I've listened to chapter one so far. And I am rather curious about the worldbuilding. I love the guns that shoot not just bullets. And putting a mind into a different body temporarily is super cool (what happened to the body's previous owner?) And I usually enjoy a 'criminals forced to do a police job cause the police are too scared/incompetent' storyline.
However, and this is a pretty big however, I'm just not attaching to the main guy. He's all hardboiled stoic criminal guy, and just not the vibe I care for. Maybe if his lil flashes of snark and sarcasm grow I will like him better as we go on.
I do really struggle to finish stories if I can't like or care about the main character.
Oh no... Some new lady is breasting boobily... And main guy has gotta comment to the reader about how he's getting a boner about it. My liking of him is dropping steadily, and there wasn't a lot to begin with.
He's also being hired as a private investigator, which in vibes is turning this story into more and more of the noir, hardboiled detective flirts with femme fatale and there's a mystery. Which is much less my cup of tea.
So I'm three chapters in now, and I know the basic setup for the mystery.
A rich guy has been shot. The police say it looks like a suicide. Either that or his wife may have tried to kill him.
However, because you can swap a consciousness between bodies in this world, this rich guy has his mind permanently backed up, and refreshed every other day. So all he's really lost is about two days, since he was killed shortly before the refresh. He knows this would be what would happen, and so does his wife, so why would either of them try to kill him knowing they would fail?
Someone must've tried to murder him. But who? And why? And how'd they manage to get so close as to set this up to look like a suicide?
So that's quite interesting and intriguing. I just don't know if I can hang out in the main character's head long enough to find out the answers to those questions. I think I wanna put the book down.
Ah well. It makes sense I wouldn't like Every book suggested to me, but I'm still a bit sad.

I'm sure I've left some people out because I slapped this together in 15 minutes but it's a whole lot more, imo artists and writers are nothing without these other guys (gn)

An Excellent fairy story. Feels classic in the best way. I adore the feel of the whole thing, it feels like home. Tiffany is a lovely girl, and very clever. I'm glad there are more books telling her story.
I also really enjoy the jokes xD Not As Big As Medium Size Jock But Bigger Than Wee Jock Jock is the most fantastic name XD

After reading Project Hail Mary, I got the Brain Worms and I've just realized something:
We know that Grace is always going on about how talented and skilled Rocky is, but there's a line in the book I feel I should bring up.
"You have idea already. Not question. I know you. You have idea already. Tell idea."
-page 396
Rocky thinks exactly the same about Grace and his science skills. He has just as much unwavering trust in his capacity to think their way out of a problem as Grace has in Rocky's engineering skills.
It had a beautiful blend of twists I didn't see coming and tropes where I knew more or less what would come next and could excitedly anticipate. I loved each of the main characters, and their arcs were so fun to see! I really enjoyed how it felt very Jewish and Russian, and all the cultural differences beyond my familiarity. I love the ways they did the magic, it felt both grounded and also mystical cannot understand. I enjoyed the several arcs the book went through, and the way it waxed and waned tension. I love how we have some characters that are implied to be gay and ace.
If I had one complaint, it would be Wanda and siblings. For me, they hit a poor medium of too much pov time and importance to be minor characters, but not enough pov time and importance to be main characters. I was particularly sad that when chekov's nut did its thing that it was passed off to Miryem and Irina, and none of the siblings did it.
That said, my complaint is minor. This book had me hooked and invested from start to finish! And the ending was Super cute!!! Very satisfying and wrapped up all the ends very cleanly.
I already spoiled the first 1/4-1/3 of the book in my last chain, and it got Long, so I'll use readmores in this one.
So! We've settled into our three main characters now.
Miryem has been struggling as new wife to the Starric lord. She would not like to have sex with him, and he's just as displeased, though forging ahead anyway, when she proposes a trade. He will answer three of her questions every night, and she will give up that specific right of marriage each night.
Because she's set such a high 'price' on her questions, this does result in no one else daring to answer Any Questions At All from her. So she's learning to be a bit more commanding, but still bumping into fairy rules around every corner.
Now Irina. She's also struggling as a new wife, but for her she knows that if she ever spends the night with her new husband that she will be killed and fed to the fire demon. However, she's doing pretty good with slipping in and out of mirrors to hide from him. It's just so Cold inside the mirrors.
But, as he gets more and more frustrated each night, the Czar gets her old nurse to use as leverage, or to tide over the hungry fire. Both work for him.
And over to Wanda. She and her brother were running away from the village, and end up running into the woods to get away from the dogs they have tracking them. They nearly freeze, but then find a tiny hut, mostly filled with mold, but also with a working oven. So they hunker down for a bit.
Only useful items keep appearing out of nowhere... Surely gifted by some witch or fairy who will curse them instead should they not repay. So instead of leaving after a night, they start fixing up the hut, making food that some vanishes, and finding more useful items.
But they're coming all together~
Cause Miryem has demanded to go out driving, hoping to find Some way to visit her village again. It doesn't work, but she does see two people once they're out far enough the carriage driver is acting scared to just Be there. And she recognizes one! It's Irina!
See, Irina has slipped through a mirror into the Starric realm each time, and this time she brought her nurse to keep her safe. Only the silver jewelry is only keeping Irina safe from the cold, not the nurse.
Miryem insists that they pick them up, and that the carriage driver take them to the nearest shelter. He's very reluctant, but doesn't refuse an order from the queen. They find a tiny hut, surprisingly warm and maintained, with a fresh pot of food on the stove. They bundle the nurse in and get her to eat so she warms up a bit. The carriage driver is flinching at everything now, so they're stamping all over fairy rules for sure.
So since Irina's husband is causing issues cause of a fire demon, and Miryem's husband is causing problems cause he's an ice fairy, they're gonna try to shove them at each other and hope they both die in the fight.
Now details of this plan? A lot more vague.
Miryem had promised her cousin (who's marrying the jeweler) earlier in the book to dance at her wedding, and she uses this promise to ask the Starric lord if he will take her. He says Only if she turns three storerooms of silver into gold first.
Irina meanwhile is trying to gentle and confuse and logic the Czar out of wringing her neck when she shows up out of nowhere Again, and I think she will persuade him that if they go to the same big town that the wedding will be at, there will be some kingdom benefit, it will avoid war. She's also trying to turn his anger towards the Starric, so he'll be primed for fighting one on sight when he sees one.
We got a look over to Miryem's parents and Wanda's youngest brother. The fairy magics are making them forget Miryem a Lot, but they manage to remember for a minute, and remember her excuse she gave when she knew she was about to be carried off, that she's visiting her grandfather. And also the boy is hoping to find his older siblings there too, cause they were gonna ask the grandfather for a job.
Now I'm pretty sure they forget Miryem again, and just remember that they planned to go, and the wedding is a good thing to go to. But I'm sure they'll remember again.
And it's a good thing they leave, cause the village people are struggling with winter lasting into the spring, and one of their friends being killed by his children who they can't find, and they are going full steam on antisemitism to vent that struggle.
The guy who's driving the carriage is instructed not to let them out of his sight, so he can stop any attempts at 'helping convicted criminals'.
Oh and also, Wanda's youngest brother has a probably-magical nut. His Mom's ghost has been hanging around a white tree she was buried under, and it made a nut when he and his siblings had to leave home. He's been keeping it, and wants to plant it in a place where they can all live together, so his mom can keep watching over them.
Irina has Well set up the fire demon to attack and consume the Starric king. And managed to organize herself the politics around succession in a way for her to remain Czarina and in good position after the Czar dies. And! Set up a sneaky run away path just in case.
Miryem managed to turn all three storerooms of silver into gold! She was clever and found a loophole, having her Starric servants move a whole load of the silver out of the storerooms. She's now on the way to the wedding with the Starric lord.
Her servants are now bondsmen/women to her, which is a special fairy thing. And she got to give a child Starric a true name 🥰🥰🥰 It was Precious 🥹
Meanwhile, Miryem's parents have stumbled upon Wanda and her brother, and managed to lose their tail, so they all go together to the big town, and they're gonna attend the wedding too.
We keep being reminded of the littlest brother's magic nut, so I'm eagerly waiting on that chekov's nut to go off :D
Welp, I knew it couldn't be wrapping up so smoothly with so much book left.
So wedding night comes, and the two magic people are brought together. There's a good long fight, with all our main characters pitching in, and it swings one way, and then another. In the end though, neither is dead. The Starric lord is captured by the fire demon within the Czar, who intends to eat him slowly, or else torture his name from him so he can take over his land.
So... if/when he escapes that'll be a Problem. And also now the fire demon is very powered up.
Also, there is Something connecting the Starric getting and keeping gold that has to do with how long they can keep it being winter. Very unclear what, exactly, but there Is a connection.
But there's still a quarter of the book left to find things out~
So now that the dust is settling a bit, a few things have happened.
One, for their part in the events of the wedding, Wanda and siblings have been given a full pardon from father-killing crimes, and also permission to own and pass on as much land in the woods as they can live on and work. They intend to ask Miryem's family to join them, and go back to the mysterious little hut, and expand it and build a lil farm around it.
Two, Spring is coming back! And it's coming in Fast. It was supposed to be mid spring, and it Is now mid spring, regardless of the loss of early spring.
Three, Miryem is starting to get real worried for the Starric. After all, even with the pain their nobility have inflicted on humans, there's still a whole land of people that are Not the nobility, and don't deserve to be killed and taken over by fire demon. And she knows some of them personally now. She knows they have goodness in them. She's attached. She's their queen. She's responsible.
So now she's going to break the Starric lord out of prison.
I sure hope he's real grateful or else she's got a planned deal to make to stop him from rampaging the second he's out. Cause he's clearly been warming up to her over time, but I don't know if I trust that enough for him not to get off a powerful parting shot to the mortals as he goes back home.
