I work for the road crew in the summer. Crack sealing (the process you see above) is fairly quick and simple. (Though holding a hose that pumps literal tons of 350F tar into the road in the middle of the summer is NOT easy)

I think what a lot of people underestimate is just how much road there is in your city. And just how many directions the crew gets pulled.

For our city of around 50k people there are 8 of us.

Also, crack sealing is a wholly temporary measure, meant to slow the break-up of the roads, it’s not a permanent fix.

Roads tend to get closed for months on end because we have to tear the whole thing up, then, depending on the class of road, we either have to hammer-drill into concrete to lay rebar and the pour concrete, or we can get straight to paving. If it’s a road requiring concrete we’re required to wait at least 24 hours for it to set.

So after 2 days we’re finally able to pave. But the city allocates one (two if we’re lucky) 5 ton truck to transport material.

A relatively short paving job requires at a minimum of 60 tons. So that’s 12 trips to the asphalt factory and back. Each ton is around $80.

TL;DR

There’s a lot of road, not many of us, and soup is expensive.

People think the moral of Disney's Beauty and the Beast is supposed to be something like "don't judge people by appearances" but that's really not it. That is a possible moral of some other versions of the story but the Disney version has a different lesson actually and it's "people can change." And I think this becomes obvious when we look at the Beast and Gaston as foils to each other. Because they both start out arrogant, selfish, and petty. Perhaps most importantly, at the outset neither of them really cares about Belle's feelings. Gaston wants to marry her because she's beautiful, and the Beast hopes she might break the spell, but neither is really considering her needs or desires at all, at the start. But the Beast changes. He tries to make Belle happy. He learns to put her first, to love her unselfishly, which culminates in him letting her go. Meanwhile Gaston responds to Belle's rejection by plotting to coerce her into doing what he wants anyway. He never spares a thought for what she wants. He never changes.

But where it gets really interesting is when you compare their supporting characters. Because all Gaston has around him are sycophants who will tell him how wonderful he is. So he never sees any need to change. Whereas the Beast's servants - even though they are his servants - don't hesitate to tell him when he needs to clean up his act. They are constantly reminding him to mind his manners, control his temper, and consider things from Belle's point of view.

So people can change - but they need help to do it.

Holy shit op this is LITERALLY in the book 'Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depends On It'. Written by a guy who did hostage negotiation and then tried doing business negotiation, and mopped the floor with industry experts.

I'm fortunate enough to have a primary care doctor who knows about hEDS, but it's occurring to me that the skills in this book could be medically life changing for chronically ill folks of all kinds. Like. Literally a matter of life and death, especially for BIPOC and/or fat and/or young people who are having their issues dismissed.

This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
