once you realize you don’t actually need to sleep, you can really (stops talking abruptly and stares straight ahead for 4 minutes)
Actually fuck let’s be real Ten by Pearl Jam has to be one of the greatest albums ever fucking made and I’m not just saying that bc of my grunge bias I’m saying that because they made banger after banger and could probably be the Seattle Grunge equivalent of the Tarzan soundtrack I’m not fucking kidding. You can’t tell me you don’t know Even Flow, or that you’ve never heard of Jeremy (bonus why he spoke in class) and Jesus christ “all five horizons revolved around her soul as earth to the sun” “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be mine?” FUCK OFF I’m telling you it’s a masterpiece. And when you’re done with that you can listen to Vs.
Watching Pearl Jam perform Why Go in 1992 made me pergenant

you can still radiate light if you’re sad. you can still be kind and soft-hearted if you’re a bit cynical. you don’t need to be the happiest person to make someone else’s day better.

Every so often, about a few times a year, I discover a musical artist I fall intensely in love with and I play their albums over and over for a long time. In a lot of cases it’s an artist I’ve been aware of, but never delved into their discography beyond some cursory well-known tracks in passing that were pretty good but I didn’t get the bug yet. Back in maybe 2013 I heard a song on the radio that felt like the same melancholy I was holding onto at 16. It had a mandolin and went “Blue moon/Oh don’t leave me on my own/Blue moon/It left me standing all alone” and it grabbed me pretty immediately. So I went and added it to all my playlists on YouTube and put it on my iPod. I knew Beck as the guy who did Loser but this was the sound that caught me at the time, I’d had it on playlists consistently over the years and saved it for the dusk hours.
13 years in the future I’m standing on the edge of my 20s as a different person, I still listen to 90s alternative and Seattle grunge like I did back then and I want more music for the summer. So I decided one evening I’m going to revisit Beck and throw on some music videos and it’s like discovering a sweater in the back of your closet that’s actually fresh as hell. I’ve been sitting spinning Sea Change for the past few nights, which is an album that I had no idea how badly I needed to hear, but it found me at exactly the right time. It’s an album written in heartbreak. Have you ever put on some music and felt seen?
I think all of this is just my roundabout way of saying it’s funny how you’ll find art and music at one stage in your life, move along, and then maybe it comes back when you need it most. When you have a deeper appreciation for the artist who created it and can enjoy it and engage with it like it deserves. I wonder why I didn’t explore Beck’s music more in the past but I wasn’t who I am today back then. I could say much the same about Brian Eno or Judee Sill or David Bowie, but what a long and strange full circle moment of this specific musician making what I was looking for at specific times in my life.
