The story of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War is nothing short of astounding yet heartbreaking. The regiment, famous for their puttees that were dyed blue due to a khaki fabric shortage on the island, fought valiantly at Suvla and Beaumont-Hamel, where 80 percent of the regiment was either killed or wounded. It’s said that out of over 700 men, at roll call the following morning, only 68 were present. Their legacy is immortalized in story and song, like this one by Great Big Sea.
