I watched a video about madness arcs in media, and I tried to relate it to Thorin. But honestly? Madness doesn't fit in the slightest. He was sick. That's all I can gather from it. He was sick and wild. Yes, he tried to fight it, tried to fight what he couldnt control. But to me its more like when you have a cold and youre trying not to fall asleep. Your body completely takes over, entirely base instinct; and while your mind is screaming at you to get up, just move, you can barely lift your arm, until the exhaustion eventually wins and everything goes dark, and you dont know any more. THATS WHAT I IMAGINE IT TO BE LIKE! In his dragon sickness there were moments of consciousness where he was desperately fighting against that base instinct, that fog, but there would be a trigger and everything would go dark again as the sickness took over.
Another thing I'd like to highlight: the pressure Bilbo must have felt, knowing that he was the only one Thorin trusted. Throughout the third movie, Bilbo is the only one who sees Thorin in his moments of clarity- actually, he's also the only one who can bring it out of him in the first place. That is such an insane amount of responsibility. I want to further highlight the fact that Bilbo didn't think he could save Thorin from his gold sickness, he thought he could save him from his own actions. From personal experience, I need you fucks to understand just how accurate that perspective is. It's not some "I can fix him" bullshit. He completely lost hope for that. But he knew that Thorin's actions would be his doom, so he obliterated his plan- or at least, he tried. Something that comes with building your maturity is realizing that you cannot change a persons mindset. That's something they have to do on their own. But what you can do, is ruin their plans for self destruction. 9 times out of 10, it leads to a different form of destruction instead. Cue further maturity after that.
I know a lot of people will bash on the movies, and how they're nothing like the books. But I want to remind you that honestly, they did good with what they had. The character arcs were realistic, and it was really cool to see these characters come to life.
Bilbo is being persuaded by Gandalf.

"Hobbits have a curious habit when it comes to marriage. They keep it a closely guarded secret for years (officially, always, but in reality, very often) who they are going to marry, even if they know it. Then they suddenly leave and get married, and disappear without leaving their address for a week or two (or even longer). When Bilbo disappeared, this was the first thing his neighbors thought. "He left and got married. So, who could she be? – no one else has gone missing, as far as we know.” Even a year later, they would have been less surprised if he had returned with his wife. For a long time, some people believed that he was hiding his wife, and for a while, there was even a legend about poor Mrs. Bilbo, who was too ugly to be shown.

I just saw this, and it made me so funny. If we take into account the theory of the fans that the gift of Thorin, the mithril chain mail, was the greatest gift that the king could only do for his special person, then the theory of Bilbo's marriage in his absence is quite true. It's just that Bilbo himself might not have known about it. 😂
okay so in the book when bilbo was able to break out the dwarves from the elvenking's dungeon, thorin said something about how they will be for ever at bilbo's service. and i think about how erebor did not disclose bilbo's identity and whereabouts to the servant of sauron, how some dwarves helped him in his 111th birthday, and how when some dwarves passed by the shire they looked on the place with wonder and gratitude for there was the hobbit who helped the dwarves restore erebor
i've been thinking about this post again and how people attribute these actions to the loyalty and steadfastness of tolkien dwarves, which is yes true, but it's also about contracts. promises being said. that's why they react badly to betrayal. and also why it's very important that thorin took back his words at the gates, because he acknowledged that what bilbo did was not an act of betrayal, but only something a true friend would do. and the fact that the entirety of dwarrows follow through with it means they also see bilbo's actions under the same light

has anyone else ever had a fanfic that just... haunts them? like it's been months and maybe even years since you read it, but it just lingers with you and you can never truly leave behind the imprint it made on you? and maybe it's just a single line, one sentence that you can't shake off, that takes up residence in your mind and stays there, feeding into your psyche and subtly influencing your brainspace and maybe even your writing or other works?

I hate how 3 pm is so close to 2 pm so there's an illusion that there's still time left in the day to do things but in reality 3 pm is also close to 4 pm and if it's close to 4 pm you might as well just wait till tomorrow. <- can't argue against this by the way.
