A fatal car crash, an unsolved murder and attacks on Jewish establishments have put a Queens community on edge
The unsolved murder of a Jewish man in a public park, a synagogue desecrated with motor oil and feces, a bagel shop splattered with dirt, and the sudden and tragic death of a Jewish journalist in a car crash.
Those incidents within a few miles of each other in a heavily Jewish neighborhood of Queens have put the Jewish community in that borough on alert since May. Ronnie Perry, who works at Benny’s Brick Oven Kosher Pizza in the neighborhood, said he can’t help but see a pattern.
“You know what the common denominator is, right?” Perry said.
Though investigators have not determined the motives in each case, prosecutors on Monday charged the same man who allegedly caused the death of the journalist in the car crash with a hate crime for allegedly vandalizing the bagel shop.
“I was beyond horrified,” said Rachel Sales, daughter of the killed journalist, Cara Trager. “The fact that this guy did a hate crime … days before means that he could have been apprehended before my mom was killed.”
Last week, prosecutors charged Dawood Faisal, 22, with a hate crime for destroying property at Bagels & Co, a bagel shop on the corner of a major thoroughfare in Fresh Meadows that advertises itself as kosher in neon lights and displays Israeli flags. On two separate occasions in May, Faisal allegedly knocked over multiple plant stands outside the shop and, in one instance, hurled dirt at the outside wall of the store.
In May, Faisal was arraigned on charges of manslaughter for the death of Trager, a Queens-based journalist who was also active in her Jewish community. Faisal allegedly sped over 75 mph through two red lights and collided with two cars, propelling one into a crosswalk where it struck Trager and her husband, Michael, who survived.
Prosecutors have not presented any evidence that Trager was specifically targeted by Faisal, and authorities are not investigating the crash as a hate crime, according to a spokesperson for District Attorney Melinda Katz.
But even before the vandalism charge, Michael Trager told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he believed that Faisal had been “looking to do damage in a heavily Jewish area.”
Perry, whose pizzeria is just a block from the vandalized bagel shop, told the Forward that the string of troubling incidents have rattled the community, and there’s not a lot visibly Jewish businesses like his can do to bolster security.
Nily Rozic, the Jewish state Assembly member who represents the Queens district where many of those attacks took place, said the incidents are more than just property damage or isolated violence.
“It really makes people feel like they’re being targeted as a community,” she said.
Sales told the Forward her mom was passionate about fighting antisemitism, and the two often discussed the uptick in anti-Jewish hate crimes — including the bagel shop’s vandalism days before Cara Trager’s death on May 29.
“This is a tragedy for the entire Jewish community to understand, and beyond the Jewish community, this is a tragedy for New Yorkers, for Americans, to see that hate crimes don’t end at vandalism. People could die,” Sales said. “My mom died.”
Just a week before the car crash, Albert Itzkowitz, a local rabbi and former kosher bakery owner, was shot and killed while visiting Kissena Park in Queens. Police are investigating the incident as a murder but have not identified any suspects.
His family is calling for the killing to be investigated as a hate crime.
“Daddy was visibly Jewish. He was targeted in broad daylight. He was killed in a public park where he should have been safe,” his daughter, Leah Livshitz, said at a press conference in June. “His family deserves answers. The Jewish community deserves answers.”
Then in July, two Orthodox congregations in Queens were desecrated with feces and motor oil. Police are also investigating that vandalism as a hate crime.
Rozic, the first and only Israeli-born New York state Assembly member, said even as investigations are ongoing, she understands the incidents as “interconnected” and has heard from Jewish constituents who feel afraid.
“Context is important,” Rozic said. “When incidents like this are followed by additional violence, it compounds the fear and the trauma of the community.”
Anti-Jewish hate crimes have increased by 8.5% in New York City this year — with 205 reported versus 189 for the same period last year, according to data from the NYPD.
A couple of years ago we were all terribly concerned about the fact that a lot of American high schools are assigning such crushing homework loads that some kids literally don't have enough time to eat or sleep (and all this in spite of the fact that there's no good evidence that assigning homework actually improves academic outcomes at the pre-university level), but now we're hearing stories about those same schools struggling to stop kids from using ChatGPT to write their essays and suddenly It's The Children Who Are Wrong. Like, do you think maybe there's a certain level of cause and effect in play here?

you probably won't be surprised at the pushback I've gotten from teachers at the college level (who by and large don't have to worry about NCLB guidelines and tests) at suggesting that if critical thinking is the problem being lost, maybe we should change our testing and assessment styles to directly measure critical thinking on the fly rather than throwing up our hands and blaming TECHNOLOGY
the trick is that these assessment styles often require more work to think about and construct assessments for and that is work that college instructors are typically compensated very poorly if at all for, so like, I get it. but that's how you fix this shit. and I think if you are invested in the project of education for its own sake, you have to consider the ways in which incentivizing your students not to rely on chatgpt involves changing the structure of your shared activities together such that failing to learn and digest material is routinely boring or unpleasant and that knowing it is the only way to feel that one is succeeding in class in small, low-stakes, frequent interactions rather than single high-stakes ones.
i think one of the main issues professors and adjuncts are running into is that they not only don't have the bandwidth to redesign curriculums to account for the existence of ChatGPT, they don't have the bandwidth to do all that on top of also serving as remedial educators for students who graduated high school without most of the critical thinking skills the profs could previously expect from incoming first-year university students. you can redesign a literature course to prioritize certain kinds of engagement with the material over others, but from the various anecdotes and articles I've read, a huge part of the reason university instructors are hitting walls is that test prep-driven curriculum design in elementary and secondary school prioritized analysis of short excerpts rather than reading for depth across a whole volume. if your students literally don't know how to Read An Adult Chapter Book it is not your fault as a university professor that you don't know how to quickly jump back in time to 2020 and teach your class such a foundational skill in what was supposed to be a university-level course.
i don't blame the kids for making the rational decision to cheat when presented with obvious incentive, little (immediately obvious) downside, and inadequate resources for alternatives. i just don't know how higher ed instructors can realistically cope when they realize they're suddenly needing to essentially teach a different grade level than the one they were hired for, while still being expected to reach the original finish line.
to truly unfuck the education system you'd have to be willing to prevent kids from moving on before they mastered a grade-standard skill, and if you did that, you'd furthermore have to support them to success instead of just punishing failure. you'd have to make it so taking longer to understand something did not have obvious i immediate real-world consequences as immediate as the real-world consequence of moving on without understanding. and that's a lot to ask.

just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular
