it's always a good day to complain about English speakers
Important addition: Maria SkĹodowska-Curie was born during partitions, which means Poland didnât exist, which means her insistence that she was Polish was a significant act of defiance against the occupation, which means that you should respect that instead of arguing that âwell she had French citizenshipâ. She couldnât have Polish citizenship despite being Polish, thatâs kinda the point she was making by keeping her maiden name and naming a chemical element she discovered âPoloniumâ .
HOW TO PRONOUNCE: SkĹodowska
L with a dash through it (Ĺ) makes a âWâ sound. and W makes a âVâ sound.
skwo-DOV-ska
thank you for the pronunciation guide!
no piece of teen media has ever accurately depicted the quiet psychological warfare of bullying. bullies on TV are always dumb brutes and not the evil geniuses of emotional manipulation that they are in real life. being given a wedgie and having your lunch money stolen is nothing in comparison to a classmate quietly creating a taboo against speaking to you that they intend to enforce against all the other kids. itâs nothing like continuous cutting comments from people you thought were being nice to you. that way that the work of one kid can make you feel like every person on earth silently hates you and that you are dirty, disgusting, worthless, creepy and useless. that you can have friends but many of them will not speak to you at school for fear of the social consequences on their end. how that damage lasts in any social setting for the rest of your life
you canât even âtell a trusted adultâ because you cannot begin to articulate the thousands of small transgressions youâve experienced building to the horror of knowing your peers would like you dead. they donât have to say it or hurt you physically. they have other ways of letting you know theyâd prefer if you were worm food
Reblog to save a duck
Quack quack
Itâs getting to be that time of year where more people are going outside to parks and stuff so i thought it would a good idea to reblog this again
Once I was feeding some ducks from a bag of birdseed I brought with me, and this woman next to me looked so confused and asked what I was feeding them
When I said it was birdseed she just went âoh- can they actually eat that? Is that safe?â
I didnt know how to respond like, at all, so I just pointed at the duck and said âbirdâ
She then had a look on her face like a new groove was just forcibly carved in her brain and said softly âoh my fucking godâ
its not funny but i do think about it a lot
This made me think about this panel from Calvin and Hobbes:
But unlike the adult in this strip, Calvinâs dad actually APOLOGIZED for yelling at him when he saw how guilty his kid was:

As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:
Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.
Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he says ââŚ.AhâŚ.. that must be a Russian one thenâŚ.â
Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.
Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the word âprĂŠservatifes.â Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.
Defined a slang term for meâŚâŚ. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.
Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He said âI donât knowâ and turned to me and asked âIs there an English equivalent for ĐŃПиСПаŃиŃĐľŃкиК?â and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.
Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turned âHow stressful!â into âWhat stressing!â
Bilingual characters are great but if youâre going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And itâs usually 10x funnier than âOoops itâs hard to switch back.â
I use Spanish and English daily, none is my native language. When Iâm tired or did not have enough sleep I loose track of who to address in which language; Â I caught myself explaining something in Spanish to my English-speaking friends more than once. When Iâm REALLY tired Iâll throw some Polish words in the mix.Â
There is nothing more painful than bad fake Spanglish by an American writer. Bilingual people donât just randomly drop words in nonsensical places in their sentences ffs. âIâm muy tired! I think Iâll go to my cama and go to sleep!â Nobody does that.
From my bilingual parents:
- Only being able to do math in their original language. âOk so that would beeeeee ⌠*muttering* ocho por cuatro menos tresâŚâ
- Losing words and getting mad at you about it. âGimme the - the - UGH, ESA COSA AHIâ CARAJO. The thing, the oven mitt. Christ.â
- Making asides to you in Spanish even though youâve told them to not do this as lots of people here speak Spanish. âOye, mira esa, que cara fea.â âMOM FFS WEâRE IN A MEXICAN NEIGHBORHOOD.â
- Swears in English donât count.
- Swears in Spanish mean youâd better fucking run, kid.
- Introducing you to English-only Americans using your Spanish name so that they mispronounce your name for all eternity because thatâs what your mom said your name was. âHi Dee-yanna!â âsigh, Just call me Diana.â âYeah but your mom said your name was Dee-yanna.âÂ
- Your parents give you a name that only makes sense in Spanish. âYour name is Floor?â âNo, my name is Flor.â âFLOOR?â âSigh.â
 - conjugating English words with Russian grammar and vice versa. Sometimes both at once, which is extra fun. ŃĐ°ĐźĐžĐťĐľŃ -> ŃаПОНоŃĐ°Ń -> ŃаПОНоŃаŃŃ
- when vice versa, dropping English articles entirely. The, a, an: all gone. e.g. âI go to store and buy thing, I fix car and go to place.â This also happens when i am very tiredÂ
- speaking English with heavy accent you donât actually have - when my family and I are switching over fast, we say the English words in a very heavy Russian accent that mostly doesnât show up otherwiseÂ
bonus:Â
- keysmashing in the wrong language when your keyboard is still switched over
- using ))))) instead of :))) or other culture-specific emoji/typing quirks
all of the above
I donât actually speak Tagalog, but my momâs Filipino. One of my favorite things is when she forgets how to preposition, so something is âin the tableâ.Â
SOMEHOW I NEVER REBLOGGED THIS?!?!?!?!? this is one of my absolute favorite posts on all of tumblr also, to add to the pile of fun things bilinguals do: cackling over bilingual puns that nobody else in the room will get and then being completely unable to explain why this is funny
Iâm not bilingual, but I was almost fluent in Japanese when I lived there. One thing I still have trouble with is pronouncing an English word in a Japanese sentence without saying the English word in a Japanese accent. Even my name becomes katakana-fied if I stick it into a Japanese sentence.

Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audienceâs benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. Iâm talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengersâ stinger, Iâm talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, Iâm talking about every hackneyed âThis character is actually this other characterâ when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.
But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius⌠Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius weâre clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.
Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesnât mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. Sheâs in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.
And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Oliviaâs name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know sheâs working with the Kingpin. Why wouldnât she be a supervillain? Because sheâs hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.
Itâs a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.
Iâm not reading all that I want her to dissect me

Anyways everyone should watch The Good Place
Child suffers from OCD, particularly moral scrupulosity OCD and existential OCD and his intellectualization and rigidity are both manifestations of covert mental compulsions.
âThereâs a cure?!â asked the girl that kills everything she touches. âHey shut up weâre perfâ replied the girl that makes clouds.Â
For real though. Storm has stopped an entire tsunami before. âMakes clouds my assâ she can conjure lightning and tornadoes and is revered as a god in her tribe. She literally changes atmospheric pressure and thatâs how she flies. So fuck you. Storm is flawless.
I think you missed the part where the GIRL WHO KILLS EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES wants to NOT KILL EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES and everyone dismisses her incredible misfortune just because the lady who is the AVATAR OF THE STORM won the fucking SUPERPOWER LOTTERY
And here we see X-Men perfectly illustrating the disparity between the larger disability community (Storm) and the chronic illness community (Rogue). One wants society to accept & respect them & their various different needs, which is surely a noble cause, while the other would like to NOT BE IN PAIN EVERY FUCKING DAY, which is just as important but often gets shouted down by non-ill disabled people who only want to talk about disability as a social construct.
I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.
Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."
no you do not need to hold fictional characters "accountable". they are not real.
