons heir will lead the mass.
All that's holy in the past.
A child will rise, so pure of light, lead the heavens against his might.
Damian was told this multiple times, he knew the prophecy by heart. He was trained to be ready for the day he met his match. His grandfather made sure of it. But after all his years out of the league, after training with his Father, Grayson, and the Titans, he was led to believe that this was one of the lies the league told him. Why should he believe that this was a real prophecy?
There was no way for it to be real. Years have past, nothing came up, he was a hero now. He was Robin...
And yet, he always got this strange feeling whenever he stayed near Jon to long... he grew tired, movements slower... it was probably just his mind playing tricks on him...
And that's all I'm giving you cause yeah. Idk, I'm tired.
uh hi, is this posted yet? Can I read it yet??
Nah not yet, I'll update you when I do post it though, if you want.
Are you aware of Damian's son that looks like your son Jon?
Did Damian and Jon have a kid together? :0
I was not aware of this!
How did you not know- It was this whole ordeal- Here's a photo of him- His name's Alfred.
@alfie-wayne
AW!!! He's adorable! Oh my gosh, I'm a grandfather! :D
Congrats on the expanding of your family!!!! It's already really big but who cares. More supers. Yay!

Considering you don't exactly need food at least under the yellow sun, are you technically a plant? Hey do you have leaves or maybe your skin is considered one... *Immediately asking you this after you saved me*
I've spent my entire life on this planet, so participating in the human routine of 3 meals a day has become habit for me, even though I don't really need to eat. But no, I'm not a plant ahaha.
That's what a plant would say.... *eyes suspiciously*
oh my gosh.
*Clark shakes his head.*
Y'all, I'm not a plant. I'm Krytonian, an alien from another planet..
Getting mighty defensive about not being a plant...
kinda suspicious....
Wha- I'm not getting defensive! I... *sigh*
Whatever you want to believe.
Do you think you'd go good in a salad?
Okay okay, I get it, your more like a flower, pretty, nice to look at.... sometimes edible.
