sci-fi author, sailpunk, sapphic ๐ this was supposed to be an author blog but it is currently mainly a star trek blog ๐ assorted works and science stuff at sheilajenne.com
I should probably write a pinned post, shouldn't I?
This blog is about 80% Star Trek. Currently I like TOS best. I write reams of Kirk/Spock fic here. I also love making up stuff about Vulcan culture, speculating on their biology, learning their language, etc.
I also write books. My Imperial Mars series is like if you put Master and Commander in space, and then it somehow morphed into Les Mis. Frock coats, solar sails, revolution, lesbians. You can get into the series here.
I also have a spinoff novella about the charming prince and his murderous valet here. You don't have to have read the rest of the series, but I think they enrich each other.
Then I have two standalones. In Bisection, two people in one body explore the stars and their relationship to each other. You can get it here. Invasive is about human colonists coming to a new world and trying to recreate the home they lost. It's available here.
I like it when you interact with me, so please don't be shy (unless you are a spambot). Make art of my stories, steal my fic ideas and do them again better, it's all good. But please don't pirate my books; if you want them and don't want to pay, just ask me. It's about โจ consent.โจ
I am looking for work as a copyeditor or really any writing related job. No job too small, no MS too messy!
Other things I like, in no particular order: The Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Good Omens, Xena, Imperial Radch, Vorkosigan Saga, She-Ra, Becky Chambers, The Locked Tomb, CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series, basically if it's queer and/or in space I will eat it up with a spoon.

why does star trek strange new worlds make the assumption that vulcans are all rude and self-superior. there are some vulcans with self-superiority but generally even they arent that outwardly rude just subtly catty. but most vulcans in trek are generally just normal???? I feel like vulcans acting the way they do in strange new worlds is like kirk drift but for vulcan behaviour. stop the flanderisation of vulcans im begging yall
And the way humans act toward them is....in-universe, it's awful behavior, even given they make Vulcans seem like jerks. The new cadet is having trouble adjusting to Starfleet because it's chaotic, and instead of adjusting things for her, they shrug and go "well she must just be very Vulcan."
Maybe she wants to hang someplace other than the noisy Port Galley, have you considered that?!
I think the reason for it is a combination of going too far with the direction Enterprise started for Vulcans, honestly ever since then Vulcans as a group have just been ENT Vulcans. This isnโt necessarily bad depending on how itโs done, Discovery was able to depict Vulcan societal problems without beingโฆ Like This.
But SNW likeโฆ thinks Vulcans are inherently funny and largely doesnt think about the implications of any of this beyond a punch line. The โvery Vulcanโ racial microaggression is meant to be a punchline. It sucks. Itโs bad. The human characters being this shitty and the Vulcans being so over the top mean and short with everyone are both bad. It makes Spock feel like their allegorical One Black Friend. Itโs weird.
"It's okay to say Vulcans are jerks because Spock said it once!" Yeah the SNW crew really think they're defending their friend against the big mean Vulcans, when really they're loudly rejecting half of what he is, all the time ๐ญ
If I were writing this season, you could trust that it was working up to a plotline where Uhura realizes that smiling and saying she knows how people feels aren't communications strategies that work with everyone. She learns to connect with the Vulcan cadet on her terms, and becomes a better comms officer.
I just don't trust the SNW writers to do this. It feels like they're playing the sitcom thing of the one nerdy guy existing purely for lols, only it's a whole species.
That would be a really cute arc for Uhura and I think season 1 or even season 2 SNW couldve done this well, but season 3 and some aspects of season 4 like the treatment of AโSha feels like reverse WandaVision where the show becomes more and more subsumed by sitcom tropes as it goes on and frankly i prefer when the show feels like these peopleโs actual lives and not a show within a show; thats genuinely how artificial the overly sitcom-ey elements feel for me
Exactly. It just doesn't feel sincere most of the time. I feel like they are winking at me with all these references to other things or past canon. Please just show me a story with actual people behaving in the ways real people do!

Spock has to get her captain out of a nasty Tarsus nightmare using a meld!
CLOSE UPS BELOW THE CUT!
Iโm always a fan of trippy mind meld visuals, so giving spock some ghostly mind hands is super fun! I also hid her face in the last panel because it felt more ethereal to have her be this faceless force of calm.. Kirk is always so full of guilt and wanting to be the perfect responsible captain. I eat it up with a spoon when he cracks under the pressure.
They are so anime here Iโm delighted. Iโm happy with how fast Iโve gotten at comic pages. This one took me like three hours.

Spock is a character who lives in my mind to such a degree that I have headcanons I will fully forget if I've posted about before or are canon or widely accepted fanon or not because to me it's just a given. It is known. <- made it up
Anyway one โ๏ธ of which is that Spock's a little extra telepathic (melding with anything, melding through walls, mind controlling someone from across the room in that one episode everyone ignores because it was bad) Specifically because of his human ancestry making him lack some sort of inhibitor gene Vulcans usually have. Like ligers for psychics
I came to this conclusion like years ago because of the number of "what the fuck? Spock can do that?" Moments that happen in tos when the plot demands it & because it frequently goes against more established Rules for how Vulcans work it has to just be a Spock thing. From there the answer to "why is Spock built different" is kind of obvious. "Why does being half human make you more telepathic" is where the real specbio fun starts
Also! Implies the mechanism for Vulcan telepathy is different from Betazoid telepathy, as Deanna has weaker telepathy than average, also because of having a human parent. OR it depends on which parent is human. But I think the former makes more sense than having the genes divided up by chromosomes in the same way when they may or may not even Have the same chromosomes
That being said โ๏ธ if it's ligers for psychics (lion/tiger hybrids continually growing larger because they miss the Stop Growing gene) the Vulcan telepathy off switch would have to be carried on whatever Vulcan female typical chromosome Spock didn't receive from his mother. So. Keeping our terminology simplified so we're not here all day getting distracted by potential differences in sexual development, let alone Gender, this wouldn't happen with a Vulcan mother & human father. So even future mixed aliens may or may not be Like That, making it still Just Spock, depending
If a (m)vulcan/(f)human makes a Spock, a (f)vulcan/(m)human could be either telepathically normal or possibly stunted by Vulcan standards. And I just think that's neat
Personally I think humans have telepathy genes of our own, which are just deactivated in most of us. There are human espers like Gary Mitchell.
Say we've got one broken gene keeping us from being active telepaths. In some humans, a mutation can make us espers. In hybrids, with the repaired gene coming from the other parent, human telepathy can be expressed.
Human telepathy is not well understood because of this; other species are aware it can result in strange and unexpected talents. So Spock has the ability to influence minds over a distance, and Troi has no telepathy but extreme empathy, I think actually more than a full Betazoid and from a longer range. Nobody can predict how those weird human genes are going to pan out.

I actually do think itโs better for abusers and abusive characters to realize the harm their past actions caused and seek to do better than be literally or metaphorically executed for their crimes

I think itโs better for abusers and abusive characters to realize the harm their past actions caused and seek to do better than be literally or metaphorically executed for their crimes.
Something about how society cares more about punishing the wicked than about making the world a better place, and how many people really struggle to shake that.
In real life, we so rarely get to see this. Even if it does happen, it's usually long after they've left our lives or the public eye.
But man is it satisfying to see in fiction. Horrible person says he's sorry. Evil overlord realizes how awful her crimes were. MC's bad dad finally says the stuff she always wanted him to say. It's too late but it still means something that he tried.
I have never found punishing bad guys to be satisfying. Nothing gets better! I want to see things get better, for the evil inside people to be destroyed, not the people themselves.
Sorry, my what? My pronouns? Oh, yeah I'm between genders at the moment. No, it's cool, I quit my last gender a little while ago because it really wasn't working out. I don't know if I even have a dream gender anymore.
Oh yeah, it did come with benefits, but they weren't really worth it. The culture was really toxic. To be honest I think I'd prefer a part-time gender so I can just be self-described in my spare time.
I mean, in a perfect world we wouldn't need gender, you know? We could just voluntarily be perceived as much as we're able, as much as makes us feel fulfilled. Having a full-time gender shouldn't be a prerequisite for food, shelter, and healthcare.

you eat the rich they fear for a day. You take their money and you force them to face their own humiliation for violating the social contract over and over and over.
It happens the same every year. When I finally buckle down to filling out my Philon nominations, I have way too much in every category to nominate them all!
So: I tend to make a longlist first, the stuff that definitely deserves it, which I have to sift among. And then I try to inflict it on other people, in the hopes that whatever I don't nominate, somebody else will. After all, the biggest hurdle in front of every fic is simply getting found and read.
So, here we go. I have not read everything put out this year, not by a long shot, and I am positive I've forgotten some of the things I have read. But here are a few in each category which are definitely worth checking out.
Ficlet (1000 words or less)
(the time was neither wrong nor right) by Laura JV
Technically... by Cloves_And_Cinnamon
If I Should Lose You by gangstabilbo
slipping through my fingers by ly_ace3
Short fic (1000-5000 words)
lick it up, baby, lick it up by Illegalpaladin
Midnight Oil by gunstreet
something blue by tothewillofthepeople
Yes, Dear by aprettysmalldose
At his feet by Moreta1848 (me lol)
Medium fic (5000-10,000 words)
I thrill when you touch my hand by tothewillofthepeople
it all comes out in the wash by remylebae
A Story About Us by professorplum221
The Teeth of Winter by Kyra
The holiday card (me again)
Long fic (10-20,000 words)
The Daughters of Akra'ana by CampySpaceSlime
Terran Strawberry by ghostofgoldendays
The In-Laws by Herself_nyc
The Epistemic Theory of Miracles by selfmadepurgatories
One Warm Line by The_Buzz
Good (at pretending to be a) Boy by CampySpaceSlime

Novella (20-50,000 words)
The Trouble with T'Rub'l by AndroidAndAle
I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl by tothewillofthepeople
Optic Nerves by CampySpaceSlime
The Great Pretender by Illegalpaladin
Broken Arrow by gunstreet
Novel (50,000 words and up)
Pinched Nerve by RookSacrifice
Quest by CateAdams
If On a Rainy Night by tprung
The View from T'Khut by Laura JV
Viscera by CampySpaceSlime
Symptoms of Withdrawal by HDDrabble
The abyss between one and two (for once the only novel I wrote this year)
I will have to make a second installment when I'm done going through podfic, poetry, and art. You can find some pretty comprehensive listings of almost everything eligible here.
Anyone can nominate for the Philons, and you can nominate up to three per category. The deadline is August 15th, though, so if you want to do it, you shouldn't put it off.
Podfics and poems! Putting off art for now because I seriously do not have ANY idea how to search for art from this year rather than previous years; I've been reblogging it quite heedlessly without tags all year.
Podfic
I used to never listen to podfic, but I have started getting really into it. Having somebody read a good fic to you lets you enjoy it in a whole new way.
Silent Star by cookiemom6067 (from my fic)
This was a huge challenge for her, because Spock has a severe stutter and communication takes place with speech, sign, text, and telepathy. But she took care to accurately depict stuttering and distinguish all the kinds of communication, and I think she did an amazing job.
Discounts at Starbase One by cookiemom6067 (from AndroidAndAle)
The fic is a longtime time favorite and cookiemom never fails.
Unconditional by Catchatorie (from lettered)
One of my favorite fics ever, and the narrator somehow manages to make it even hotter.
Captain Pike's long-game beneficial Starfleet business scheme by Starlafoxfire (from thembonesthembones)
I'm not finished listening to it but it's definitely worth a listen.
How hard can it be? by me, from my own fic
I'm a beginner at this but hey, I think it turned out okay.
Poems
Halfway by SpockLovemail
The Scientist Observes His Captain's Botanical Interests by Kyra
