Look, the way Cooper looks, the things he's done in order to survive long enough to find them. That she can forgive, if only because it is quite literally her fault. But this?

I'm sorry, I cannot possibly foresee a world in which Barbara is okay with the fact that her (ex?) husband sewed ANOTHER WOMAN'S FINGER onto his hand, let alone be okay with him touching her with it. Especially when; as we see, Cooper went in to the SD mart. He binged on drugs and booze sure but we see the fact that by the time he sits down in front of the TV and considers his lost trigger finger he's either not fully blitzed yet or he metabolized the stuff he'd taken already. And either way; he still had the options. The drawer full of fingers was still there, there were plenty of feral ghouls that were lying about he could have swiped one for. Hell, if he wanted a fresh one the dealers themselves were barely cold by the time he probably got in there, certainly fresher than Lucy's which he kept in his pocket for at least a day depending on how long he was high for.

But dream, you say, he can still replace it later! Except that defeats the point of using Lucy's finger in the first place doesn't it? From a narrative standpoint; the ghoul willingly attaching Lucy's finger to his hand means that he is choosing to accept some humanity back into the husk he's let himself become. Whereas Lucy's operational one signifies that the Wasteland has left its indelible mark on her. The exchange is supposed to represent how each has changed the other irrevocably. To remove that is to remove exactly the piece that would render cooper familiar to his family when so much else about him has changed.
